The World, My Childhood And My Hero Academia: Vigilantes
Hello friends!
Its Dr. Shojo coming at you with a post that will be divided into three parts!
Part One: The world as we know it!
The world has changed a lot since we last connected. For starters, TOILET BOUND HANAKO KUN HAS NOT ONLY A PHYSICAL RELEASE BUT A GORGEOUS ANIME! And not only that, but MY NEXT LIFE AS A VILLAINESS: ALL ROUTES LEAD TO DOOM! IS GETTING AN ANIME AS WELL! The last time I wrote about Katerina there wasn’t even an official English translation of that long-ass light-novel-title. And now?
A WHOLE ANIME. A BISEXUAL HAREM AWAITS! I am JAZZED!
Do you think it’s my fault? No matter, I’ll take all the credit. All the manga I talk about are getting anime adaptations. I’LL DO MY DUTY AND TALK ABOUT SOME MORE!
But first. Let us address the Covid-19 shaped elephant in the room
I deeply regret that it took a whole-ass pandemic to get me back to writing. In my defense, I bought an iPad and started drawing like 900 kokichi oumas. I was really busy with that. And then I started reading fanfiction. Then that got me thinking about how fanfiction such an interesting look into how people interpret fandom, use it for wish fulfillment and escapism, and good god is everyone OK cause that bulimia fan fic was super detailed....and I am officially on a tangent. Off track. Ahem.
We are all staying inside a whole lot more which means y’all probably need some reading material and Dr. Shojo has your back! Go read “Horimiya”! It’s amazing! Ahhhh, my work here is done! I'm serious, if you’re here for a Shojo rec, that’s it! There's also like 8 million more Otome Isekais to check out now. It’s like they’re multiplying like rabbits..............
As a Doctor, I must advise you to stay inside and read some manga and practice social distancing. Embrace your inner hikikomori.
Allright? All good? Okay now one final disclaimer:
This post is going to be talking about something a little different than usual and I want to start by giving you some context about who Dr. Shojo is in real life.
Part Two: Dr. Shojo Exposed
You see, when I was little I was obsessed with Japanese media. This doesn't surprise you at all I can tell. Probably because I walk around calling myself Dr. Shojo and shout about manga that you should read.
Anyways, the reason why I was obsessed wasn’t because of the big eyes or the spikey hair or the interesting new culture. It was because it tended to have more character development and overarching plotlines than the media I was used to in Canada. Dexter’s Lab, Magic School Bus, pretty much everything I saw on TV was episodic in nature, so imagine how much my mind was blown when I saw Naruto and Card Captor Sakura, heck, even Pokémon had the Indigo Plateau! Here were kids that were learning more and more each day and got to see enemies become friends and vice versa. They lived and grew older just like me. Except they were cooler than me. And had more interesting lives than me. I gotta tell you, I was so sad when I was 12 and Kero didn’t tell me I had latent magical powers. But there was magic in my life and it was the magic of a complex narrative story. And not only that, it had a sense of movement and had cool costumes. I was hooked immediately.
Also, fun fact, at that age I happened to be a complete and utter tomboy! I loved pretending to fight my friends in the playground and was really worried that puberty would ruin my life because being a girl sounded so CUMBERSOME.
Which leads me up to my confession. Before I became Dr. Shojo, I was in fact......Dr. Shonen.
Bleach? Naruto? One Piece? I've read every single chapter there is.
Hundreds of hours of watching fight sequences. Another fun fact, I only got into shojo because my aunt bought me volume 7 and 8 of Fruits Basket thinking “all mangas like the same right? Kids love comics?” It’s a tribute to how episodic western media was back then that she thought buying volume SEVEN and EIGHT was a REASONABLE PLACE TO START READING.
Now you might also say, Hey! Dr Shojo! Cardcaptors was a shojo! And you are right! but back then the anime was marketed to boys over here in the west and they actualy like, edited out episodes that they thought wouldn't interest boys?! Second fun fact, Once when I was in Grade 3 I was told I was not allowed to join a club under the stairs cause I was a girl and it was BOYS ONLY. The point of the club? To talk about how great Cardcaptors was! I Kid you not!
So anyways, your pall Dr. Shojo loves Shonen manga to this day!
The only reason I made this Dr. Shojo blog specifically about shojo is because, being a tomboy with no female friends, reading shojo manga was the first time I really thought about what it meant to be a girl and fall in love. And y i k e s. Shojo manga, like most media, fails miserably most of the time in displaying real world relationships. Or at least, it  doesn't prepare you for how disappointing everything can be. When I had my first kiss, I was thinking about how it didn’t feel at all like how I felt reading Zen and Shirayukis kiss in Akagame No Shirayuki Hime. Those were formative years, and shojo was one of the only places I saw romance being talked about for younger audiences. I liked reading romances where no one had any sexual experiences and were figuring out what love meant to them. But let’s shelve this topic for now.
The point is that gender roles are dumb and if you have an open mind there's a world of stories out there for you. Take this time inside to read something you wouldn’t normally. Critically think about the ways that the worlds you see in stories and how you experience the world differ. What are the messages a story is trying to tell you? And why do you like the stories you do? Reflect on how the stories you tell yourself color your view of the world. Even mindless entertainment leaves an impression on us. Anyways.
Whilst you're doing that, I'm going to absolutely lose my hecking mind over the Shonen Jump series MY HERO ACADEMIA: Vigilantes!
