Riku is Always Smiling at Sora
Can we take a moment to appreciate that Riku only smiles or laughs mainly when Sora is around.
Tumblr media
Not saying he doesn't with other characters but he mainly does that with Sora.
Tumblr media
He usually is just serious around them and could be considered rude like in the land of dragons when the others called him rude.
Tumblr media
In BBS, when Riku is talking to Terra he is seen smiling because he is talking about wanting the strength to protect the most important person to him (which is heavily implied to be Sora)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then when Sora calls for Riku, he waves with a smile.
In KH3, he is shown to be talking about Sora with Mickey about how he is able to feel better in the darkness because of Sora. And he smile at that thought.
Tumblr media
Then in these manga panels, Riku is smiling because he is with him and he's enjoying that they're together along with their honest conversation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then he is always laughing whenever Riku is with him since he is the one who always cheers Riku up.
Tumblr media
During KH3 end battles, Riku goes over to Sora to make sure he is okay and seems to smile at Sora to help him feel better.
Tumblr media
Nomura even changed the expression of Riku in Remind to not smiling at Naminé.
He smiles/laughs...
Whenever Sora is there
When talking to people about Sora.
When talking to Repliku in KH3.
at Mickey because he helped him through some things. And their dynamic is great.
Sora has Goofy and Donald, Riku got Mickey.
But Riku smiles the most as Sora and it's honestly really cute.
However, it can go the same way for Sora cause he acts sillier and is way more concerned about Riku.
Sora always wears his emotions on his sleeve to everyone and often makes people laugh, but when he's with Riku it's saying something.

yknow i'd always had a headcanon that sora was a lot more proficient with magic than riku, but playing Re:CoM really solidified that for me with the difference between their playstyles.
when you play as sora, you have this massive variety of different sleights and spells and summons you can use, which from an in-world perspective, could read as him just... modifying the spells for his own use. I think it would be super funny if he talks to like. Aqua for example and she's like "wait how did you do that. thats not supposed to happen, that's not how magic works-?" but anyway! the point is that Sora's gameplay has a lot of variety and magic woven into it
whereas with riku, not only can he not edit his deck, but almost all of his sleights are locked behind Darkness-Murder Mode™️. So a lot of Riku's gameplay is just "hit things until they die" (also i feel like there's something to be said about the difference between Holy Spiral and Inverse Spiral, which are basically the same attack except HS is when Riku's not in Dark Mode and IS is when he is, something about HS lasting much less time than IS because riku's light magic isn't as powerful perhaps?)
ANYWAYS. i just think it's neat :)

love thinking of sad traumatized edgy characters in normal situations but not in a ‘how do you think X event affected the way they handle everyday life’ kinda way but in a ‘what do you think 358/2 days rikus hair care routine is like’ kinda way

it's all been said before but something something riku is the element of change and kairi is the element of stability cuz riku wanted to leave the island above all else while kairi didn't really care she just wanted to stay with her friends above all else no matter where she was (and of course sora was kinda in between) something something the moral of the story here being that some things in life have to change while other things are meant to last and this is why both kairi and riku are both so important to the heart of this story cuz they represent that duality. we can't stay on this tiny island forever as innocent kids. but the island and what it means to us will always be there. y'know

