Yona lack of education was probably because Il decided to keep her ignorant of the world, maybe he thought it was the best way to raise the reincarnation of a god? I think the problem is that after being involved with other countries and internal conflicts Yona is still naive and doesn't really understand how politics works,which isn't good especially if she becomes queen.
I guess King Il was also ashamed of some aspects of his rule. It looked nice from the palace, but the image changed completely when you were down below…
I wish to speak about another aspect, since you mentioned it:
Hak and Yona both suffer from a certain feature: They put a person either in the drawer with the label „good“ or „bad“ on it.
A person, like Kum Ji for example is considered „bad“ and therefore can be killed. Yona doesn´t feel the slightest pang of guilt that she killed him. She intended to do so, though she knows pretty few about him...there might be some people who care about him or not, but we will most likely never know…
However, there are also people they cannot categorize...Soo Won is one of them for obvious reasons. They love(d) him, they (thought they ) knew him and still he destroyed their world.
Tumblr media
Of course he is perceived like a villain at first...like a threat or menace….That is a pretty natural reaction given what both of them encountered.
Tumblr media
However, this perception is challenged throughout the whole manga. Yona doubts sooner than Hak…
Yona is greatly disturbed in Awa, when Soo Won actually hides her and appears like the person, she once loved...That hurts…
But I do think one of the first important moments is this…
Tumblr media
Ah...so that was the reason you became this country´s king…
Tumblr media
is Yona´s realisation…
Hak has more trouble to forgive Soo Won, that is because he knows even less than Yona, since she never talked about „the revenge issue“...for obvious reasons.
However, when Hak wishes to find out more, he gets an unexpected answer and suddenly relates better...Soo Won is finally standing next to him and is not anymore „somebody unreachable to him“...that Gulfan – Soo Won´s and Yu hon´s symbol - appears is no accident!
Tumblr media
That moves Soo Won so greatly that he suffers an attack...and that brings us to...Yona´s challenge…
Tumblr media
She decides in the end to take the person who killed her father in her arms, even though she suffers from flashbacks…Yona really is an unbelievable person in that moment for me...It must have cost her greatly in that moment to do so...
Tumblr media
However, this leads to her hearing some things she hardly can believe...Soo Won is talking about Hak and that he joined the Sky Tribe Troups...- quite extraordinary in itself, but why does Soo Won love this so much? Huh?…
Yona , like Hak wishes to be aware and they get answers… and that leads us to Yu hon...who Yona thought previously, that he didn´t deserve to be king, because he was such an „evil person“.
Tumblr media
Quite similar to Kum Ji right? That is the shield and justification Yona uses for her father´s deed. I do think she might not been able to do so any longer...
Of course Yona wishes to see him like this: Her father killed him, so he must be an evil guy and it was most likely necessary, like Yona killed Kum Ji.
But now...she will realize...That Yu hon was not a monster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He laughed, was silly, loved, and had his own moral code.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
her father had faults and flaws too...and that situations are not as clear-cut and that people, like situations, are far more complicated.
Yona is supposed to realize this: That Yu hon was a human being...since Yon hi thought similarily about him at the beginning...
And she changed her opinion about him...
Tumblr media
If she realizes
that situations are far more complicated
people often cannot be simply categorized
and that sometimes even measures she condemns were not necessarily born from an evil soul...
then she is able to question the person she misses: her father...
and even more important may be able to help the people who suffer: The Hiryuu village, the dragon warriors and all their descendants...

I weirdly want more flashbacks or input about Yona’s life in the castle.
Is it weird that as much as I enjoy yona getting into the meat of dealing with these people from another country....I kindof wish we got more info on the workings of the castle....like are there any other servants or maids still around who knew yona? her old teachers who taught her music and dance? like I love her knew battle robes....but I kind of wish we got to see Yona still adjusting to not being chased anymore. waking up in her old bedroom...taking baths regularly. I wish we saw some people help yona get dressed in those robes and do her makeup and hair. especially since Yona’s fixation was her hair in the first chapter. likee I wish we saw people who intamatly knew the old more spoiled Yona. like this is prime opportunity to really show the differences in Yona.
and as much as I love seeing the differences in kye-sook and joo-doh’s reaction to Yona (getting a reminder yet again that Yona is freaking Royalty bitches! ;3)....we also don’t know what they are comparing her TO.
We kye-sook is a bit of a judgy asshole and looked down on Yona and saw her as a threat due to her connections, her legit right to the throne, her knowing of the murder and than her surprising competency to come up with a plan to use the connections she built up to back soo-won into a corner where he had to listen to her. but his master is also soo-won who’s competency makes anyone look like a shit leader by comparison. and while WE had a impression of Yona’s naivity, blinders and being a bit vain and spoiled in the beginning ....we don’t actually knows where he got his impression of Yona from. had he been watching her per king Il murder? was it word of mouth? Did he witness up close a not great first impression with Yona or something?
and we know Jo-dou had known her when she was young, had been passed over for bodyguard and was close enough that Yona called him a grump andhe knows of the close friendship and witnessed stuff. and he aparently in a secert corner of his heart wanted Yona to be safe, okay and not dead and feels uncomfortable with her having killed people or fighting with a bow.
but we haven’t seen a flashback of a moment Yona was young that helped for either of jou-dou or the advisors opinion of her. might not exactly be necessary.
but Yona did live in he castle foryears. we saw quite a bot of thtraining and stuff soo-won did to cultivate skills and his mentality and how he became as competent as he is now.
but I wonder....as much as we know Yona wasn’t very good at dancing and singing or certain stuff as mentioned a few times by Hak and Yona. and we know others see Yona as spoiled and naïve before. We also knowHak was still drawn to her and still respected her even in her ‘spoiled’ form. all everyone seems to think was Yona larned basically nothing from before and all her growth came from the loss of her dad and being released frim her house to explore and experience stuff and that she learned to be savy and awesome from those experiences.
but I kindof want to see a flashback or thoughs of someone who knew younger her to show she did learn stff from the castle before. like she had the dignity of a princess ut we just didnt get to see it since Yona had skipped out on the big speech due to being overly excited to see soo-won. We know Yona might have been spoiled but she is also good natured and had tried to be strong for her dad in her own way.
We saw the seeds of soo-won’s curiosity, lov of people and how smart he was and where he got more info when we saw young him. but I kindof wish we sw proof tha Yona always had these seeds of strength even when she was spoiled and younger.
That the dignity and ability to talk to people and keep her composure had actually always been a part of her...its just she had been spoiled and chose to be more casual and free with her speech most of the time cuz she could get away with it.
like it was still HER home. HER home terf. Mari has grown in leaps ad bounds in ways she couldn’t in the castle....but I kindof hope we get to see reminders and hints that this was always kind of incharacter for her if people had really payed attention and hadn’t over looked her.
like we’ve seen the guys train and Yona trai and be strong in fighting, and spying and battle. but even if Yona was spoiled and trusting....Yona was still the princess and specifically female.
lik I wonder if there is stuff that Yona learned as the princess and as a girl in the castle that had value that none of the guys or soo-won experienced. Like Yona talking back to people. or Yona actually being pretty good at tricking people or with words.
like what did yona learn that was preparing her to become queen that might have helped in some way.
though I could just be looking for more details to flesh out the castle and what living there was actually like. I’m still thinking of tai-jun’s mother in the firetribe who was the ‘ideal’ lady who rarely spoke. I respect mari’s strength to tell her that Yona would fight beside her guys rather than just staying behind..but there is a certain strength in that lady still. and I want more insite on whats the norm for expectations of ladies. we know that strength, physical prowess, power and winning and drinking is valued in guys. military strategy ect ect.
and we’ve see ladies like yona, gigan, lilli, and kouren showing strength in combat and leadership ability and using power to influence and get actively involved on the ground. but often with stuff we tend to expect from guys on the norm? as kouren cut her hair and was a warrior, kulbo’s sister was a warrior and leader. lilla snuck out and used her dad’s seal to influence her people an she had to sneak out to try to help and get involved.