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
Part Three: I downloaded the one month free trial of the Shonen Jump app and made you read all that, so I can tell you that today Dr. Shojo is going to rant about a spin-off of a shonen manga
THAT’S RIGHT, OF COURSE I READ HERO ACA AND YES I DID PICK UP THE SPIN OFF SERIES. SHONEN JUMP LETS YOU READ ALL THE NEW CHAPTERS FOR FREE ON THEIR APP. KIDS, IF YOU LIKE SHONEN AND YOU’RE PIRATING ON A SCANLATION SITE STILL GET OUT BECAUSE YOU DON’T NEED TO SEE THOSE WEIRD PLASTIC SURGERY AND DENTISTRY ADDS ANY MORE.
SHONEN IS HERE AND ITS LEGAL AND ITS FREE FOR YOU. GET OFF MANGA FOX OR MANGA ROCK OR WHATEVER THE KIDS ARE USING THESE DAYS.
OK, so by this point in the article you have learned two very important things about me: 1) I love Shonen manga and 2) I read a lot of fanfiction.
Specifically, I read an absolutely biblical amount of My Hero Academia fan fiction and let me tell you, A solid chunk of it is vigilante/ Deadpool / criminal with a heart of gold themed.
So when I saw Hero Aca had a spin off, and it was about vigilantes, I was NOT SURPRISED IN THE SLIGHTEST. Ao3 sure is powerful.
Now, if you will permit me a tangent in a post full of tangents—HOLY CRAP, THERE ARE TOO MANY VIGILANTE AUS. I CAN'T KEEP TRACK OF EM. IT’S THE ISEKAI PROBLEM ALL OVER AGAIN. I GET AN EMAIL A FIC HAS UPDATED AND I’M LIKE IS THIS THE FIC WHERE DEKU HAS AN ABUSIVE MOM OR THE ONE WHERE HE HAS SPLIT PERSONALITY DISORDER OR THE ONE WHERE HE’S VIGILANTES WITH HITOSHI. OH WAIT, nvm, it’s the one where deku has a healing quirk.
OH WAIT WHICH OF THE 6 DEKU WITH HEALING QUIRK VIGILATE AU FICS IS THIS ONE?! ARGH WHY DIDN’T I WRITE A DESCRIPTION IN THE BOOKMARK FOR THIS!
My gripes aside, there's a reason why there's such an abundance of vigilante story telling—
Deadpool made like an absolute buttload of money and people love sass and memes.
People have a desire for a story in which they see themselves. Or, how they think of themselves. They like a story about someone who maybe came from nothing. Someone who has less money, maybe someone who is unlucky and had some bad breaks. Someone who never learned they had magic, never got their Hogwarts letter, never saw Kero, someone who never got that God-level quirk from All Might. And if your on Ao3 They want someone who also has seen a lot of memes and kind of wants taco bell and is also questioning their sexuality a bit?
Enter our new hero VIGILANTE DEKU.
But the cannon can't do this, cause hey, Deku is the chosen one. Albeit, chosen by All Might, He’s got his own thing to do. But how can we still cash in on a vigilante story?
And thus enter our New-New hero KOICHI HAIMAWARI—code name Nice Guy and then later The Crawler. True to his relatable roots. He’s just a dude in an hoodie who can go about as fast as a bike.
Tumblr media
First off, I love Koichi. He wants to be a hero and fight crime, but most of the time he has to run away because at the end of the day he's just a dude.
He’s cute but not wildly good-looking, A bit of a nerd but not like an extreme okaku. He’s got a part time job and hates violence.
And this is where Koichi really shines—in every day stuff. He helps out wherever he can. Often, that just means listening to people complain and maybe helping his friends out with whatever they’re going through. He’s the kind of guy who smiles, not because he's especially brave, but because he just takes things one at a time and doesn't sweat the past. I think it’s really telling that he missed getting into hero high-school because he skipped the entrance exam to help someone. He’s the kind of person who lets us experience the superpower of human decency and empathy. And you know what? That’s something the world need desperately.
This theme of human decency is really the driving force of Vigilantes—it’s a manga about how the laws are there for a reason but sometimes they unfairly impact the poor and vulnerable. It's about how a lot of criminals are just people who fell into bad social circles or on bad times. People have the capacity for cruelty and violence but that’s never all they are.
Now, speaking of crime, the entirety of Hero Aca falls into some murky water when it comes to its evil doers. Much of the fandom has a huuuuuge problem with how much the franchise is willing to sweep under the rug in the name of redeeming their baddies. RE: people getting mad about forgiving Endeavor’s child abuse, or Bakugo’s suicide baiting. Or Mineta’s blatant sexual harassment.
But this theme is in Vigilantes even more than it ever was in the main series. To start off with, there’s this guy who tries to rape Pop Step early on, and the later he later winds up befriending everybody. It becomes a running gag that each new villain winds up befriending the other villain guys and then they all open a cat café together.
Using jobs as a way to lift people out of lives of crime is great and all but in the story there is no nuance or consequences for past wrong and well.....it feels very weird.  It's like Vigilantes plays at having an opinion about moral ambiguity and the complexity of human existence and then just.......lets everyone get along because who has time to get into all that. Make of that what you will but it sits weird for me personally.
Anyway, let's move on and talk about POP STEP our main girl!
Tumblr media
I love pop stars and I love vigilantes and a guerrilla performer is defiantly a character I could get behind. And I think they do a good job with Pop. She is actually kind of shy, but has this secret edgy persona she puts on when she performs. She is every girl on tumbler in the early 2000s. I also looooove that they make her not that great a singer. SHE’S GOT PASSION AND CHARISMA and maybe not born talent but like why should that stop you! Talent can be earned through practice and this is a great lesson to show people.
Unfortunately, Pop is also a great example of everything wrong with romance in Shonen.
It’s established early on that Pop loves Koichi because she is the girl he rescued all those years ago and yada yada yikes we’ve heard this one before. Many times before.
