Kain is not too bright, but he’s probably the strongest of Kirby’s friends. He’s a fast swimmer, an adept sailor, and a champion at loogie spitting. His knowledge of the best fishing spots has provided many a dinner for Kirby and his friends during their late-night beach parties, for which the eternally hungry Kirby is always grateful. kine is based off mola mola sunfish, which are about 6ft in size!!therefore i raise you: mola mola sunbathing party!! (+ the slightly more realistic animal friends :DD)

OKAY i did a lot of research on animals for this one!! feel free to read my notes under the cut 👇

kine: is a mola mola/ocean sunfish, specifically from pacific waters! i'm in love with the idea of this six foot behemoth next to all the tiny creatures of dreamland, and as someone with a crippling obsession with fish, i had to draw him :] pacific mola molas match the distinctive petal-shaped clauvus (not a caudal fin!) that kine has, but don't have a lot of iconic lip action, which is why i tried to make it seem like a... discolored snout? molas are typically one color, and the blue color could seem natural from an angle, so let's pretend that real!kine just has lots of cool barnacles.

coo: is taken from @starflungwaddledee's dusky eagle owl notes! they literally look so much like coo it's insanee + i added the stripes to his wings. finding the bird-to-cartoon ratio was kinda hard actually 😭 birds are hard to draw what

rick: is based on a golden hamster (aka syrian hamster)!!! he's exactly the type of hamster you think of when you think of a normal hamster. golden hamsters are technically one of the largest hamsters, but still only stand at about 7 inches— so i decided to use his cartoon logic to keep him somewhat relative to coo

chuchu: SHE'S A FLAPJACK OCTOPUS SHE'S LITERALLY A FLAPJACK OCTOPUS!!!! scientists actually wanted to name the species "adorabilis" and just look them up please they're so cute!!! you can tell that DL3 character designers had flapjack octopi on their minds when they designed her. their fins look similar to a bow, and i obviously couldn't get rid of that, so i gave her both :]]

nago: is a calico cat. he's not overly cartoonish in his game design in regards to how he looks as a cat— he is undeniably a cat. i let my middle school warrior cats obsession take over for that one. calicos are almost always female, so i also raise you trans nago 🫶

pitch: resembles a warbling white eye, according to wikirby. i tend to draw him similar to one anyways, thanks to adeleine's slightly more realistic drawings in the DL3 credits. he's definitely also been sized up to fit in with the rest of the cast, since a 4-inch bird wouldn't exactly be visible.

The height chart gets even funnier when you consider that Rick gives Kirby piggyback rides. Kirby, that hamster is only up to your feet.

i think that for reasons to do with this the earth accurate sizes doesn't actually work very well when you try to extrapolate it out, and i did intend it as a joke!! it's funny and i enjoy it, but it falls apart the second you try to consider them functioning with others 😂

like... is kirby small enough to be comfortably piggybacked by hamster sized rick? then he's too small to be held in coo's claws, let alone to fit in kine's mouth! this would likely be the case even if we just took kirby's "canon" size of 8-9 inches but plonked him in an earth accurate sizing for everything else

then, is king dedede a penguin accurate size (king penguin size: 85–95cm) or is he comparative to a human adult? either way, he'd be smaller than kine, as mola mola average 250cm tall (at least according to wikipedia. other sources say 300cm longs and up to 450cm tall) and easily dwarf humans here on earth.

or does dedede have to be comparative to kirby, who is comparative to rick, who is an 18cm tall hamster, making kirby probably 10cm at best, making dedede probably half the size of a king penguin though maybe closer to a blue penguin (45cm), meaning that kine could easily be up to ten times his height--

in general i kind of just prefer to size them comparatively, starting from kirby, and considering individual characters Bigger or Smaller. as much as i'd love to see an enormous semi-realistic sunfish kine basking happily in the ocean surrounded by tiny friends, i think that it's easier for me to work on a "kirby" size scale and consider them all aliens, at the end of the day 😂

this seems likely, given that female mola mola are apparently bigger than the boys! they can also supposedly spawn an absolutely mindboggling three hundred million (sorry. hang on. three HUNDRED million!?!?!?!?!) eggs at a time, so i hope you're all really really looking forward to seeing a Lot lot more of Kine around.