the feminine character we’ve seen the most in the earth tribe leader’s wife with her tea hobby and cultivating a tea business. we got to see yona’s dance move peoples hearts. and we know dance and music and stuff like that was taught to her . and apparently tau-jun’s mom is considered the pinnical of what they say is the ladys role. and while she apparently keeps silent alot and speaks in her garden and keeps her thoughts to herself...mentally and emotionally that lady feels very secure and strong. and her view of the strength to hold down the household when the warriars are away(even if /i like Yona getting involved more I can still respect her). or kul’bo’s wife was pretty bad ass holding up the Homefront and her faith in her man and trying to defend Yona. and just the contrast of how she handled stuff while we know kul-bo’s sister was the strong main leader before apparently before she died.
but damn I kind of want to know more about the more female side of their culture just by itself rather than in snippets in contrasting with guy’s situation or lots of guys. like how do they deal with periods. what roles did the empress have to fullfill?
any thoughts? you can put it in notes or I learned you can reblog and put your thoughts after this so it can feel like a real discussion~

Heard Part II
Before you read, here’s Part I!
Category: Hurt and Comfort, Mild Romantic Fluff
Fandom: Yona of the Dawn
Characters: Yona, Hak, Jae-Ha
Requested by: Snow3bunny (Ao3)
Hak absentmindedly twirled his weapon in a circle in his hands as he sat hunched on the steps leading to the grand palace doors. Before him, the rain pattered steadily over the stone walkway and garden grass; it had been raining heavily for about an hour now, and the water had begun to saturate the courtyard, forming an inch-thick layer of liquid over the ground’s surface. Hak had been restless in his room, and so he had meandered out into the night to watch the rain fall from the heavens. It was soothing, but not soothing enough; he could not shake that prickling at the base of his neck, those waves of shivers that made goosebumps rise across his skin and adrenaline sing in his veins- that feeling that something was wrong. Hak’s instincts were tempered steel and made very few mistakes; if he was reading the atmosphere of the castle accurately, his very soul scenting the minute change in the air like a prized bloodhound, then something was most assuredly afoot. However, he had no idea what, nor how to figure that out.
He was almost certain, however, that it had to do with the princess.
His hand snapped around the staff of his weapon as loud splashing resounded amidst the consistent pebbling of the raindrops. One splash, then another, then another, and then there he was, the green-haired dragon with that damn smug smirk he always wore on his long face. Hak narrowed his eyes as he appeared before him but resumed lackadaisically twirling the weapon around now that it was apparent there was no threat.
“Out for a midnight walk? You’ll catch cold like that, dragon or no,” he scoffed, propping his elbow on his knee so that he could lean his cheek into his hand. Jae-ha’s mouth curled further into a leer, but Hak tensed when he saw the dullness in his normally mischievous eyes. He could see it in the lines in his face; something was up. “What is it?” he asked, straightening up to stare at him intently.
“It’s Yona.” Nightmarish scenarios immediately began flashing through Hak’s mind and he captured the staff in a white-knuckled grip as a cold flush blasted through every vein in his body. “She’s very upset,” he added quickly before Hak could devolve to quickly into mania. His dripping jade green hair flopped around his shoulders as he took hasty looks around, before he hurriedly stalked over to Hak and held a hand up to cover his mouth as he murmured, “Something is wrong with the king, apparently. She’s tight-lipped about it; no doubt, it’s something that can easily get you and Yoon killed.” Hak’s mania had petered out into a consistent cold pulsing, but it spiked again- frustratingly so- at the mention that something was the matter with Soo-Won. He had never imagined it possible to hate someone so intensely but still never wish them any sort of harm, but that’s what he felt about his once best friend. His eyebrows dove down into sharp peaks, considering what he was about to do.
It was stupid, and reckless, and dangerous. All parties involved could get in deep trouble. Whatever Yona had been scheming against Soo-Won in her private time could effectively go up in flames.
Still, his princess needed him, and he be damned if he wasn’t there in her time of need.
“Take me to her.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Her dress was a puddle of pink around her as she kneeled down beside the window, face buried into her hands as she cried softly. She didn’t notice the shadow of Jae-ha and Hak’s forms follow her as they landed lightly in the windowsill. She whipped around with a gasp as Jae-ha lightly tapped his fingertips against the cold glass, and when she realized it was the two of them, she jumped forward to scramble and open the latch.
“Hak!” she cried as he hopped down into the room. She immediately latched herself to him, burying her face deep into his soaked robes. He leaned down over her as he gently embraced her, stroking her soft dawn-colored hair. Before his face could soften into an expression of affection, Jae-Ha coughed loudly behind him.
“I feel like such a third wheel,” he griped loudly. Hak felt Yona heat up in a body-wide blush at his obvious remark, and Hak glared at him over his shoulder. Smug bastard. Hak looked down at Yona to find her teary eyes staring up at him, wide and hurt and pleading, but also alight with weak happiness.
“Hak… I’ve missed you so much,” she whispered. His face wasn’t sure what expression to make; though normally he would’ve been overjoyed to hear her say such a thing, with Jae-ha there, it was incredibly awkward. The dragon was currently playing with the curtains with an amused look. He was blatantly enjoying making Hak shy, apparently. Hak made a mental note to give him a good whack upside his head later. Right now, the princess demanded his immediate attention. He swept his thumbs across her reddening cheeks to wipe away her tears.
“Don’t worry, Princess. I’m here now,” he assured her softly. His hands stiffened against her face as he recalled why Jae-ha had brought him there in the first place; Yona was upset about something concerning Soo-Won. His mind immediately flew to dastardly possibilities; could the king have done something to her? What more could he do to add to Yona’s suffering? It was already bad enough that she was mostly forbidden from interacting with them. He felt his jaw tensing in ire. Soo-Won… You bastard… She doesn’t deserve any of this! “Princess,” he stated firmly, “tell me what’s wrong. Did Soo-Won do something to you? I swear, I’ll kill-“
“No!” she interjected quickly. With a meek whimper, she buried her face back into his chest, her small hands twisting the fabric of his clothes further. “No… It’s nothing like that…” Her soft whisper was so muffled by his dense clothes that he could barely hear her. Hak stared down at the distraught princess. He felt so powerless. What burden was she bearing that she couldn’t even tell him? With a gentle sigh, he grabbed both her hands to guide them around to his back, allowing her to squeeze him in a desperate hug. Her shoulder shook with wracking sobs that she was desperately trying to keep quiet. “Hak… What… What should I do?” As she shook her head against him, her tears smeared in glittering lines across his upper chest. “I don’t want to lose anyone… Not even… Not even Soo-Won. I can’t forgive him for what he did, not ever, but… I also can’t bear the thought of him dying. Every time you two fight, it pains me so deeply. Do you hate me for that?”
Admittedly, Hak did feel a deep, sharp stab of jealously cut through his heart. It made every cell in his body pulse at once. Yet… He wasn’t angry. How could he be? He himself was unsure of how he truly felt about his childhood friend. If it really came down to it, even after everything… Could he really allow Soo-Won to die? He talked a big game, but if it came down to it, could he really kill Soo-Won himself? If he was truly, brutally honest with himself, he didn’t think he could.
“No. Of course not, Princess.”
“How did things end up like this?” she lamented woefully. “The three of us… Used to exist so peacefully under the same sky, but now… Everything is so confusing. I don’t even know anymore if Soo-Won was ever with us in the first place. Did we ever know him at all? When we laughed together and played together, what did he really feel? Were any of those smiles honest?” As she further dissolved into misery, Hak could feel his heart clenching in his chest. He didn’t know what to do. Why did he never know what to do? He could lay all her enemies low, but when it came to the things that really mattered, Hak never really knew what to say.