Sure, it's fine that they’ve met before, but gosh am I sick of damsels in distress. It's like she can't love him just because she respects what a great guy he is in her life and in the community at large, no no, she just needs to be rescued on top of that. And LOLOLOL isn't it funny he never noticed she was a girl because she was a child with short hair?! Once he realizes she has boobs now they will for sure fall in love! That’s how love works!
She's just with him all the time—nothing romantic ever happens she just gets a little tsundere.
I am never ever going to believe Koichi likes Pop because he spends like sooooo much time with her and they never have like, a moment. The first time he considers her is when Makoto is like, ‘hey I would love to get together with you, but have you thought about if you are crushing on Pop’. (Also this entire plot point is suspect—she's arbitrarily falling for Koichi cause he.......is the protagonist?)
Say what you will about shojo, they give you the emotional conversations, the moments where you think.....ahhh I can see why she is falling for him. They give you context! Shonen likes to just say HERE’S A GIRL YOUR AGE. YOU CAN DATE LATER WHEN THE ADVENTURE IS DONE.
Just when they might get together, Pop suddenly turns evilllllll. The evilllll beeeees made her eeeevilllll (and more sexy).
*Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
Because why on earth would they get together if Koichi didn’t get to rescue Pop one more time?
I’m tired. These troupes are tired. I’m sure you are too. HOWEVER! If your still with me, Let’s move into why I'm really writing this post. Let’s get to the part that got me screaming to my friends, who by the way, don’t even care bout Hero Aca….but listened anyways. May you all find nakama like these my friends.
Anyways,
HOLY FUCK ERASERHEAD’S ENTIRE BACK STORY IS IN THIS AROUND CHAPTER 60 AND IT IS WONDERFUL AND ABSOLUTLY HEARTBREAKING AND IS ONE OF THE BEST CHARACTER BACKSTORIES I HAVE EVER SEEN AND IS THE REASON WHY THIS SERIES IS A MUST-READ FOR MAIN SERIES FANS.
AND BY ALMIGHT.
WHY. IS. IT HERE.
I present to you my late night text messages to my friends
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ALSO, AIZAWAS TEACHER IS PRINCE?!?!?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AHEM, so as you can see, I kinda lost my shit.
And now, I would like to formally defend my claim that DESPITE HOW AMAZING IT WAS, ERASERHEAD’S BACKSTORY HAD NO BUISSNESS BEING IN THE VIGILANTES SPIN-OFF MANGA.
Eraserhead, aka Aizawa Shouta, is a side character who is working with the police on some crime stuff. He is not a main cast member in this spin off. He’s a guest character that fans of the main series will be like OH COOL. GRUMPY CAT MAN LIKES CATS ON HIS OFF HOURS TOO. LOVE THAT FOR HIM.
So, my imagine my absolute surprise when Aizawa runs into Koichi and the following happens:
It starts to rain, so, like in any good manga, this means some great FORCED BONDING TIME
Except no. It doesn't because rather than start talking, Aizawa JUST STARTS REMEMBERING—ABSOLUTLY SILENTLY TO HIS OWN PRIVETE SELF—HIS ENTIRE TRAGIC BACKSTORY.
AND THIS GOES ON FOR CHAPTERS.
THIS GOES ON LONGER THEN ARC ONE IT FEELS LIKE.
I LOVE IT, BUT KOICHI IS ABOUT TO JOIN ATSUSHI NAKAJIMA IN THE DUBIOUS CATEGORY OF “PROTAGONISTS THE SERIES FORGOT ABOUT IN LIEU OF COOLER SIDE CHARACTERS”.
AND LO IT HAS NO BEARING ON THE REST OF THE PLOT, CHARACTERS, OR STORY
What the ever-loving-just WHY?
WHY?
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?
SURE, IT’S A COOL TIE-IN.
YES, OF COURSE I LOVED IT. I SHIP ERASER MIC, I DREW THIS FOR HECK’S SAKE:
Tumblr media
AND YET I AM ANGRY.
I AM ANGRY BECAUSE MY FRIDAY WAS RUINED BECAUSE VIGILATES SUCKER PUNCHED ME WITH AN AMAZING STORY THAT REALLY WASN’T PLOT RELEVANT AND PROBABLY SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN THERE.
IS THIS WHY THEY TOOK LIKE NEXT-TO-NO CARE WITH POPS ARC?!?
I mean its ongoing, so it’s too early to say but—
In conclusion—
Excuse me one more,
AIZAWA WAS TAUGHT BY PRINCE!?!??!?!?!?!? PURPLE RAIN PRINCE!?!??!?!?!? WHAT!??!?!?!
It’s so ABSURD that I HAD TO WRITE SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I HAD TO WRITE PARAGRAPHS TO JUSTIFY YELLING ABOUT THIS ONE THING. WHAT THE ABSOLUTE—
Ahem,
Anyways, I hope you liked this weird rant/personal-story/random-diatribe in three parts.
If you’re reading this, thank you, stay safe, and I’ll be back with more shojo manga next time.
Ciao!
