Being stabbed or cut by an enchanted weapon (though it does have to be an extremely strong enchantment)

Poison

Beheading

Drowning

Entering a holy/blessed building

Snow/Ice magic

Healing potions/spells (its light magic Shadow Knights are entirely dark magic)

Since many other beings cant tell the difference between an immortal and mortal shadow knight, they turn out to be harder to kill than expected

okay but what about billy shying away from all forms of physical touch unless it’s from argyle?

picture it! he’s a latchkey kid in california, wandering down to the beach because the house feels too empty without his mom or too full with susan and max taking up space. he’s got friends, but he’s not close with any of them, they just surf together sometimes, chase waves until the sun goes down and the others all disperse, scatter back into town, cozy in their warm little houses with families that give a shit if they’re home in time for dinner. argyle’s the only one who lags behind, building big elaborate sandcastles. sometimes billy sits and watches him, passes him a shovel or a bucket or packs some sand together because hanging out with the weirdo space-cadet kid is better than being at home. he gets comfortable with argyle, working side by side with him, so close that their elbows knock together or their shoulders touch.

once argyle takes billy back home with him, so excited because they’ve got family in from out of town so they’re celebrating with a barbecue, and argyle proudly slings his arm around billy as he introduces him to all his tíos and tías, tells them that this is the cool surfer kid he’s been telling them about, and billy doesn’t really like shaking everyone’s hands or being pulled in for hugs but he doesn’t mind the way argyle’s hand falls on his shoulder, not quite heavy — reassuring, steady.

they get older but this never quite changes. argyle is a touchy guy and billy feels weirdly okay with it, never shrugs argyle off, lets argyle hug him, never flinches when argyle reaches for him, sometimes even rests his head on argyle’s shoulder. once billy hurt himself, wiped out in the surf, but pretended he was fine until everyone else went home and then and only then did he lean his full aching weight on argyle, let argyle half-carry him back home.

a month before billy left for hawkins, argyle got his surfer boy job, laughing as he asked billy to teach him to ride a wave even though “it’s totally not a requirement of the job, bro, but, c’mon, man, surfer boy should have surfer boys, no?” they spend entire saturdays in the ocean, then chill in billy’s car and, later, argyle’s van, their skin smelling like sea salt and sunscreen, their fingers brushing as they pass a joint back and forth. argyle sighs, exhausted from his surf lessons, leans heavily against billy, and billy just…lets him.

the night before billy leaves, they light up one last time in the back of the van, watching the sunset through the hazy windows, both laying down, billy’s head on argyle’s chest, argyle telling him that everything is going to be okay, that this new farm town might even be cool, billy snorting, blowing smoke rings in argyle’s face, telling him he’s full of shit, soaking up every last second he has in his only home with the only person who consistently makes him feel safe.

and then and then and then. argyle arrives in hawkins. shocked and delighted to see max, of course asking after billy, having no idea how very closed off billy has become in the two years since he moved away. he’s taken to visit billy, who maybe was in the upside down or maybe was in russia but who definitely needed some medical attention when he got back. and, scary medical equipment and all, argyle beelines for him, grabs billy’s hand, grips billy’s shoulder as he tells him all about the wild, wild week he’s had, billy smiling at him the whole time, squeezing argyle’s hand as hard as he can and praying that this isn’t some illusion because somehow, someway, his safest person has come back to him.
