This is our happy beginning.
Fandom: Bleach
Characters: Karin Kurosaki, Toushirou Hitsugaya
Pairings: HitsuKarin
Words: 2.2k
Summary: Canon divergent; There is nothing and no one Karin loves more than him now. Every moment is a gift.
A/N: A gift fic for @kenpachiofsquad10 for the HitsuKarin Gift Exchange on the HitsuKarin Fanclub Discord server. Cross-posted to ao3 works/35951629.
Karin, bundled in a puffy coat, gazed at the moon suspended in the daytime sky from the gates to the Kurosaki residence. She wondered how it shined through all the light pollution in Karakura. How it retained the stamina to fight despite its more potent adversaries.
Who was she to wonder though? Karin still argued with Ichigo daily. Her anger and hurt weren’t easily snuffed. Perhaps she was like starlight, like the reflection of the moon. Burning against incomprehensible odds. Alas, even the sun would sputter out and collapse within itself. Karin wished astronomers could tell her when she was due to collapse.
Alas, Karin decided not to worry about it anymore for the time being. Toushirou was only a block away judging by his reiatsu. She saw his black sweater before she made out anything else, white head of hair vanishing against the snow. He came to a stop and pressed a kiss to her cheek. It made her feel warm like she swallowed milky hot cocoa. Smiling, Karin said, “Hi handsome.”
They looked the same those days. Karin was fifteen and Toushirou’s gigai looked about the same. Gangly and scrawny, with elbows the size of lemons she found in the grocers. Yuzu always told Karin she was always tempted to fatten him up.
He leaned against the stone wall with her. “Hi, Karin.”
“That sweater looks great on you.” Karin placed her hand on his chest, feeling the divots of the corduroy. He held her hand against his chest and grinned. “Black’s so your color.”
“Black is your color,” he told her, grinning.
“You think so?”
“Yeah.” He pulled her fingers to his lips and kissed them. “Are you ready to get going? I only have today off and I want to make the most of it.”
“Okay,” she said. “I want to go to the mall then.”
“And get blasted by the heat? Let’s enjoy the weather.”
“You’re the only one who likes subjecting himself to the cold,” she teased, touching his nose with her finger. He smiled and rubbed her fingers with his thumb. “Windowshopping seems like a good compromise.”
“It is.”
They left the Kurosaki residence, heaving off the stone wall, slipping their hands into one another’s. Karin was always ready to put as much space between her and Ichigo as humanly possible. Thankfully, Toushirou was happy to oblige. He seemed to like exploring the World of the Living, despite Karakura's reputation as a dangerous region for the spiritually sensitive. Perhaps Shinigami were used to their lives being threatened. Perhaps they were just used to battle. God knows Karin no longer bat an eye when a hollow pounced from the shadows, or a spirit rushed her.
They clung to one another. Shoulders bumping with every step. Her coat was too thick for him to leech heat from, but she always got the impression their proximity was more affection than cold. His gigai was chilly and stiff beneath his sweater, like a corpse.
Karin and Toushirou found themselves in the shopping district not long after they started walking. Maybe an hour, judging by the position of the sun sinking in the sky. Karin liked window shopping with Toushirou. She wasn’t skinny like the mannequins in the windows. Coats and shirts stretched over her breasts, pants barely managed to pass over her thick thighs sculpted by sports. But Toushirou was so petite. Delicate, like snowflakes.
She pointed at a wool cap in a window. Dragons chasing their tails were knitted into it. “This one is neat,” she said. “I think you’d look good in it.”
“How would I look out of it?” Toushirou grimaced. He insisted his hat hair was dreadful with mats the size of roadkill, but Karin wasn’t sure it looked any different. Alas, she took his word for it.
"Well, what about this one?" Karin pointed at a long cowl. It was lined with brown fur around the base and the hood, and its body was heavy leather dyed red. "I know it's a little girly, but..."
