WeightLossIdeas1 It's easy to get caught up in "official" portion sizes. For vegetables, the "official" size is 1 Tbs per year of age for kids 1-3. But since when has any toddler anywhere followed the "official" recommendations? Certainly not mine. I like to think of the "official" portion size as a good starting place. But watch your kid. Is it too much or not enough for them? For foods they never eat, put a "disgusted" serving size on their plate. For that food they pound (strawberries, anyone?), Load them up. It's okay for kids to eat as much as they want at every meal and snack. It's okay if they eat almost nothing. It's okay if they eat as much as you. FYI, the official recommendation is 2-3 servings of fruits and 2-3 servings of veggies per day. But as we know - they may not eat veggies for 2 days and then eat as much as you on day 3. It's okay. And it's okay to sub fruit for veg if they are going through a rough patch. Stay tuned for protein portion sizes tomorrow! Posted @withregram • @kids.eat.in.color No reason to shy away from talking to our kids about what we eat. I have a salmon allergy. My kids don't. So I'm open about the fact that my body doesn't like salmon, but their bodies do like salmon. Two people in our family don't do cow's milk, two love cow's milk. We talk about the fact that different people need different foods sometimes. Same goes for medical conditions. We can explain the conditions to our kids and explain what foods we need to eat or avoid so our bodies can work best. The only time that this becomes risky (according to the evidence we currently have) is when we talk about weight loss diets with kids. When we do that our kids may be less happy with their own weight and may likely to diet to lose weight. And when kids go on diets, they are at much higher risk of developing an eating disorder or disordered eating. So I don't recommend talking about weight or weight loss diets with kids. Weight is not a medical condition. If you have a medical condition, let's say high cholesterol, and you are eating a high fiber diet to treat that condition, you can talk about cholesterol and fiber. If you happen to gain or lose weight and your child asks about it, you can say that your body stored or used up some energy. We're so used to thinking about diets as being about weight - but there is so much more about health to explore. Our kids give us the gift of having to think about our bodies, and health, and what we eat in new ways that aren't focused on size. BTW, if I had a medical condition that required trail mix only, my kids would be angry if they could not also follow the trail mix diet. #kidseatincolor https://www.instagram.com/p/CM3YiTsHifB/?igshid=1elcbz0mhh94b

#repost @parentingnfamilies42day @downloader_ __ "Why doesn't that mom just tell grandma it's her kid and grandma needs to stop pressuring the child to eat 2 bites?" I see LOTS of zinger responses that families are supposed to use... "We parent using SCIENCE." "I'm the mom, I decide how my kid is fed." If that's your style and you have the resources and privileges to be able to do that, then go for it. More often than not, however, I find the stories and relationships are complex. One of the most common questions I'm asked is "how can I get another person onboard." I can't really speak to that beyond inviting them to read the same things you are reading or talking to them about it openly and respectfully. I don't offer many boundary-setting strategies because I know so much depends on the situation. For example, If you're dependent on your relative for childcare and they will be verbally abusive of you if you set a boundary like "Please give my child dessert with dinner instead of after".... I would not recommend setting that boundary with them. Let's be mindful of our judgment when we hear other families struggling with knowing what to do with a relative. We may not know how complicated the situation is. #kidseatincolor All Create : @kids.eat.in.color https://www.instagram.com/p/CMxizs7MaZB/?igshid=1re7l7gzbzxw7

I was really excited to make the carrot cake oatmeal from @kids.eat.in.color today! It was great!! I made it just for me since H is staying at my moms and M is so sick she was far from interested in trying something new. But I wanted something hot and comforting since I’ve been feeling crummy too. I grew up always eating the Quaker oatmeal packets and am quick to grab for those still. But this was an awesome alternative — I loved the dates and the carrots gave a surprisingly yummy crunch. I got her meal plan without the intention of fully diving into it right now — it’s awesome, I just have a system that is at least kinda working right now and I don’t have brain space for anything new. But now that I’ve read through it, I really love her concept and could easily see how it would save so much time! So I have worked a bunch of her recipes into my meal planning for the next few weeks. And this oatmeal will definitely be on the menu again when the whole crew is around! #kidseatincolor #breakfastformom https://www.instagram.com/p/B8PUgfJFvTt/?igshid=tcjg8s9kf8cn

