kun - 钱锟 (qían kūn)

挪移 (núo yì) - this is a pun off the phrase 乾坤大挪移, which is a martial arts system and a bit of a meme. it’s pronounced qían kūn dà núo yí, and since the first two characters are pronounced like kun’s name, fans used this phrase to generate a lot of nicknames.

小挪 (xîao núo) - little nuo. see above. the dà in qían kūn dà núo yì means “big”, so fans play off this and call him little nuo

旦旦 (dàn dàn) - pun off the chinese word for new year’s day, 元旦节 (yúan dàn jíe), which is kun’s birthday

锟哥 (kūn gē) - gē means older brother. you can tack it on to the end of a name to show respect, and on a huya live, kun revealed that even people more senior and older than him call him kūn gē, so now everybody calls him that

ten - 李永钦 (lí yông qīn)

啊疼 (a téng) - téng sounds like ten, ah is an affectionate prefix you can put before someone’s name

昀昀 (yún yún) - how you say winwin in chinese. this character also means sunshine, so his nickname also means sunny 🥰

董老师 (dông lâo shī) - teacher dong. in chinese, you add “teacher” after someone’s name of they’re an expert in the field or a respected person

董老板 (dông lâo bân) - boss dong. in casual conversation, you refer to someone as a boss to put respect on their name

董花花 (dông hūa hūa) - dong flower 🌸 . idk where it comes from but it’s so cute 😭

xiaojun - 肖德俊 (xīao dé jūn)

铁块儿 (tîe kùaier) - piece of iron. not sure where this comes from tbh but his fans call themselves miners

铁茉莉 (tîe mò lì) - iron jasmine. referencing his princess party costume.

俊俊 (jūn jūn) - self explanatory

小龙 (xîao lóng) / 恐龙 (kông lóng) - dinosaur or little dino

hendery - 黄冠亨 (húang gùan hēng)

黄瓜 (húang gūa) - cucumber. c-fans call him this because huanggua sounds like his mandarin name, huang guanheng

王冠享 (wáng gùan xîang) - this is a meme from when lucas misspelled his name in dream plan, and because lucas thought his surname was “wang” instead of “huang” at first

羊崽 (yáng zâi) - sheep kid

羊羊 (yáng yáng) - sheep, pronounced the same as yangyang’s name

养羊 (yâng yáng) - yangyang with the tones changed to pronounce it in a cute/affectionate way

刘狼狼 (líu láng láng) - liu wolf wolf. this is a newer one that c-fans comment under pictures of yangyang where he looks very charismatic/sexy

Here’s a list of random things that tickle my funny bone for no reason in the Kyoshi novels

(as a Mandarin speaker)

Horse stance. THIS BITCH DESERVES THE TOP SPOT SO HERE GOES. I somehow did not make this connection until like I’m almost all the way through the book, but 扎马步 (zhā mǎ bù) or if you take the literal meaning of characters “poke horse step” is literally so well known it’s insane. I’m talking one of the first training/fighting stance that comes to a Chinese person’s mind when u mention kung fu/combat training in general well known so I rly dunno how it slipped my mind for an entire book

this particular stance is always a lil funny to me bc of the way it’s phrased in Chinese; with the 扎 “poke”, the intention is to convey a planting & sinking, steadying of the stance that’s just also funny af to me

so imagine sth u find a lil silly & funny fully becoming a flirtatious & romantic code specific to the main characters of the story? hilarity ensued; rip my friend who had to listen to my scream-laughing

Jianzhu, the architect, his name is literally pinyin for building (建筑 jiàn zhù); imagine naming ur kid Building Smith. No wonder he’s such an uptight type A

the name of Jesa’s (Kyoshi’s mom) sky bison, Longyan / 龙眼 (lóng yǎn), while directly translates to “dragon eye”, also happens to be the Chinese word for Longan fruit (which like Lychee, has cloudy, white/clear-ish flesh surrounding a dark, round pit)

Rangi’s name in the Chinese translation of the book is 燃姬 (rán jī), which itself is a basic sound translation, but these characters mean “lady on fire” or “burning lady” this is kinda cute as heck 4 me for some reason????? lil furnace lady Rangi makes me soft

…that brings us to Rangi’s mom Hei-Ran, someone who we know can be cold and calloused in getting sh*t done with some shady days in the academy, & her name may reflect that. her name could be these two characters 黑燃 (hēi rán), which translates to “black burn” or “dark burn”. talk abt obvious characteristic here; nothing more obvious than ur name amirite???

