10 years ago it was rare to see a Bluebird
anywhere around Kennebunk. 4 years ago
the first ones showed up in our yard, and
have been coming for mealworms year
around ever since. The pair of full adults
nest in bird box a few yards over, and their
young from each season are with them
pretty much until the first brood of the next
year hatches. And I know there are other
families nesting every dozen houses or so
between here and downtown Kennebunk,
both sides of Brown Street. They nest
along the bridle path, at least 2 pairs,
in the section I walk, and a couple of pairs
at Laudholm Farms around the buildings,
and at least one pair in the thicket between
Roger’s Pond and the water works, and
several pairs out on the Kennebunk Plains
near the pond there where I go. I know lots
of species are struggling, but the Eastern
Bluebird does not seem to be among them,
at least not here in southern Maine, in
and around Kennebunk and Wells, places
that I know and go. And that’s a good thing.
For the bluebirds and, I am pretty sure, for us.

My friend and client, the artist Pamela Moulton, had a friend send her a picture of a hawk sitting atop one of her sculptures! I told her to take notice and look for a sign. When a hawk appears in your life, look for signs to help guide you! What was the hawk doing? What were you doing? What were you thinking or having having issue with? From the photos I thought it was telling her that she would reach new heights! And, actually, I know that, after years of hard work, acting on inspiration, and a huge artistic output, she's now been offered an installation opportunity in Las Vegas! And to toot my own horn ☺️, this was after a reading she had that directed her to promote her work on Instagram and social media a lot more often! She did! Someone saw it and, of course, was able to recognize her genius! Yay! It’s During the Time of the Pandemic
and my husband insists on us driving to maine,
picnic-ing by a marsh,
a man in a surgical mask rifles through our basket--unwrapping, then taking apart our tiffin like a curious yogi bear,
telling us, "sorry guys, I didn't mean to go through your things, I just wanted to see what the book was,”
there, at Laudholm Farm, on the edge of the sea...
and K fastidiously cleaning his car as I sit on a concrete slab by air pumps,
a feeling as though the country has emptied out...
the wind whipping around...

We had our car in for its yearly new
battery…something in the design
of the hybrid electrical system kills
a 12 volt battery every year…and,
originally to have the blower fan
in the dash replaced, for the second
time. It was thumping and rattling,
vibrating strong enough to worry
at anything over low speed, and it
has, as I say, happened before.
Thing is it stopped doing it 2 days
before our appointment and seems
to be working fine. We have chipmunks
living in the car…we have known
this for years. They get up under
the hood in the cavities over the
wheels, and I suspect they tried
to store acorns in fan…or maybe
they were just trying to use it as
a food processor to make acorn
flour. Evidently the fan finally finished
the grind cycle and the offending
acorn fell out. I woke in the night
thinking about it. Maybe there is
a children’s book there…the
chipmunk family that lives in the car
and goes on adventures were
we go? Sneaking out to find
spillings in the grocery store parking,
exploring the edges of the lot
at Laudholm Farms or Rachel
Carson, meeting wild chipmunks
in the big world beyond our drive.
Maybe loosing the occasional
family member when they don’t
make it back to the car in time?
Or the time they chewed the
wiring harness for the radio
causing it to crackle and spit.
Such larks! All I need now is a
catchy title. Carmunks?