#you could work in a sort of 'kirby auto scales to his animal friends' mechanic i suppose. he's certainly been tinier before!#that could be enjoyable in a world building sense! you'd see many small items look BIG when you were with rick and vice versa with kine!#but i'd feel bad assigning enormousness to kine! he'd be quite difficult to get into just about any location and he's already a bit of a #dare i say #fish out of water #definitely fun to play around with in individual circumstances but hard to work into a broader world-scape. not impossible though!#asks

Okay, so, the Kirby "Encyclopedia" should really have been called the Kirby "Directory."

I mentioned I would translate it, but there's not much worth translating in here. Most of it is less interesting than your average pause screen lore. Thus, I'm not doing the whole book…

Here are translations for all the ones I found interesting though!

[Mid-Boss, Helper, Ally]

A girl whose hobby is painting. She seems to have come from some place quite far away to study painting. She has the power to bring the creatures and food she paints on her canvas to life.

[Re-appears as a Dream Friend]

Adeleine, who had been on a journey to someplace far away, appears alongside Ribbon to support Kirby.

//Interesting that they imply she was on a journey elsewhere between 64 and Star Allies...

Bandanna Waddle Dee

[Mid-Boss, Helper, Ally]

A Waddle Dee recognizable by their trademark blue bandanna. They were an enemy in the past, in service to King Dedede, but in recent years they've made more appearances as an ally of Kirby's. Can perform a variety of techniques with their spear.

Marx

[Boss, Helper]

A mischief-loving jester. Manipulated Kirby in his very first appearance in an attempt to make everyone's home, Popstar, his own. When it's time for a fight, he shows his fangs and spreads his large wings to attack.

Marx Soul

[Boss]

The form that the defeated Marx takes after he is resurrected by the power of the Galactic Nova. Appears at the end of the True Arena after defeating all other bosses.

Magolor

[Boss, Helper]

The "magician of falsehoods” who came from another world aboard the spaceship called the Lor Starcutter. He meets Kirby and the others after crash landing in Dream Land. In truth, he planned on acquiring the Master Crown Landia was guarding to take control of Halcandra.

//I normally translate “magician of falsehoods” as “lying wizard” based on the English game, but they put it in quotes here, so magician of falsehoods felt more appropriate. Also, Magolor? Did you REALLY want to take over Halcandra? You know that planet's awful, right? (Ticks another box in the "Magolor isn't as smart as he makes himself out to be" checklist.) The rest of the stuff on his page is completely useless, btw. Just saying Kirby et al help gather ship parts and that you can recruit him in KF2 at Rank 39

Magolor Soul

[Boss]

This grotesque being was once Magolor, before he was swallowed up by the limitless power of the Master Crown. He is saved when the crown is destroyed.

Kine

[Helper, Ally]

The droll jokester Kine looks identical to an ocean sunfish. His speciality is moving in water. Normally, Kirby can't inhale enemies in water, but with Kine, that's not a problem.

Coo

[Helper, Ally]

Flying is his specialty, and he can even fly through strong winds and gales. Grabs Kirby in his claws when he and Kirby unite. Is apparently quite the star in Dream Land.

Rick

[Helper, Ally]

A friend who looks just like a hamster. Kirby can hop on top of him to travel across land. Rick doesn't slide on ice, and he can climb sheer cliffs by continually jumping. And he jumps quite high. Has a girlfriend named Pick.

Gooey

[Helper, Ally]

Kirby's friend. The same species as Dark Matter, but Gooey does not possess a wicked heart. Can catch and swallow enemies using their long tongue, but Gooey can't use inhale.

Arrived to bring bad dreams to the residents of Dream Land. Takes this form after you defeat Nightmare Power Orb.

Dark Matter

[Boss]

A member of the Dark Matter tribe. Starting with Popstar, where Kirby and friends lived, Dark Matter spread a dark fog over the star to turn it into a world of darkness, so it would be more hospitable to their tribe. Dark Matter's name refers to the substance known as dark matter.

//Interesting that Dark Matter was trying to...terraform Popstar? Sounds like Necrodeus, to be honest. That last line about the name is mostly there for Japanese speakers who might not connect the word with the concept, because the concept is written in kanji.

Galacta Knight

[Boss]

The strongest warrior in the galaxy, who, out of fear of their tremendous power, was sealed in crystal long, long ago. Galacta enjoys strife. Summoned by Galactic Nova when Meta Knight made a wish to fight the strongest warrior in the galaxy.