Toushirou shrugged. "I'm not the poster child of masculinity." Which was true. He wore more makeup than Karin ever knew existed: primers and sealants and liners. How Toushirou kept his eyeliner so nice throughout the day remained a mystery to Karin. Ururu's somehow always smudged and Karin never bothered with it.
"Why don't you try it on then?" she asked.
He shrugged. "I shouldn't buy it."
"You don't have to buy it to try it on."
"Well... alright." Toushirou smiled at her. His eyes had to have glitter on them"It'll give you a chance to warm up, too."
"You're so thoughtful." Karin kissed Toushirou's cheek. He smiled dopily.
Inside the boutique, they were ignored. Too young to have the kind of money that attracted hostesses to sell their clothes. At the most, they were glossed over while they looked for the cowl in the display window. When Karin found it, she plucked it off the hanger, and they found the dressing rooms tucked away in the back.
Toushirou, wrapping his shoulders in fur and fine leather, sighed and spun in the mirror. "It is nice, isn't it?"
"You look like a ballerina,"
"What's a ballerina?"
Karin hummed, wracking her brain for movies she’d seen with ballerinas. "Russian classical dancer, I think?"
"You'll have to show me later."
Longingly, Toushirou ran his hands over the cowl. The material mumbled and scraped against his palms. He sighed. Karin wished she could buy it for him. "It would be prettier with buttons. Don’t you think it would be prettier with buttons?"
"You look great in a double breast," Karin replied. She climbed onto the platform where Toushirou admired the cowl in the mirrors. She held his hand, and he squeezed hers.
"Let's find something for you to try on, Karin," he cooed, kissing her cheek.
"I'm not much of a dress-up doll.”
“You let me do it this summer.”
“Yeah, those are summer clothes.” Shorts and tank tops and off-shoulder shirts: stuff she could maneuver in. Loose and easily fit her proportions. In wintertime, Karin usually just wore leggings under basketballs shorts and stuffed, polyester coats. Nothing else felt natural.
Toushirou sighed. "You never stop being gorgeous to me." Affectionately, he laid his chin on her. She used to marvel at how much he came out of his shell with her over the last four years, but Karin only quirked an eyebrow. "Just humor me..."
And humor him she would. Karin couldn't say no to those big blues.
Toushirou shed the cowl. He tossed it over a chair, and several minutes later, he returned with a slender wool coat for Karin. They shed her outermost layer and Toushirou pushed it onto her, buttoning the double breast. Karin felt out of place. But it was pretty. Looking at her reflection, her black shirt was framed by dark leather and pale buttons. Her shorts were hidden by its long hem, leaving only her leggings visible, like pants. She looked so mature. Unnatural.
“You’re beautiful, Karin.” Toushirou rubbed her back. “Do you like it?”
“Yeah.”
“More than your current coat?”
Karin smiled shamefully. “I’m sorry. I’m just-”
“Don’t be sorry, okay, Karin? If you don’t like it then you don’t. It’s not a big deal.”
"Well,” Karin said with finality, “we tried it on. Wanna get outta here?"
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” So they returned the cowl and fancy coat and returned to the bitter winter outside. The sun was behind the buildings, behind the horizon, casting an orange glow into the dark blue sky of the city. The moon was a white piece in the sky, pale like the snow.
"Have you ever been ice skating?" Karin asked. Their shadows danced like a kaleidoscope as they passed underneath golden lamplight. She watched them as Toushirou guided them through the shopping district with absent fascination.
Toushirou hummed. "Once. Long ago, with my sister," he replied. “Before we were shinigami.”
“Your sister is a shinigami too?”
“For longer than I have been. Although… circumstances haven’t given her the power I hold. But that’s a story for another time.”
Karin hummed. It was usually best to get Toushirou’s mind off of his sister. Their relationship was rife with confusion and misunderstandings and hurt feelings. He sometimes spiraled, and he was trying to enjoy himself on his day off. “Well, do you want to try again, Toushirou?”