Have they ever actually explained what the whole anti-sora form thing is all about? I always assumed it was a weird side effect from him being a heartless for a bit
Is anti-form originated from when Sora got turned into a Heartless? Nomura: Story-wise, yes. Drives are very strong so anti-form exists as a side-effect of using too much power. System-wise, I wanted to create something strong but troublesome.
...is what Nomura said in a 2006 interview.
iirc the fandom speculation is that since Anti-form happens if you use other drives too much. It might be that Sora "uses up" too much light at once and thus the darkness in him takes over for a moment, something along those lines. It's almost like Sora is more easily susceptible to the darkness after being turned into a heartless, and even Kairi's POH power couldn't remedy that.
With the appearance of Anti-Aqua in KH3 it also has the implication that Sora loses hope/succumbs to the darkness during a tough fight. And while we are on the KH3 topic:
There's a form that appears called "Rage Form," which reminds us of the "Anti Form" from KH2. What is the setup behind that? Nomura: The forms in this title are very different from that of KH2, so we decided to change all the names. Rage does indeed have characteristics that are reminiscent of Anti, but it's basically a separate thing setup wise. Anti is based on Sora getting completely stained in darkness, but Rage doesn't go quite that far. It's based on him going into a rampage state, controlled by feelings of anger.
from a 2019 interview.
Interesting that even though Sora has a shorter fuse and is angrier in KH2 (idr if it has been confirmed or if it's fanon speculation that it's due to Roxas in his heart influencing him and his heart remembering the pain and anger of CoM), it is only in KH3 where he is shouldering so much he snaps into a literal rage, specifically if he is damaged enough. He doesn't lose hope (yet), he gets pissed.
Considering the implications that there could be a part of Vanitas still in Sora it is currently hard to say if that rage stems purely from him or if Vanitas is feeding into it in some way.
It is actually one of the things I am hoping for the most in KH4. The build up has been going on for a long time, both through these forms and through his companions saying hurtful things to Sora repeatedly (it's often in a playful manner but that doesn't mean...it isn't mean. And KH3 really hammers this home.) and Sora's "Without my friends, I am nothing." may have scratched the surface but there's so much more to it.
Sora has a lot of pent up hurt inside him, Aqua being a direct parallel ingame. Aqua eventually succumbed to it because she was alone for so long. And now... Sora is alone, possibly missing memories or heart connections he needs to hold himself together. Yeah Strelitzia is there but that might not be enough. But let's stop here I could go on for hours.

So people blame Terra....
And it's not his fault.
Like essentially he wanted to do good and he wanted to help people.
Maleficent manipulated him like she did with Riku.
Terra and KH1 Riku are actually similar
Xehanort was probably a mentor he looked up to and he didn't know he was bad. Like from the viewer everyone is like he screams bad guy it's Xehanort— but Terra didn't know this.
Xehanort planted the seeds in his head and had him use darkness. Though Darkness isn't inherently evil, Eraqus was only worried.
Tumblr media
Because of DR events where the darkness killing all of Eraqus and Xehanort's friends, Eraqus was worried for Terra. Xehanort , however, by experiencing that and seeing that went astray after the fact. Eraqus however knew this about Xehanort.
Maybe he thought he changed with putting Ventus in his care.
But because of DR events, Eraqus was worried and wanted him to be safe (he viewed him like a son) and would rather him just stay at the land of departure.
That's why he tasked Aqua with watching him. But at kh3 Eraqus admits he shouldn't have done what he did.
Tumblr media
First seeing BBS you think oh he's a bad teacher when actually he's one of the better ones. He's just worried they will turn out like what happened in his and Xehanort's past. He only knew darkness as bad at this point too, they didn't have anyone like Riku who is in the light but also used Darkness for good
He keeps Ven sheltered, asks Aqua to bring them back and watch over them, and has Terra go out to prove Eraqus is wrong.
But by having them leave, Xehanort takes advantage of it.
Eraqus admits he was a foolish teacher and asked so much of them.
Tumblr media
The reasons Terra was different from Riku is that he knew that darkness was bad and didn't want to use it. He then uses darkness to protect Ven something Riku probably would have done and that's when Eraqus realizes what he did was sorta wrong too and that he shouldn't have raised his hand against them.
However, Xehanort, takes that opportunity to attempt and kill him as Eraqus hides in Terra's heart.
Tumblr media
Xehanort set the three of them on a path that led to distrust and separation.
It's no one's initial fault. It's bad circumstances.
After the final battle, Aqua saves Terra by sending him and her armor to the world of light.
Tumblr media
And before anyone says she shouldn't of done that because he ends up causing his problems with Xehanort obtaining his body, Aqua didn't know that would happen.
Literally none of the characters knew the outcome of things. They didn't know Xehanort was filled with darkness, trying to sway them. Ventus lost his memories from being split from Vanitas.
They trusted their master for some reason let Xehanort around, that's the only thing I honestly really question.
He probably was just wanting to reconnect with their tragic yaoi
I see people hate on Aqua too but it's not her fault. She didn't really let being Master go to her head, she just wanted to do what was right and what she was told. Again because of separation there was distrust.
Tumblr media
Anyone it's just Xehanort's plan, no one is at fault.