Dr. Shojo
(aka Dr. Shonen)

OC #5 - Giorgio Marcello
Okay! Here’s another OC profile. Admittedly I’ve been dreading this one because to be honest Giorgio is probably my worst/one of my worst OCs morally and I gained like a dozen followers this week LOL, but I guess this is the chance for y’all to really see how stupid some of these characters are. *thinking* Anyway, he’s much more of a villain character, and he’s probably the only character of mine where I really felt the need to throw a big “I don’t condone his actions” stamp on him, because while I obviously don’t write any of my characters to be morally commendable I think Giorgio is good at being especially deplorable. He’s very fun though. I think absolutely irredeemably bad characters who are still stylish and obnoxious are really fun to work with ;D
Giorgio is the older half brother of Giovanni and Vittoria. He’s in his early forties and… bi. While Giovanni and Vittoria are the product of their father’s second marriage, Giorgio is a product of the first. He has an elder full blood brother, Antonio, and a twin brother, Matteo. All three of them were really spoiled as kids, their parents Vittorio and Maria loved them dearly and even after Maria died Vittorio remained very fond of them. However, because it was only fair, Antonio was destined to inherit the majority of the Marcello Candy Company as the oldest child, but Giorgio and Matteo were still loved and extremely spoiled and encouraged to become powerful, high-ranking members of the Fresno Megalopolis. So Giorgio grew up in a strange spot, where he was not necessarily his father’s favorite, but he was still spoiled and loved dearly, but he always felt that hint of inferiority and desperation to prove himself and get on top. As adults, Matteo would end up becoming a high ranking officer and eventual a captain of the Street Patrol, the Fresno police force, and Giorgio would go to medical school to become a successful celebrity plastic surgeon at Himmel Medicine.
Giorgio is interested in glamour and beauty and pushing the limits of the human body to achieve perfection. He doesn’t really care if anybody lives or dies as long as it moves forward his research. He frequently undergoes surgeries of his own, sometimes even operating on himself directly for fun, constantly changing his look entirely. He looks like the product of countless, extensive plastic surgeries, and he’s always adding to the changes and modifying his looks in new and exciting ways. On a physical level alone he’s very inspired by people like Pete Burns. In the public eye he’s very charming. Many people adore him, considering him a pioneer of the medical world and a crucial figure of Fresno, although many people (including his younger half sister, Sofia, an avid activist against the treatment of her family to the rest of the city) are also very vocally against his inhumane experiments and lack of consideration for any life but his own… But with the power he has between both Himmel Medicine and the Marcello Candy Company backing him up, he tends to manage to get away with almost anything.
Matteo and Giorgio are extremely close...  maybe too close, if you know what I mean, but nothing has necessarily been proven to the public about the extent of their relationship. Either way, through his connections at Himmel, Giorgio has been able to actively “partner” with the Street Patrol and specifically his brother many times. In fact, Giorgio was a huge advocate for Himmel buying out the Street Patrol force and the prison complex, so that Himmel would be able to arrest criminals and drag them straight to the operating room. And, if crime rates have been low and Giorgio is restless, bored, or feeling inspired, he can convince Matteo to go out and find someone who won’t be missed and arrest them for whatever he can possibly charge them on, no matter how much of a stretch it is, giving Giorgio a new plaything.
He’s pioneered a number of experimental surgeries, and what he finds the most fascinating is experimenting with living creatures on a genetic level, tampering with their DNA and genetic structure and modifying their very cells. One of his first “successful” projects was creating a genetically enhanced super-K9 for the Street Patrol, as a gift to his brother. Although it took the “sacrifice” of countless litters of puppies, he eventually was able to bioengineer a german shepherd beast at least triple the size of a regular shepherd and significantly more vicious. A typical Street Patrol K-9 can’t be near anything except the Patrol officer assigned to it, or it’ll do everything in its power to maul it to death. These are terrible and aggressive animals that should never have been born. They tend to look kind of awful and rotting, because the experiment still wasn’t completely perfect upon releasing the first batch, and the dogs’ flesh couldn’t fully grow and stretch around the size of the enhanced canines, making it look like it’s covered in exposed muscle and horribly stretched skin. It’s a really terrible animal that’s killed plenty of poor people, and, since animals are easier to get ahold of for testing than people, Giorgio continues to work with dogs, trying to perfect his K-9 creation, further the designer pet market, as well as using them as early test subjects for eventual human experiments as well.
Once Giorgio had moved up from dogs he began experimenting with splicing and modifying genetics in humans. One of his early experiments for such a thing was the Icarus Project, which involved sewing non-human, artificial body parts to humans as a form of extreme cosmetic surgery. Angel Steel was the primary subject of Giorgio’s major experiment within the Icarus Project, which involved grafting huge, artificial angel wings into Angel’s muscles and flesh and nervous system. Thenceforth, as Angel was trapped within Himmel’s control, Giorgio and Angel had an extensive relationship together. Giorgio was endlessly amused by Angel and saw him as something of a muse. He saw him as a living doll and would endlessly experiment with him and toy with him, careful for one of the first times in his life not to kill his subject. Giorgio frequently bribed and drugged Angel with the heavily addictive candies he received in bulk from his father’s company. For Giorgio, this was perhaps the closest he had ever come to feeling like he truly “loved” someone. He awkwardly would attempt to keep Angel chained to him emotionally in whatever way possible, such as genetically engineering puppies and insisting that he and Angel were to raise them together. He never really cared at all about Angel’s actual well being though, and what he didn’t realize was that over the course of this relationship Angel was successfully gathering bits and pieces of information that would eventually lead to his escape. A heartbroken Giorgio would put a bounty on his head and label him a dangerous terrorist to the public, stating that he would reward whoever brought him Angel’s body, alive or dead, with a hefty reward.
...Which brings me to another one of Giorgio’s experiments, Leatherette, who is one of the bounty hunters that Giorgio sends out after Angel. Leatherette is going to get his own post as well (I might do him next, actually), but to keep things short, he was once a member of the Street Patrol and a close friend to Matteo, and after attempting to defect, was arrested and brought directly by Matteo to Giorgio, telling him to do whatever he wished to him. Giorgio used Leatherette as a guinea pig for the next step of the Icarus Project, moving beyond grafting external things to the body and now beginning to tamper with humans on a genetic level, specifically by attempting to insert animal DNA into a living being. Afraid that adding too much would kill his subject, he spliced only a small amount of bull DNA with Leatherette’s preexisting DNA, creating a sort of minotaur bull-man monster out of him, and partnering with Himmel’s neurology department to brainwash him into a sort of soldier for Himmel… More on all of that later.
