Lecture 16: PUNK! The Clash – nicknamed by their fans “the Only Band That Matters” – performs their overtly political song “Clampdown” (off of their landmark London Calling album) at the Lewisham Odeon in Lewisham (an area of London) in 1980. Formed in 1976, The Clash lasted about a decade before breaking up officially, although the band really ended after Mick Jones departed from the band in 1983 after being “fired.” Without the creative collaboration between Jones and Joe Strummer, the band’s days were numbered. Yet they leave a potent legacy, and are often remembered as the greatest punk band of all time.
