Clearly, I need to put some of my girls through more Events. They're generally pretty well-off for no reason other than I wanted them to have struggles but not like... horrors. Although at the same time, in the roleplay Piper was in, every character she had a connection to fucking died and/or turned out to be a power role which was fun. She's certainly went through things.
And quite frankly - when I think about things involving her and AUs, she doesn't get an easy time in those either. However, on the regular, she doesn't really go through many Horrors? Although she's a good contender when I think of AU stuff and that roleplay.
Kiran as well for when I eventually talk about my funny little Pokemon gijinka headcanon world stuff. Which is equal part grounded but also I have fucked up elements. She's also one of the main protagonists in this kind of story I have in mind. Actually I find just... thinking of a story is a sure fire way to do that.
So there are other OCs I could mention but I think it's better if those are left secret for now.

Safiya and Amira both came over to the house, and Safiya cheerfully talked with her stepmom Tess. Meanwhile, Megan made awkward small talk with her ex-wife. She and Amira were cordial and good co-parents but they weren't at that exes who are friends stage yet.
Megan: You look nice in your kurta pajama, A.
Amira: Thanks Megs, you look nice too in your-(she gestures while trying to think of the words before grinning) Your top. Is that a corset or tube top?
Megan: (grinning) Thanks, and I guess it's both. I got it from Simsa when I took Piper shopping with me.
Plus, Emily invited Kiran over. As soon as Hamuera saw them and the way they smiled at Emily and vice versa, he smiled mischievously at Emily and mouthed behind Kiran's back You have such a crush on them. Emily gave him a playful 'I'll kick your butt' look before inviting Kiran in, complimenting their hat and overalls. Also, a photo of Cam embracing Piper while Hamuera gives them an amused as heck look.

In October 1962, during the Cuban missile crisis, ministers from the six member states of the European Economic Community (EEC), the European Union’s predecessor, met several times. But while the world was teetering on the brink of nuclear war, with European newspapers writing alarming stories about the “worst crisis since the end of the Second World War,” that was not what the ministers discussed during those meetings. The historian Kiran Klaus Patel, who researched this for his book Project Europe, discovered that according to the agenda of the Council of Ministers meeting on Oct. 9-10, they negotiated import regulations for vegetables and fruit. And during the next session, on Oct. 22-23, they tackled the common budget, including “arrangements relating to the value of the unit of account and to the exchange rates.”
When the European Union comes under criticism today for not being ready to deal with the geopolitical implications of Russia’s war in Ukraine, it’s important to realize just how far the EU has already come—from the almost total isolation, and insulation, from geopolitical events evident during the Cuba crisis. Today, with national and European politicians dealing with security issues on a daily basis, that level of strategic diffidence would be unimaginable.
Of course, in 1962, in the corridors outside the official meeting room, the six ministers must have discussed the Cuba crisis: All six EEC member states were also in NATO, which was supposed to defend Europe if things escalated. They all knew that in the case of a nuclear confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, Europe would be one of the battlegrounds. But the official agenda of the council, which represented the interests of the member states and was—and is, in the case of the present-day European Council—the place where decisions were taken in Europe, shows no official trace of any geopolitical or Cuba discussion. As Patel wrote, incredible as it may seem today, the council “was much too busy to save the world from annihilation.”
During those nerve-wracking October days, it was the White House that dealt with the Soviet nuclear missiles that the Americans had just discovered in Cuba: assessing how many missiles were already stationed there, how many were still on the way, and how to get them out of Cuba or prevent them from arriving there without unleashing a nuclear Armageddon. It is well documented that it was Washington that pulled the Western strings during the Cuba crisis. The Europeans were barely consulted.
It is true that Europe still mostly relies on the United States for its security. The past few years have made that abundantly clear. During the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, last week, Washington’s caution over Ukraine’s accession to NATO prevailed over strong pleas, especially from Eastern European leaders, to offer Kyiv a fixed entry date. Nevertheless, one look at the conclusions of the meeting of the 27 European heads of state and government in Brussels at the end of June reveals how much has changed since 1962. No negotiations on vegetables or fruit, this time; almost the entire agenda was taken up with strategic foreign-policy matters, predominantly security-related. EU leaders made decisions on future security guarantees to Ukraine, EU enlargement with new countries in the east, the development of its defense sector, better migration management through “partnerships” with North African countries, more efficient surveillance of Europe’s external borders, de-risking trade relations with China, and increasing trade with Latin American and Caribbean countries. And these are just a few issues on the list.