//Interesting about Galacta actually LIKING strife/conflict. Don't know if we'd heard that before.

Landia

[Boss]

Four dragons living in the depths of Halcandra, and the last boss you face there. They normally take the shape of a single large dragon with four heads. Attacked Magolor's ship, the Lor. They can fly and spit fire and move about freely at high altitudes.

Necrodeus

[Boss]

The boss of the Skull Gang who plotted to cover the world in darkness. At the beginning of the story, he uses his staff to split Kirby into 10, defeating 9 of them.

An invasive species from outer space that invaded the forgotten land. Possesses the ability to travel through dimensions. After an accident, they were split into Elfilin and Fecto Forgo. Called "ID-F86"

//I always thought the "Elfilis was an invader" might have been narrator bias from the Forgotten Landers, so it's interesting to have confirmation they were a hostile invader.

Chaos Elfilis

[Boss]

A new life form born when the souls of Soul Forgo, Morpho Knight, and the primeval beasts mixed together.

Fecto Forgo

[Boss]

What was left when Fecto Elfilis's benevolent heart split off. Kept in Lab Discovera, they were controlling Leongar.

Queen

[Other]

The queen of Ripple Star where Ribbon and the other fairies live. She's a bit of a scatterbrain and not always the most reliable.

Shopkeeper Magolor

[Other]

Magolor, only he runs a shoppe. If you buy all of his equipment, the shoppe gets an upgrade and he dresses like Magolor.

//I translated this because the writing was hilarious. "He dresses like Magolor." Also, the first line could also be read as "A Magolor who runs a shop." I’m just imagining all these different Magolors now…

KDL3 Stage 1-5, Mine's stage!

Kirby and Gooey split up and agreed to meet at a certain spot in Grass Land. Kirby led Kine while Gooey led Mine! Kine's going to stay here with Mine for a while, until he is needed again. (this is because I always drop the Animal Friends off and the end of each 'loved one' level when I play! It does absolutely nothing I just think it's cute).

Mine is Kine's wife! She's a sunfish mermaid like him, but she might be more adapted to fresh water or land since she lives in Grass Land. I dunno how salinity works when it applies to a mermaid ngl. Like do mermaids care if water is saltwater or freshwater? They must, right? Anyhow, unlike Kine, Mine doesn't need to use mobility aids on land. I imagine she's very conscious/concerned of her husband's role as a Dark Matter Hunter; the feeling may be similar to having a spouse in the military--a sense of admiration but also a sense of fear of what may happen to him if he's not careful. Kine has been thinking about retiring from the lifestyle, but he feels that he cannot let Dreamland down during its time of need. So, this might be his last adventure!

Designing Mine was an interesting challenge, as I'm sure all the other 'loved ones' will be-- many of them are merely recolors of the animal friends so it's tough to come up with a completely separate gijinka design (I don't want to risk them looking like siblings LOL). I wanted Mine to look softer and cuter than Kine, with less sharp points. I debated whether to give her visible lips since Mine's in-game sprite doesn't have them, so I compromised by giving her a bit of lipstick that's the same color as her blush/cheek spots.

Headcanons about Francisca's trophy situation after Star Allies

It's no secret that Francisca has a collection of frozen corpses that she prizes as trophies. She outright says it herself in her dialogue right before her boss battles in Star Allies. Literally, a collection of people that she has killed, and then encased them in ice cubes.

I have headcanons as to what's going on with her trophy collection after Star Allies. How do others in the cast react to her trophies?

After the events of Heroes in Another Dimension when Hyness and the mage sisters were rescued and became on Kirby's good side, Francisca has never given up her prized collection. In fact, she's made implications that she wants to make the collection even bigger.

This has consequences for her reputation amongst the dream friends, even after she and her sisters were accepted into the alliance. The other dream friends don't support her decision to keep her collection, and are largely freaked out by how she insists on it.

Francisca is the most infamous of the three mage sisters by far. Flamberge and Zan Partizanne are better received, as most of the other dream friends can get along with them just well enough. Francisca, however, makes a lot of the dream friends uncomfortable, due to her insistency in keeping her trophy collection, and the fact that she's generally the most twisted and psychotic of the three mages.

Her frozen corpse collection is very unnerving to a lot of the dream friends. They can't stomach it, really. They wish that she'd just get rid of it, but she has no intention to. While some of them are polite about disagreeing with her decision, others are pretty judgmental about it. Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee are perhaps the two most judgmental ones on this matter.

