Today we have Knorr brand noodles with cheese and herbs flavour, which is new to me in noodles. Sounds like liquid mac n cheese, but let’s find out!

They have one single huge flavour packet, which is natural with a cheese flavour noodle as there’s bound to be a bunch of cheese powder in there. The noodles look run of the mill for a small packet of cheap instant noodles, thin and slightly cracky. They’re unevenly spaced, which is a worry for even cooking.

The scent as they steep is mild and cheesy, but the noodles are sticking together in sheets and have to be separated with chopsticks to make sure they cook properly. The taste is satisfyingly cheesy but a bit too salty, with noodles that are grainy but otherwise pleasant in texture. There’s somehow a slight staleness to the flavour when you keep eating, which you kinda have to get past. I don’t have to force it down, but I also didn’t enjoy finishing the bowl, and I left most of the soup. A few minutes after eating them, I notice a weird dry feeling on my tongue and a plastic-y aftertaste. When I want something quick and cheesy in the future, I think I’ll stick to spaghetti with grated cheese.

A while ago, I picked up a few of those Knorr Sides packets when they were on sale and promptly forgot I had them. I rediscovered them in my pantry yesterday and figured it would make for a simple dinner using “two sides = one meal” math, so I grabbed two chicken-flavor rice packets.

Decided to use my Breville Fast Slow Pro (vaguely similar to one of those Instant Pot gizmos) since it does a dandy job as a rice cooker, and poured in 4 cups of water, ripped open and poured in the first packet of rice, then ripped open and poured in the second packet of rice but it turned out it was a packet of noodles, not rice. Oh dear. Dramatic pause, then a shrug. Let’s see what happens, so I gave the combo a good stir, sealed it and ran the program.

I was on the couch while it cooked, and Dexy took the opportunity for some lap time. When the chicken scent wafted over, her head started bobbin’ as she sniffed around trying to figure out where it was coming from. A good sign.

When the program was complete, I went to check on the results. The rice/noodle amalgamation was a little loose (I need to use a bit less water with the sealed device since it doesn’t lose as much to evaporation) but it didn’t look as bad as I had feared.

It tightened up a bit after being exposed to air and I scooped it into a pasta bowl, topped it with some sweet chili sauce and Parmesan/Romano cheese and sat down at the table to eat.

Not bad! A little less water would give it a better chew, but not bad. I’m going to call it a successful misadventure, which is on brand for a number of events in my life.
