KOTLC characters as medical professionals (human au)
Sophie:
Neurosurgeon. She was still considered a child prodigy, and was top of her class all throughout her school career, including medical school. After she graduated top of her class in medical school, she applied to a massive hospital in LA, thinking that would be the best place for her to just lay low, since it has so many people. She was wrong. Even though she had perfect grades, she still had to go through a lot of scut work and tedious cases before she was taken seriously. Soon, she performed an actually complicated surgery and the hospital decided they’d utilize her more after it was 100% successful. Remember how I said she didn’t get to lay low? Yeah. At one point, she is given the opportunity to operate on conjoined twins and (hopefully) separate their bodies. She knows this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a surgeon so she immediately accepts. That surgery is 100% successful as well. What Sophie didn’t anticipate was worldwide fame. She’s in news articles on papers and talked about on TV. Sophie’s getting so many job offers from around the world, and doesn’t plan on taking any of them, but she sees a hospital in England that looks perfect for her, and feels an urge to go there. So next thing you know Soph is in the same hospital as the rest of the gang.
Keefe:
Pediatrician. Such a Pediatrician. He loves taking care of the kiddos. And I feel like all of his patients were terrified of him like we usually are as kids, but by the end of their appointment they feel so comfortable. He's cracking jokes the whole time and asking them questions about their life. He's always looking for signs of abuse, too. He knows the signs of mental and physical abuse. I feel like he took extra psychology courses for that exact reason. He makes an effort to be friendly with the rest of the staff, especially the gang, who he now considers his best friends. Elwin vibes. Speaking of Elwin, he was Keefe's mentor. He wasn't all that interested in medicine as a career until he saw Elwin for a broken arm when he was a kid. Keefe mentioned to his parents that he wanted to be a doctor, and they were overjoyed that their son chose something so prestigious. So they started paying Elwin to mentor Keefe, and eventually Elwin feels more like family than his parents ever did. He went to medical school at a fairly small college just to tick off his parents. They wanted him to go to an Ivy League. When Sophie gets to the hospital he and the gang work at, he is immediately friendly and already has a small crush, because he's heard about how amazing and skilled she is. But he's too scared to flirt cause he doesn't wanna get reported to HR.
Fitz:
Ophthalmologist. If you don't know what that means, it's basically someone who treats your eyes. I don't know, maybe I think he'd do this because his eyes are always so emphasized throughout the series, or maybe I think this way because he's always secretly wanted to do this but Alden wanted him to become a neurosurgeon like the many Vackers before him and this is his way of breaking off from their legacy. Maybe. Anyways, he and Biana went to the same medical school. They are really eachothers only support systen at this point. They love that they get to be close to each other. Again, everyone in the gang works at the same hospital, and even though Fitz isn't a neurosurgeon, he still makes bank. And his family still isn't happy with him(save for Biana). But he learns to be okay with that, as he finds a new family within the gang. And then he sees news articles in the paper and hears mentions on TV about a woman named Sophie Foster and he's immediately intrigued. She's quite young for a doctor, let alone a neurosurgeon who's operated on conjoined twins. And THEN he learns she is transferring to the hospital he works at from America. He wants to talk to her, but doesn't want to seem weird. He wishes he had Keefe's confidence. They keep bumping into each other around the hospital, it happens at least once every day. And THEN they bump into each other at a book store. They kinda awkwardly exchange greetings and then start laughing. Sophie officially introduces herself to Fitz and Fitz does the same to her. They spend like the next hour chatting about books. Fitz is head over heels.
Biana:
ICU nurse. Biana can handle chaos like a boss. She likes the lack of routine in it. Biana never really had the rneurosurgeon expectation thrust upon her cause Fitz was supposed to be the Golden Child TM, but she's always been interested in medicine. So she goes to medical school for nursing and decides to go one step further for the ICU, because as I said, Biana likes the unexpectedness. She's fantastic at what she does. She's very professional in the workplace, but will go out for drinks with her colleagues. Especially the gang. I feel like she was thinking about becoming a doctor but really wanted to build financial stability for herself before she sought out higher education. Her parents aren't paying for anything, because she cut them off after0 they cut Fitz off. She's really happy with her occupation at this moment in time, though. She knows all about Fitz's crush on Sophie, and is actually the second person to introduce themselves to her. They become fast friends and Biana will not stop pestering Fitz to just make a move.
Dex:
Clinical pharmocologist. Because science. I think Dex grew up watching his dad do cool things pertaining to the study of the body, but quickly discovered he preferred pharmacology to biology by a long shot. He loves what he does. He has the best time at work. To him, the money and benefits are just added perks compared to getting to be in a lab all day. He doesn't really know about Sophie until she gets there, kind of. When she does get there he asks Biana about her and Biana's kind of like, 'how do you not know about her?' But still explains who Sophie is and Dex is just like 'cool' and moves back to his lab. But he meets Sophie at a lunch break one day and really enjoys her company. He likes that he can openly be a nerd about pharmacology around her, and that she is a good listener. Isn't really a huge part of the gang till Sophie comes along and brings Dex with her to everything. Anyways, Dex has created multiple medicines that have saved thousands of lives. His dream is to find the cure to cancer, and pretty much decoted his life to research an experiments about it. He only ever gets out of the house or lab anymore because Biana and Sophie drag him out.