He grinned. "Yes."
“Awesome. There’s a rink not far from here. We can rent some skates there and you can show me some sweet ice magic.”
Toushirou burst into laughter and Karin couldn’t help but feel accomplished. “It’s not magic… but I can show you how to skate, my love."
"Tell me… what is it then?" Karin leaned against him, trying to channel the kind of cuteness he used against her frequently. Toushirou chuckled, knowing to keep his eyes ahead.
"Power like and unlike what you use… but that's a story for another time."
"Boo. You're no fun." Like pulling teeth, the same way he treats talking about anything having to do with Shinigami. If Karin was any crueler, she'd tell him how unfair it was. How much it was like Ichigo to keep secrets.
But Karin wasn't cruel like that.
They came upon the rink. Packed, like a bullpen, and Karin frowned. She hated crowded spaces. It made her claustrophobic. Irritable. And it was worse, of course, because she was looking forward to Toushirou teaching her to skate, and to the whimsy of it.
Toushirou knew that. He rubbed her back. "Hey, Karin, we can make the most of this-"
Just as he finished, a young man collided into a child with the sound of crunching ice and smashing bone. The child, a creature no older than seven, was pitched face-first onto the ice. Blood dribbled from their nose as they scrambled upright and howled with shock and pain. Karin's guts twisted at the sight.
They grimaced in unison. "Or maybe we leave…"
"Yeah," Karin agreed.
They wandered. When Karin and Toushirou wandered, they followed no one in particular. Wandering to be nowhere. But Toushirou was tugging at her like a toy. She didn't ask questions. She trusted him.
"Finally." Toushirou stopped at the edge of an icy lake. Karin cocked a brow at him. "You wanted to go skating, so we'll go skating."
He popped a piece of candy and his gigai peeled off him like molting skin. His shihakusho billowed as he drew his katana with one arm, and with the other, he held her waist.
"Reign over the frosted heavens," he said, a great, icy wind picking up like a hurricane around them, "Hyourinmaru." Karin's hair whipped like snakes in the wind, and her ears stung fiercely with the cold. She held his collar in her fists. Clung for life against him. He was so much sturdier as a shinigami. A rock. Her rock.
Toushirou whipped his sword in front of him. The lake froze, crinkling like aluminum from the flash freeze. Karin turned her gaze down to see why her feet were so cold. Frost crept up her boots, like fractals or lace. It shaped itself into sturdy, razor-sharp blades.
The wind died. Toushirou, carrying her as he walked on air, before setting them down on the ice.
Karin's legs shook as she tried to keep her balance on the skates. She grinned, holding his arms. "That was magical." Toushirou grinned back.
"Ready?"
"I am."
"We'll start slow, okay?" Toushirou slipped her hands off his forearms and into his chilly, stiff palms. He kicked off, and her ankle folded. Karin helped. "Keep your ankles straight, baby!"
He never called her baby before. Karin beamed and laughed, trying to cope with the buzzing glee overcoming her. She straightened her ankle and they took off, gliding like soaring birds.
"Amazing, you got it!" His arm wrapped around her waist and Karin felt like they were dancing as they circled and spun. "Ready?"
"Yes!" Karin cheered.
The wind picked up. Their clothes billowed, and Toushirou looked majestic with his coat rolling and waving with the gusts. Like a bolt of lightning, they took off, spinning, curling, spraying ice. It was magic. Karin was sure of it, for no mortals could witness the world spinning and blurring like sheets or messy paint strokes.
The wind died. They stopped. Karin's skin stung and her heart raced. Toushirou's eyes held hers. Gorgeous.
She kissed him. They collapsed onto the ice, the sky dark as ink, as the water below the frozen surface. Her fingers tied in his hair as they peppered kisses on one another. "I love you," he cooed, and it felt like a warm fire curing the stinging cold against her skin.
They laid on their backs, admiring the sky. Karin sighed. "This is nice."