Giorgio’s experiments moved forward from there to creating 200%ers, people spliced with an entire living creature - Think of The Fly. When Brundle and the fly go through the machine together, they come out a single thing. 100% human and 100% fly. This, with some more control, is what Giorgio expands his operations to. Thus, the living being to come out the other end would be 200% alive. One of the first people to undergo this operation is Cosmo Halloway, Vittoria’s boyfriend. I’m going to talk about him soon too, but basically, he splices himself with a snake and becomes half snake.
Currently, one of Giorgio’s main concerns is that he cannot genetically modify unborn humans without killing the fetus. He can modify dogs but genetically modified human fetuses are consistently stillborn. This is a problem alongside his other main focus, which is removing the sterility that happens whenever a 200%er is created, since, similar to the way a donkey and a horse mating results in sterile offspring, a human splicing their DNA with another creature leaves them sterile. It’s a work in progress, and he doesn’t really care how many people have to die and how many infants are born stillborn to get his desired results.
Giorgio finds something very erotic in the surgery process and the intimacy of the “penetration” once someone is cut open. He sleeps with patients often, entirely regardless of gender, and even outside of the operating room he enjoys things like knifeplay. He doesn’t really see other people as people at all, but as “canvasses” for his art, which are his experiments. He doesn’t really have any moral decency whatsoever and is happy to exert his power to get his way in any scenario. He’s a very vocal advocate for far right late capitalism where the local megacorps that run the world - Himmel, in particular, of course - get a limitless amount of power. He’s entirely depraved and debauched. And the thing is, because he’s so successful, he’s just allowed to keep doing what he does. No one has stopped him yet, and he’s still a hugely prolific figure in Fresno. He’s good at putting on a smile when he’s in the public eye and insisting that what he does is for the common good. He has a lot in common with Giovanni in the sense that he’s very flamboyant and adores glamour, but unlike GIovanni, who lives with quite a bit of guilt and self-hate to the point that he finds it in himself to self-reflect at times and regret his actions or be aware of other people’s existence, Giorgio never has those moments… except, perhaps briefly, when Angel Steel ran away. But by then it was far too late (to fix what he had done or learn from it).
Giovanni and Vittoria want nothing to do with Giorgio. Although he didn’t outright beat Giovanni as Antonio did, he was always full of snide remarks and cruel comments towards both Giovanni and Vittoria. Vittoria eventually ends up forced to interact with him a bit, as her boyfriend is so entangled in Giorgio’s experiments now, but they’re not on remotely good terms. Giorgio is especially close to Matteo, of course, and also frequently enjoys the company of Antonio, although even Antonio finds him easy to get annoyed by. He’s really a terrible person.

fmdmeme002, but all at once so i don’t spam y’all
1) what is your goal for this year/next year?
reading the sticky note, sung’s first thought was that he’d like to do many things. but, that wasn’t specific enough for a fan to feel satisfied. releasing more music with element was important to him, but so was having the time and creativity to write more music for others, and spend more time with friends and family. in the end, it only took a glance up at the fan to figure out what he wanted to write. “to meet more fans around the world!!!!”
2) what song would you want to sing to or play for someone you like?
a giggle left his lips when the girl in front of him asked her question. “are you looking to hire me for someone special?” it was natural, to play around with fans like they were his friends. to sung, they were. “i’d play something romantic. maybe one of @fmdxsuji’s songs.”
3) what’s your favorite scent?
sung knew this question had to come from a fan who knew him well. with the amount of candles in his side of the dorm, there were many to choose from. on camera, he tended to name more ‘manly’ scents, but in the space of fans, he was honest. “soft scents,” he wrote, “strawberry lemon ice a lot lately.”
4) if you spent one day with a fan, where would you go and what would you do?
sung’s hand readied to write that they should go to a theme park, but stopped short. there was a chance he might not be feeling very high energy that day, and the fans deserved better of him. he could say the library, too, but that might be too low energy for many fans. he settled with a basic compromise of, “what you like best!!!!”
5) what new concept do you want to try showing fans?
“a cute concept! wouldn’t we be so cute? especially yujinnie.” the fan responded that they thought he’d be cute too, which, he laughed and thanked them for. he hoped as much, anyway.
6) which girl group do you like the most recently?
he glanced up through his eyelashes with a smile. “this won’t be any surprise to you,” he said, and looked back down. “wish!!!” and on either side of the word he drew ‘hang loose’ symbol hands to symbolize the key point dance from signal. if he had more time, he might have taken a picture to send to @fmdluna.
7) which boy group do you like the most recently?
with ride on the wind’s promotions, sung held onto his songs of the summer for longer than he might have normally. though he knew he wasn’t going to stray away from his usual answers, picking which one was difficult. so, he had to go with which song was on his mind the most. “nine critical beauties!!! ㅋㅋ”
8) what soloist do you like the most recently?
it was inevitable that he’d receive a question like this during his solo debut. though they might expect a playful narcissistic answer, sung felt too grateful to the people that supported him and showed up for him to do anything less than sincere. “my friend @fmdjoohwan!!!” as he handed back the album and note, he said, “isn’t he so sexy these days?” to which the fan agreed.
9) what song have you been listening to a lot that you would recommend to fans?
