So, as promised, a Lia analysis (Sorta. Basically just my thoughts, I don't know if it's cohesive enough to count as an "analysis.")

I think the main reason Lia is an underrated character is because of her lack of relevance. Like I've always adored her, but she wasn't really important until episode eight. And even then she doesn't play a crucial role until episode 10, when it's revealed that she leaked the audio.

In episode Eight we see Hailey singing a heartfelt song about her stage fright. Her feelings about Middle School and High School bullying. Essentially her story.

In that sequence we see her and who many assumed was Lia. This is confirmed when her and Lia have there conversation where Hailey say's "At least I didn't change myself for the approval of others."

So right there we can sort of see foreshadowing that Lia is important to the story. That there's more to her than just being a prissy asshole bully. She has reasons for why she is the way she is.

And then we're made to just... forget about it. Just move on with the main plot of forget that Lia has any sort of signifigance.

And normally I'd say this is bad writing, but in terms of how Lia was utilized as a character, it's genius.

Because when it's revealed she's the one who leaked the audio, shes the one who took away Jake's dreams, we look back and it actually makes sense.

We're remembering all of the little seeds planted throughout. It's a twist that makes enough sense, but not to the point where it was predictable.

It's amazing.

And what truly set's this apart from a lot of other series, is that they use this to actually amplify Lia's character. It makes her arc better and allows her to start on a path of redemption. It isn't wasted and it's well appreciated.

I also believe Lia is a masterclass in character writing. People need to put more respect on my girls name!

Outside of plot relevance, Lia on her own is actually in my top three complex characters (yes I made a list, the brain rot is real).

She parallels Jake (our protagonist) in huge ways. They were both bullied for their passions and hobbies, and both changed themselves to prevent the bullying from continuing.

This is why she latched onto him, because they're the same. They've got a lot of shared experiences. Which we can see well in their Episode Ten conversation.

She parallels Drew a ton, in that she misses Jake. She was extremely jealous that he was spending time with the club. Upset that he chooses them over her and his other friends. This caused her to do something drastic. Which she later regrets.

If we go with the one-sided Drake theory then she also parallels Drew in her feelings for Jake, but I've already talked about this in other posts (and this is mainly about my girl Lia, not shipping!)

Lia is also a foil of Hailey. They both have stories that start the same. They're friends who were both victims of harsh bullying by peers. Where the difference comes in is how they reacted to the bullying.

Hailey is the type of character that's very stubborn. So naturally she wouldn't let bullies change her. She would stick to her guns no matter what. It's a huge personality trait she had (before her writing got sorta butchered, but I already made a post about that).

Lia on the other hand, while not a weak person, she's not got the same type of stubbornness. She seems to be a push-over. We see this a lot in her "friendship" with Zoey. Zoey orders her around and tells her what to do. And until episode Eleven, she just takes it. Goes with the flow.

Hailey can be stubborn and pig-headed, while Lia sort of rolls over and does what is asked of her. They're fundamentally different that way.

At least until episode Eleven.

In episode Eleven we see Lia walking away from Zoey, she's fed up with her shit. She's done taking order's from the girl who tormented her so much in middle school. This is a huge character moment for her, that I hope they build on in Season Two.

Overall Lia was so well done. Despite her small amounts of screen time she is actually an amazing character. As I said before, a master class in character writing. Her actions and interactions with people feel so organic because of how she was written.

She feels like she could be an actual person you would meet in school. Not just some stereotypical mean girl.

I'll probably have more to say about Lia upon my rewatch of the series (which I plan to do tomorrow!). But for now, that's what I got to say!

Oh hello Lia! Of course, I wouldn't mind trying to help! You can always come and ask me about anything especially stuff like this!

Well, for me it was easier to figure out I was a lesbian because I had two moms and I knew about queerness from a young age, and that girls could love girls and boys could like boys (stuff like that!). So I'm not really sure how it really is for other people with different familial situations, especially ones with homophobic parents.. it can be a lot to learn and unlearn but with patience and time, you can get there someday!

I think one of the most basic questions of this is: who do you see yourself ending up with in the future? A man? Woman? Person? No one? Does it matter? Does it change anything? Can you see yourself with multiple of these people in a lasting relationship? It's ok to just try to sit down and think about it and how you would feel about doing "couply" stuff - like kissing, cuddling, holding hands - but with the same gender, and then see how you feel about it.

It's also important to notice that sexuality is a spectrum! You may despise the idea of kissing anyone but one specific person, or you may like people romantically like a flickering switch; on an off. You may find people attractive, but may not want to date them. And etc, etc. If you find yourself having complicated feelings on this matter, I recommend research! I think I could link some quizzes or articles to you if you need them!

There's a lotttt more to it, and it isn't as simple; but that was the start for me and when I first questioned it and I thought it mightve served as a good start to you too!

Anyway, hope that helped, Lia!! You can always talk to me if you need it, and I wish you good luck on your journey! Even if you don't end up being queer, you may find out something else about yourself! It's really about self exploration and discovery and I hope you the best!
