Final Battle preview

Athena vs. Billie Starkz - Athena has held the ROH women's world championship for a little over a year, and this will be her 19th (!) title defense. She's 1-0 against the challenger, having defeated Starkz in a non-title match on June 25.
Shortly afterward, Athena took Billie under her wing--it's been so long that I've completely forgotten when, or why. For weeks ROH aired skits about Starkz being a "minion in training," but always disappointing Athena compared to Lexy Nair (who was also undergoing training for some reason). After Athena proclaimed that Lexy had "graduated" but Billie didn't make the cut, Billie snapped. On the December 14 show (taped last week) Starkz did a run-in on Athena, demonstrating all the viciousness she learned from her former mentor, and Athena suffered a legit broken nose.
Presumably this match will follow the old trope of "I taught you everything you know, but I didn't teach you everything I know." Either Billie has learned from Athena how to beat Athena, or she hasn't. Or maybe she can beat Athena by rejecting Athena's teachings, I don't know. It's safe to say she'll put up more of a fight than she did in June, but I'm not convinced it'll be enough. At the last ROH pay-per-view, they had be thinking Willow Nightingale could unseat the champion, but it didn't happen. And with all due respect to Starkz, she's not at Willow Nightingale's level--not yet anyway.
I'm in favor of seeing a title change. Athena's done all she can do in ROH except kickstart a women's tag team division (and if she was gonna do that, Billie would still be her sidekick). A sympathetic babyface champion would be a nice change of pace--someone who can play the underdog against the likes of Leyla Hirsch, Marina Shafir, or Mercedes Martinez. I would have preferred doing it six months ago with Willow, but much like Athena Willow should be on AEW television at this point. So I'll take Billie as ROH champion, but I'm not at all confident that ROH is going to give it to me.
Jon Moxley & Bryan Danielson & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Mark Briscoe & Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler - This is billed as a "fight without honor," which just means the match can't end by disqualification or count-out. The idea is to pay tribute to Mark's brother Jay Briscoe, who was killed in a car accident on January 17, 2023. Jay and Mark began an epic rivalry with FTR (Dax and Cash) at Final Battle 2021, which concluded with Jay's last match at Final Battle 2022.
From what I can tell, the Blackpool Combat Club are heading into this match looking to honor Jay rather than play the heels. But the BCC are particularly good at acting like sadistic assholes even when they're supposed to be good guys. This is Claudio's first ROH match since September. Danielson, an ROH hall-of-famer, hasn't wrestled for the brand since 2009. It's been just as long for Moxley, except his ROH experience was just dark matches--this will be his on-screen debut with the promotion.
Moxley, Danielson, Castagnoli, and Briscoe are all booked in AEW's Continental Classic; in fact, Bryan and Claudio have tournament matches slated for tomorrow, and they'll face each other next week. Moxley has probably clinched a spot in the semfinals, and Briscoe is already mathematically eliminated. I doubt this match will affect the complexion of the tournament, but you can count on the announcers to bring it up a time or two.
I would imagine the goal here is to recreate the bloody chaos from the Briscoe-FTR matches last year. The BCC shouldn't have any difficulty holding up their end of that. I'd normally pick the BCC to win, but given the tribute angle it'd be promotional malpractice to book any finish except a Mark Briscoe victory.
Dalton Castle vs. Komander vs. Kyle Fletcher vs. Lee Johnson vs. Lee Moriarty vs. ??? - This is the final in a "survival of the fittest" tournament; the winner will be awarded the ROH television title, which Samoa Joe vacated on November 8. Each of the participants won a qualifying match to get here, except the mystery sixth entrant. The final is contested under elimination rules, so whenever someone loses a fall they leave and the match continues until only one man remains, who is declared the winner. Note that Komander's AAA cruiserweight title is not at stake in this contest.
I have no idea who the sixth participant could be, but it seems like he has to be a heavy favorite to win the whole thing. I'd be happy to see Bandido, Mark Davis, or PAC return, but I'm not sure any of them really work as a shocking comeback that will upset the balance of this match. A new guy coming in could work. Shelton Benjamin and Dolph Ziggler are free, right? Oh well, just in case the sixth guy isn't cool enough to win, I'll fall back on Castle as my go-to guy.
