I love how you have Nidhiki and Lariska which is this almost romantic and sexy aesthetic between two skilled badasses… But then Birth of a Dark Hunter has to accommodate Krekka, whom Nidhiki is more widely known to be partnered with, and Krekka sorta just clumsily crashes into the narrative while knocking over the tone. So you’ve got Nidhiki anticipating his emotional connection and bond with Lariska and then all of a sudden he’s dragged into the indignity of this Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain dingus.

Pictured: Krekka coming in to crash the DaggerSpider dynamic with his own contributions. I wonder if Nidhiki ever had a nightmare like this.

I've seen people criticise this exchange in light of romance not being canon by this point in the story. And yeah, Lariska's line is a variant on "You say that to all the girls", which is usually used in a flirty context. So some people take it as Lariska interpreting Hakann's reaction as flirty, or even Lariska straight up flirting with Hakann.

There is another explanation that makes more sense in-universe though.

If this is the case, then females are likely dominant in Skakdi society and as a result the males are probably socialised to be more respectful or even subservient to females, even of other species. Skakdi probably have a reputation for this, and to someone like Lariska, who might come from a species/culture where gender isn't a big deal, it may come across as quaint or silly.

There's other evidence of this in the other Piraka's interactions with female characters.

There's also Thok complimenting and trying to recruit Hahli:

Even this exchange between Vezok and Dalu. Vezok isn't nearly as dismissive or mocking of Dalu as the other Piraka are to other Matoran:

This is probably the sort of advice young female Skakdi are given, and Vezok treats Dalu as though she is more than capable of amassing an army and conquering the island. (He does slam Dalu with an attack and vaguely threaten her after that, yes, but only once she's moved out of close combat range)

There's also this from Vezon...

Though that might be more to do with Vezon's intermittent self-preservation instincts deciding to kick in... for once.

Headcanons about Lariska's species since there's not really much about them in canon.

They have crests, the purpose of which is unknown.

Due to how their heads are shaped, their mask-ports are on their chests.

Their flesh is poisonous, and most members of the species have brightly-coloured and/or high-contrast armour to dissuade predator Rahi from eating them. [meta note: the leftmost one is based on a Blue-Ringed Octopus]

They were designed by the same Great Being who created the Vortixx, hence the similar head-shape.

Their limbs use more versatile joints than other MU beings, making them more flexible and capable of intricate feats of acrobatics.

Their ears can pivot to show their emotions; the further forwards the ears are rotated, the more relaxed they are.

POLLRUNNER'S NOTE: Wu Zetian (Iron Widow) and Wu Zetian (IRL History) are in this bracket as separate characters.

Wu Zetian:

So she spends the entire like first quarter of the book fantasizing about killing this dude who killed her sister, and then she does it! She murders him! In her world, boys and girls get paired up to fight in these giant super cool machines, but because of the way the system works, it kills the girl a lot of the time. But Zetian totally turned that around! Then she gets paired with the strongest fighter in the army in hopes that he'll kill her, but she doesn't and actually ends up in a polycule with him. Also, she's based off of the only female emperor in Chinese history.

Lariska:

over a ten-year story, she appears in a few scenes. she is the main writer's favourite character. the first time we see her, the universe's mob boss (who is also her boss. she is part of the lego alien robot microbe mafia) is going out into the field and leaves her (temporarily) in charge. she enters the scene by backflipping and tells him that when she kills him, he will see it coming. she is part of the child-friendly suicide squad. one of her arms is fully robotic (for context, most characters from bionicle are a mix of metallic armour-y bits and organic tissue). i mean FINE i guess this is propaganda. live laugh love lariska

Badass knife lady who kicks others asses. Is implied to be a decent person in spite of being part of basically a mercenary mafia. One of the few characters in the series that don't fit to the rigid good evil spectrum.
