In light of a certain new fic, I have a Very important question for you. What would Dan and Blair's wedding playlist consist of?
*cackling like a villian* muahahahhaaha I love this question bc it's not only a chance to rec more songs to you and push my taste on all you lovely followers, but it involves some very granular meta soul searching which greatly appeals to me. I am not going to do one of my full unhinged playlists but I will share a few links :)
I think Blair and Dan are def band people over DJ people, so they would opt for live music with a band that can play all the crowd pleasers. Blair obviously loves herself the standards, and so does Dan, for all his punk hipster tendencies, so there's lots of slow dances to be had. The following are selections that I believe the two of them would categorize as must-plays (to both their tastes), which would show up alongside the required reading for every wedding setlist : Whitney Houston, Beatles, Hall and Oates' "Making My Dreams Come True," and "Love on Top" plus Nate's pleas for more bangers
these are curated from the show itself, my Dair & Dan & Blair playlists, plus my personal "Standards to Yearn to," Post Modern Jukebox, and "Good Covers" playlists - I opted for lots of covers because that capture the wedding band vibe to me
This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) - as performed by Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox
Dreams - The Cranberries
Dancing on My Own - as performed by Morgan James
All the Things You Are - Ella Fitzgerald
Call On Me - Big Brother & the Holding Company
Never My Love - as performed by Jakob Dylan and Norah Jones
Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen
Tumbling Dice - as performed by The Gaslight Anthem
Dancing in the Dark - as performed by Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox
Till There Was You - as performed by Peggy Lee
Thank You - Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats
Still Into You - as performed by Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox
Songbird - as performed by Eva Cassidy
The Nearness of You - as performed by Morgan James
Time after Time - Cyndi Lauper (DUH)
Like Someone in Love - Chet Baker
Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool for You) - Aretha Franklin
What I Need - Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats
I Only Have Eyes for You - as performed by Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox

It's Never Wrong When You're In Love...
I haven’t felt this type of thing in a while. I thought I lost myself in love until I found you.
- “Natural” Sabrina Claudio
I’m telling you right now from this day on, I’ve already weighed out the pros and cons, your just the woman I want.”
-"4evermore" Anthony David (ft. Algebra)
Tumblr media
“Mrs. Jordan,” Michael leaned over and whispered in his bride’s ear. “Yes, Mr. Jordan?” Zoe beamed as she and her new husband waited for their cue to walk into the reception party. “You look absolutely breathtaking today. Coming down that aisle I was watching you like hot damn that’s my lady,” Michael grinned as Zoe slapped his arm, laughter falling from her lips. “Shut up, you were crying too,” the bride reminded, allowing Michael to wrap his arm around her waist.
“Yeah but that was the internal monologue,” he insisted as one of the tech workers handed each of them a microphone. The intro to “4evermore” by Anthony David began to blare on the other side of the banquet hall doors. “You ready?”
Zoe nodded and took her husband's hand. The doors opened on cue and the couple walked in belting their respective parts of the song.
“Forever’s a mighty long time but I really wanna spend it with you. I shine when you shine. There's really no substitute. 4evermore,”
The two danced around each other singing along with the track. The audience joined in clapping as the newlyweds continued their performance. “I’m making my plans just to be with you. It’s you and me, babe, till the days are through, And I ain’t ashamed, love, to say I do,” Michael crooned
They went through the chorus again before Zoe got her chance to shine, consequently surprising the guests who’d never heard her sing, “Pick a tree to carve our names, let the world know it’s not a game. Last longer than a wedding ring, generations tattooed with the love we bring. From the seeds we sow, to the time it takes to grow. Long enough to show you, I won’t let go of you. Without you, I'm incomplete, like this love song without this beat. I’m saying you are the man I need,” Zoe sang causing the crowd to erupt in cheers.