Europe, once a mere spectator to global power games, is now becoming more of a player. It has come a long way.
In the 1950s, Western Europe isolated itself from power politics in the international arena. Coming out of two devastating world wars, it focused on internal peace instead. This mostly meant peace between France and Germany—jealous rivals that had started Europe’s three last wars—through a common agricultural policy, trade, and social policies. While the United States took care of the collective Western defense, Europeans set up institutions to reduce power politics, rebuilt their economies, and tried, in general, to become better people. European integration was about de-politicizing problems. In a way, “Europe stepped out of history,” Jean-Louis Bourlanges, a French centrist parliamentarian, once said.
With the war in Ukraine, this phase is definitely over. Europe is now stepping into history again. It once more risks becoming the main battleground. It surely took the Europeans a long time to realize this. Now, all European countries are beefing up their defense capacity and trying to improve the interoperability of their armed forces through joint training exercises and more harmonized procurement of equipment.
With an aggressive power waging a war at Europe’s doorstep, continuing to de-politicize issues can be dangerous nowadays—even internally. Today, the opposite is sometimes what is called for, both on the European and the national level: not de-politicizing issues but politicizing them to a certain extent. Recent years have marked “the end of the age of innocence” for Europe, as Carnegie Europe scholar Stefan Lehne wrote in 2020.
Everything Europe does when it goes through its normal business suddenly has a strong security component. For instance, Europeans now realize they must protect their free press against fake news from Russian troll factories, their infrastructure against sabotage, their internal market against state-sponsored companies from hostile countries, and their democratic institutions against malicious interference. The furor last week about an American getting appointed to a European Commission job with responsibility for dealing with big U.S. tech companies is telling in this regard. Europeans, who until recently looked at the world with an open mind—or, as some would say, naiveté—are becoming increasingly suspicious. In just a few years’ time, their mindset has completely changed.
Another sign that Europe is stepping into history again is that it is heavily involved with the provision of military aid to Ukraine. Brussels is buying weapons and ammunition on behalf of the 27 member states. It financially supports member states that pass their equipment on to Ukraine and tries to keep track of which country does what. It also coordinates work on roads, airports, and bridges in order to facilitate the transportation of heavy goods to the east. This logistical work is more difficult than many people realize. During the Cold War, for instance, there were signs on every bridge in Western Europe indicating how much weight it could take, precisely to facilitate military maneuvers. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, when the threat of war disappeared, these signs also disappeared. Now, EU military planners are having a hard time scrambling to collect this information from all the member states. One military official who requested anonymity said moving heavy tanks from one corner of Europe to another can be quite a logistical challenge: “We have had to take detours of hundreds of kilometers.”
Some argue that Europe should have done all these things earlier. They are right. But European leaders, who decide on these matters, only ever act jointly when they have pressing problems that they have not managed to solve themselves—when they see no alternative. This explains why Europe seldom acts (except perhaps on climate change) and mostly reacts. It is late in the game per definition. We saw this with vaccine procurement, the eurozone rescue fund, European banking supervision, the Turkey refugee deal, and now with Russia’s aggression: First, there needs to be a crisis; second, EU member states don’t manage to stamp out the fire themselves—and only then can there be decisive, collective action. As the Irish political scientist Brigid Laffan has argued, this is happening so often that they are actually getting quite good at it. In a lecture last year at the Asser Institute, she said that despite the complex and sometimes chaotic decision-making process in the EU, there is a “Collective Power Europe” emerging. Member states seem to be understanding that the EU does not only take away some of their national sovereignty but actually gives them sovereignty, too—in the form of the power to act in a dangerous, instable world where raw mercantilism replaces the multilateral, rules-based system.
The symbolism of European integration and the high expectations it raised after two world wars were monumental. The Europeans may have been largely ignored during the Cuba crisis, but the strength of their project was that at least someone tried to learn from history and try out a model of peaceful, international governance. It brought them peace and prosperity. It continues to inspire many all over the world, not just illustrated by the fact that 10 countries are eager to join—whose trust in the EU seems to be rapidly increasing—but also that regional organizations in Africa and Asia have used the model of the EU’s internal market as an example.