Soo-Won was always the one who was really good at that.
So, he didn’t say anything. He enveloped her in a tight hug, forehead falling into her short waving tresses of bright red hair. “Was I wrong all this time? Should I have done something differently? Hak… I’m sorry… I got you in this mess…” she croaked weakly.
“Don’t say sorry,” he growled. His arms locked tighter around her, as if he could forcibly purge all the ill feelings swirling around in her body. “Never say sorry to me. Never bow your head to me. You are the princess. Where you go, I will follow. Whatever decisions you make, I will honor. It’s that simple. I do these things not because I feel obligated, but because you are my princess which I am proud to serve. Don’t forget that.” At first, his voice had a hard edge to it, but as he went on, it gradually softened. “Princess… I know it’s overwhelming right now, but what you must do is think of what’s best for your kingdom. You are not alone in this. You have me, and Yoon, and your dragons. If you told us you wanted to raze this very castle to the ground, we would do it gladly,” he whispered into her crimped curled of hair. He felt Yona exhale deeply and slump against him with crushing relief. Good… She heard me.
“Yes,” she breathed into him. “You’re right, Hak. Thank you.”
It took her a few minutes to detach herself from him. He didn’t begrudge her for it. He didn’t know when the next time he would see her would be, so he allowed her to soak up as much as his presence as she could to get her through the trials ahead. When she finally did pull away from him, she wiped the lingering tears from her puffy red eyes before giving him a confident smile. That determined sparkle was back in her eyes. She would be all right.
“We should get going. They won’t react kindly if we’re caught,” Jae-ha quipped nonchalantly from behind him. Hak continued to stand tersely in front of the princess; honestly, he didn’t want to leave. It was hell, not being able to see her, to know she was safe. He knew he had to go, though. She stared expectantly up at him, waiting for him to turn back. Before he did, he gently took her chin between her thumb and forefinger, tilted her face up, and pressed a light kiss to her forehead.
Then he let Jae-ha take him away before he could get embarrassed and make a fool of himself.
The dragon brought him into the palace garden. The rain was still falling in a steady drizzle. Within a minute, his black hair was slicked to his forehead and his clothes slightly heavier from the amount of moisture they soaked up. Jae-ha dropped him down behind the sturdy trunk of a sprawling tree that provided ample protection from any prying eyes. Jae-ha went to say his good-byes, and that’s when everything hit Hak like a cannonball; groaning, he slumped heavily against his side and laid his head down on his shoulder. His legs felt like jelly, shaking violently as his knees did their best to support his warrior’s bulk.
“Droopy-Eyes, just… Just let me… For just a minute.” He hated the obvious tremble in his voice, but there wasn’t much he could do about it. His hand screwed into the area above his heart, twisting the fabric there like a whirlpool. It felt like someone had stabbed him, really. It wasn’t often that Hak’s emotions got the better of him; for the princess’ sake as well as that of his pride, he kept a tight lid on all those inconvenient feelings. However, he wasn’t infallible. Every once in a while, they would bubble over, boiling and intense. His face scrunched up in agony, teeth bared like fangs as he tried to shove them back into the box he had buried them in. Now was not the time. He was grateful for the rain streaming down his face, because it masked the prickling tears brimming in the corners of his eyes. He was grateful for Jae-ha, too, who just silently supported him without offering a sarcastic barb or teasing quip. He could be a nice guy when he wanted to be.
“It’s cruel,” the green-haired man remarked suddenly. Hak lifted his head to see him staring off into the distance; he followed his gaze to a high tower window, where he could just make out Soo-Won sitting in the window watching the rain fall over his kingdom. Hak could almost think that he looked lonely and sad as he was doing so. The spiteful part of him snarled that it was no less than he deserved. “Yona, you, the king… The fate of the country all lies with you. It’s a heavy burden for anyone to bear.”
“Yeah, well,” Hak huffed as he forced himself back into a standing position. “I’ll take the weight of the world if it means I can see the princess smile again.” His eyes narrowed as Soo-Won rose from the window and wrenched the curtain shut.
Yona heard him. She had the strength to keep going, to find out how all of this would play out. That’s all that mattered right now. Now, Hak just had to wait for his princess’ orders.
Waiting was something he could do well.
Yona ch.146 spoilers
Akatsuki no Yona chapter 146 “A shield against a distorted justice” summary
Please don’t repost/reuse my scans and translations without permission. Tumblr reblog is fine.
Tumblr media
Tae-Woo steps in the Shin side of the camp and retrieves his spear. The assassins are stunned for a while then start threatening him but Gobi tells them to stop. He whispers that they shouldn’t antagonize people from Kouka as they still need Soo-Won’s support. Instead, Gobi treats Tae-Woo like a child, telling him it’s bad to enter their country with a weapon and this is no playground. Tae-Woo apologizes but says he thought he was about to witness a murder so that’s why he reacted quickly. He also knows Yotaka is Voldo’s (aka Hak’s friend) acquaintance.
Yotaka collapses from pain. Gobi wonders if he’ll have no other choice but to kill Tae-Woo now while no one is watching. Yotaka tells Tae-Woo he’s not like Voldo. The Wind tribe General faces Gobi’s group and asks them if they’re really from the anti-war faction, because they sure don’t look anything like Voldo. He heard a bit of their story from Hak, but is the anti-war faction really supposed to carry weapons and go around killing people? Especially when the guys from the pro-war faction were still hesitating about proceeding with the war?
Gobi tells his assassins to kill him in one blow, he doesn’t want to draw people’s attention. Right at that moment, Han-Dae and another from the Wind Tribe appear at the top of the barricade, looking for General Tae-Woo. Gobi’s like “General? This kid?”. The 2 new players realize what’s going on and are about to jump to the other side to defend their friend. Tae-Woo stops them. He wants Han-Dae to go and fetch Ayame, and Nobu (the other Wind tribe guy) to help him carry Yotaka.
Gobi knows he can’t afford to kill a General. He’s satisfied with having wounded Yotaka, and wants to focus on Kouren instead. Unfortunately for him, an assassin reports she’s with the monsters from Kouka. Gobi has a sort of crazed, grinning look on him when he hears the monsters have appeared. Gobi’s group leaves and so does the soldier who injured Yotaka.
Yotaka wants to go to Kouren’s side. Tae-Woo tells him he can’t with his injury and assures him Kouren is safe. Hak and Yona are with her. Even a thousand soldiers couldn’t beat the thunder beast from Kouka. Since he’s Voldo’s friend, Tae-Woo will help him so he better not die! Yotaka says he doesn’t know anyone named Voldo then faints. Tae-Woo comments that something ugly is happening in Shin right now.
Farther into the camp, Gobi tells Kouren’s soldiers that Yotaka vanished. Another cloaked man from his clique adds they haven’t seen Neguro or Kouren in their mansion either. The soldiers begin to worry, then Gobi delivers the fatal blow: it’s because they fled before the war! They must’ve realized they didn’t stand any chance against Kouka’s army. A soldier explains he’s been having doubts on Kouren’s ability to rule the country ever since the Crazy Mizari™ incident. Namsek gets angry and tells him to stop being rude. Gobi’s man objects that it was Kouren’s fault for appointing those people as 5 Stars.
Author note: I am very grateful to all the staff involved with producing the Sei arc drama CDs when they were already so busy. I hope you readers will like them too!
Namsek draws his sword: he won’t let them badmouth Her Highness like that! Wrong move, Gobi’s man takes this opportunity to point to the other soldiers and citizens how Kouren’s men are so quick to resort to violence. It’s all because of their thirst for blood. Namsek strikes him (off panel), and another soldier offers to help him in the ensuing fight.