Keith Lee vs. Shane Taylor - Lee and Taylor were a tag team in ROH years ago, but they split up with Keith jumped to NXT. A year ago Taylor made it known that he resented Lee over this, so they clashed in a two-on-two match, which Lee's team won. Then nothing really happened for a long time, until Taylor suddenly brought it up again and they decided to do run it back one-on-one. I suppose it'd be interesting if Taylor upset Lee, but I don't expect it to happen here.
Wheeler Yuta vs. Tom Lawlor - Yuta is defending the ROH pure title, so this match is under pure rules: You can only use the ropes to break a hold up to three times, and you can only get away with one strike to the face, and so on. Lawlor has been a regular in MLW and NJPW STRONG, but he hasn't gotten many opportunities to appear with AEW/ROH. Yuta likes to bully opponents with his grappling expertise, but Tom has MMA power so that probably won't work here. Yuta will retain, I'm sure, but he'll need every trick in his book.
Ethan Page vs. Tony Nese - This is an "I quit" match, so the only way to win is to compel your opponent to verbally submit by literally saying the words "I quit." Over the past few months, these two have gone 1-1 against each other, and I guess Nese cheated to win the first match and refused to shake Page's hand in the second. I don't know, I don't really care why they're fighting.
An "I quit" match can go one of two ways--either both guys absolutely torture each other for a long time, or one guy chickens out and quits over the threat of something that doesn't seem so bad. I'm not sure which we'll get here. I really hope we don't get some bullshit where the heels trick the referee into thinking Ethan quit. I mean, Rock vs. Mankind was 25 years ago, and I don't think anyone's pulled that shit since then, but I'm still hot over it. Ideally, Nese should quit because of something really dangerous-looking.
El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Black Taurus - Vikingo is defending the AAA mega championship. Taurus is a AAA regular but I mainly associate him with appearing in Impact, so it's a little surprising to see him here. Of course, I never seem to see him win at anything, so this should be an easy win for Vikingo.
Brian Cage & Toa Liona & Bishop Kaun vs. Shane Haste & Kosei Fujita & Bad Dude Tito - Cage's team is putting the ROH trios title on the line. The Gates of Agony (Kaun and Liona) just returned from New Japan's World Tag League tournament, where they went 2-5. One of those five losses came at the hands of Shane Haste and his regular partner Mikey Nicholls. I'm not sure why Nicholls isn't here, but their associates in TMDK are here. The important thing is Haste is the one with the cool hat and the cool music, and Tito is literally named BAD DUDE. Fujita is their young boy, though, and that poor little guy is going to get squashed real real bad. Champs retain.
Ross Von Erich & Marshall Von Erich vs. Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd - This is set for the pre-show. Ross and Marshall are the sons of Kevin Von Erich, who has a movie coming soon about his career wrestling in Dallas. This show is being held just outside Dallas. You do the math. I dig the Outrunners (Magnum and Floyd) but this just ain't their lucky day.

I didnt get to AEW liveblog this week because I'm sick. Again. But I want to have my own Dan Lambert rant because I'm just so over this guy. I cannot think of a single person who has come out of anything involving Lambert looking good, you know? It killed the Inner Circle for me, Men of the Year do not need a mouthpiece, he doesn't suit Archer's presentation at all, plus its a waste of a perfectly good Jake Roberts, Danielson took one sentance of a promo to say all the cowboy nonsense Lambert has been spouting for the past half a month, now we have this Brandi Paige stuff that nobody asked for or understands. Brandi's just decided to be a heel (and I want to clarify that I'm ragging on the character, not the person, I am sure IRL Brandi is as lovely as she seems on her youtube show) and its mudded all of this weird angle that has no direction or sense to it, plus there are so many women who would match up to legit MMA fighter Paige VanZant better than Brandi - Can you imagine if we were getting this with Leyla Hirsch or Thunder Rosa instead? And yes I know Leyla just turned heel but let me fantasy book a moment

AEW Rampage March 18, 2022
Tumblr media
Who's on the card tonight?