The "Kairi Problem"
Hey guys it's Kairi day I'm gonna go on a long rant about how sad I am that she kinda sucks as a character.
To start I want to say that I absolutely adore Kairi, and that this isn't meant to be me hating on her, because I do really love her as a character (I literally stole her name for heavens sake). I just believe that there are a lot of problems with her character I need to get out of my system.
Ok, let us begin! First off, and the main issue with her for me is her pure reliance on Sora, and how much that really has damaged her character. Kairi is best when she's not around Sora. For instance, her conversations with Lea in KH3 are some of my favorite parts of that game. Their dynamic is so fun, and I wish they had more screentime together because they have the potential to have this sibling relationship that would be so wholesome. Along with her other interactions with characters, she could have such a great friendship with Aqua, seeing as Aqua will be teaching her how to better herself with the keyblade, it would be great to see more of their interactions.
HOWEVER! These are the only 2 meaningful relationships Kairi has outside of Sora. And even then, Sora makes up 80% of her interactions. Not even her and Riku talk much after KH1. They hardly even talk in Melody of Memory, a "Kairi game" where she is hardly playable. Not only that, at the end of that game Riku basically told her that she needs to stay home and let him to do work to find Sora. This to me is a big misstep in the writing for her character.
Kairi has self-confidence issues, one of her battle lines in Re:Mind is literally "please work". She has no faith in her abilities, but so much can be done with that. She can have an arc about believing in yourself and coming into her own and learn to stand beside Sora and Riku, not just letting them protect her.
This is partially due to her lack of screentime. She's never really been the focus of anything, she's just Kairi. The prize. That's really what she is, she's like the princess in another castle. Just "the girl". And that's a terrible thing to do with her character because unlike Peach, the princess in another castle, Kairi doesn't get the chance to rise above that label. In 21 years you'd think she'd be given something, anything really. I think that's why her kicking a heartless in the KH TV show pilot made me, and probably others, so excited. She did something! And it was cool, that's what we needed. Something cool.
So why am I talking about all this? The fandom has made jokes about Kairi being a plank of wood for years, it's no secret to anyone she's been given very little in terms of character. I guess my question is why? Why is Nomura giving this character with an interesting backstory and an interesting set of powers with seeds of a character if you squint such little time? Not only has she been around since the very beginning, but even characters who we know much less about than her are far more fascinating. I like to compare her to Yozora, who is a character we really know nothing about however we know he's powerful, and we know he has a goal. And I can assume he will deliver on both of those things even when we know more about him. Kairi on the other hand has had very few cool moments, has no goal, and just MIGHT be powerful. I mean you'd think having a princess of heart, a topic that has been covered in multiple games and will likely continue to be touched upon, as a main character would be amazing, right? Well, she's hardly ever mentioned to be a princess of heart and all we know about her powers is that she can bring back a heartless Sora in Kingdom Hearts 1. And that's it, that's all we know.
And I haven't even gotten into the whole thing about the Destiny Trio, the main trio in this series made up of 3 very important characters, feels more like 2 duos. It's either Sora and Riku or Sora and Kairi, not "Destiny Trio". And we know Nomura can write good trios, even while having 2 of the characters have moments together. So why can't the Destiny Trio have this? The 3 of them hardly interact without one of them overshadowing the other. For instance, the Riku and Sora KH2 reunion.
Sora is confused on how Riku can be here when he looks like Ansem. Kairi shows Sora that it is in fact Riku, and Sora and Riku have a moment. Then Kairi does nothing for the rest of the scene. In every case, that is a Riku and Sora scene where Kairi is just there. And this happens time and time again, where Riku or Kairi is put to the side so they both can have their moment with Sora.
And now it's time to talk about the scene where Xemnas kidnaps her. This scene is just... GAH I HATE IT!!! Xemnas just snatches her and then somehow, she's just passed out and gets killed. Not only that, but the reactions from other characters are also so lackluster. Sora does his "Kairi!" thing, and if anyone else were to have reacted I would say it should be Riku and Lea. Of course, Lea was dealing with his own troubles during that scene, seeing his best friends again was definitely something that would be more important to him, however he and Kairi spent time together growing a bond and training together, you'd think he'd at least go after her a little more? He does nothing! The only person that reacts to it is Sora, which is so sad since you'd think even Roxas would care a bit, since he and Kairi had that brief moment in KH2 where Roxas and Kairi's minds connect. You'd think any of them would have more of a reaction than they did. And she herself just sits there and struggles a bit. She's got another hand she could use to summon her keyblade again and swipe at him or do anything else that isn't absolutely nothing.
This whole scene would have been better if they had waited longer for Kairi to get taken, maybe she goes into battle with Sora, Riku, and Mickey when they fight the norts, but Xehanort swopes down and stabs her with his keyblade or something. If that happens, we could get more of a reaction from Riku. Really anything that isn't what we got would be better.
Throughout this whole series Kairi has been pushed to the side time and time again, and I highly doubt that'll end any time soon. With a new saga coming and more focus being placed on the Foretellers and what came before, Kairi will likely be once again pushed to the side lines while other more interesting characters take the front lines. It's a very sad fate for a character that has so much potential she'll never live up to due to a lack of interest from the writer.