Gobi is elated. He tells everyone to go look for Kouren together, and restrain Princess Tao. They must be hiding somewhere... The camp empties, deaf to Namsek’s cries that Soo-Won’s troops will be here soon. Gobi fuels their hatred, reminding them of what Crazy Mizari™ did. The monsters from Kouka are also forced to dance to Kouren’s tune, it seems... They must hurry and save them to appease Kouka’s anger. If people previously loyal to Kouren change their mind, the Gods will surely save them.
The scene switches to Yona’s group. She’s half carrying Hak on her shoulder, and he doesn’t look well. Yona tells him she’ll carry him so he can hop on her back. Hak says he’ll just crush her, but Yona says it’s fine, she’s stronger now. He complies and they both fall face first on the ground XD. Hak glances at her and she’s flustered. He tells her he’d like to talk to her after everything is over. Yona is surprised but says ok. Zeno, who is helping Shin-Ah walk, looks at the sky and says he has a bad feeling (the atmosphere is heavy). He’s felt it before, back in Kin province when soldiers from Kai regrouped and went on destroying things. A lot of people’s nervousness and hatred pools up in a dark emotion. Voldo says they’ve arrived to the camp and should go look for Yotaka. Kouren looks at the camp and sees a huge group of people (citizens, soldiers and Gobi’s men) waiting for them, anger showing on their face.
Suddenly a rope comes flying from behind to ensnare Shin-Ah’s neck. He’s still paralyzed from using his powers earlier and can’t do anything. He’s dragged away, caught by a soldier from Shin. Zeno, Kija and Jae-Ha get caught soon after and dragged on the ground the same way. Gobi sees Kija’s hand and seems to recognize him (”I see... a white scaly hand...”). The dragons are too weak to use their powers (or maybe something prevents them to, Kija only says he can’t use his strength).
Gobi advises Kouren’s group against fighting back. He holds people from Kouka hostages. Still, he didn’t expect Kouren to show up herself. She captured Tao, used Mizari and used fear to control the citizens... the country of Shin has become a huge mess. She only needs to look into her people’s eyes to see the extent of the damage she caused. *Cut to 2 panels’ worth of angry faces*. Kouren tells him the 4 dragons have nothing to do with it, and demands he releases them.
Gobi: They have nothing to do with it, you say? Then why did you imprison them?!
Gobi: It’s because you wanted to use their powers for yourself! To sacrifice them! You tried to make an enemy out of Kouka, didn’t you?!
Citizen: I... I’ve seen Lord Yotaka capture those people...
Gobi: See...? You used violence to try and bend them to your will. This is so like you to do that...
Tao: Priest Gobi, you used violence too...!
Gobi: Princess Tao! You’re unharmed...! It was all to protect you...
Kouren wants to know where Yotaka is. Gobi says he has no idea, he’s been searching for him too. Neguro and Mizari are nowhere to be found as well... They must’ve fled before the war. Kouren gets angry and aims an arrow at him. How dare he speak of her loyal subordinates like that! She’ll kill him right now!
Gobi’s assassins are ready to shoot, and Hak takes up his spear, but Yona steps in front of Kouren and orders both sides to drop their weapons. The assassins fire their arrows anyway. Hak shouts “Princess!”, the dragons are still on the ground and seem both astonished and angry. Suddenly a wave of power emanates from their 4 bodies, shaping up into dragons that shield Yona from the arrows. Everyone is speechless, except Gobi. “These... these are... the four dragons of Kouka...”
Hisa’s thoughts on the chapter:
Tae-Woo starts taking quick decisions and acting like the leader he is, that’s nice :D For Gobi’s plan of marrying Tao and SW to work, he can’t afford to kill a General from Kouka. Yet his assassins shot at the DDHHB (without his orders). Once/If he learns about the history between Yona and SW, will he try to kill them and offer their heads to Kouka as a sign of goodwill? I love how manipulative he is and how is using real facts like Kouren capturing the dragons to make his lies sound like the truth. Yup, I’ll be sad if he is defeated too easily. But I think he’ll stick around a bit longer. There’s some explaining to do about the dying King of Shin, his possible ability to hear the gods, and the fact that this chapter lets me think he already knows about the dragons and their powers.
Which leaves that last reveal... a new power we’ve never heard of. The last page conveniently didn’t show Zeno’s face. I wonder if he knew about it. We’ll see next chapter how they all react. This could have something to do with the shield from the prophecy, for this new powers seem to require the 4 dragons to combine their will.
I expect Soo-Won will arrive soon, and when he stops by the Kouka side of the camp, Yotaka will be there to tell him everything he needs to know.
Detective Genius: Part 8 of 8
Chapter Eight: The Stunning Conclusion! The Justice-Selling Nurse and the Case of the High Road
Synopsis: Yoon is a financially struggling nurse and recognizes a trauma victim, Taejun, as someone from his boarding house. The victim’s brother, Kyoga, suspects foul play and offers Yoon money to figure out who caused this. The landlord, Soo-won, discourages Yoon from getting involved, but in order to support himself and his adoptive father Ik-soo, Yoon investigates the suspicious other residents–and then some. Genre: Modern Day AU, (Attempted!?) Murder Mystery in Classic ‘Who Done It?’ Style, General. Could be read as comedy, drama, or melodrama. Words: 2,602 Warnings: I don’t kill anyone, but I do make them suffer a little (sorry, Taejun, somebody had to be the victim). Probably nothing that would make people squeamish, as the focus is on the plot. Find the other chapters in the master post.
-------
It was getting close to 1am. Hak and I exchanged glances in the hall outside Yona’s door. “You sure you don’t want to bring Soo-won for this?” I asked him.
He shook his head. “I think he’s been trying to help her cover for something.”
“That sounds likely to me too.”
Hak gave two soft knocks at the door, then grabbed the door knob as though this was what he’d usually do. He opened it a creak and asked, “Yona?”
“Hak!?” her voice rang out in surprise, followed by the sounds of shifting around and moving things and harsh whispers. Hak furrowed his eyebrows and pushed the door open, revealing Yona at her closet door, trying to stuff a man about her height inside. He had long, unbrushed blonde hair, a ratty green scarf and long, dirty coat, and a stench that made me gag even from a distance. He was eating a handful of crème puffs.
Hak stared at the Yona. Yona stared at Hak. I stared in disbelief, and the blonde man said, “Hi.”
There was no more use in trying to hide her putrid visitor, so Yona invited us all to sit inside while she explained. Yona and I sat on the floor while Hak and the other man sat on the beanbags. “His name is Zeno,” she said. “He’s a homeless guy I met a couple weeks ago while I was having a bad day. I didn’t really feel like I had anyone to talk to about it—if I told Hak that Taejun was bothering me, Hak would want to fix the problem himself, and if I told Soo-won about Hak, Soo-won would smile and ask why I don’t just let Hak handle it, and if… well, I don’t really have any other friends besides Hak and Soo-won. I was feeling so powerless, and when Zeno asked me for something to eat, I thought, why not?’ and took him out to dinner. I found out that Zeno is really, really good listener. I felt so much better, so invited him home with me.”
“You did what?”
“See! I knew you’d get mad, Hak! Oh—please don’t tell Soo-won. Please?”
“What kind of single young girl brings a homeless man back to her apartment—”
“This one,” Zeno pointed to her. “It wasn’t going to be for free, though. Zeno offered to teach the miss how to protect herself.”
“And why did you accept?” Hak asked, still incredulous.
She puffed out her cheeks and looked away. “I thought it’d be nice not to have to trouble you so much.”
“I should be troubled if your misplaced sense of generosity is going to get you into danger.”
“I knew you wouldn’t understand! Zeno’s not like that at all! And besides,” she sounded more sheepish as she looked over to Zeno, “It’s not just that I was paying him to teach me. Zeno’s a good friend to me, so I wanted to let him sleep and eat indoors sometimes.”
“Aw, Miss, Zeno appreciates it. I’m glad I can be your friend, even if I can’t come inside.”