"It is, isn't it?" His eyes seem pulled to the sky. "I wish we were somewhere where we could see the entire night sky. In the Rukongai, where I stayed before I became a shinigami, there's a dense ocean of stars."
"Like the Milkyway?"
"I don't know what we call it," he answered. Nonetheless, Toushirou turned his gaze to her. She could drown in those eyes. "You remind me of the stars. It's your eyes. They're so pale and glittery."
Karin grinned. "I hope that's a compliment." Toushirou shoved her with a scoff.
“I love you, Karin," he said again. Karin liked it. Being adored. "I think more than anything.”
She smiled at him. “Do you?”
He squeezed her. "I do."

Hitsukarin and blood MUAHAHA
CWs for violence
Karin’s mouth was filled with dog teeth and her guts with fire. Toushirou was convinced she was the devil and the most awful depths of him was fascinated by how artfully blood contrasted against her hands.
Her fingers dug into their scalp and Toushirou smiled down at her as he wiped his cheek clean.

Chapter Six: Love for the Loveless
When Vivian wakes up, she’s in Merlin’s lab and bound in demon-sealing chains. In response to the look on Vivian’s face, Merlin says “After all the trouble you caused, I had to do something to make sure you’d stay put for a while.” Then she turns to Sir Gilthunder and says “Do you want to discuss Vivian’s punishment? Not only have you suffered for ten years because of her, she’s caused you trouble in this recent incident too. ”
Gilthunder seems surprised by this turn of conversation. “What do you mean by punishment?”
Merlin starts listing off various things she could do to Vivian. “I could turn her into a toad, I could take ten years off her life- “
Gilthunder tells her to stop. “I don’t think Vivian did this to be evil. I think she did it out of love.” Everyone else in the room is surprised by that statement. He continues “I’ll only forgive her if she repents from the bottom of her heart and promises to forget about me.”
Meliodas and Merlin aren’t surprised when Vivian says no. Gowther is curious as to whether or not this really qualifies as love.
Merlin is still upset with Vivian, though. “Since Sir Gilthunder won’t punish you, I will. But I’ll give you a choice. I can use Cured Engagement or I can take a portion of your power. Which do you want?”
Vivian freaks out at the possibility of losing her power, so Merlin uses Cursed Engagement. It’s a strong punishment for Vivian, and it reminds everyone else why you don’t want to make Merlin angry.
To deal with her anger, Merlin starts lecturing Vivian. “If you had actually broken the seal, you would’ve committed an unforgivable sin! Do you have any idea of how powerful the Demon Clan really is?” Vivian replies with some defiance “Why do you think we did all that research? Why do you think we had countermeasures like the Goddess Amber?” Merlin raises an eyebrow in contempt.
“Do you know who made the Goddess Amber?” Vivian says “You did. Why are you asking me this?” Merlin responds with “Because there’s something you don’t understand about the Goddess Amber. It can easily hold Red Demons and Grey Demons, but it’ll have a difficult time holding anything stronger than that.”
Vivian gasps “What are you talking about?!” Merlin continues “Red and Grey Demons are low-level foot soldiers in the Demon Clan. There are even higher ranks than that. The highest group of demons is the one that serves the Demon King- the Ten Commandments. If they were to ever come back, they’d start conquering Britannia as soon as they could.”
Terrified, Vivian cries her eyes out.
Meliodas turns to her and says “Merlin, you didn’t have to do that.”
She responds “Was anything I said a lie?” He replies “No, it’s the truth.” When she says “Then it’s not a problem, is it?”
He doesn’t have a good comeback.
Merlin changes the topic “Captain, since you helped me out with that I should be able to help you with your request tonight.”
When Meliodas sees the confused look on Gilthunder’s face, he says” If you come by the Boar Hat tonight, you’ll see what it’s about.”
On the way back to the Boar Hat, Gowther tells Meliodas about what happens with Pelio.