Darby Allin & Sting
The Butcher, The Bunny & The Blade
AFO
Hardys
Legit Leyla Hirsch
Red Velvet
Kris Statlander
House Of Black
Fuego Del Sol
Bear Country
The Acclaimed
Keith Lee
Powerhouse Hobbs
Ricky Starks
Swerve Strickland
Darby Allin and the Butcher are starting tonight. They've all got their possees with them and Butcher is coming out strong. He likes beating people up and I'd have to guess Darby doesn't mind being a little beat up. It isn't until Darby spears Butcher into the barricade with his shoulder that Darby seems to be turning the tables, but a failed coffin drop turns them right back. Darby's eating his hand and doesn't let go until he's knocked flat. Apparently Butcher is also a guitar player. I did not know this. Darby's getting swung around by his neck and it is looking incredibly painful. With every additional hit, Darby's just looking more and more dead on his feet. He gets Darby into a rough hold by his feet that becomes a powerbomb and back into the hold. Darby's understandably got a messed-up knee afterwards. With Darby's legs firmly attached around Butcher's neck, he's getting swung into every metal surface available on the floor. Stairs, barricades and posts. With a final coffin drop, Darby wins with a rough count-out.
Andrade El Idolo strides out, distracting Darby and Sting as the rest of the AFO ambush them from behind. Before too much damage is done, the Hardys run out to their aid. They give Darby a hand to his feet. Matt challenges the AFO to a bout right here and right now and it looks like they're about to have a serious rumble. Andrade steps back at the last second and Matt changes his offer to next Wednesday, an 8-man Texas Tornado match in Austin. No one looks all too enthusiastic at the idea, but I am. I am mentally busting a nut about this.
Next up is Leyla Hirsch against Red Velvet. Before the bell rings, before Red even gets to the ring, Leyla has intentions for blood and runs to get her on the ramp. Once they do make it to the ring, Red hits a moonsault and a nearfall. They're incredibly well-matched with Leyla using her legs a lot more and getting some solid hits in. Leyla tries to sneak in a turnbuckle connector as a weapon, but before she can use it, Kris Statlander pops up and rips it from Leyla's hand. A distraction from Kris and a corkscrew kick from Red lets her get the pin.
After commercials, the House Of Black come out to the ring for a trios tag team match against Fuego Del Sol and Bear Country. The commentators are all talking about how this is certain to be a pitiful squash match and after only a few moments, they don't look wrong. Boulder gets trapped in a 3-on-1, and shoved out of the ring. Fuego takes his place and tries to hold his own, but he's more or less squashed completely with Buddy Matthews getting the pin.
Max Caster is backstage for the main event with Anthony Bowens backing up his roasts. Keith Lee explains that he's a fan of The Acclaimed, but that they're just a stepping stone and the beginnings of a King or a Royal Gimmick are brought up. That could be very fascinating. Once they get into the ring, Keith's being merciless on Max's injured left arm. Or just merciless in general. Just beating the ever-loving piss out of him. The tables do turn a little when Keith gets drop-kicked and choked on the bottom rope. But just a little. Keith dominates the match firmly, then turns his attention to Powerhouse Hobbs, who's come out to the commentary table and is now stalking down the ramp. Ricky Starks follows quickly. The two of them and The Acclaimed team up to start beating on Keith, but they're interrupted by Swerve Strickland who comes out with a chair and chases off Keith's attackers.
END OF SHOW

There was so much good on Revolution!!! Legit the only match that really failed to impress me was the Thunder Rosa vs Britt Baker match.
Lets see, here’s my ratings.