This is great information from @kids.eat.in.color — Let is know what you think about this article ⤵️ ‘ ‘ ‘ “Do you name foods ‘grow foods’ and ‘whoa foods’?” Someone asked this in the @kids.eat.in.color question box. Actually, no I don’t. Because kids can actually grow quite well on "whoa foods." They have calories, they have nutrients. 🤔⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ I like to be as accurate as I can with my kids at their age level. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Big Macs absolutely help kids grow. Soda absolutely contains energy, which can help kids grow as well. And then there are super "grow foods" like dairy, which really needs to be eaten in moderation, if at all. So, I’m personally uncomfortable with the idea of “grow foods” and not grow foods. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Instead, for preschoolers, I talk about what foods do in our bodies. I use actual nutrition principles and make a message that is understandable to a 3yo. Then I model “sometimes foods” in our family menu (but rarely discuss it). Here are my basic messages:⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ 🍞Sugary foods, grains - helps us move and run⁣, give us energy⠀ 🥚Meat, eggs, beans, dairy (protein), nuts - make our muscles strong⁣⠀ 🥞Coconut, avocado, olive oils and butter (fats) - help our brains think⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ For fruits and veggies, I usually break it down by color. Although this is not accurate for every single veggie, I think it’s a good framework to get started. ⁣⠀ ‘ ‘ ❤️ Red: gives you a strong heart⁣⠀ 🧡 Orange: helps you see in the dark⁣⠀ 💛Yellow: helps your body heal cuts⁣⠀ 💚Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness⁣⠀ 💜💙Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain⁣⠀ 💟White: gives you energy⁣⠀ ⁣’ ‘ Do you have a favorite nutrition message for your kids?⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ ✨Need help getting your kids to eat veggies? Am I in the wrong place, or is it just that everyone on Instagram is hocking shit now? There used to be some independent people who were making money, but now absolutely everyone is sponsored by a big company and is shamelessly peddling shit.
Even ones who are being selective, say kidseatincolor, are slipping. Yesterday she was promoting eggs with a sponsored post, and I’m sure she believes eggs are healthy and good but you can tell they’re pushing with some scripted shit they have to say. I’m all about people selling their own products (she had a program she’s developed and sells), but the corporate shill is not my favorite.
I guess I’m not supposed to care and I know I’m always being sold shit, and people definitely need to make money and don’t need to entertain me for free. The one that makes my eyes roll harder is the way the popular grammars all plug each other even when they don’t have anything in common. I think they must all join these copromotion groups or something. Faaaaake.

@kids.eat.in.color Let's talk broccoli. What does it do in your body? Why say "it's healthy" when you could say "it does this specific thing" in your body. There is a lot of power in slowly building a strong connection with kids so that when they grow up they understand foods do real things in their body and that's why variety is important. Plus talking about food can be so helpful with kids who are hesitant to try a new food. If you do have a picky eater, my free child feeding guide in my bio can get you started on improving eating. I managed to snag some @leafcutterfarm sprouts for this photoshoot - they are new hyperlocal farm in Hyattsville, MD. We THINK telling our kids some foods are "bad" will make them eat less. But in reality, it just makes them want them more.⠀ ⠀ Maybe you, like me, want your kids to eat less of these foods...a LOT less. So what can we do?⠀ ⠀ Here's what we do in our house: . 1) I mom-up. Me and my hubby are in charge of food at our house. Our kids don't decide what's served. We don't serve "play foods" a lot. And we do this in a way that our kids don't feel restricted. . 2) I don't say any food is "bad" or draw attention to them. . 3) I serve play foods along side all other foods to make them less special.⠀ 4) I serve play foods. Now and then. And keep them from becoming a "thing."⠀ Play foods include heavily processed foods, fried foods, and foods with a lot of added salt and sugar. ⠀ And I do enjoy these foods sometimes myself. I'm team salty 1000%. How about you, salty or sweet?⠀ #kidseatincolor . By @kids.eat.in.color ⠀