Meliodas responds “He loved his mother. When she died, he started to feel a form of sadness called grief. It’s what you feel when a loved one is taken away from you. Love and sadness can come together to from grief.”
Gowther interrupts by saying “Then what was the interaction between Gilthunder and Vivian? Was that love too?”
Meliodas pauses before replying “I don’t think that was actually love. I think Vivian is obsessed with Gilthunder. Being obsessed with someone is when you see them as a fantasy rather than a person, when you’re thinking about your own fantasies rather than their wants and needs. If she wants a healthy relationship with Gilthunder, that’s not the way to go about it. He pities her. He probably feels sorry for her because he thinks she won’t ever know what it means to truly love someone. He probably thinks of that as a cold and lonely life. But he’s forgetting that Vivian hurt Princess Margaret too.”
Gowther takes a while to process all this. “I didn’t realize there could be different forms of love. At first glance, they seem so similar.”
Meliodas commiserates “Yeah, that’s emotions for you.”
Gowther says “Captain, can I ask you something? Are you in love with the princess?”
Meliodas replies “Yeah, I think I am.”
Gowther asks “If you’re in love with her, then why do you grab her in areas that she doesn’t seem to like being grabbed? From what I’ve seen of other people, they don’t consider it to be acceptable behavior for a relationship. If it is okay, then why do Diane and the Scraps Captain lecture you whenever you do that? If it isn’t okay, then why do you continue to do it?”
Meliodas stopped in his tracks with a stunned look on his face. “…I didn’t quite think of it like that. I’ll need to talk to Elizabeth about that.”

kenpachiofsquad10 hat auf deinen Eintrag geantwortet: A lot of people are mad at Merlin for keeping...
But what if having it was harmful to Ban, like meliodas trying to control his darkness after merlin split his power. Perhaps only after purgatory, Ban is finally able to unlock it’s true potential. That’s why he just used another weapon in the mean-time, cuz it made no difference what he had in his hand. Maybe Merlin was trying to protect him or others like she was with meliodas, after all, she does just want to keep everyone safe (test materials are hard to come by~)
If it was harmful to him he would’ve never used it in the first place imo. The Sacred Treasures are all made specifically for the Sins so they can draw out their full power. It’s highly unlikely that they made it to fit him 16 years in the future after developing a completely different kind of power.  Merlin said that as he is now he can draw out its full potential but it’s not like it was harmful to him before in any way from what I understand.  And it DOES make a difference. King explained it shortly after he rejoined the Sins. With no weapon at all, there is just so much a Sin can do in battle. With a normal weapon he can already use a good amount of his power. But with his Sacred Treasure, he can draw out an insane amount of power. There is an IMMENSE difference between Ban using his Sacred Treasure, even if he wasn’t able to use its maximum potential, and him using a normal weapon.

End of Year Wrap Up
This has been one of the toughest years for me, both in real life and to a small extent online too. I truly appreciate all the support everyone has shown, whether it was through reblogs, comments, or likes. To know that there are still people interested in this blog keeps me going, whether it's reblogging posts, answering asks, setting up Hitsuhina events, or writing fanfic.
Hopefully this new year will be better than the last, especially since the BLEACH anime is making it's return. Must admit, the PV trailer has definitely ended this year on a high note for me and feeling more optimistic.
For newcomers to this blog and/or fandom: welcome! I hope you enjoy your time here. It's a bit crazy at the moment with all the BLEACH news and we may lose a bit of momentum between now and the anime airing, but I hope you stick around.
For those who have stuck around since the manga ended: we made it!! The anime is coming back and it's looking like it's going to be better than it's ever been! I hope to see you this time next year with several episodes of the anime out!
Special thanks goes to these people for their continuous support through PMs, comments, reblogs and/or likes:
@xxhanabifireworksxx, @tinaillustrations, @neko-bri, @alexiethymia, @canariie, @salzrand, @whipplefilter, @troius, @im-ichihime-trash, @hh-ms-nm, @kacherokku, @ryusxnka, @lemonadethefifth, @kenpachiofsquad10, @pinkhairedlily, @kirixkiri,@iwanttobeaheroine, @soybeanprophecy, @moon-light-mistress, @hinamoria, @missrambler and @recurring-polynya.