…then again it could also be 黑兰 (hēi lán, “Black Orchid”) which tbh I kinda like better bc it’s more likely to be used as a name; AGAIN, no one wants to name their kid “black burn” it really doesn’t sound as cool as you’d think

SO! After clues from the comments (thank u @taare-writes!) and help I outsourced from TikTok — Hei-Ran’s name actually could be 혜란 in Korean !! also when I put this in the translator I used, the corresponding Mandarin it gave me was 蕙兰 (hùi lán), which is a specific type of orchid (boat orchid I believe?) and SUCH A PRETTY NAME oh my

the term used for the outlaws daofei, is literally just 盗匪 (dào fěi) “thieves/bandits”; this especially tickles my friend (who’s also reading these novels) so I gotta include it for her ;))))

the daofei’s secret gathering spot next to a lake in the mountains, Hujiang, could be 湖江 (hú jiāng) “lake river” or 湖将 (hú jiāng) which if u squint at it could mean “just by the lake”. this is fun bc it’s possible the author just flipped the saying 江湖 (jiāng hú), which while directly translates to “river lake”, has a much broader & meaningful use often in 武侠 (wǔ xiá, if u know u know, but if u don’t you can think of it as samurai or traveling knight but CHINESE) lore: it is used to refer to the world of action, thrills, and adventure walked by these warriors. It’s p cool to me lmao

oh and the Lei Tai the daofei’s fight on? Just 擂台 (lèi tái) “fighting stage”, same thing as the ring in boxing but doesn’t only reference one specific type of fight

Yun’s name is p simple & straight forward, probably just 云 (yún, “cloud”); it’s also an actual last name and I know someone from Highschool with this last name :)))

While Kyoshi obviously has Japanese origins, the kanji corresponding to きょし is 虚子. Japanese kanji have their origins in Chinese characters, and in this case these two kanji can mean “child of the void” (虚 xū “the void / the lack of something” 子 zǐ “child / kid”); pretty fucking metal name if u ask me

Lao Ge, the human alias of the bloodthirsty spirit in Kyoshi’s gang, could just be 老哥 (lǎo gē) “old brother” which is equivalent of just bro

… it’s real name, Tieguai, could be 铁怪 (tiě guài) “iron monster” or 铁拐 (tiě guǎi) “iron crutch”, which both kinda make sense??? given its monstrous tendencies and ancient origins

the green emerald burial sword Tagaka carried with her, jian, literally is just 剑 (jiàn) “sword”. Yes they really went you know what? we gon call it a sword sword

speaking of weapons, the dao broadsword? same thing. 刀 (dāo) literally means “broadsword”. broadsword broadsword hehe

what I find interesting abt this whole weapons naming is that technically when u picture a broadsword, it falls under the umbrella classification of sword (can someone who’s first culture ain’t Chinese confirm this??? thanks); though for Chinese ppl, 剑 (jiàn, “sword”) and 刀 (dāo, “broadsword”) are completely different beasts

basically dao & jian to us r like tigers and wolves when broadswords & swords r like tigers and lions (both in the felidae family)

where this info kinda becomes relevant is bc knives are also translated as 刀 (yeah the one for “broadsword”), and the way ppl know which type of sharp instrument you mean depends on the context. if ur carrying ur dao on ur back (like in the novels) it’s broadsword; if ur looking for a dao to prep dinner with it’s probably a knife unless u really have the urge to chop spinach with a broadsword

the Yellow Scarf’s imprisoned (later freed then dropped) leader, Xu Ping An, has a weirdly ironic name; his name is likely 许平安 (xǔ píng ān), “wish for peace”. 许 (xǔ) can mean “making a wish” & is an actual Chinese last name; 平安 (píng ān) “peace” on the other hand can be & have been used as a name

slight tangent: there’s this Chinese tradition of including undesired characteristics in ur child’s name so they could avoid those things in life I know it’s probably not the tradition mom&dad Xu had in mind when they named him but it did kinda take effect

the design of Govener Te’s mansion complex, the traditional earth kingdom siheyuan design that Rangi mentioned? It’s an actual traditional courtyard’d household design. I’m not the expert on this but if ur interested u can just search siheyuan and read more abt it ! v fascinating