Oh my god I just reread that and just to be clear Sophie is of age, she and the gang are all 18+. At the beginning it sounded like she was like 15 when she was working at the hospital. Nah I just emant she was really good at school.

So I’m late as shit for appreciation day but I figured the term ‘‘better late than never’’ can come in handy once again. Also now surprise! Unexpected compliments! I think that’s better than slightly-suspected ones tbh. The only good surprises.

Kotlc human au prom outfits :)
Don't mind me Nonsie just going to use all of the totally legit prom knowledge I definitely have (I always skip school dances) to answer this one! I've talked about young Sophie once before, so this time I'll do older human Sophie. As for the others...I have ideas :)
Sophie: She's very shy about all this but definitely isn't wearing a dress. But I don't think she'd have the confidence for a suit yet either, so somewhere in-between. Perhaps a formal romper? Simple cut, suitable for a formal environment, she's still covered, and it's not a big fancy dress. It's got a bit of a looser fit, maybe with a sash around the waist, probably a darker color so she doesn't stand out. Not sure exactly which color though--maybe a dark blue or a muted green. She's got her everyday jewelry and her hair is clipped out of her face on one side, but she didn't do anything else. Her makeup is so simple its unnoticable, probably subtle brown liner and mascara, maybe a lip gloss. It's comfortable
Fitz: He's got a classic full-blown suit in a navy blue, complete with a pocket square. Tempted to say he also has a pocketwatch with a chain. He's got a subtly patterned shirt underneath, i'm thinking stripes. His tie is slightly lighter color than the suit, and is slightly off in terms of how it's tied. He tried his best but continues to fiddle with it, and it's the only part of his appearance that reminds you he's actually a dork on top of being so Wonderboy.
Keefe: Floral shirt. 100%. He's got the bright colors and the buttons aren't all closed, which shows off his necklace--a delicate gold. It's only partially tucked into his pants, which look fancy but he wears them so casually. Going for that roguishly unstyled look. He's probably wearing rings as well. Biana might've joked about doing his makeup and he let her do it for the fun of it, so he's got smoky colored shadow and glossed lips to match the shirt. he's got no right looking so good with the chaos he causes
Biana: Her outfit is the closest to a ballgown, she goes all out. Even has a corset style bodice studded with beads forming swirling designs. I'm thinking either a deep purple or a gold color for the dress, and her hair is all down and curled, a simple jeweled clip on one side. She's got a statement lip and stunning highlight, wearing strappy heels that would be a hazard for anyone but her. The sleeves are off the shoulder and sheer, draping over her arms before cinching at the wrist.
Dex: he is embarrassed yet excited to be there, so his outfit is hidden under a hoodie until someone can convince him to take it off. He's got a slightly worn button down with a bowtie slightly askew. He's rolled back the sleeves and it's tucked properly into his pants, which are somewhere between slacks and jeans. He's wearing a super intricate watch that he's been messing with, which stands out. I'm thinking he goes for a more muted color scheme, though I'm not sure which color. Green or bronze-ish maybe?
Marella: There's a two piece situation going on here. The top is lacey, see through on the top half with jewel-like details. The bottom half is like a skirt, plenty of ruffles giving it some volume while still being easy to move in. Torn between whether it's a white/ice blue color pairing or a deep red. Whatever color, it stands out. I'm thinking it's paired with a chunky platform heel and her hair is swept back into a braided ponytail or bun to show off her makeup--sweet colors but dramatic shapes.
Linh: She keeps it simple with a long, flowing dress, but it's in a slightly wrapped style that leaves a slit down the side that flares out as the fabric curves. It's a sage green, matching her eyeshadow. Her hair's pinned up in a half-up bun, and silver jewelry compliments the whole look. She's got strappy sandals with a slight heel in a light color, but doesn't want to overdo it. The sleeves might be a little sheer and flowy, matching the rest of the look
Tam: He's only here because Linh is here; he wasn't going to get dressed up, but Linh said he should have fun, so to appease her he's got on a black button down with floral print (the print is black so it's very subtle) tucked into black jeans. He's wearing complimentary silver jewelry, a chain and rings; it's passable as kinda fancy while still not drawing attention to himself
Stina: She's got a draping bodycon dress that reaches the floor, super regal in a statement maroon, flaring towards the end. She is that girl. It's not super tight, but it's still shapely. Her nails match the dress and so does her eyeshadow, complemented by a sharp winged liner. Her heels are short stilettos, black and secure. Her hair has been pinned up out of her face, but gathered in a way where the curls all flow down her back.
Maruca: She's got a short dress, about knee length, which falls in layers. I'm thinking a dusty pink color, all one piece with a dip down the middle. The back is slightly open and all the fabric is a solid, smooth color. The only texture is along the front of the bodice, which is studded with jewels and lace. it's simple yet stands out, complimenting her gold jewelry. Her makeup matches, and I think she might go for braids for the occasion, perhaps with gold hair cuffs throughout to stick to the theme.
Wylie: He's not a fan of social events so he keeps it simple, just an unbuttoned blazer over plain shirt and pants. The boldest thing he'd be willing to do is wear a brighter color, like a mustard yellow or rusty orange blazer, but he doesn't want to be noticed. No tie, no pocket square, nothing extra. Just formal enough that people don't come up to him and ask why he's not dressed up.
Those are some of my ideas for what they might wear in a human au to prom! I know many people are fond of the girls in suits and such, and I also love them and think they'd look great! I just don't think it matches their clothing choices from the series; they've shown an affection for dresses that I used as inspiration instead (except for Sophie). So that's why I didn't include those ideas :)