Once again, thank you all so much everyone, whether you're liking/reblogging/commenting on posts, sending me asks, or just coming to check out my blog, it really means a lot. I hope to see you all in the new year!! :D

Chapter Seven: What They Fought For
It’s nighttime. The stars are out, and the Boar Hat is packed. People are admiring Merlin in the Boar Hat’s uniform.
She says “Honestly, I don’t understand it. Why do they like this outfit so much?”
Meliodas replies “I think you make that outfit look nice.”
She says “Should I really take that at face value?”
Merlin is thankful when Hawk steps in and says “If you keep this up, you’re just going to make Elizabeth jealous!”
Elizabeth’s blush deepens when Meliodas compliments her. Then he says something unexpected. “I want the three of you to be the Boar Hat Singing and Dancing Poster Girl Sisters!”
Merlin stops him and says “Are you expecting me to be a part of this singing and dancing?” “This wasn’t in his request. I really don’t want to do this. If he expects me to sing and dance, I’m quitting.”
Undeterred, Meliodas replies, “Well, yeah.”
Merlin changes her outfit with a snap of her fingers and says “I quit, effective immediately.”
After walking outside, Merlin finds Vivian outside the Boar Hat. She’s still pining for Sir Gilthunder. Merlin starts yelling at her and argues with her. Through a window, Meliodas notices that they’re arguing; he can’t hear what they’re saying over the noise in the background. He walks outside to ask Merlin about it. Curious, Ban follows him but doesn’t say anything.
When Meliodas gets outside, he asks Merlin why she’d yell at with Vivian when she’d already punished her. Merlin doesn’t say anything. Then he says “Is it related to what happened in Belialuin?” Merlin is steaming. She replies “What would you know about that?”
After a moment, Meliodas responds. “I was there. Not for the beginning of the catastrophe, but I saw the results of it. I saw the destruction that had been cruelly wrought. The Demon King…my father…couldn’t handle the fact that he had been outsmarted by a child. Neither could the Supreme Deity. Instead, they took it out on a city of people that had never hurt either of them. It wasn’t your fault.” The two of them are so busy dealing with their own emotions that they don’t notice Ban.  Shocked and unable to process the conflicting emotions within him, Ban silently walks away. Whether to the forest or back to the Boar Hat, he doesn’t know. He just wants to get away from this conversation.
Merlin asks Meliodas “I didn’t think you were this good with emotions. How did you learn so quickly?” He chuckles and tells her that the other girls were chastising him for not thinking first. “Having the Boar Hat Poster Girl Sisters be singers and dancers too was a bit sudden. I should’ve given you more time to think about it. Gowther mentioned something that made me think of a conversation about emotions that we had recently. Then Diane said something about consent, and Elizabeth admitted that she wasn’t completely comfortable with me groping her. It was kinda surprising for me.”
Merlin thought “He finally got the message. But how to make sure it sticks?” After a moment, Merlin says “They’re right about that. Maybe I can offer some ideas about what to do instead. If you’re asking someone to do a favor for you, ask yourself how you would feel if the roles were reversed. If you want to simply break the tension, you could make a pun about the weather or about food. You could make a joke about your cooking. If you want to spend time with the princess, you could ask her what she’d rather do instead. You could ask her what she’s more comfortable with you doing and work from there. Eventually, you might want to talk about asking the king for permission to court her.” Meliodas replies “Those ideas might work. But we can talk more about it in the morning. For now, let’s talk about something a little lighter.” Grateful for the change of subject, Merlin starts talking about King and Diane.
After all the Sins have been through, they’ve learned a lot and changed some too. It’s not said, but they’re hoping to get the happy ending that they fought for.