“Just a moment, Yona,” I said, rubbing my forehead as a few more of the pieces started coming together. “Letting him into your apartment is one thing, but stealing things is another.”
“Stealing? What do you mean?”
I pointed to Zeno’s handful of crème puffs. “Food, Yona! Joon-gi had been complaining about those going missing.”
“Ah!” she gasped. “Wait, those weren’t for everyone?”
“No, the freezer is only down there for extra space. You can’t help yourself to whatever’s there.”
Her cheeks turned almost as red as her hair. “Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”
I sighed. Typical rich person misunderstandings, I guessed. “It’s alright. Soo-won already replaced… say. Zeno, you’ve never taken the elevator, have you?”
“Nope.”
“We’d have smelled him there for sure,” added Hak.
“Soo-won must already know,” I said, much to Yona’s shock. “He helped cover your tracks. Or rather, he mopped them up. And now that I think about it, it must have been your footsteps that Yuno was hearing in the staircase.”
“Oops. Sorry, Zeno tried to be quiet.”
“So,” squeaked Yona, “Was that all?”
Hak and I looked to each other, then to the floor. It seemed he was going to let me do the talking, so I dug the shard of china out of my pocket and held it up to her, and by the look on her face I could tell she recognized it. “We came to talk to you about Taejun,” I said. “There was a witness when he was injured in the alley last night. A young homeless man with a squirrel said he saw this fall on Taejun’s head.”
“Zeno knows him!” the blond man volunteered. “That kid’s got really good eye-sight. If he says he saw something, then he saw it.”
“Yona,” I went on, “Would you mind telling us in detail what happened?”
She frowned, but under everyone’s expectant glances, she knew she had no room to escape. “He hadn’t bothered me for days after the man in the room above mine scared him and Hak hit him. Then yesterday he came to my room and said he wanted to start over.”
“Start over?”
“I don’t know what he meant. He was being so strange, saying he wanted to speak my language or something. He started talking about the flowers he brought, like which flowers meant what kind of love…”
“Aw,” smiled Zeno. “That’s sweet. He probably looked all that up himself.”
“Looks like that’s not her language,” added Hak.
“And there was a pineapple in the middle. He was saying it meant I was perfect. I told him he was nuts, and he said he didn’t bring any nuts. But then he said, ‘no wait, I have nuts! Really!’ and he had me against the wall, so I used what Zeno taught me and jabbed him in the ribs!” she said with some demonstration, which made Hak look surprised, curious, and mildly impressed. She continued, “he backed away and grabbed the flowers and said, ‘don’t take that the wrong way, just take the flowers, they’re my feelings’ and things like that. So I took the flowers. I took them and I threw them out the window.”
“Including the pineapple?”
“Including the pineapple.”
“Miss,” Zeno’s eyes were wide. “What a waste of a good pineapple.”
For the time being, I resisted adding that defenestrating pineapples was dangerous. “And what happened after that?”
She frowned. “He seemed really hurt by that. He looked out the window after them, and his voice was a little strange when he looked back at me, like he was about to cry.”
“And then?”
“He said that even if I don’t accept his feelings, even if I toss them out the window, they’re still his to keep. And then he left.”
“Probably to go gather his hurt feelings from the alleyway,” said Hak.
“Presumably,” I said, and then looked to Yona and held up the shard again. “Then, whether it was with lethal intention or not, that was when you dropped the dish on his head.”
Her eyes grew wide and wavered, but she sat completely still. Hak and Zeno turned their eyes toward her, and she began to shake.
I kept my gaze locked on her. “Well, Yona?”
“I… I didn’t.”
“But Yona, this is part of your dish set, isn’t it?”
“It is, but… I didn’t do it.”
I wanted to believe her. I really did! But if it wasn’t her, then who was it? I wished she’d hurry up and admit it so it could be out of my hands. If the poor couldn’t run from justice, then she shouldn’t be able to either. She could pay Kyoga for Taejun’s pain and suffering and then we would all be done with it. I wished she’d hurry up and admit it!
“If she says she didn’t do it, then she didn’t.”
All of us turned to Hak. He stared back at me, stern in his eye contact.
“Hak,” said Yona.
“It’s sucks being accused for something that’s not your fault. If she says she didn’t do it, then hear her out.”
“Let’s not rush into this, Lad,” said Zeno. “Miss, could anyone else have had the same dishes?”
“Yes, I gave a few of them to Yuno.”
“But Yuno wouldn’t have done it. She likely has an alibi and no motive. Plus, her room faces the south.”
“Lad, what exactly did the kid with the squirrel say?”
I thought for a moment. “He didn’t say much. First he said there were falling flowers and a pineapple. Then when I asked him what hit Taejun, he found the shard and gave it to me. Then when I asked what floor it came from, he said the fourth.”
Zeno’s eyes and mouth both swung wide open. “Oh no! That’s the problem!”
We all drew closer. “What?”
“The boy can’t count!”
It felt like a speeding car had gone to a screeching halt and crashed inside my brain. He couldn’t count?
“Zeno has tried to teach him, but he doesn’t pick it up much at all. He always gets close, but he gets the numbers all mixed up.”
“Then that means it could have been any of the floors on the north side, not only the fourth.”
“But then who was it?”
Even if the car that had been cruising along in my mind had crashed, the wheels and gears that had popped off were still going, rolling in every which direction. The dish that fell was not necessarily from the fourth floor. Something dropped from Joon-gi’s room might not have knocked him out. Kija didn’t know Yona or Yuno well enough to have gotten the dish from them. Yuno would have had it, or she would have given it away to someone else. If she gave things away, it was usually plants, like the ones she gave to Ik-soo.
She gave plants to Ik-soo yesterday. Our room is the third floor over the north alley.
Now, even my breath came to a skidding halt.
##########
Ik-soo and I had a long, long talk that night. I still can’t remember the last time I had cried that hard.
It started with me yelling and accusing him of not being careful enough, and telling him what he had done. Then it was him realizing it and apologizing for it. He sank in guilt, I swelled in anger. I lectured him about what this was going to mean for us now; especially if Kyoga wanted to hold us responsible. Ik-soo apologized, and looking deeper, he drew a confession out of me about only getting involved for the money, not for justice.
Ik-soo didn’t lecture me back. He knew he didn’t need to. Instead, he got us talking about what we were to do next; how we were to make amends, how we were going to brave a new financial struggle. He stroked my head as I sobbed, and he said we’d have more tough times ahead. But we’d do it on the high road, he said, and wherever it would take us, we’d go together.
It was a long and exhausting discussion, but I didn’t regret it in the least.
*********
With my eyes still red and puffy, I got busy early that Monday. I started upstairs in Kija’s room by making sure Jaeha was hydrated and recovering, as well has having Kija and Hak present while I made a phone call. I used my position as a nurse to reexplain Hak’s situation to Joo-doh, and Kija backed me up by admitting he had not taken adequate precautions to warn Hak of the effects. Joo-doh was surprised, but understanding. Hak was visibly less stressed once he was cleared from doubt, and he accepted Kija’s apology. Jaeha, meanwhile, was happy he still had anything else of his insides. (He later apologized to Yuno for the volume on his TV downstairs, and they eventually became friends. Geun-tae was never sure what to makes of this.)
Down at the bottom of the apartment, I caught Soo-won vacuuming the front hallway. He greeted me with a wide, cheerful smile. “Good morning, Yoon!”
“Soo-won!” I pointed at him. “What kind of a landlord are you?”
He paused and stared back, green eyes gleaming. “One who likes to clean?”
“No one should feel like their guests have to sneak around the stairs. The elevator is for everyone’s use.”
“Oh,” he chuckled. “That is a little unfair, isn’t it?”
“Speaking of unfair,” my volume dropped, “Ik-soo and I might need to renegotiate our contract again soon. We’ve had some expected expenses pop up that we need to take care of.”
His smile turned wry, and his eyes softened. “I was afraid you might.”