#repost @kids.eat.in.color ・・・ "I'm concerned about my 4yo niece," she confided in my DMs, "Grandpa offered her chocolate and my niece⠀ said 'I don't eat chocolate, it will make me fat...'" Oh my heart...⠀ ⠀ I've struggled writing this caption. Because I think this goes so far beyond "sugar talk" with our kids. It goes to the core of us, as adults. Are we accepting the messages of society that there is just one "okay" body image? That there is just one "best" diet? What does our core say? Does it say:⠀ ⠀ I am bad if I have a certain body shape?⠀ I am bad if I don't eat a certain way?⠀ I need to feel better than that other mom by feeding my child "healthy"?⠀ I am scared my child won't be healthy?⠀ I am a bad parent if my child becomes fat?⠀ I don't like myself or my body?⠀ ⠀ We want to pass on health to our kids (at least I do!) I think it's easy to think "If just I tell my kids what is healthy, they will be healthy." For me though, it's the core beliefs that end up having a bigger impact on the kids. ⠀ ⠀ We can change that though. We can hear ourselves talk and ask ourselves if we need to adopt new ways of thinking about ourselves and about food. When we stop judging and start accepting ourselves, we open up a new way of speaking about food that will help our little ones have a good relationship with food.⠀ ⠀ If you need some Inspo on taking a new approach to loving yourself, I recommend @meg.boggs and @thebirdspapaya. and @danasuchow for talking to kids ⠀ Which color candy is your favorite? Mine is red 99% of the time - but I'm partial to blue m&ms. 💙⠀ #kidseatincolor⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ https://ift.tt/32VVmIQ

#repost @parentingnfamilies42day #kidseatincolor DM today: "So I've heard parents say kids choose what to eat and I'm just not sure I want my kid eating junk food...but I'm afraid to say 'No.'" It is 100% okay and reasonable and helpful to say "No" to your child's requests for foods. It's the parent's job to decide what foods to serve and when. I'll let you in on a secret of mine. I RARELY make a meal based on my kids' in the moment" requests. It's because I'm in charge of what food is in my house and served in my house. If my child wants something, they are free to ask and I can tell them when I will serve it. If it's pretzels, I may say "sure, I'll put them with your lunch tomorrow". If it's candy I may say "Okay, we'll have it with dinner later tomorrow." I may also just say "That's not on the menu right now." My kids might choose to serve themselves pretzels every day for 2 weeks for every snack and meal. Or they may choose to eat candy several times a. day every day. That's not what's best for them and it's not their job to decide what foods are best for them. I choose what is served and sometimes I include the fun foods they ask for. As they get older, I can ask for their input on what they want on the menu, that way they can start to learn independence. If you need more ideas for getting them to try new service, check out the guide in my bio @parentingnfamilies42day All Credit go's to @kids.eat.in.color. #kidseatincolor https://www.instagram.com/p/CMMSVCxAki8/?igshid=1cz0xui93y4p9

I loooove my frozen berries in a super shake and love what @kids.eat.in.color put together here. It's a myth that fresh is better than frozen fruits and veggies. I get this DM at least once a week: "I heard you say frozen veggies are good and now I don't feel like a failure!" The fact is, fresh and frozen foods have different benefits over the other. Both provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plant compounds, and fiber. Whatever works for your family right now is what's best for you. 🥦 If you're struggling to get your child to eat fruits and veggies of any kind, my free picky eater guide is in my bio @kids.eat.in.color 🍓 Data from FoodData Central Survey FNDDS accessed April 20 2021. 😊 #kidseatincolor https://instagr.am/p/COvcDmBrWqA/
