Eduard Stellmacher, Art Nouveau ceramic vase with bats designed for RStK (Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel). 1900s.
The bat motif, an extremely unusual and highly evocative image for the period. The bat has the highest rate of homosexuality among mammals and their sexuality was first studied in 1895 by Raymond Rollinat and Édouard Louis Trouessart (French). The image of a bat became a symbol of homosexuality. (x)

In 1682, the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle tried to claim the Mississippi for France and establish a colony there. In the end, everything went wrong and the last remaining ship, La Belle, fell victim to a mutiny and sank a short time later. Now the wreck of the Belle was found a few years ago and among them bones that now reveal her very astonishing secret of origin. Very interesting article that is definitely worth reading.

Godless would've been so much more fun and interesting if the story was actually just about a town mostly ran by women in the 1800s. instead the story we got feels like something we've seen before.. honestly the show is a big wasted opportunity..