“We understand if you have your limits.”
“I do,” he nodded. “Let’s see first if you need it. There’s always other ways to make arrangements and work things out.”
I nodded back, my eyes still stinging from all the events of the past several hours.
**********
After that, I went out to the hospital, where I had my most important arrangement to make. Kyoga, not expecting to see me until that evening, was very surprised that I showed up early enough to take some overtime hours. Before that, I wanted to take my time to explain the sequence of events to him, accept the blame on Ik-soo’s behalf, and offer him the money we had immediately available. There were the biggest bills I had ever taken out of an ATM, all smooth from their lack of transactional use. I promised that this would be the first of enough installments to cover the costs of Taejun’s treatment.
I felt that money in my hands longer than I had ever handled any cash. I had to wait several moments for Kyoga to process the information, and then put his hand to mine. He pushed back, shaking his head with such force that his long locks swished this way and that. “This isn’t necessary.”
“But it’s our fault—”
“It was clearly an accident, and you’re sorry. Besides, my brother has some fault for being out there anyway. He’ll recover soon enough, there’s no reason to press charges.” He looked over at Taejun, who stared blankly out the window. Kyoga let out a small sigh through his nostrils. “I only hope that his heart will recover soon too.”
**********
A few hours later, on my shift, I came in to check on him. Kyoga had gone home for the day, and Taejun was curled up on his bed with his knees against his chest.
“You should be able to go home tomorrow,” I said, forcing optimism.
“I don’t want to go home. I can’t face Yona. Ohhhhh, but I don’t have anywhere else I can move! I was delinquent on all my payments everywhere else, so that’s the only place that’ll take me in! That’s it! I’m going to be homeless! I’m a bum, that’s all I am! They should have just left me there in all that trash!”
“For what it’s worth,” I replied, “The homeless guys I’ve met are pretty nice.”
He sniffled and searched my eyes with his teary ones. “Are you sure?”
I assured him he would be fine, and in my heart, I felt Ik-soo and I were probably going to be fine too. As long as there was still a high road to take, we’d try to stay on it.   (But maybe we’d try to stay away from high windows.)
Some thoughts on chapter 136 (and also Soo-Won)
After reading all the spoilers, I have so many mixed feelings and questions about Soo-Won…
1.) Is it really the right decision for the country to go into war? I feel like this could be his first failure in order to restore the kingdom.
2.) If he and Kouren have already contacted each other and Kouren rejected the idea of reconcilation, it must have been due to the conditions Soo-Won set. But what exactly was his plan before Kouren started to take action? To turn Xing into a vassal nation of Kouka, like Princess Tao suggested? I don’t see anything wrong with it. Both Kouka and Xing would most likely benefit from it. And let’s not forget he did the same with the country of Sei. If the three countries decide to form one big nation, invasions from the Kai Empire would be less likely due to the country’s strength. And that’s what Soo-Won’s plan is all about, right? I also understand how Kouren might feel… But she also needs to get rid of her personal grudge if she wishes the best for her country.
3.) Why is Soo-Won just so cold hearted? His conversation with Min-Soo almost made me cry. It’s his responsibility to protect the country, that’s true… But why isn’t he able to feel anything? His latest actions almost looked like “I don’t care what you say, it does’nt matter to me how you feel about it anyway.”. Like I mentioned in one of my previous postings, I would like to see more of his human traits. They need to be restored, because I absolutely want to get a glimpse into his deepest feelings (if he still has some). I want to understand him and why he’s doing all this.
4.) Is Kusanagi actually planning on turning him into a villain? After showing us some of his bright sides and what he has accomplished in the short time of being a king? Is it really going to be that simple? I trusted the author in creating a beautiful storyline, and also liked how there was no black and white during the entire series. What would be the point of misleading her readers by showing Soo-Won’s good sides from time to time?
I have to be honest here… It’s Soo-Won’s character that drew me into the series. I’m mostly following the manga because I’ve never seen such a great and complex character before, which is why I don’t want to see him as the bad guy. It’d be impossible for me to hate him.
5.) Is a reconcilation with Hak and Yona still possible? At this point I’m not so sure anymore… The storyline once implied that there could be some sort of reconcilation at the end. But now that he’s about to go into war (with the Wind Tribe also being involved) I don’t see why Yona and Hak would be able to forgive him so easily. As some of you pointed out, the mangaka really seems to like reconcilations. She’s done it in some of her previous works after all. So one can only hope, right?
I’m so sorry, but I had to write this down… It bothers me so much and I still can’t stop thinking about it. 😢😭
AnY Chapter 204 Review
It was a good chapter, although politically, it disappointed me.
There have been debates among readers about whether or not Su-Won was in character. The way he compartmentalized everything (but now slowly failing to do so) was, but I don't know about how hastily he jumped to kill Mei-nyan. Honestly a very Su-Won thing to do would rather be to pretend to accept her offer, use her knowledge to win the war, then kill her after. Did the thought of taking her hostage NOT occur to him? What happened to the king who seeks to minimize sacrifices? Who strategizes the most efficient path?
This time, it seems he had no patience for that because she went into a tirade about Hiryuu being great. As Soo-Won believes that blood-relation doesn't just entitle you to anything (as expected, he killed his own uncle), the fact that this applied to Mei may have played into Soo-Won's resentment to think it was better if she was killed, as she seemed no different from Il.
Evil Twins mistranslated this, but Su-Won does NOT say that he got ill after ascending the throne - Mei-Nyan tells him he “should be aware of the existence of King Hiryuu” which triggers the headache and flashback of Il that we’ve seen 5 times now. Phew, does this traumatize him.
Tumblr media
Now we have actually seen such a similar expression before! On his mother!
Tumblr media
“The beautiful hair caused Yon-Hi to remember the existence of King Hiryuu”
Does the pain get stronger the more aware the descendants are of King Hiryuu? A legitimate question of what causes the illness to sprout.
Su-Won’s response in return, “I’m so fed up with it (the pain)” shows he is at his wits end now because this woman triggered yet another headache because she made him think of King Hiryuu.
He says his thoughts aloud, clearly for the first time, “I wonder why the reincarnation of King Hiryuu and the dragons were born.”
Hearing the outright rejection of King Hiryuu, Yona is petrified.
Tumblr media
And it’s interesting, because she has never heard this direct attack on who she is until this point. We as readers have seen Su-Won reject God, so, SO many times to count. This is the first time Yona sees it in the present. This is the first time she also sees it directed straight at her.
Because it’s pretty much Su-Won wishing Yona was never born, right?
Until the betrayal, they had a genuine friendship, and even then Su-Won clearly still cared about her, so surely Yona had never imagined that Su-Won would ever say something like this, that it would be nice if she were never born. It is quite jarring. Were the years they spent all a lie, then?
Moving on, we then see Mei-nyan understanding that negotiations have collapsed. She begins to freak out, and when Hyoo-ri appears, she bolts.
I must say, for supposedly a strategist, Mei-nyan was pretty naive and reckless. It appears that the others were prepared to kill her prior to this meeting, but she comes thinking her talk would succeed. She doesn't even think of a back-up plan in the case the king doesn't agree.
She doesn't even tell Su-Won that she was previously a general. We all know, being a general is 100x more valuable to him then being a descendant or a concubine with false intel, any day.
I can argue that the negotiations might have not failed if she'd not talked about Hiryuu and instead about being a general or how shitty Kai treated her and how she actually is loyal to Kouka. She is reckless, that one! How did she ever become a general with such a personality?!?! People like her certainly don’t live long.
Tumblr media
Luckily, Jae-ha appears to save the day. And I actually really like this scene, because... Mei-Nyan is clearly affected by how the same dragon who vowed to protect Yona and did not let Mei-Nyan hit her, is NOW protecting her.