Despite setbacks and challenges—which to a certain extent are normal in multinational governance—member states continue to invest in the EU. The challenge now is to keep what they managed to build during the decades spent “outside history” to make it more secure while jointly building more geopolitical capacity. Europeans still have a long way to go. But reading about those scary days during the Cuban missile crisis, and their absence from any decision-making, also serves as a reminder of how far they have come already.

Duchess of Sussex faced ‘disgusting’ threats to life, senior Met officer says
‘Very real’ threats against Meghan led to prosecutions, says outgoing assistant commissioner Neil Basu
Pippa Crerar and Kiran Stacey
Tue 29 Nov 2022 18.29 GMT
The Duchess of Sussex was subject to multiple “disgusting” threats against her life, a senior police officer has revealed, adding they were “very real” and led to prosecutions.
Neil Basu, the outgoing assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan police, told Channel 4 News the threats were deemed credible, adding that the material would have left her feeling “under threat all of the time”.
The remarks throw new light on Prince Harry’s attempt to get automatic police protection for his family when they are in the UK.
In his final interview before leaving Scotland Yard, Basu, the country’s most senior officer of colour, criticised Suella Braverman’s talk of dreaming of sending migrants to Rwanda as “inexplicable” and suggested his outspoken views on racism may have cost him promotion to the top job in policing.
But it was his comments on the threats to Meghan’s life that appear to reveal why Prince Harry told the high court earlier this year that he would not feel safe when visiting his family under existing security arrangements. The Duke of Sussex subsequently won the right to challenge a Home Office decision not to grant him automatic police protection when he is in the UK – despite offering to pay for it himself.
When asked if there had been many credible threats against Meghan’s life, Basu answered: “Absolutely, and if you’d seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it … the kind of rhetoric that’s online, if you don’t know what I know, you would feel under threat all of the time.”
He added: “We had teams investigating it. People have been prosecuted for those threats.”
The Sussexes have been approached for comment.
Basu became an officer at the Met in 1992, rising through the ranks to be appointed as the assistant commissioner for specialist operations in 2018. He has attracted criticism among Conservative MPs for his outspoken views about race and policing, such as criticising elements of Prevent, the government anti-terrorism programme which has targeted Muslim extremism.
He was tipped as a future Met commissioner, but did not apply to succeed Cressida Dick earlier this year, with government sources saying they were opposed to his candidacy.
Basu later applied to be head of the National Crime Agency, but was turned down for the job by the Home Office without any explanation.
He told Channel 4 News: “I do know that No 10 has previously interfered in me being appointed to positions. And the reason for that, I have not been told.
“I would surmise – and people who know me surmise – that it is because I’ve been outspoken about issues that do not fit with the current political administration. They are wrong. Diversity and inclusion are two of the most important things for policing.”
A Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement: “A new director general was appointed to the National Crime Agency earlier this year by the then home secretary [Priti Patel], following a fair and open recruitment campaign.”
The Home Office said in a statement: “The home secretary expects forces to take a zero-tolerance approach to racism within their workplace.
“But she is also very clear about the need to manage our borders effectively and have an asylum system that works for those in genuine need, as are the British people.”
Asked whether he regretted being seen as “woke”, Basu responded: “Are you alert to issues of racial and social justice? Yes I am. And if that is the definition of woke, I’ll wear it as a bumper sticker every day of the week.”
He added: “I was born in 1968. [Enoch Powell’s] ‘rivers of blood’ speech happened on the constituency next to where my parents lived and made their life hell. A mixed-race couple walking through the streets in the 1960s.”
He added: “I speak about race because I know something about race because I’m a 54-year-old mixed race man.”

KIRAN EKANSH SHETH — ABRIDGED.
welcome to marina, KIRAN EKANSH SHETH ( nonbinary, he/they ) ! they are a THIRTY FOUR year old who has lived over on HYLAND PARK for MOST OF THEIR LIFE and works as a PSYCHOLOGY/LITERATURE PROFESSOR. everyone says they look a lot like DEV PATEL. what do you think? — JAMES, 24, THEY/THEM, EST.