fuck akuroku as a ship btw not only because its pedophilic because thats obviously a huge issue. but also i think we should be able to have platonic relationships with the same amount of devotion as any romance. not everyone who loves each other is in love DEREK.
#not trying to downplay the issues with it being pedophilic because thats actually a huge issue#context for my non kh moots#as of kh3 lea/axel is roughly late 20s#maybe early 30s depending on how old he was in bbs#and roxas is (physically) 14-16 (hes only been alive for a bit over a year#but also what i want to say#axel and roxas have an amazingly written relationship#theyre two of the strongest characters in the series in terms of writing honestly#their dynamic in canon is two best friends who at the end of the day just want to stay together#but due to circumstances and also a bit of axel keeping secrets shit falls apart#when you get to kh2 roxas is gone and axel will do literally ANYTHINNG to bring him back#he doesnt care about his own life or soras or anyone else who stands in his way because he is going to get his friend back#axels role as an antagonist later in kh2 comes from his devotion#he wants roxas back. he says himself he wanted to see roxas again because he made him feel as though he had a heart#in the end he gives up and dies to protect sora#and i think a lot of people take 'he made me feel like i had a heart' out of context to say its romantic#at face value its easy to interpret it that way but in context he goes on to say 'its funny... you make me feel the same' to sora#the way i interpreted it at least wasnt that he was in love but that both roxas and sora's love for others radiated onto him#if we look at days (i know. sacrelige for a kh2 discussion. fuck you) axel is constantly questioning why roxas acts like he has a heart#he straight up asks him why he does that and roxas is confused. thats just how he is#<- context for that conversation is that roxas is upset on xions behalf because saïx called her a mistake#what he means by 'having a heart' is feeling things and caring about things and there is no inherent romantic connotation#he means in the most literal sense that roxas made him care about things. we dont know what exactly that was referencing in kh2#but we can take a pretty good fucking guess#but lets look at com for a second because theres a scene talking about the other half of that line#axel goes behind everyones back to do something to help sora and naminé and after he does he is SHOCKED to realize hes enjoying it#and then he says 'you really ARE something!' about sora#at least as of kh2 what they meant was feeling emotions. roxas made axel feel as though he had emotions. he made him feel like he could feel#anyways. what im saying is axels line could be taken as something romantic but i think its more interesting than that#i dont have enough tags left to continue word vomiting sorry </3

drawing gula thinking about how the foretellers have parallels to the seven sins WHATEVER and how people keep drawing conclusions to luxu being Lust in this equation but i had an epiphany and MAYBE this has been discussed already, idk i try to stay away from kh lore because it's all Ridiculous, anyways luxu isn't fucking!! lust! lux means GLORY! glory falls in line with PRIDE! which means the Master of Masters would default to Lust and my ass is over here, looking and carding through all the synonyms of Lust, digging through latin dictionaries trying to find some way to connect the anagram DEMY to it im SO fucking convinced demyx is the master of masters at this point