Tumblr media
This is what she always wanted, and she is shooooook. Look at her pained eyebrows. I feel for Mei-nyan here. Also Jae-ha, ouch.
Yona runs to save the day with her merciful nature, as she always seems to do. Kye-Sook, who finds it a “quaint” quality like her late father, asks her to stand down. (most hilarious line)
Then Yona asks Su-Won for his opinion, but Su-Won, who was already in annoyed mode, is now directing it towards Yona, who has come running to interfere. He is fed up thinking about it and does not want to deal with her.
Yona still does not back down. “Turn over here! Even if you don’t need me, even if you’re fed up, look me in the eye and talk!”
Very strong words. Until this I have never seen Yona be so direct with Su-Won, even if she harbored hatred, even if she was very calm. And this probably is because she felt rather hurt by Su-Won’s words. Understandable.
Next we see Su-Won explode: “I already said, this doesn’t concern you!”
Tumblr media
OKAY we get it Su-Won, calm the F down.
Yeeeeeesh, this rude spitting viper is the same guy who was only gentle and kind with his younger cousin??????
Tumblr media
let’s be honest if Hak saw Su-Won shouting at Yona he would wreck him 100x harder than he already wanted to
.....Perhaps we should just accept that familial ties don’t matter to this dude, especially if you’re a King Hiryuu reincarnation telepathically blowing his brains out because he doesn’t pay you enough attention. Can you blame him?
His line is rather ambiguous though. Does he mean it like, “stop being a fucking nuisance, I’m the king right now, this concerns me not you”
OR is it like, “this conflict I have with King Hiryuu doesn’t concern you, you are Yona!” Maybe he doesn’t want Yona to feel bad about being born like his mother did?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe he is struggling with both meanings. Who knows.
Now, after that Yona attempts to make him see past the entire conflict with Mei-nyan’s interest in Hiryuu and the dragons AND the fact that she has knowledge of the secret.
And I can see Yona's point. Yon-Hi's existential crisis, seeing a red haired girl "steal" what belonged to her clan, is similar to Mei-nyan's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It makes sense. Why should he be so quick to kill her? She has clearly suffered herself.
It seems like Su-Won wasn't thinking straight and realized later that he isn't just his father's son, but also his mother's, because now, he lightens her fate to imprisonment. Yes, imprisonment. Letting this woman go is obviously not the right idea either, especially after they acted so hostile to her, no guarantee that she still wants to negotiate.
The big mistake though, is that everyone from Kouka, even Yona, underestimated Mei. None of them know that she could easily break out of jail if she wished. Even while in pain from the Crimson illness, she’s able to wound (possibly kill!) these soldiers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
....Except our favorite MC Hak, doing 6000+ sit-ups like it’s nothing, is about to know!!!!!!
I think Hak will the one to learn this first, and I actually think they could form some alliance based on being ex-generals. This girl will fill Hak in on wtf the Crimson illness is, and we might finally see Hak’s reaction -- OH SHIT, Su-Won actually hates something??? Maybe Haks beloved Princess is more involved with that than he’d like.
I don't think they will go a love triangle of Hak-Mei-Yona route, at least I really hope not, because Hak is loyal af and that does not need to change one bit. At most it'd be funny to see Yona get slightly jealous but honestly I'm not sure if that's necessary either.
Anyway! I would have preferred Mei-nyan stayed an antagonist rather than yet another talk-no-jutsu ally of Yona’s. But okay. We’ll see where this goes, along with the reasons Hiryuu even came down to Earth to start with.
(On a side note, Zeno was great this chapter, wasn’t he? I missed hearing his words of wisdom)
------------
I was momentarily stunned. Why would anyone punch Jaeha in the face? Was it Hak? Did Hak have a reason to keep Jaeha out of this?
Ik-soo looked over at me with a struggle but also a doubt about where I had disappeared to and said, “Sorry, Yoon, I was trying to tell him you need your rest and he should take him to the hospital instead…”
“Where is he?” I asked Kija, ready to get to work. We left Ik-soo behind and took the elevator up to the fifth floor, and because Kija had left the door unlocked, we wasted no time in getting in. His room was full of white furniture so basic that it seemed no one had ever taught him the meaning of decorating, so Jaeha’s sprawling form on his bed stuck out like a cactus in a barren dessert. His left cheek was swollen, and he was moaning and holding his stomach as he rolled this way and that. His eyes were glazed and unfocused, and he didn’t seem to notice when we came in.
I didn’t know where to start, and looked to Kija for answers.
He gulped and stared at the man on his bed. “I had a bad feeling about him and found him in the stairwell,” he said as I got to work assessing Jaeha’s vitals and helping myself to Kija’s miniature fridge to find something cold to put against his cheek. Kija went on, “His room was locked, so I carried him back up here.”
“You carried him?”
“Yes,” he said, changing tones as he caught me staring at him. “He said he heard something in the stairs and went to check it out, so that’s where I found him around the 4th floor. I went down the staircase first, but then when I couldn’t get in, I went back up here, and then back down to get your help.”
“You carried him by yourself, up the stairs?”
“Yes. Is that strange? Oh, I suppose it is, I should have used the elevator.”
“This isn’t making any sense, Kija. Back up and slow down.”
Jaeha howled with pain and clenched his stomach tighter. Kija took a breath and started over. “He came up here a couple hours ago to tell me about everything with Hak and Taejun. We talked for maybe an hour or so. He’s a pretty nice guy once you get to know him. Then when he said he was going back to his room, he said said he heard something and he wanted to check it out. He was already acting strange before that, though.”
“How so?”
He frowned as he pondered. “He was acting very loose and friendly with me.”
“Can you be any more specific?”
“Leaning against the wall like he couldn’t stand up straight, keeping his face very close to me. Touching my hair. Then he started shaking his head and moving away and laughing, and muttering something under his breath like his was confused, and then some sound caught his attention so he stopped, and then told me to go to bed while he looked for clues. I went back to my room, but for some reason, it bothered me.
“I’ll say.”
“Then I think I heard a loud noise, and that was when I ran down to check.”
“Did you see anyone else there?”
“No.”
I lowered my voice. “Have you seen Hak at all?”
“No, not since yesterday.”
Jaeha grimaced and sweat poured down his face. “It wasn’t Hak,” he squeezed out.
“Hey, you’re alive. Who was it, then?”
“Some… big guy…”
“Big guy?”
“…Nice ‘n… scruffy… like a pira---bleeghh!”
Kija and I scrambled to get Jaeha to the bathroom over the toilet. As he bowed before the porcelain throne, I looked back to Kija. “Were you guys drinking up here or something?”
“No, we only had some snacks.”
“A punch in the face shouldn’t do this. If it wasn’t alcohol, then my best guess is poison.”
“Poison!? He’s been poisoned!?”
I didn’t give myself half a second to think about it, but it sounded plausible—after all, we were already trying to track down an attempted murderer, why wouldn’t they try some other methods if someone was on their trail? “They tried to silence him!?”
“But… but who would have had poison? P… poison comes from plants, right?”
“Yuno! Oh, gods, but why would Yuno poison him?”
“Yuno? She’s the woman across from Yona on the fourth floor, right?”
Jaeha mumbled and stirred, his eyes were unfocused and his head was unsteady. “That’s right, her name’s Yuno… I think…”
Kija and I drew closer. “You think…?”
“I think I…”
“You what?”
He squinted, staring out at the distance. “I think I was flirting with her boyfriend.”
“…wait. You mean Geun-tae?”
“Uh-hhmmnn.”
“Jaeha! How lewd! No wonder she poisoned you!”
“No! No, wait, wait, stop!” I shouted. “Yuno wouldn’t do that. Geun-tae probably punched you thinking you’re the pervert who had been bothering her.”
“Wha...?”
“Jaeha!” gasped Kija. “You’re a pervert?”
“Actually, now that I think about it, you probably are. Her room is right above yours, so she probably overheard those porn DVDs.”