四合院 (sì hé yuàn) roughly translates to “four enclosing yard”, referring to how the structure of this type of housing consists of four sections of single floor housing (each a specific functional space) enclosing an exposed courtyard in the middle. You can still find some of these in Beijing; also these houses go for SO MUCH MONEY on the housing market bc 1. it’s p much a suburb home but in the city 2. CITY LAND 3. homes r just insanely expensive in a city like Beijing. so there’s a running joke that you’d say someone’s well-off by saying their family has a siheyuan

Oh jeez, TUT ch3 has officially reached 30+ pages. How?! At this rate, it’s gonna be like 40+/ 50+ or heaven forbid 60+ pages when it’s ready to be published. (For comparison, chapters 1-2 had averaged 20+ pages each.)

...At least I have a meaty update for you all to sink your teeth into, dear readers. My apologies for being a slow writer. Have another tiny sneak peek.

THE UNTOLD TALE - CH3 PREVIEW V

Descending from the night skies, Shen Yuan was an ethereal figure dressed in white, the thin garment fluttering behind him as he took the invisible steps down into the foreign dream realm. In the infinite cosmos, he saw nothing but stars. He cast a cursory look over the bioluminescent glow rippling under him with each tread, like an otherworldly procession, until his feet finally touched the earth.

The sound of wings flapping caught his attention. Shen Yuan twisted his head, seeing a majestic fènghuáng burst free from his own heavenly realm. The immortal phoenix soared high overhead, the five sacred colors—red, blue, yellow, white, and black—of its serrated tail feathers trailing behind it. A beautiful cry escaped its throat like a song.

A mighty roar shattered the night. The air pressure shifted. As though answering the phoenix’s call, a fierce and powerful lóng ascended from the dark depths of the realm, brackish water trembling off its black scales as it shot up to give chase after the fènghuáng’s vibrant plumage.

He watched their aerial dance in flight. Like yin and yang coming together, seeing their bodies twist and weave with one another in a harmonious sight made an intensity arise from the bottom of his heart.

The relief he felt was all-consuming. Every Chineseman knew of the dragon-and-phoenix metaphor of olden times. And if the mythical phoenix dared to take flight in this dream realm, in a demon’s home turf, surely it was an auspicious sign that Bing gē was not too far gone in darkness and corruption.

Feeling a renewed lightness on his feet, Shen Yuan went to follow.

The moment that the dragon surfaced, he had registered a faraway presence. It was a feeling of awareness, a slight prickling sensation of the scalp, making him feel self-conscious. He was hyper-aware that he was not alone. Even if Luo Binghe had been preoccupied, there was no way Protagonist A would not have sensed Protagonist B’s presence.

If Shen Yuan’s world had been representative of the heavenly air and water, much like the man himself Luo Binghe’s spirit root was aligned with the earth. His hand drifted back to his throat. The air was as arid as a desert. If memory served Shen Yuan correctly, Luo Binghe also had an innate affinity with the fire attribute. It’d been discovered during his time in the Endless Abyss arc once the demon seal had been broken, indicative of his high sensibility to the fire type of Qi.

Hearing noises behind him, he glanced over his shoulder. Leaves had sprung from the blackened branches, rustling in the wind. Moonlight dripped through the gaps in the canopy, reflecting mottled shadows. He had been following along a ravine, seeing where the running water led to. Presumably it would take him to wherever Luo Binghe—and Meng Mo?—wanted him to see.

Tucking the long strands of his hair behind an ear, he halted midstride when he heard, “...a...re...f...ul….”

He’d heard that voice before—that time at the pond, didn’t he? A woman’s voice. Like the babbling of a brook, as faint as the wind, with accents of a beauty hitherto unknown. He glanced at the waters, keeping his expression impassive.