MENTIONS OF ARSON / FIRE, DEATH, CHRONIC PAIN ( FIBROMYALGIA / CHRONIC FATIGUE ), AND INJURY.
profile.
full name: kiran ekansh sheth.
birthday: june 9th, 1989.
astrology: gemini sun, virgo moon, libra ascending.
sexuality: bisexual.
currently listening to: i wanna be your dog by the stooges.
last known location: [[[cannot be found]]]
PINTEREST.
brief history.
born somewhere in connecticut, but their memories of the state are clouded and dense. born to parents who were happy, always smiling - an older brother, if kes can remember right, if they can still remember their little sister.
arson / fire / death; around the age of five, or maybe six - a mysterious fire took over their house, consuming everything in sight. and by some sort of sick miracle, he was the only one to make it out.
from there on - kes was a product of the foster system. for the next few years, it was them in group home to group home, never fully wanted, never fully belonging to anyone.
they're fostered out to a family in marina when they're ten, and the sheth household was the only household that stuck by kiran. he put up a fight for a while - never made it too easy on them, but they never gave up. by twelve, they officially adopted kes.
an angry kid whose fire barely extinguished - for a long time, even into teenhood, even when they drew into themselves and their endless amount of books.
eventually kes learned to turn the anger into passion, to do something better than mope around, or get into useless fights; started studying seriously, obsessively absorbing information.
after high school, they left to study at columbia, english and psychology; a waste of time for most people, maybe, but not kiran.
stayed in the city for a long while, moving tiny apartment to tiny apartment and surviving on the bare essentials - a mountain of both student and medical debt threatening to avalanche over them.
eventually moved back to marina after their masters, did a few research programs and their own independent studies before going for their doctorate at the local university. and after that - kes settled on becoming a professor. had bigger dreams, but life got in the way of it. and that's currently what they're doing now!
facts & temperaments.
regularly goes by kes, it's just their initials put together but it's almost preferred at this point.
fire / injury; was left with substantial burn scars from the house fire all those years ago, mostly hidden away by their clothes. they can be, at times, insecure about them. they prefer the lights off.
chronic pain / chronic illness / invisible illness; also a sufferer of the double whammy that is fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. their flare-ups for fibromyalgia began when they were a late teenager, while their CFS started manifesting during their later college years. a lot of days are tolerable, but a lot are also unbearable. is at the point where they rely on a cane more often than not, even as a precaution.
a lot less angry than they were as a teenager - is too tired for it, maybe - but they still have a tendency to fixate on their chosen fields of study. is always learning, even after receiving their doctorate.
tends to be wary of strangers, or just people they don't know very well. will still be cordial, or even strike up a conversation if it suits them - but the wariness remains.
on the other hand - endlessly loyal to those who've stuck by them since childhood. treasures their friends deeply, would probably die for them even though half the time they make him want to rip his hair out.
tends to run more neutral - doesn't care for taking sides, though is naturally biased towards his friends and generally tolerates their shit more than anyone else. patience can wane a little thin towards others. tries to end arguments, not start them.
a little oblivious when others flirt with them - kes has spent so long focused on their schooling and then their career, that the idea of settling down has completely slipped their mind.

That next day, Emily headed over to her brother Amir’s house in Newcrest. She chatted with her half-ish sister (they share Amir as a half brother) Mariela. "Kiran's coming over tomorrow to work on our history project." Mari said, and Emily blushed. "They are? When?" Mariela suppressed a smile. "At 4pm, since they have horse riding lessons at 3." Emily nodded. "Is it it okay with your amma and dad if I come over tomorrow too?" She asked casually. "I'll help you guys out with the project, since I already finished mine." Mari grinned teasingly. "You're mostly coming over for Kiran, right? And nah, they won't mind." She said. "Great. I mean because I want to hang out with both of you, I mean you're like a sister to me, Mari, and I like hanging out with you and its not only because Kiran is coming over." She added. "Sure. I believe that but I also think you just want to see Kiran." Mari said, grinning, and she teased Emily playfully.
Emily's brother Amir came out of his room and she teased him lovingly for his crop top. "Hey it looks cute. Plus it shows off my abs." He added. "Or lack thereof." Emily said, and she laughed as Amir lightly swatted her arm but laughed too. Emily's sis Safiya, who was over for a three day weekend, came back from grocery shopping and she spent time with her baby siblings Amir, Anjali, Mariela, and Emily. Plus, Amira checked up on her kids and Emily as well. "How are you doing, sweetie?" She asked Emily. "Good thanks auntie Amira." She said. Amira had told Emily to call her auntie Amira instead of Mrs. Patel-Ortiz.