“Pornography!?”
“Hey!” snapped Jaeha. “Those are works of art! And I only bring over consenting, conscious adults—bleeeggghhh—”
“For crying out loud,” I slapped a hand against my forehead. “He obviously didn’t consent. Why were you flirting with him in the first place? Was this really an appropriate time?”
“I don’t know,” he whimpered into the toilet. “I don’t even know. He’s not even my type! Ohhhh, just let me diiiiiie.”
“Don’t die in my bathroom!”
Jaeha yelled again in pain as he clenched his stomach, and I opened my mouth to tell him he’d be fine when--
“Who’s dying?”
“Ahh!” Kija and I both jumped. Hak was standing in the bathroom doorway, looming over us with his arms folded and a scowl across his face. Kija stood right up to face him with a claw-like fingernail against his chest. “Hak! What are you doing wandering into my room?”
“You’re the one who left the door open and started making all that racket. What’s going on here?”
“I’m die… dying…”
Hak gave Jaeha a calculating glance, then glared back at Kija. “What did you feed him?”
“Feed him? You think I’m the one who would poison him?”
“Yes!” he barked back. “What did you bring back from your grandmother this time?”
“This time?” I looked between the two of them. “Kija, what snacks did you and Jaeha have?”
“White Dragon Cookies, from my granny.”
Hak marched into the kitchenette and came back with a white box laden with tissue paper. “Are these them?”
“Yes. But don’t do anything to them, I haven’t had one yet.”
“That’s why you’re not the one with your head in a toilet!”
“Let me see those,” I stood up, then took a whiff of one of the thumb-sized sweets. For cookies, they were very shiny. The noxious smell immediately made me light-headed and recoil from the box. “Ungh! Ahgh! What is in those?”
“Granny only said they were baked with love.”
“Ahhhhh!!” Jaeha screamed, his eyes wide and fang-like teeth gleaming. “They were an aphrodisiac! No wonder! Uunghh!”
“Whatever they were, they’re rancid now. No wonder Jaeha got sick. Why did you even put those in your mouth?”
Kija fumed. “Don’t insult my granny’s cooking!”
“Insult them?” Hak’s eyes flared. “Whatever you brought home last week was even worse. What was that candy supposed to be?”
“Candy?” I darted my glance back to Kija, who was starting to shrink away under everyone’s stares.
“It was… last week I was felt like I was going to catch a cold, so she gave me cough drops.”
“Cough drops are medicine, Kija! Hak,” I looked back at him. “Did you eat one?”
“Yes. I left it on my counter and then noticed it again on Tuesday, so I popped it in my mouth and didn’t think anything of it. It started kicking in a couple hours later,” he trailed off, cheeks blushing as he called to mind the events of that day.
Kija’s face went as white as his sheets. “Oh… Oh, Hak, I’m sorry.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Those have a very short shelf-life. I should have told you to eat it right away that night, on Saturday.”
Hak looked wild-eyed at Kija. “You knew they’d do that?”
“I-I don’t know what it did to you, but knowing how a few of my cousins reacted to them while we were growing up, I…”
“Kija!” I yelled. “What is your grandmother, some kind of drug distributor?”
“No, she’s a chemist.”
“Damn it, Kija! It’s your fault I’m getting treated like I’m a criminal!”
“But you are!” he clenched his hands into fists and shouted back. “We all know what you did to Kan Taejun!”
“Kija—”
Hak was silent. I started to shake as I looked between them. If Hak wanted to, he could very easily put a hole through any of our faces. Even Jaeha was looking more nervous than pained as he stared up, waiting for someone to speak again. Hak blinked, then said, “You mean that I punched him?”
“Aha!” Kija shouted. “You admit it! You’re the one who beat him up in the alley last night!”
“Kija, stop—”
“I won’t stand for getting accused of something I didn’t do,” Hak glared back. “I haven’t even seen him since I hit him on Tuesday.”
“Wait!” I shouted, putting my hands up between them. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Now let’s all sit down and sort this out calmly, please.”
**********
We relocated back to Kija’s bed. Kija and Hak dragged Jaeha back over and I helped to make him more comfortable. He seemed like he was in a little less pain than before, but his face was still green with misery. I asked if he was going to be sick again and said, “Yoon, you stink.”
“Sorry. I haven’t had a chance to shower yet.”
“Kind of like… the stairs…” he trailed off and closed his eyes.
Hak paid close attention and Kija stayed respectfully quiet as I explained Taejun’s injury, Soo-won’s approach to the situation, Joon-gi’s recollection of the details, as well as Jaeha’s recollection that Yona and Taejun had been arguing.
Kija’s fist tightened. “He’s such a slimy jerk. I hate to say it, but he had it coming.”
“Punching him felt good, I’ll admit.”
“Let’s start there,” I suggested. “Hak, you ate the cough drop from Kija on Tuesday morning, correct?”
“A little before lunch, yeah.”
“And then it started making you antsy a couple hours later, so you went for a run, right?”
“Yes.”
“Kija, was this also the day you came home to find Taejun bothering Yona in the elevator, right?”
“Yes. It was around 4:15. I yelled at him and he was spooked and ran out the front door. I offered to help Yona more, but she said she didn’t need me because she has Hak.”
He perked up. “She said that?”
“Yes.”
“Oh.”
“And Hak, around what time did you punch Taejun?”
“Probably around 4:15.”
“And neither of you have seen him since?”
“No.”
“I haven’t, but how can we believe you, Hak? Yoon talked to Soo-won, and he said you two have conflicting alibis!”
Hak raised an eyebrow to me. “Come again?”
“When I asked where you were yesterday evening, you said you were working out. Soo-won didn’t know how you answered and said you were in his room.”
“And you were in a rush to shower when you got back last night—very suspicious!”
Hak looked befuddled for a moment, but then he hit his fist in his palm. “Ah! I see what you mean. I was in Soo-won’s room. He got a treadmill and weight set and invited me to go try them out with him. I was all sweaty after using the treadmill.”
“Oh, really?” blinked Kija. “I knew his apartment was bigger. It really fits that much?”
“Yeah. I didn’t think it would, but it’s a nice set-up.”
“Oh. Maybe he’ll let me try it out sometime too.”
“How about Yona?” I asked. “Did either of you talk to Yona since the incident with Taejun on Tuesday?”
Hak frowned. “I talked to her later that night, but I was still feeling weird. I…” he averted his eyes and turned red, “I was getting in her business too much. At one point I pinned her against the wall.”
“You what!?”
“Down, Kija! Was that it, Hak?”
“Yeah. That was when I knew something was wrong with me, and I went to sleep early after that.”
“Have you seen her since then?”
“I tried to apologize to her on Thursday. She didn’t want to hear it.”
“Was that all?”
He frowned and continued in a lower voice. “I tried to find out who she’s been hanging out with lately. She doesn’t want to say who.”
“That’s none of your business anyway,” Kija scoffed.
“I was worried about her safety! Anyway, we argued again, so I haven’t seen her since.”
“I haven’t run into her either.”
“And what about the pervert?” Hak pointed to Jaeha.
“I’m pretty sure he hasn’t talked to her or to Taejun,” I said. “But I talked with her in her apartment this morning.”
Hak sharpened his glance at me. “And?”
“They did have some kind of argument. Yona didn’t want to talk about it,” I said, feeling my words get quieter as I tumbled toward what was sounding closer and closer to the truth. “But a homeless person who witnessed it happen in the alley did.” I pulled out the shard in my pocket to show them and finished, “He said this was what hit Taejun. It came from the fourth story window.”
Kija simply stared, but Hak pursed his lips and fell into his own thoughts. I gulped and waited for his response.
“We should go down and talk to Yona.”
“I agree.” “What? Right now?” Kija looked between us. “It’s so late! I don’t get it. Why?”
“You stay here with Jaeha. We’ll take care of this.”