“knight @fmdtaeyong‘s help,” he wrote, with a slight hesitation. the fans were still only getting to know him, and how willing he was to share things he felt was important. and this, was important. the fan read back his message, and asked why, and he took a breath before he said, “it’s okay to admit we all need help sometimes.”
10) what is your most used app?
sung never thought anyone would be interested in something like what app he uses most. if he had the time to pull out his phone and check, he could probably tell them definitively, but as it was, he had to make his best guess. “kkt, i think...” he paused to think, and continued, “or twitter!”
11) what should someone do to win your heart?
there was no way sung could tell them the truth. his heart would never belong to another person, and he knew that. @fmddaisuke knew that. the world didn’t, and might not ever. the thought was... upsetting, to say the least. but, he didn’t dwell on it, as he flashed a smile, and wrote, “give me lots of love!” and surrounded it with drawings of hearts.
12) what do you want for your next birthday?
he’d learned well enough by now that these questions tended to be sneaky ways to find out what they would next gift him, especially if the person was a fansite. which, this girl was. she was very kind whenever he’d met her, and frankly, he was always happy for any korean who supported them as dearly as she did, but, he wasn’t one to seek material things anymore. he wrote down something he thought might be more helpful, “every aether to be happier than the year before.”
13) what is do you consider to be your most charming feature/trait?
sung didn’t like thinking about his physical self as attractive. the only person he cared to be attractive for was his boyfriend, and even then, he’d rather have his personality shine through his looks. it may have been a simple answer, but he wrote, “kindness,” and slid the album back to the fan. aloud, he told them, “to me, being kind is one of the most admirable traits there is.”
14) what is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
there were so many to choose from. sung never liked sticking to one kind for too long, not when a new wild flavor would be coming out every month. the classics were great, the ones he couldn’t even fathom what they might taste like were great. but, he went for middle of the road, “rocky road!!!,” and drew a mountain underneath for the words to follow.
15) how should i ask out the person i like?
“trust yourself,” he wrote, but didn’t feel like that was adequate. he held up a hand, and the fan took it, interlocking their fingers. “show them how much you care, and be straightforward. and, if they don’t feel the same way, it’s their own loss. you can only accept their affections if it’s as strong as yours.”
16) what’s the secret behind your good looks?
plastic surgery. that wasn’t a good answer. that was, more accurately, a terrible answer. sung thought he looked nice before his procedures, but, not good enough, he guessed. “a healthy skincare regime!”
17) what do you think of fans of the same gender as you?
element seemed to have a greater mix of genders in their fans. like with most idol groups, the majority leaned towards women, but sung particularly liked when men came up. it was... exhilarating. like a shot of adrenaline. this man seemed quite confident in meeting him, which sent a pang to his heart that they were still shy enough to write their question on a sticky note. “the more i meet, the happier sungie is!”
18) what is the most recent thing that made you happy?
right after their official debut, it probably was the most obvious that that would be the happiest moment. nothing else compared, in his eyes. but, most recently? “a delicious breakfast!” he wrote, and drew a small drawing of himself eating from a bowl.
19) what is your happiness level these days on a scale from 0 to 100?
if he really thought about it, it might not be that high. the thought wasn’t a great one to have. he’d just had his solo debut, with an entire mini album, mostly created by himself. but it was hard, different, the things expected of him were different. he made a compromise, writing “90!!!” and drew a little face in the zero.
20) can you give some inspiring words for someone going through a hard time?
whenever sung received this question, he worried that the fan was the one going through a difficult time. with his hand on the fan’s, he could tell them his own truth. “let yourself feel what you feel. and when you have, breathe it back out. let it off of your shoulders, so that you can remember a new day will come.”
21) what words of advice would you give to someone studying for their college exam?
“don’t listen to decipher sunbaenim’s ring ding dong!!!” the joke he wrote down was silly enough. he knew from personal experience how terribly that song could get stuck in someone’s head while studying. but, he added a second note below that, something that mattered more, in his opinion. “and accept that you’re still smart and amazing no matter how you do.”
22) give yourself a percent ranking from 0 to 100 in the following categories: cute, cool, and sexy.
some recess in sung hoped he could be 100 in all of the categories presented to him. if there was one that stuck out above the rest, though, it was cuteness. he wrote down an 80, for that. it was a decent score, not high enough too many people would disagree, hopefully. next was sexy, at 70. as much as he didn’t care for the image, gold star did like to present him as a sexy type, and sung couldn’t deny it. and, coming up in last, was cool, at 40. sung had never considered himself the traditionally cool type, but he was alright with that.
23) what place do you want to travel to the most?
sung didn’t think much about vacations, or anything of that nature. the first thing that came to mind was to travel back home. the second, to japan with @fmddaisuke, to see his family, because he knew how much his boyfriend ached for them. but, in the end, he wrote down, “wherever our aether are!”
24) what language would you like to learn?
language was a tricky subject for sung. he felt like he was pretty good at korean, all things considered. he was well-read, and expanded his vocabulary often enough. when it came to other languages, he had trouble making sentences himself. he’d been told he had great accents, and he could understand someone when they were speaking in english or japanese, for the most part, but responding back... was a gamble. he felt like he was already trying hard enough with english and japanese, so he went for the language he heard often that he didn’t mostly understand, “spanish!!!”
25) what is the first thing you think of when someone mentions your fans?
the relationship sung had with his fans wasn’t as complicated as it seemed it was for many of his friends. sure, there were people that didn’t follow element’s career the way he would, but sung didn’t consider those people to be much of fans. the fans were the ones who supported them fully, from a distance, and enjoyed them for what they were. they were the ones who brought sung joy. “happiness”
26) what is your favorite movie/book you’ve seen/read recently?
in the space of these close fan interactions, sung could be more honest than he might have otherwise. chances were, only interns at the company and aethers would see his response. he read often, watched movies on a regular basis as well, though not as often as he read, so choosing one was difficult. but, the one that had stuck out the most to him recently was, “call me by your name!!”