“I didn’t know Zoe could sing,” Shuri leaned over to her brother who was carrying both of his children in his arms. “She doesn’t often, but she’s great,” he nodded, trying to stop the regret flooding through his veins by bouncing his fussy two, almost, three-year-olds. He watched as their mother spun and sang with her husband. A man that wasn’t him. A man who was making her laugh and having fun on the dance floor as Camden started the rap verse in the song. His attention was then pulled to Nakia, as she laughed and danced on the sidelines of the dance floor cheering on Zoe and Michael with the rest of the bridesmaids and groomsmen.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up for the new Mr. And Mrs. Michael B. Jordan. That was the best wedding entrance I’ve ever seen,” the DJ announced as the crowd began settling back in their seats. Zoe-Iman laughed as Michael handed over their mics and pulled her in close for their first dance. “I’m serious, who giving the new Mrs. Jordan a record deal, cause sis got some mad pipes. I know all this money in here, there’s gotta be a music exec looking for fresh talent. But, imma get off my soapbox so this new union can enjoy their first dance as husband and wife.”
Soon, “Butterflies Pt.2” by Queen Naija was drifting from the speakers as Michael gently swayed with his new wife, the couple singing along softly to each other. “You going to ask Nakia to dance?” Shuri caught her brother’s attention as she grabbed her niece from his arms. Not wanting to be left behind, Meluzmi began wriggling from his father’s arms to get down to the floor with his sister. “I don’t think Nakia wants to talk to me.” The king glanced again at his ex-wife dancing with Camden. “Nonsense, you all were friends first,” Ramonda interrupted, stooping to kiss both of her grandchildren. “That is why your father, and hers, thought you would make a great match.”
“You all are running the country well together, for over a year now.” Shuri pointed out smiling as the toddlers began bopping along to the song with each other. “Business conversations do not mean she will want to dance with me. Besides, she seems like she is having a good time with Camden.”
Shuri shook her head, “I’m taking the twins to dance, Mama, do something with him please,” the now 19-year old shook her head and headed towards the floor as the song shifted, signaling that other couples could join the wedding party on the floor. “Dance with me,” Ramonda extended a hand and the son turned king accepted and escorted her onto the floor.
“You know,” the queen mother started a few seconds later, “the first time you brought Zoe home, I was sure that within a year or two, you’d be telling your father you wanted to marry her.”
T’Challa smiled, “I was that obvious?”
Ramonda chuckled, “Painfully. You were looking at her like a lovesick fool the whole time she was there. Your father tried several times to give you his permission to date him. Even blatantly asking if you all were dating, but you were so stubborn.”
T’Challa looked away and swallowed, “It was not my finest hour and it will forever remain one of my biggest regrets, but I am happy for her.”
“You are, but you are also jealous. Zoe gave you plenty of chances, she even bore your children T’Challa but you were so stubborn, you lost your chance. Now that she’s happy, you should try to find happiness of your own. If not with Nakia, try again with someone. Don’t spend your life believing these were the only two women who could ever have been a great wife. Zoe found her happiness, Nakia is working on hers, it’s time you find your own.”
“Umama-” the king started. “Happiness outside of your children T’Challa, you need adult company too. Company you actually like, the elders don’t count.”
The king sighed and glanced across the room, “I’d like to try again, but I fear I will always wonder what Nakia and Zoe think of her.”
“That is your problem, you always wonder what everyone else is thinking, son.”
“You loved Zoe, but you were so afraid that we would hate her, you hid her and lost her. You had feelings for Nakia, but you wondered what she would think about what you had done to Zoe, so you pushed her away. Stop wondering what one girl will think about the other. Find your happiness, then bring her around. You always attract wonderful people, and we all always love each other. Think about it son, who else’s ex-wife is good friends with the woman her husband was cheating and had children with?”
Ramonda laughed, watching Zoe and Nakia dance with the rest of the wedding party. The king joined in chuckling as his mother continued, “Stop pitting the women against each other before they can even meet. Just let yourself fall in love freely son. We just want you to be happy.”
Zoe instinctively held her head further back as a smirk crossed her new husband’s lips. “Now, Michael, this is a very expensive white dress-”
“And you look beautiful baby-,” he raised his hand with a piece of cake in it closer to Zoe’s face. “Michael,” Zoe whined as his smirk turned into a full-on grin, “What? I’m just trying to feed my beautiful wife.”
“No, you are not!” Zoe laughed and dodged Michael’s hand, “I don’t wanna ruin my makeup, I paid a lot for it,” the bride pouted. “Fine,” the groom sighed, “I’ll be on my best behavior.”
