"I dream of a life made only of first loves and lasting loves." - Frédéric, L’Amour l’après-midi (1972)
People who know me, probably know of my appreciation for french films. I watched L’Amour l’après-midi yesterday and started musing about marriage, love and passion. Many people think that it is "normal", when marriages lose passion or appreciation for the other, but I do not agree with that sentiment. I'm of the opinion, that couples need to stay playful and keep the fire alife. Marriage is not something that should be connected to the loss of passion and love, but rather with the start of a circle in which the rekindling of passion is fundamental. My husband and I married young- I was 20, he was 27 - and we fell for the lies of modern society, succumbing to wrong priorities and nearly destroying our marriage in the process. God saved us and our marriage, leading us to a whole new life. We started to prioritize each other again, and our love turned from a candle in the background to a bonfire on the beach. We are secure in God, ourselves and each other. The passion is greater than it ever was, although we were gifted with two children, that can make time alone a rarity. We don't love each other because we are married and have to. It is not a love of obligation - it is a love grown out of our deepest selves. We share values, humor, attraction and ambitions. Marriage is not a prison - it is the greatest gift, right after Faith. Do not fall for the idea, that marriage and passion are incompatible. Passion belongs in marriage and whoever has lost it, must dedicate himself to capture it once more.

“I feel their seductive power without giving into it. This doesn’t estrange me from Helene. Far from it. I tell myself [that] these passing beauties are simply an extension of my wife’s beauty. They enrich her beauty and receive some of hers in return. She’s the guarantee of the world’s beauty, and vice versa. When I embrace Helene, I embrace all women.”