Ping.

【Do exercise caution, Esteemed Host! One should not turn their back on an opponent.】

Shen Yuan was silent. He cast his gaze sidelong to the trees for a fleeting moment. As though addressing someone in the prevailing shadows, he purposely stated aloud, “I don’t make mistakes in recognizing talent. I have no intention of making Luo Binghe my opponent.”

Without another word, he resumed his stroll.

SOME NOTES:

[1] The dragon-and-phoenix symbolism is an age-old metaphor. “In ancient and modern Chinese culture, they can often be found in the decorations for weddings or royalty, along with dragons. This is because the Chinese considered the dragon-and-phoenix design symbolic of blissful relations between husband and wife, another common yang and yin metaphor. In some traditions it appears in good times but hides during times of trouble, while in other traditions it appeared only to mark the beginning of a new era.”

The eastern phoenix represents “power sent from the heavens to the Empress. If a phoenix was used to decorate a house it symbolized that loyalty and honesty were in the people that lived there. Or alternatively, a phoenix only stays when the ruler is without darkness and corruption (政治清明). The male is identified by five long serrated tail feathers or "filaments" (five being an odd, masculine, or yang number).” Eastern dragons in Chinese culture were often associated with the emperor.

Semana 15

Resumen de la semana

Esta semana ha ido todo como la seda: no me he acostado muy tarde ningún día (aunque tampoco he logrado ninguna vez mi meta de las 12), he avanzado mucho con mi libro, he hecho dos puntos de mi curso de CodeAcademy, he probado a cocinar nuevas recetas casi todos los días, he cumplidos todos los días con los puntos de mi plan para presentar a mis gatas (aunque Titi se sigue resistiendo a la nueva gata), he cumplido con mi plan de chino antes del fin de semana, etc. Todo bien. A ver si consigo seguir así un tiempo.

Esta semana ha tocado La Bella Durmiente. No ha ido mal.

Estoy un poco cansada de la serie y no me consigue enganchar, de momento seguiré con los videos de Mandarin Corner, que son más apropiados para mi nivel. He visto el video una vez tapando la traducción y otra vez para apuntarme el vocabulario que me ha parecido interesante o que no conocía. Próxima vez la veré una vez sin leer los subtítulos y otra vez con subtítulos sin traducción para ver cuánto entiendo.

Editar la redacción no fue difícil lo había dejado bastante pulido la semana anterior. Aunque no estoy muy contenta con el resultado, en vez de escribir y luego editar estuve editando a la vez que escribía y consulté el diccionario y wikipedia bastante a menudo, que no es lo ideal. Aunque era un tema con un vocabulario muy específico que no tengo. Ya está publicado en Journaly, cuando me lo corrijan lo publicaré ya corregido aquí.

Shinsei- Japanese for ‘Sacred’

Digou- actually Dìguó which is Chinese for ‘imperial’

Ge Ge- actually gē gē which is Chinese for ‘big brother’

shoji- wooden sliding doors with translucent paper on them.

Aisuru- Japanese for ‘loving’

Lóng- Chinese for ‘dragon’

bo fù- actually bó fù. Chinese meaning ‘Uncle’, specifically father's older brother

Bishamon- (Japanese god)Thought of as an armor-clad god of war or warriors and a punisher of evildoers. One of the Seven Lucky Gods.

di di- actually dì dì which is Chinese for ‘little brother’

Mu qīn- actually mǔqīn which is Chinese and a formal way to say ‘Mother’

Trung Quốc là nước đông dân nhất thế giới với khoảng 1,28 tỷ người. Trung Quốc là một trong những nền văn hóa tiêu biểu lâu đời nhất và giàu nhất trái đất với hơn 5000 năm tuổi. Khoảng 1/5 dân số thế giới hiện nay dùng một trong những thứ Tiếng Trung Quốc làm tiếng mẹ đẻ, khiến nó trở thành thứ tiếng đứng đầu thế giới về phương diện này. Trung Quốc là một trong những đối tác thương mại lớn của Mỹ và các nước khác. Trên thế giới, tiền tệ và ngôn ngữ của Trung Quốc cũng ngày càng có vị thế và phổ biến khắp thế giới. Vì vậy, Tiếng Trung là ngôn ngữ nên học.