“Thank you,” Zoe beamed and allowed him to feed her the piece of cake, she leaned in, kissed his lips, and smashed the piece of cake and icing onto his face, “Gotcha,” she cackled as Michael wiped icing from his mouth. The guests doubled over in laughter as he wrapped a giggling Zoe up in his arms and shook her. “You play dirty,” he laughed. “Mama!” two voices cried out as Ka’aulani and Meluzmi ran to their mom and stepfather. “Cake,” Meluzmi pleaded and his twin nodded her head in agreement. “Okay baby, “Zoe smiled. Michael cut them two small pieces and handed Zoe a plate. The caterers took over cutting up the rest of the large cake for the couple as they led their children over to the main table.
Michael took his self-proclaimed best friend Meluzmi in his lap and let him try and figure out how to spear the soft pieces of dessert, before eventually helping him out. Not wanting her daughter to ruin her dress or hair, Zoe still couldn't understand how so much of the toddler’s meals ended up in her curls, the mother alternated between feeding the toddler and herself. The small family sat sharing cake in silence, bobbing softly to the beat of Kiss Me More while watching their guests tear it up on the dance floor and fight over pieces of cake. “There you two are!” Shuri sighed obviously frustrated, “ T’Challa is gonna kill me, he wanted me to keep them so you could enjoy yourself.”
“Girl,” Zoe dismissed. “He will be fine. My babies just wanted some cake and their mommy.”
On cue, the twins giggled. “Are you having fun?”
Shuri shrugged, I’m just glad to see you happy,” The teen admitted. “Yeah but you’re young, you should be out dancing, and not with two-year-olds.”
“I got a cousin, he’s 20, but I think y’all get along great,” Michael grinned and called the boy over. As predicted he and Shuri hit it off and as the party forged ahead, the couple saw the two dancing and shared a fist bump. “We’re definitely the matchmaking couple,” Zoe beamed.
As the party began to wind down hours later, T’Challa approached the couple for the second time that day and cleared his throat. “My mother and I were about to leave, I was gonna take the twins,” the king gestured towards the children sleeping peacefully, each spread over two chairs pushed together. “Oh okay, thank you for coming and babysitting,” Zoe Iman Jordan hugged her former best friend, ex-lover, and the father of her children, “I’m gonna go say goodnight to mama,” she squeezed Michael’s hand before leaving in search of the older matriarch. “I’ll help you grab the kids, '' Michael broke the silence.
T’Challa nodded and they grabbed the slobbering children from their makeshift beds and headed out of the venue to the cars. Once both twins were buckled, they leaned against the car awaiting the women’s arrival. “Michael thank you.”
“For what?” The actor turned to the monarch. “For loving Zoe and for bringing the light back to her life. For taking care of her and loving my children as your own, even when I wasn’t man enough to do the same.”
Michael nodded, “You know for the longest I hated you. I didn’t understand how one man could be so self-involved he couldn’t see how amazing of a woman he had right in his hand. I hated that you messed with Zoe’s head, made her second guess herself. Then I finally got her to a good place, she opened up, we were having a good time, then she found out she was pregnant. You wouldn’t even text her back about your own kids.” T’Challa nodded and shoved his hands in his pockets, “If I could do it all again, I would do it differently believe me.”
I know,” the groom agreed, “but everything happens for a reason. I don’t approve of what you did, but if you had been a good partner, I probably wouldn’t be married to the love of my life right now. So I forgive you. And those kids, they are like my own. I am beyond glad that you’ve stepped up for them. I want them to have their father and a bonus father in their lives. You stay involved and love them, then there are no hard feelings between us.” The acclaimed actor extended a hand and T’Challa accepted his handshake. “You have my word, I’m never leaving them again.”
“Good.” Michael leaned back against the car and crossed his legs, hands stuffed in his tuxedo pockets. “So what’s next for you?” He asked a few beats later.
T’Challa exhaled, “I’m not sure, but I do know I wanna get my life back on track. Find someone and treat her right.”
“Then you do that man,” they stood up off of the car as Ramonda approached. “I just wonder what she’ll think of this family. It’s all a little bizarre isn’t it?”
“Yeah most baby mamas and ex-wives aren’t best friends, especially under our circumstances, but if she loves you and you love her, there’ll always be room in the family.”
“I appreciate that Michael.”