27) what are your recent wishes?
“element and aether’s happiness”. writing the words down wasn’t a difficult decision. sung knew in his heart those were two of his wishes. he supposed part of him wished for element’s success too. even if he was happy with where they were at, he knew his members weren’t. and they deserved the world.
28) what are the requirements for your ideal type?
it was a common question. part of the fantasy of being an idol meant the expectation that fans would want to date him. but unlike some of his other members, sung enjoyed it. playing along was fun, when the fan knew the limits of their relationship. when it came to sung, there weren’t many restrictions. he wanted to know their fans in as close of a capacity as he could, because he felt like they deserved that. like most other times that question had come up, it was written on a sticky note, that he could playfully hide as he wrote, “to be as sweet as you!” before giving it back, and seeing the happy blush on the fan’s face.
29) what job would you want if you weren’t an idol?
before being in element, sung never considered that question. what he might want was very different from what he might have ended up doing. he knew that if he never made it into debut, he’d have stayed in his family’s business, and likely been miserable. but over the years, he had the opportunity to actually think on that question. most of the time, he threw out one of the many jobs he thought might have been cool, but this time, like many other instances, he went with what felt the most fitting for him, “a teacher,” to which he drew an apple beside it.
30) what is a hobby you’d like to pick up?
the fan was pretty young, for their usual demographic. positively adorable, but also confident enough to ask their question to his face, rather than write it down. his answer came quickly, “cooking!” though he had many hobbies he admired, wanting to become a better cook had been a dream for quite a long time, which he continued to share with the fan. they expressed the sentiment of wanting to help teach him, and he agreed they’d need to sort that out, before the fan was ushered over to @fmdyujin.

1. What do you identify as and what are your pronouns?
I identify as transmasculine and gay, and I use he/him pronouns.
3.Have you experienced being misgendered? What happened and how did you overcome it?
I am literally misgendered 80% of the time, even when trying TOO HARD to pass. I’ve noticed that it’s usually people that weren’t born and raised in Canada/this area that actually correct gender me I guess because it’s not as common in other countries?? Idk but anyway I kinda just go : ) and try not to die and then think about it for the rest of the day and maybe cry
5. Describe what it was like coming out, what did you feel?
I came out more than once and it was a mess. prepare for this, it’s gonna be long.
The first time I came out was on Twitter to my online friends and it was kind of just like “here’s what’s going on, please respect my choice,” and my friends were either like “awesome, i’m proud of you!” or “i saw this coming!”, it was generally good.
I came out to two teachers who ran QSA, one who had been a teacher of mine twice prior and whom I loved, and the other was one of the guidance counselors who I also grew to love. It was during one of our QSA meetings. I was terrified, red in the face, probably about to have an anxiety attack, and when I finally said it, they were like “oh! okay! what do you want us to call you?” and that was it. then they went “do you feel better now that you told us?” and yes, it felt great, and they were really good about referring to me as Zak and he/him pronouns for the rest of the year (this was in grade 12). I came out to a third teacher, who was another one of my favourite teachers and the head of the newspaper and it basically went “heymissineedtogetpermissiontowriteunderthenamezakbecausei’mtransisthatok” and she just went “sure”.
I came out to my mom while out with on a walk late at night with her. I’d just gotten home from school for Christmas break, and it was just overall shitty because everyone refers to me as Zak and he/him at school, but not at home. She was bitching about how she was getting plastic surgery to fix a scar that never healed right and how i “didn’t understand how it felt to want to change something so badly” and I was like “heh yeah ok” and she kept pushing me to tell her what it was. she was like “IF YOU WANT YOUR BOOBS TO BE SMALLER YOU CAN DO THAT, I DID THAT WHEN I WAS A LITTLE OLDER THAN YOU” and I was like “yes smaller as in non existent” and she made the face equivalent to that white woman trying to solve that math problem meme and she basically told me i was too young and stupid to know i was trans and that i was being a baby and it absolutely could not happen. i was already dating josh at this point, i went home and cried with him about it :)
she eventually accepted it, and the following national coming out day, i announced it on facebook because at that point i was like “NO MORE SECRETS I’M TIRED OF Y’ALL TELLING ME I LOOK LIKE A BOY LIKE IT’S A BAD THING FFS” and it felt good even though all my family and friends were like “omg i’m so proud of you (deadname)!” like rly bitch
6. If you’re out, how did your parents/guardians/friends react?
See above.
I’ll also add that most of my family and close friends were like “yeah, i guessed as much,” while my mom said “i thought you were just a butch lesbian” and my dad supposedly knew all along but i don’t believe him because he still hardly speaks english ffs
One of my “”friends”” when i came out in high school though, was like “yeah i’ve known you for so long i can’t just call you zak sorry” and yeah that’s the story of how i no longer interact with someone i used to call my best friend and she still has my walking dead game @ megan give it back
 8. Describe the style of clothing that you most often wear.
Overly masculine clothing usually. Like. You know That Clothing™. And also just generally very dark and emo still.
