We've all noticed that the end of the year can be a sparse time for new releases. I usually use this time to peruse "lists" from trusted sources. Tim Sendra mentioned a Dexys Midnight Runners (Birmingham, England) reissue of "Too-Rye-Ay". I had no idea that Kevin Rowland didn't like the original issue of this 1982 release. Now we have "Too-Rye-Ay (As It Should Have Sounded)" which is a massive reissue/remaster/addition to the original release.
But, of course, there is no Bandcamp presence for this release, but a quick search found this amazing live set on CD. One of my favorite songs, "Geno" is here, as is "Come on Eileen".
Dexys Midnight Runners have never received their own post, but they've been mentioned/tagged several times over the years: The Rumble Strips, Donny Love, Boots for Dancing or Aaron Frazer (do a search...there's many more).

La "noche salvaje" de Van Morrison se alarga. En su vertiente soul creo que esto es a lo que aspiraban Brinsley Schwarz, grandes admiradores suyos, como lo era Phil Lynott, como lo son Paul Weller y Kevin Rowland. El usuario bobglickman ha ensamblado una "versión completa" de "Wild Night" (LP "Tupelo Honey", Warner 1971). "Esta es una versión bastarda que armé a partir de la canción original y el final de una toma alternativa que apareció en la remasterización de 2008 como extra. Encontré que la parte inicial de la alternativa era inferior y diferente de la versión que se hizo en el álbum en 1971, pero fácilmente añadí el final adicional al original para hacer esta versión "completa".
Julio Viernes también es un gran citador.

294 - The Notebook
The May miniseries is over and we're kicking off June with a dose of movie monoculture with 2004's The Notebook. Adapted from the Nicholas Sparks romance novel, the film's journey to the screen attracted a range of huge Hollywood names from Steven Spielberg to Britney Spears. The tale of two lovers divided by class in the south, the film captured lightning in a bottle with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as the lovers and old school Hollywood legends James Garner and Gena Rowlands as their older versions facing dementia. Though Garner would see a SAG Supporting Actor nomination, the industry didn't recognize what would become a beloved classic.
This week, we talk about the film's double threat appeal between teens and their moms and how Gosling and McAdams recreated the film's iconic kiss at the MTV Movie Awards. We also talk about Gosling and McAdams' ascendant careers in the mid aughts, Joan Allen shouting "trash!", and the unmissable similarities between Sparks movie posters.

Incuestionablemente, guste o no, la terna David Bowie / Roxy Music / Marc Bolan-T. Rex fue trascendental para la música británica del periodo 1972- 1982, aprox. Podría hacer un listado bastante largo de grupos y solistas influidos por ellos con nombres muy evidentes (mayormente las hordas niuromantiks y tecnopops), otros no tanto (numerosísimos grupos punk y post punk), y otros inesperados ("Low" es uno de los LPs favoritos de siempre de Paul Weller; Bryan Ferry es el líder estético de Kevin Rowland; ¿a qué espera una banda mod a versionar "Laser Love" de Bolan?). Hasta los Soft Boys hacían en sus ensayos "Over You" de Roxy.

Y unos rockabillys como The Polecats, producidos por el gran Dave Edmunds, se despacharon ese frenético, n-n-n-e-e-r-v-o-u-s "John I´m Only Dancing" de Bowie. Así es la música, Dios los cría y ellos se juntan. Aunque sean artistas que en apariencia tengan poco o nada que ver algo muy importante les une: son músicos y pueden coincidir de alguna manera en cualquier momento.
Existen un montón de redes entretejidas. La música, como otras artes, no es un mundo constituido por compartimentos estancos, todo está conectado, y de eso va un poco esto de Julio Viernes. Ahora, la artista pop del momento, pasto de adolescentes, Taylor Swift, cita a Patti Smith en su recién publicado "departamento de artistas torturados", y ésta tan contenta y dándole las gracias. Además la une al poeta galés Dylan Thomas, todo un elogio para Patti.