“Shuri staying with Nakia?” The actor asked when the queen mother reached the car. “Yes, she and your cousin have taken quite a liking to each other,” Ramonda raised an eyebrow. “You know me and Zoe will watch out for her,” Michael reassured. “I know, that is the only reason I’m letting her stay,” Ramonda answered.
“We’ll get her back to you safely later tonight. I promise,” The actor shoved his hands in his pocket and stepped back. “I guess we better get going then-”
“Wait,” Zoe walked out of the venue over to the car. “I didn’t get to kiss my babies goodbye,” the mother pouted. Michael laughed as T’Challa rolled his eyes. “Boy, don’t roll your eyes at me before they get stuck like that.” She slapped his chest before opening the car doors and kissing both of her toddlers.”
“Okay, we will swing by to pick them up after we get back. And you have everything packed for them right? You have Meluzmi’s inhaler, and enough clothes and replacement outfits? You got the earplugs too right? They hate heights and the sounds of the plane's engines when-”
“Zoe they will be fine. T’Challa reassured. “And if I don’t have it, you know my mother will make sure they get it. They will be fine. I can do this,” The king grabbed both of her hands and squeezed them gently. “I know, I know,” the young mother sighed, “This is just the longest I have been away from them ever and I’m nervous.” Michael moved up to wrap an arm around his wife’s waist and press a kiss to her forehead. “ Everything will be fine,” he soothed. “I know-”
“Then stop worrying,” T’Challa offered a sad smile, “You deserve this, to be happy, to have a break, to enjoy your honeymoon. You are an excellent mother Zoe, but they have a father too. So enjoy your break, enjoy your marriage. I promise they will be just as alive and happy as they are now when you get back from your trip.”
Zoe nodded and sighed, finally stepping back from the car with Michael at her side. “Okay, see you in three weeks. Thank you all again.”
“Anytime, you know I love my grandbabies.” Ramonda hugged the bride once more before closing the door facing the twins and taking a seat in the backseat next to them. “Ayy, Mike, it’s almost time for the garter toss,” Two of the groomsmen waved the couple over but T’Challa reached for Zoe’s hand. “Can we talk?”
Zoe nodded at her husband letting him know she was okay, he looked the king over once more before heading inside to watch from the doorway. “What’s up?”
“I just wanted you to know that you were right.”
“About what?” the bride squinted. “About deserving to be with someone who can say they love you in and out of the bedroom. You deserve someone who loves you out loud, and I’m glad you found it in Michael.”
Zoe smiled softly, “Thank you. I hope you find the same for yourself. We both deserve someone.”
“I think I already did but I kind of fucked it up...twice,” the king chuckled. “I’ll keep you updated on that front though.”
Zoe Iman nodded. T’Challa gestured to the doorway, “I think you better go though, your husband hasn’t stopped watching.” Zoe laughed, glancing over her shoulder at Michael who was, sure enough, watching from the door. “Yeah... Goodbye T’Challa.” Zoe pulled the king in for a hug before placing a kiss on his cheek.
“Goodbye, Zoe… I love you,” he sighed once she had walked off out of earshot.

is an exciting night for Casey, as her brother; Dan is finally tying the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Marie. The wedding is beach themed as it was held somewhere near her parent's beach house that was rented for the event. The wedding is starting in less than 20 minutes, as all of the bridesmaid and groomsmen are getting in position. Casey is standing with Marie, as she was picked to be one of her bridesmaid for the wedding. It is an honor for her, as she always looked at Marie as the big sister she never had.
The time has arrived, as the ceremony has begun. The orchestra had played a rendition of a remix from the couple's favorite tracks. Casey felt herself getting anxious as she makes her way to the altar, with a huge amount of fear that she will fall on her face, with an eternity of embarrassment for her. After the dreadful walk, she managed to maintain her position without failing. The ceremony was perfect as she felt teared up from their vows. Casey  suddenly lost in thought, as she suddenly feels uncertain about her own future. Every year, she is closer to death and she figures that turning 25 would stamp her with a soulmate, but nothing happened. Seeing her brother get married makes her feel a pang of sadness in her as she fears that her luck in love is fading. The cheers from the crowd pulled her out of her trance, as they finally said their 'I do's' which makes her smile widely at the scene.