10. What does makeup mean to you? Do you wear any?
I don’t wear makeup, because, at the moment, it would just make me dysphoric. I think anyone can wear makeup if they want to, like, it’s your choice entirely and it can be a great way to express yourself and your artistic abilities, but. I’m trying so hard to not be feminine and since it’s so widely considered “”feminine”” I will avoid it until I look masculine enough to still pass while wearing makeup tbh

“Girl” Code
If not all, then I’m sure, many of us have heard of “girl” code. In girl world, it’s the so-called law, the unspoken rules. There was also the MTV show Girl Code. There are just tips, rules, and guidelines to being a girl. It’s like some huge secret amongst female being. But historically, I think, it might be quite obvious why girls and women spoke in whispers and secrets; they were barely allowed to speak without permission. To make a long story shorter, girlhood/womanhood is sacred to the point where we all know the move when someone throws in girl code. I, however, disagree.
You see I’ve recently been pushed to the brink. I believe in what I believe. I love what I believe in. I wish more people believed in what I do. But then I guess that would make for far less interesting, critical conversations. Honestly, truly, my alarms always sound when a conservative tries to speak for marginalized groups they don’t even support. I recognize that’s my own flaw. Sometimes things just don’t merit a response. My parents say that with age and maturity my fuse will lengthen. Until then I suppose I’ll have to remain my “abrasive and controversial” self, which means I can say, fuck girl code!
*sigh* January 21, 2017, a day after the inauguration, humans gathered globally to stand with women. I didn’t even realize it was going on, otherwise I would have loved to be at the Women’s March in Austin. For those of us who couldn’t attend we showed our solidarity the way people usually do these days: social media. In my opinion it was incredible. Not specifically Austin’s, or D.C.’s, or anyone in particular, but just as a general whole. Because in the wake of the world’s chaos, my nation’s chaos, and my own chaos, the world was gathering to stand up for all that is femme.
I’m femme af! It is my personal life mission to speak in terms that open the scope of what society defines as female and womanhood. While also standing up against what they are not but have been constructed as. The Women’s March garnered so much attention, like most things that attempt to bring women to a higher status than second class. Imagine that. Women and their allies said, “Square up!” to the world around them that genuinely seeks to keep them “in place”. January 21, 2017 was a beautiful day in women’s history! I could think of many ways some marches were problematic; that wouldn’t be the point. It’s not every day the world comes together for women. Can we cherish that just for a moment?
The problem that really stuck out for me regarding the Women’s March were the women who felt that the marchers did not represent them. To some the Women’s March was vulgar and a waste of time. Not to be a smartass, but those are also adjectives that have probably been used to define womanhood. Your worst nightmare might be women having complete, unapologetic control of their own bodies. Yet that is such a foreign thought across all nations and cultures in the world. Women just birth the babies, right? Another conversation. Now that I’ve ranted I’ll lead you back to my point. There was quite of bit of backlash post-Women’s March. Not the kind about white feminism or cis-women not including transwomen. It was literally women offended because, “I have no problems as a woman. We’re fine.” Shut up. Stop. I find it fair to mention the vulva hat that surfaced on my timeline. First of all, L O L ! Second, stop it. You completely missed the point.
Listen, somewhere right now, a girl just wrote on social media, “How could a girl mess with another girl’s boyfriend?” G U R L ! You know what? Maybe you’re right, maybe I shouldn’t flirt back with the guy who has a girl, who just slid into my DMs all cute. You’re so right BUT not today. Your problem is your little boyfriend, not the person who’s made zero commitment to you. But y’all…girl code!
·      Don’t mess with another girl’s boyfriend
·      Don’t support her rights to her own body
There we are. There is a subconscious responsibility as women to be loyal to other women when their men can’t, but not in the way we should. Rather than speaking up against rape culture, women say, “She shouldn’t have put herself in that situation.” Instead of supporting sexual education or reproductive health, we say, “Abortion is murder.” And when you’re boyfriend cheats on you, “She’s such a slut! I’ll always love my boyfriend!” I’m supposed to stop YOUR partner from pursuing me because if they’re ok with deceiving you then I can’t be, although you’re pro-life, anti-choice, and women have a role and women need to respect themselves. I could say that the Women’s March didn’t represent me as a black woman. I still have concerns with western feminists’ presence in intersectional movements. That’s still not the issue right now. I think there were many supporters amongst the Women’s Marches whom advocate for all female identities. You can easily support someone while not subscribing to the act. I’ve never had an abortion, I might never have an abortion, but I support women who do and I value my right as a woman to make my own decision to have an abortion or not. I don’t want to be a housewife. I don’t want to be the caretaker role on my own. I don’t think plastic surgery is the answer. Nudes have a time and place. On the other hand, I believe housewives and caring for children is a job, some plastic surgery looks great, and who hasn’t taken a naked photo of their body? I will support your right to do those things and your right to live the lifestyle you choose. The list is never ending because girl code is supporting females. Women across the world showed up and showed out to further the truth that female is a force.
I don’t care that you think abortion is murder, that’s your prerogative. I do care that you don’t support my right to one. Way too often women have to say, “I can’t be friends with girls. Girls are bitches. I’m not like other girls.” An angel loses their wings every time internal misogyny is expressed. The moral of the story is “girl code” will never be a real thing if women don’t respect each other enough to support them. And I don’t mean respect the girl whom has screwed you over constantly. Feminism or supporting women has never been about liking every woman. As humans, with thoughts of our own, that is impossible in many ways. Regardless, as people who share such an intimate commonality, of which has been condemned by the “dominant” sex/gender, I think women have come too far. We have taken too much male shit to stand on their side and continue to oppress women. All while males think the same about you. I say this with love. Think about how big male egos get when you try to throw hands with other girls over him? It was literally his idea to not use a condom…
Thanks for the read! February is Black History Month so starting tomorrow, in honor of black history and women crush Wednesday, I’ll be posting some of my favorite influential black women! See you soon, Wild Things!
 Best,
Brie J. Wilde