The driver from the beginning deserves a spinoff series. He also apparently has a tumblr account that he posted about this on, and that's how the Neverseen found Sophie in the human world.
Fintan lent Alvar his boyfriend's books (LOTR) and Fitz read them too.
There's a tribunal taking place at the beginning of book one. It's never mentioned again. Whose is it? Good question. Maybe Linh's?
All elves are canonically nonbinary. Elf is a gender in itself.
Sophie isn't a girl, she's an elf. Elwin isn't a man, he's an elf. Those two in particular are extra non of binary.
Sophie's place in her human family is totally a metaphor for being queer I don't make the rules. Could also be a neurodivergent metaphor- or both!

Very cool of him to "forget" to return his leaping crystal to the forbidden cities.
Either Tiergan is terrible at keeping secrets or just Does Not Care if Sophie knows he's with the Black Swan. Or both.

Biana is a lesbian.
Sophie tells Grady and Edaline she loves them and it's the sweetest fucking thing.
Fitz says "no reason to worry" and then has an internal crisis about turning into his father. Mood lmao
The scene where Sophie and Grady/Edaline talk about the cancelled adoption is so good, it has so much raw emotion and it completely shattered my heart. 10/10 I hate it.

Oh my gosh. The Princess and The Popstar.....wow. It. Was. AMAZING! I literally stayed up until three am reading it, on a school night.
I'm so tired. But...WORTH IT.

I'm Tired, You're Lonely: The first Sokeefe soulmate au I wrote. Angsty af, be sure to heed the tags. It's pretty dark, but like, it ends on a happy note. So there is that!
imperfect halves: also angsty as frick,Sophie's got PTSD and Keefe has abandonment trauma. Together, they're soulmates. They're 100% not okay with that. They'll figure it out eventually.
Your Love Is Like Hanging On: OH MAN. Mostly canon-compliant-up-until-a-certain-point pain-sharing soulmate au. So angsty it's hard to breathe around, but the ending will make you want soulmates to be canon in the kotlc universe. There's also my ranting about how horrible canon has been to me in the end notes. It's a great time.
Maybe One Day You'll Understand Why: Major. Character. Death. So, you know that one soulmate au that's like, it's not the first words that they say to you that show up on your skin, but the last ones? So you don't know you had them until they're gone? Yeah. That.
fate has been cruel(to give me someone like you): Angst. Angst and comedy. Some batman masks. A few cases of delirium. And lots of attempted kidnapping. And some stabbing? Medical innacuracy? But my attempts at comedy as well, so like, i figured it would balance itself out.
Things Continued As They Had Been: PLATONIC BABY SOULMATES MEET ON CHRISTMAS DURING CHURCH ITS FLUFFY AND SWEET AND SUGARY. Tiny bit of angst, not a lot, because they're like... 11. It's just fluffy and platonic. Not what you asked for, but you might want that after "Maybe One Day You'll Understand Why".
So far, these are all I've written. There will most likely be more. I'm a sucker for this trope.

what would your ideal fic be like
Excellent question! Depends on the fandom, and I don't have a completely fleshed out plan, just general concepts.
For kotlc, it'd be something without romance focusing on the characters' other relationships--strong, not necessarily healthy. It'd develop the worldbuilding further, ask questions of it and really flesh out some details--even if it doesn't 100% match canon. However! I do prefer canon-adjacent fics, set in their world and following the established rules, but it doesn't have to be inflexible. Some creative play is fine. I'm a sucker for both Fitz and Tam, so if it had either of them that'd be excellent. I tend not to like original characters in fics, though; background is alright, but main? Not really my thing. Also I hardly ever read chaptered fics, so I'd love something self-contained. I also find certain arguments to be incredibly cathartic--like if Sophie had kept pushing and standing up for herself at the end of Unlocked (there's a fic that does that which I adore it for, though I don't have the link atm). There's a few more, but those are the first that come to mind
I'm not a huge fic reader, but these are generally traits I find I enjoy when I do read them! You may notice I check off a lot of these boxes in the wings au as well (though not all of them, actually). OH and also throw in some dragons and I will love it :)
(but if we're talking a chorus of dragons ideal fics, I'll take literally anything rn there is ONE fic on ao3 I will not be picky. anything I would take anything)