After the ceremony ended, the reception had begun as Casey was seated among the bridesmaid. The first dance between Dan and Marie is different than all the ones she saw online, it was led by a high school musical soundtrack that ended with 'Billie Jean' making the crowd laugh throughout the whole commotion. They were happy as they gaze into one another's eyes before the song ended. Casey grabs a glass of wine, as an announcement was made.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom have a surprise for all our singles out there! There will be an envelope awaits you, with your mystery dance partner. Time to partner up and mingle, maybe; someday you will thank me. Now, let's dance the night away people!" The DJ said before he plays the first song.
As the dance floor was filled with people, Casey lets out a sigh as she is known as a part of the singles, until she saw the envelope placed on top of her plate. She took the letter and opened it carefully, as her anxiety rise. She silently pleads that her dance partner is not going to be a creep, or maybe someone who is old in general. After what felt like an eternity, she manages to open the letter, the name was revealed to be.
Bryce Lahela
She nods at the name, as she tries to make a few guesses on his origins based on his name. She stared at the paper, and she saw a fine print below the name.
PS- He is a great guy, promise! And, he is not a creep. Double promise, enjoy! ;) – Dan and Marie.
Her eyes went wide as the man was set up by both his brother and Marie. She takes a deep breath and stands from the table eyeing the dance floor which is filled with random people dancing with their anonymous partners. Casey eyes the environment around her, trying to spot her partner among the huge amount of guests… After 5 minutes of searching, she has given up finding the man. She was about to get back sulking at the buffet when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around and saw a man in a lavender tuxedo is looking at her with a smile.
'Casey Valentine?'
I nod and asked.
'Bryce Lahela?'
He nods as Casey felt herself let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.
'May I have this dance?' He holds out his hand to her, as she took it. As she makes her way to the dance floor, she caught sight of Dan and Marie giving her a thumbs up causing her to blush. The song was playing, as the words around it projected the next events perfectly.
They both danced quietly as Casey felt a pang of nervousness inside of her. Bryce clears his throat in an attempt to start a conversation. The moon is shining bright above them, as it was something out of a movie. We get it almost every night when that moon is big and bright
'Penny for your thoughts?' Bryce asked as an attempt to start a conversation.
'I always get nervous around people, and I am terrified that I will trip or embarrassed myself in front of a beautiful man like you…' Casey felt herself redden at the fact she just let her thoughts out in public.
Bryce founds himself laughing at her,
'Don't be embarrassed, I get that a lot.' Bryce stated as he felt her being a bit more comfortable in his arms.
'Oh yeah, prove it!' She replied with full enthusiasm and curiosity behind his story. Both of them ended up trading stories with one another, as they seemed to enjoy one's company as they started to move in circles around the dance floor. It's a supernatural delight, everybody's dancing in the moonlight.
The whole room around them lets out a cheer as Uptown Funk was played in the background bringing people in their zone as they boogie the night away. Casey's eyes went wide as her favorite dance bop was playing, it was an overrated tune but she couldn't care less. She starts dancing crazily, as Bryce held her in his arms. She felt tense from the sudden contact, he immediately said, 'don't worry, I won't bite' making her felt a shiver down her spine. As she felt herself dive into the music, her green eyes met his brown ones. They gazed into one another, feeling the beat as the whole world around them disappear. Everybody here is out of sight, They don't bark and they don't bite.
'Cmon Bryce, show me your go-to move! You need to let loose tonight, it is a party!' Casey yelled across the music as she felt himself stiffen during the middle of the song.
'You know what, let's do this.' Bryce said as he took off his tie and starts to move in the beat as Casey laughs at his antics such as an attempt on doing the single ladies dance. They keep things loose they keep it tight, everybody's dancing in the moonlight.
As the song ends, Casey felt herself smile widely at the events that happened. She felt herself feeling happy for once, and she felt happy on the dance floor with a man who was once a stranger, that somehow had turned into a friend. Perhaps, someday more.
"I guess our dance had come to an end, unfortunately.' Bryce said with a hint of sadness in his voice.
"I wish we can continue it," Casey replies with an obvious amount of sadness which caused a small smile to appear as an idea strikes him.