This isn't helped by the fact that Francisca's family just supports her decision to keep it. Flamberge, Zan and Hyness tell the other dream friends that they don't get to boss Francisca around and that she has every right to keep her collection. They just enable her entirely. Especially Flamberge, who lets her get away with literally anything.

As a result, due to Francisca having the worst reputation of the mage sisters, she has the least amount of friends. Aside from her family, her only actual friends are Kirby, Marx, Magolor, Susie, Gooey and Kine. The reason why she's friends with Kine is because she quite likes the sunfish and is willing to let him drink water from her soda gun, lol. Kine takes well to that.

And even then, Magolor and Susie themselves still can't completely shake off the feeling of being unsettled by Francisca's collection, despite them both being able to consider her to be a friend.

Yes, even Susie. Even though she has roboticized people in the past, that's not quite the same as literally killing people and making a collection out of it, as even Susie couldn't imagine doing that. But ultimately, she can stomach the corpse collection a bit better than most others can, allowing her to get along with Francisca just fine.

But there's one particular dream friend that has an opinion on Francisca's trophies that is way different from the others' opinions.

That would be Marx.

Almost all the other dream friends disagree with Francisca's decision to keep her collection, whether it's being polite or judgmental in their disagreement. Marx, on the other hand, agrees with the decision.

Marx thinks Francisca's frozen corpse collection is badass. He thinks it's impressive. It nearly makes him jealous and wants a collection like this of his own. Francisca is flattered by what Marx thinks of it.

This helped Marx and Francisca become close friends. Marx gets along great with the mage sisters in general as he loves how wildly chaotic they can be, but he likes Francisca the most out of the three. That's certainly different from just about all the other dream friends, who definitely like Flamberge and Zan a lot more than Francisca.

As one could guess, Marx's opinion on Francisca's collection doesn't get him a lot of brownie points. Even Magolor had to be like "bruh" at him. But ultimately, it no longer becomes surprising to some people, since Marx is notorious for often having really absurd opinions.

Kirby himself politely disagrees with Francisca's decision to keep her corpse collection. But Kirby is also Kirby and is still more than willing to be Francisca's friend anyways. Gooey is on the same boat.

Overall, Francisca doesn't get many brownie points from most of the other dream friends with her decision to keep her frozen corpse collection. Obviously her fellow sisters have her back and let her keep it, and Marx eggs her on, but she's otherwise not very well-liked.

Kirby, Magolor, Taranza and Susie all sometimes visit the mage sisters at their home in the Jambastion fortress, but they deliberately avoid the room that has Francisca's trophies in it. Taranza is also too afraid of Francisca to really consider her a friend, unlike his fellow wave 3 pals who can consider her a friend. Taranza likes the other two mage sisters a lot, though.

It's not all bad, though. Even though she insists on keeping her collection, she does have some standards when it comes to it. For one, she'll definitely never try to turn Kirby or any of his friends into ice cubes for her collections. She'd be killed as punishment if she tried that.

She won't try to kill anything in Popstar to include in her collection, at least. Not that just, but she promised to Ribbon that she'll never go after anyone in Ripple Star to include in her trophy collection.

She also promised to Susie that she'll never try to mess with any HWC employee to make a frozen trophy out of, because she knows that would make Susie instantly turn on her and hunt her down. Besides, Francisca likes Susie, and wouldn't want to upset her anyways.

Francisca would only go after people in different planets that have no affiliation with Kirby or any of his friends whenever she decides to make her collection bigger. That should be fine enough by Kirby and co, even though many of them wish she'd just stop doing it altogether because they think it's disturbing in general. She, however, is simply too proud of her collection to give it all up.

But despite having this insane hobby, Francisca wishes well to all the other dream friends, even if she darn well knows that many of them don't like her. She's not going to mess with them.

It helps that she's the least interactive and outgoing of the three mage sisters. Sometimes, the three mages will split up to do separate things, as they can be in different places, and Francisca is the one to leave the Jambastion fortress the least often.

Thanks if you read this entire post! Francisca is my favorite out of the three mage sisters, as I personally think that she is the cutest of the three and I just find the whole deal with her trophy collection to be deviously amusing. Enough to make a lot of headcanons out of it.
