Magic Lantern Shows: The first step towards home video entertainment.
Entertainment via screens has become the dominant form of entertainment for many. But before we got to the age of HD TVs and smartphones, people had to come up with clever ways to entertain themselves. A perfect example is in Erkki Huhtamo’s essay "Screenology '’ where he discusses magic lantern shows. He writes “Early lantern shows, often given by itinerant lanternists in private homes, had an intimate quality. The audience frequently gathered around the lanternist. The shows were essentially storytelling events illustrated by images and accompanied by a hurdy gurdy or some other musical instrument” (Huhtamo). I find this quote very interesting because it shows how creative earlier forms of entertainment were. These shows mainly consisted of showmen displaying still images in a projector and telling the story verbally along with the use of music and various sound effects. While it is very primitive it shows how much imagination was required to make things entertaining.
The quote also mentions that these shows were done in people’s homes, which would make this one of the earliest forms of visual home entertainment. I can only imagine what this was like for the people back in the 17th century. We are spoiled with movies and TV shows that have given us massive visual spectacles that are backed with the power of full orchestras to further enhance the drama of a story. But with these massive advancements in technology, It makes it really hard to imagine a world where these projects aren’t the norm. It was probably mind blowing at the time to not only have this technology, but to have it brought to you in the comfort of your own home as well. In hindsight, it really shows how much we take for granted when it comes to visual media.
This quote also brings to mind how current and future generations most likely will never experience seeing technological jumps like going from the magic lantern show to motion pictures. Today technology will most likely just get more advanced in more surface level ways like allowing more visual detail for special effects and making previously difficult effects easier to pull off. But imagine being around to see the ideas of magic lantern shows evolve into the first motion pictures. It probably felt like a magic trick seeing these still pictures suddenly come to life on a large screen. So, while I am thankful for how advanced modern motion pictures have become, I think the magic lantern show should still be respected as one of the first steps to get to where we are today.

About time movie schedule

Popular magic lantern presentations included phantasmagoria, mechanical slides, Henry Langdon Childe's dissolving views and his chromatrope. The magic lantern was used to illustrate lectures, concerts, pantomimes and other forms of theatre. At the main theatre, with 500 seats, lanternists would make good use of a battery of six large lanterns running on tracked tables to project the finely detailed images of extra large slides on the 648 square feet screen. When it opened in 1838, The Royal Polytechnic Institution in London became a very popular and influential venue with all kinds of magic lantern shows as an important part of its program. The eerie surroundings, with a graveyard and ruins, formed an ideal location for his ghostraising spectacle. In 1799, Étienne-Gaspard "Robertson" Robert moved his Phantasmagorie show to an abandoned cloister near the Place Vendôme in Paris. Some forms of theatrical entertainment would involve the screening of moving images and can be regarded as precursors of film. Movie theatres stand in a long tradition of theaters that could house all kinds of entertainment. The use of the word "theatre" to mean a "building where plays are shown" dates from the 1570s in the English language. The term "theater" comes from the Old French word "theatre", from the 12th century and ".directly from Latin theatrum 'play-house, theater stage spectators in a theater'", which in turn came from the Greek word "theatron", which meant "theater the people in the theater a show, a spectacle", literally "place for viewing". The etymology of the term "movie theater" involves the term "movie", which is a "shortened form of moving picture in the cinematographic sense" that was first used in 1896 and "theater", which originated in the ".late 14c., open air place in ancient times for viewing spectacles and plays".

A screening room is a small theater, often a private one, such as for the use of those involved in the production of motion pictures or in a large private residence. Specific to North American term is the movies, while specific terms in the UK are the pictures, the flicks and for the facility itself the flea pit (or fleapit). In the countries where those terms are used, the word "theatre" is usually reserved for live performance venues.Ĭolloquial expressions, mostly applied to motion pictures and motion picture theaters collectively, include the silver screen (formerly sometimes sheet) and the big screen (contrasted with the smaller screen of a television set). The latter terms, as well as their derivative adjectives "cinematic" and "kinematic", ultimately derive from Greek κινῆμα, κινήματος (kinema, kinematos)-"movement", "motion". However, some US theaters opt to use the British spelling in their own names, a practice supported by the National Association of Theatre Owners, while apart from Anglophone North America most English-speaking countries use the term cinema / ˈ s ɪ n ɪ m ə/, alternatively spelled and pronounced kinema / ˈ k ɪ n ɪ m ə/. In the US, theater has long been the preferred spelling, while in the UK, Australia, Canada and elsewhere it's theatre. In some jurisdictions, movie theaters can be licensed to sell alcoholic drinks.Ī movie theater may also be referred to as a movie house, film house, film theater, cinema or picture house. Movie theaters often sell soft drinks, popcorn, and candy, and some theaters sell hot fast food. The audience members often sit on padded seats, which in most theaters are set on a sloped floor, with the highest part at the rear of the theater. The largest theater complexes, which are called multiplexes-a concept developed in Canada in the 1950s - have up to thirty screens.
Tumblr media
In the 2010s, most movie theaters had multiple screens. The smallest movie theaters have a single viewing room with a single screen. Since the 2010s, most movie theaters have been equipped for digital cinema projection, removing the need to create and transport a physical film print on a heavy reel.Ī great variety of films are shown at cinemas, ranging from animated films to blockbusters to documentaries. Since the 1970s, subwoofers have been used for low-pitched sounds. The film is projected with a movie projector onto a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium while the dialogue, sounds, and music are played through a number of wall-mounted speakers.
Tumblr media
Some movie theaters, however, are operated by non-profit organizations or societies that charge members a membership fee to view films. Most, but not all, theaters are commercial operations catering to the general public, who attend by purchasing a ticket. A movie theater ( American English), cinema ( British English), or cinema hall ( Indian English), also known as a picture house, the pictures, picture theatre, the silver screen, or the movies, is a building that contains auditoria for viewing films (also called movies) for entertainment.

Powdered unicorn horn was once thought to cure melancholy. What carries the hurt is never the wound    but the red garden sewn by the horn as it left--and she left. I am rosing,    blooming absence, its brilliant alarum. Brodsky said, Darkness restores what light cannot-- repair. You thrilled me--opened to the comb. O, wizard, O, wound. I want the ebon bull and the moon--    I’ve come for the honeyed horn. Queen Elizabeth traded a castle for a single horn.    Surrender to the kingdom in my hands-- army of touch marching upon the alcazar    of your thighs like bright horns.
I arrive at you--half bestia, half feast.    Tonight we harvest the luxed forest of Caderas, name the darkful fruit    spicing our mouths, separate sweet from thorn. Lanternist, in your wicked palm,    the bronzed lamp of my breast. Strike the sparker-- take me with tremble. Into your lap    let me lay my heavy horns. I fulfilled the prophecy of your throat,    loosed in you the fabulous wing of my mouth-- red holy-red ghost. I spoke to god,    returned to you feathered, seraphimed and horned. Our bodies are nothing if not places to be had by,    as in, God, she has me by the throat, by the hip bone, by the moon. God,    she has me by the horn.