"Well, I have an idea. If you want, we could go for a walk because I really don’t want this night to end." Bryce suggests as Casey felt herself blush at his words.
"The night seems beautiful to be wasted, I will see you at the shore," Casey said as Bryce placed a small kiss on her knuckles.
"I will see you soon," Bryce said as he disappears to the crowd making his way to Dan. Her eyes never leaving him.
'Looks like someone is in love...' a voice rang into her ears as she turns her head meeting Marie's who is smiling widely at her.
"I guess, I feel something. But, I wouldn't call it love." yet. She said as she hugs Marie and thanking them for everything as the cake cutting ceremony is about to start.
After the reception is over, Casey makes her way to the shore where she is meeting Bryce. The beach is peaceful as the night grows. Only the sound of waves could be heard from afar. She took a seat on the sand as she waits for him. Her memories from the last few hours had flooded back in her mind, the way they danced with full comfort and the way he makes her laugh, makes her feel butterflies in her stomach. She didn't notice a presence beside her, as Bryce took a seat on the sand as well. Both of them are staring at the empty beach.
'Hi,'
'Hey.'
'How was your night stranger?'
Casey lets out a smile.
'I think I had the most amazing night, and it's not even my own wedding.'
'Care I ask the reason for your satisfaction?' Bryce said as he mimics a robot voice which made them both burst in laughter.
"It is maybe because someone has promised me a dance during this fine evening?' Casey said as she dusts off the sand and takes her hand out towards Bryce.
"In fact I did, care to be my dance partner once again Miss Valentine?" Bryce extends his arms as she took it with a smile.
'Yes, you may Mr. Lahela." She replies as they started to dance in circles with a song that they knew all too well. The night fades away around them, as they were the only ones left on earth. The light from the moon becomes their spotlight, whilst being in one another's arms. They both felt happy and somehow it feels like home, where it is warm and bright where it is just right. Dancing in the moonlight, everybody's feeling warm and bright.
'Did I mention, how beautiful you looked tonight?' Bryce said as his eyes fall on to her. The look of adoration and love was present in his eyes.
'Oh yeah, I thought you were the beautiful one here.' Casey raised an eyebrow at his comment which made him chuckle in amusement.
'We both can be beautiful, can we?'
'Yes, we can.' Casey replies as she beamed at him, feeling pretty bright about the future.
It's such a fine and natural sight, everybody's dancing in the moonlight.
THE END

Comb
The day had finally arrived. An elegant white dress hugged Kairi’s frame, and she ran a brush through her hair as Aqua dug several bobby pins out of their little container.
Hair, makeup, nails, clothes. So much prep to do, but it would all be worth it in the end.
She paused to tap her cheek. Let’s see, after this, I still have pictures with the bridesmaids, and then—
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts, and Aqua sprung up to get it. She’d probably been expecting one of the other bridesmaids, the mother of the bride, anyone but the groom himself.
“Sora, what are you doing here?!” she scolded, positioning herself to block the view of Kairi. “It’s bad luck to—”
Sora pointed at his face and grinned. “Don’t worry, I’ve got a blindfold on. Can’t see the bride if my eyes are covered, right?”
Sure enough, a bright red cloth was tied around his eyes, his messy hair sticking up every which way in its adamant refusal to be tamed by anything or anyone.
“Speaking of which, where is she?” he asked. Lifting his hands, he felt the doorframe, Aqua’s arm, and then the air, stumbling around in an adorably earnest fashion as he entered the room.
“Over here,” Kairi called from her seat by the mirror, and his expression softened into a heartwarming smile. Aqua steered him in the right direction, and he made his way over to Kairi with minimal bumps and collisions.
Kneeling beside her, he reached for her face. She caught his hand and guided it to her cheek, and his touch was tender and gentle as he caressed it.
“You look amazing,” he whispered.
“I thought you weren’t looking,” she teased.
He found her hand and kissed it. “I don’t have to.”
She knew he was telling the truth. He’d already warned her that once he saw her, he was going to start crying. No tears right now, so that meant his heart was filling in for what his eyes couldn’t see yet.
“You don’t look half bad yourself, handsome.” It was true. He looked great in his tux, and she took a moment to smooth his lapels and straighten his bowtie.
He smiled and fumbled around in his pocket for something. “Have you done your hair yet?”