Phương pháp học tiếng trung hiệu quả nhất:

Việc đầu tiên khi bắt tay vào học Tiếng Trung Quốc chính là viết. Nhiều người cho rằng Tiếng Trung có rất nhiều nét nên rất khó học. Nhưng chúng ta không nhất thiết phải ngồi học thuộc lòng 214 bộ chữ. Hãy bắt đầu từ những bộ chữ đơn giản nhất, viết lại nhiều lần chính là phương pháp tốt nhất để ghi nhớ chữ. Chúng ta chưa nên tập trung nhiều vào ngữ pháp mà hãy tập trung ghi nhớ càng nhiều chữ càng tốt. hãy bắt đầu từ những bộ chữ đơn giản nhất rồi từ từ mới tiếp cận với các bộ chữ phức tạp hơn.

Cũng giống như Tiếng Việt có 6 thanh điệu ( sắc, huyền, hỏi, ngã, nặng, thanh ngang), Tiếng Trung Quốc cũng có 4 thanh điệu. Điểm cần chú ý là tiếng Trung chủ yếu sử dụng âm vòm họng, tức là nơi quyết định 80% âm vực là vòm họng. Các sự thay đổi ở lưỡi và hàm răng chỉ mang yếu tố phụ trợ. Thời gian đầu luyện nói tiếng Trung, các bạn có thể tập nín thở trong khi nói, việc này làm giảm dần sự phụ thuộc vào âm mũi, và dần tăng độ tự nhiên cho âm vòm họng của các bạn. Bên cạnh đó, các bạn có thể tập thở 4 nhịp hoặc thở ngược để đạt được âm điệu hoàn chỉnh nhất.

Phát âm là một phần cực kì quan trọng trong quá trình học Tiếng Trung. Ngữ âm và ngữ điệu chuẩn chính là nền tảng cho việc học Tiếng Trung. Ngay từ đầu chúng ta nên luyện phát âm chuẩn từng từ chữ, từng câu một. Đây là yếu tố rất quan trọng giúp cho bạn giao tiếp tốt Tiếng Trung, nâng cao khả năng nghe và nói.

Tiếp theo là kĩ năng “nghe”. Hãy bắt đầu nghe Tiếng Trung bằng các đoạn hội thoại cơ bản nhất như chào hỏi, ăn uống…. mà bạn có thể tìm thấy rất nhiều trên internet. Nghe nhạc Trung với phụ đề cũng là cách bạn vừa học nghe, vừa giải trí. Xem phim có phụ đề Tiếng Trung để luyện cho tai mình nghe quen ngữ điệu, vừa luyện khả năng đọc tiếng Trung và khả năng phản xạ của bản thân.

Chịu khó học từ vựng là kinh nghiệm học Tiếng Trung tốt nhất. Càng có nhiều từ vựng, bạn càng dễ dàng thể hiện được ý kiến của mình. Nhưng với một hệ thống chữ tượng hình như tiếng Trung nhiều nét nhiều chữ khó nhớ vậy làm thế nào để nhớ được tiếng Trung? Hãy tạo niềm vui trong khi học tiếng Trung bằng cách tưởng tưởng đến những thứ liên quan đến nghĩa của từ. Ngoài việc học thêm từ mới, chúng ta nên ôn lại những từ vựng cũ. Vì chữ Trung Quốc là chữ tượng hình có rất nhiều nét, nên việc quên từ vựng là điều rất dễ hiểu. Hãy sử dụng những tờ giấy note lại những từ vựng liên quan đến cuộc sống hằng ngày và dán tại những chỗ tương ứng với nghĩa của từ để chúng ta dễ dàng thấy và nhớ từ.

Thay đổi phương pháp học Tiếng Trung thường xuyên để tránh sự nhàm chán trong quá trình học ngôn ngữ này. Ví dụ như bạn học từ vựng, nhưng hôm sau lại đọc báo, sách, thơ Tiếng Trung, hay học thuộc một bài hát,….
