Dry Cleaning Late Night Preview: 1/9, NBC

BY JORDAN MAINZER
Of the current rash of excellent UK post-punk bands, South London’s Dry Cleaning are the monarchs of mundane, foregoing their counterparts’ hooks, screams, and musical ostentatiousness in favor of subtlety and sprechgesang. On their early EPs and two terrific full-length albums for 4AD, frontperson Florence Shaw’s hilarious observations and kiss-offs rule the roost, the unmistakable aspect of the band both on record and live. Just watch their performance of “Scratchcard Lanyard” from last year’s Glastonbury Festival: Shaw stands still, her face contorting into uncomfortable expressions, her hands and fingers slowly curling and pointing as she deadpans words about doing everything and feeling nothing. Meanwhile, guitarist Tom Dowse and bassist Lewis Maynard scream, jump, and bounce, and the former’s swirling, yet jagged edges and the latter’s earworm lines fitting around Shaw’s delivery. Drummer Nick Buxton is a motorik machine. It’s a successful formula.
On the band’s return to the U.S., which includes a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this evening and Thalia Hall on Friday, they’ll likely be prioritizing the songs from last October’s Stumpwork. The band’s sophomore album, Stumpwork achieves the perfect balance of retaining the spirit of their beloved debut New Long Leg while adding a few new elements to the mix. There are still observations about the absurdity of life, but they’re more optimistic and natural, like on “Kwenchy Kups” or “Driver’s Story”. Surrealism and imagination enter the stage on “Liberty Logs”. Shaw actually sings a little bit, and even plays the recorder on “Don’t Press Me”. For as many references as there are to hospitals and grief--multiple family members of the band passed away just before Stumpwork was made--there are words about toads, rats, and the type of critters whose very existence represents the sort of ugly resilience the band references on its most to-the-point line ever: “Things are shit, but they’re gonna be okay.”

Album Review: Dry Cleaning - Stumpwork
Album Review: Dry Cleaning – Stumpwork
Words: Ben Forrester Following in the footsteps of Black Country, New Road and TV Priest, Dry Cleaning are striking whilst the iron is hot by quickly following up their 2021 debut. ‘New Long Leg’ showed a tighter, more assured progression of their charged up EPs, expertly displaying a locked in post-punk band completed by captivating vocals. It was just as their debut was being released that…

Stuck on D (3/30)
November 16, 2022 is the last time we spoke.
In the last 138 days I have done my damndest to put you out of my mind the way you so clearly have put me out of yours.
138 days later and I still listen to the playlist I made about you almost every single day. I'm still adding songs to it. I'm still processing how and why I fell in love with a man who only every loved what's between my legs.
But I did. And I do.
I do still hope to get the notification. I do still hope you thought of me when you saw Daniel Caesar's latest release. I do still hope you realize your mistake. I do still hope to wake up to your face.
But I know better than to believe I'll ever be more than a passing thing.

BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT, I'm back with more Sad Boat Books for Sad Boat People! But first, some words.
I never dreamed that a silly little graphic I made for some friends would generate this much response on twitter and here, but I'm overjoyed that it resonated with so many of you! I read every single comment and tag, and by far my favorites are all of the people who say some variation of "I thought I was the only one who loved these books." We are NOT alone, there are literally thousands of people who reblogged or retweeted this list-- people of all ages and backgrounds and gender identities. Sad Boat isn't just for old white men! I was also delighted to hear from other librarians who are using this in displays and for reader's advisory. PLEASE go forth and do so with my blessing, nothing would make me happier! I was recently laid off from my librarian job as part of a restructuring under new management (don't worry about me, it sucks right now but I'm gonna be fine), so I would love to think that I'm still contributing to the library ecosystem while I'm out of commission. I would also love to keep making these lists (including one that deals with Sad Boat fiction and one with recommendations for other types of media), and I've never had more time to do it, so if you have suggestions, please drop them in my inbox!
Anyway, enough of that-- here are more books! I've either read all of these, or the recommendation came from someone I trust, so read with confidence!