“Nope. Aqua was just about to—”
“Good.” He pulled out a small comb. The teeth were delicate and silvery white, and the top piece had an elaborate design of seashells and paopu fruit and ocean waves painted on it.
“It’s beautiful,” Kairi murmured. The light reflected off its iridescent surface, and she ran her fingers over it.
“It was my mom’s,” Sora said. “She wore it for her wedding, and she wants you to have it.”
Kairi tried very hard to fight the lump in her throat. Forget Sora crying, she wasn’t sure she was even going to make it to the ceremony without turning on the waterworks.
“What?” he said softly.
“You,” she said, bopping his nose and giggling as he started. “Are you trying to make me cry?”
He grinned. “And ruin all your makeup? I know better than to do that.” He stood, and Aqua came to the rescue to guide him behind Kairi.
His hands found their way into her hair, and he spent a few moments running his fingers through it and massaging her scalp.
“I did brush my hair just now, you know,” she said, grinning.
He leaned over in the general direction of where he thought her ear was. Kairi stifled another giggle at how off he was. “I know,” he said. “Just making sure you got all the tangles out.”
Playing with her hair was one of his favorite things to do. They’d spent countless lazy afternoons on the beach with him running his fingers through it and coming up with as many elaborate new hairstyles for her as he could.
He’d gotten so good at it, in fact, that even though he was blindfolded, he only needed some help from Aqua to get a basic French twist in place. After that came the comb, which was carefully tucked into the updo to hold it all together. Aqua could take care of the rest – the fringe of curls that Kairi wanted to frame her face, as well as the bobby pins and hairspray to keep everything secure.
“There,” he said, bending down to kiss her cheek and finding her ear instead. “Better go back before Riku realizes I—”
She grabbed his face and guided his mouth to hers. He hummed his surprise before melting into the kiss, and his hands fumbled around for a moment until he finally managed to weave them into her hair.
When the kiss had ended, he took a few deep breaths and reached out a hand to steady himself. “I thought – I thought we were gonna wait for that until later.”
“Are you objecting?”
“No.” He kissed her nose. “Not at all. In fact—”
At the sight of the deep red shade his lips had turned, she giggled.
“What?” he asked, his tone curious, and she knew the exact look that must be in his eyes right now.
“My lipstick’s all over your mouth now.” She grabbed a tissue and tried to wipe it away. “Sorry about that.”
He gave her a big, stupid grin, like they were still teenagers who had just been caught making out in the bushes. Glancing in the mirror, the slight outline of his lips rested on her nose now, too.
Oops. Sorry, Aqua.
He brought his hand to her cheek. “I wish I could see you right now.”
She put her hand over his and gave him a sympathetic smile. She was looking forward to the moment he could finally see her walking down the aisle, too.
“Sora, there you are.” Riku strode into the room and brought them back to reality. After exchanging an amused glance with Aqua, he grabbed Sora’s arm and hauled him towards the door.
“That’s enough canoodling with the bride for now. You’ll get to do a lot more of that later on.”
Sora’s hand went to his eyes. “Riku, hang on—”
Sure enough, the blindfold was slipping off. Aqua came to the rescue again. She clamped her hand over his eyes just in the nick of time.
Kairi could only laugh again as Aqua and Riku dragged him out of the room. Looking back in the mirror, she turned her head this way and that, hoping to catch a glimpse of the comb.
“Here,” Aqua said, holding up a small mirror so Kairi could see the back of her head. The comb looked nice, its pearly surface a perfect match for her dress. Like they were always meant to go together.
As she finished her hair and touched up her makeup, she kept thinking about the moment Sora would see her for the first time in her wedding dress.
The reality, as it turned out, was much better than her imagination.
It was much better by far.
@mzelle-lazuli, you requested fluff of Sora playing with Kairi’s hair, so here you go! I dedicate this story to you. Think of it as a thank you for all your lovely comments. Also, I hope this serves as some nice relief to all my readers from the current angst train going on in Those Who Dreamed.
One last thing: I realized that as of yesterday, I have been posting fanfiction for an entire year now. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the support I’ve gotten from my readers, reviewers, and commenters. I just wanted to say a quick thank you to you all because your encouragement means the world to me.