Leyla Hirsch vs Statlander was solid. Great room for that feud to continue and grow. And for Leyla to become an even greater heel. There’s even room for Statlander to go a bit heel herself. 🛸🛸🛸
Hook vs QT was good, always love to see Hook one way or another and QT did pretty good. Not much to say honestly, great to see Hook in a longer match. ⭐⭐⭐
One of my favorite moments of the night is Excalibur offering Tony Schiavone more and more money to punch Don Callis in the face. “Five hundred dollars, Tony, I swear to god.” 🤣
House of Black vs Death Triangle + Erick Redbeard was so great. Everybody in that match impressed me, they did not have to go that hard for a buy-in match and yet they did. Loved it. Brody King and Erick Redbeard should not be able to move that quick at their sizes and YET ⭐⭐⭐+1/2
Eddie Kingston vs Jericho: OH MY GOD JERICHO TAPPED OUT TO EDDIE KINGSTON I’M LOSING MY SHIT! I’m so happy Eddie went over in that match. Genuinely probably the second best match of the night. Eddie just clinging to Ref Aubrey was a wonderful juxtaposition with Jericho shoving her in anger earlier. And Eddie being so surprised that he won. My heart 😭. Eddie is a spectacular wrestler and he deserved this win so much. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Jurassic Express vs The Young Bucks vs reDRagon: Any match featuring the Young Bucks is gonna be a banger. Put them in a match with Jurassic Express AND reDRagon? Fucking spectacular. There wasn’t a moment that felt dull in this match and I’m pleased with the outcome. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Face of the Revolution Ladder match: *supervillain pose* excellent. Sorry, sorry, I made 3 predictions at the start of this year and 1 and a half of them have come to pass and with Wardlow winning the ladder match we’re one step closer to my third prediction coming true. Anyway, this was always going to be a treat, you’ve got big beefy men, you’ve got Christian Cage in a ladder match, you’ve got Ricky Starks, you’ve got Orange Cassidy! And a Surprise Danhausen. ⭐⭐⭐
Swerve Strickland is All Elite and I can’t wait to see more from him already!
Jade vs Tay: I love both of them so much and this was the best women’s match of the night. Tay’s incredible, Jade’s incredible. They’re both doing awesome and anyone who tells you otherwise is smoking something weird. Jade’s frog splash was really good! Like I’ve seen veterans of the business who can’t hit a frog splash that well. Both these ladies are gonna go incredible places in their careers. ⭐⭐⭐
CM Punk vs MJF: Match of the night. Maybe match of the year. Maybe match of the decade. I love everything about this match. From the moment Punk walks out to his Ring of Honor music, in his ROH gear, someone I was talking to about it said it was like a movie in the best possible way and I couldn’t agree more. Then you have MJF grabbing a mic in the early part of the match to yell at CM Punk only to have Punk tell him to ‘Eat shit, Max’. Glorious. Of course if tacks make you squeamish or you can’t handle blood I’d avoid this one but otherwise you owe it to yourself to go watch this match. And that ending *chef’s kiss* ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Britt vs Thunder Rosa:... like I get they were put in a rough spot having to go on after THAT MATCH, but feels like it could’ve been better. I really don’t like how the match ended and I’m getting sick to death of the interference angle. Britt Baker (D.M.D.) is a great wrestler, Thunder Rosa is a great wrestler. Let them wrestle. ⭐
Mox vs Danielson: So good. Mox and Brian Danielson are two of the best wrestlers in the world, there was no question they were always going to put on one of the best matches of the night and then FUCKING WILLIAM ‘EVERYBODY’S WRESTLING DAD’ REGAL??????? WILLIAM ‘CAN SPOT THE BEST TALENT FROM SIX HUNDRED MILES AWAY’ REGAL???? THAT WILLIAM REGAL??? If there hadn’t been other people in the house with me I might have pterodactyl screeched. As it is I just shouted ‘OH MY GOD’ and almost started crying. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
AHFO vs Sting, Darby, and Sammy: Does Sting know he’s 63? I think he’s forgotten. Everybody did awesome in this match and completely won me over. Just a glorious spot fest which I adored! And now Sting has two sons. Favorite spot is either Sting putting Andrade through the tables or Sammy’s Spanish Fly off the top of the entrance tunnels. ⭐⭐⭐+1/2
It’s TIME for the MAIN EVENT, Battle of the Adams: I was cheering for Adam. Okay, I’m kidding, I was actually cheering for Adam. Seriously though, Hangman is my champ, I got back into wrestling just as he returned and the first Pay-Per-View I watched in something like 15 years was Full Gear 2021. Of course I’m gonna have a Hangman bias. But this was a great match no matter what. Hangman’s moonsaults off the top rope where he doesn’t even look to see where his opponent is scare the crap out of me every time. Adam Cole and his Halo inspired ring gear were a joy as well. Those Panama Sunrises looked devastating, I was fully prepared to see a title change and I was so torn, but THEN Hangman hits that buckshot lariat, the ref counts one, the ref counts two, the ref counts three and I weep silently. That’s my champion. Nothing but respect. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
OI, TONY KHAN, I need a streaming service so I can watch these matches back over and over again and WEEP because this is a great time to be a wrestling fan.
