Here’s What Worries Engineers The Most About U.S. Infrastructure
Water and sewer systems built in the mid-19th century weren't meant to handle the demands of modern cities, and many bridges and levees have aged well past their intended lifespan.
— By Alissa Greenberg | July 17, 2023
Christine Kirchhoff’s family were preparing to move into a new house when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017. Then the massive storm dumped 50 inches of rain on the area in just a few days, leaving two nearby reservoirs so full that their operators were forced to open the floodgates. Kirchhoff’s family had to be evacuated by boat. Both their original and new houses were inundated.
As an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Pennsylvania State University, Kirchhoff spent a lot of time thinking about water even before it swallowed her family’s livelihood. She is part of the legion of professionals behind the complex, often invisible systems that support American life: dams, roads, the electric grid, and much more.
For the last 25 years, the American Society of Civil Engineers has been sounding the alarm on the state of that infrastructure across the country. In their most recent assessment, for example, transit scored a D- and hazardous waste a D+. It’s an expensive problem to ignore. The ASCE estimates current infrastructure conditions cost the average family $3,300 a year. “Everyone is paying whether they know it or not,” Kirchhoff says.
Train derailments, highway and bridge collapses, and dam failures have become increasingly common. But which areas are civil engineers most concerned could cause imminent catastrophe, and what can we do about it? Kirchhoff and other infrastructure experts weigh in.
Water Contamination Crises are Already Here
The engineers we talked to agreed: our water systems are in trouble. Both those that protect us from water as a hazard (stormwater, dams, levees, bridges) and those that help us manage water as a resource (drinking water, wastewater, inland waterways) are in grim shape.
Tumblr media

The United States’ 2.2-million-mile drinking water and 800,000-mile sewer system was developed in part in response to the widespread waterborne diseases of the mid nineteenth century, Kirchhoff says. Maintenance has lagged woefully behind since then; some older areas, including some cities in the northeast, still use century-old wooden pipes. And many more of our pipes nationwide are still made of lead.
A water system designed for yesterday’s climate and to filter yesterday’s contaminants is especially problematic in a world of increasing demand, fiercer and more frequent storms, and “forever” chemicals. The result: boil orders, water main breaks, and sewer overflow, plus 15 percent of our water treatment plants working at or over capacity. These issues, combined with the toxicity of lead pipes, lead to water crises like the one that continues to plague Flint, Michigan.
Amlan Mukherjee, the director of sustainability focusing on infrastructure at WAP Sustainability Consulting, recommends focusing on these pipes—swapping lead for PVC or other materials and fixing the leaks that spill some 6 billion gallons of treated water a day—as one high priority fix.
Our coastline is also dotted with facilities storing hazardous oil and other chemical waste cocooned in donut-shaped earthen structures, adds Bilal Ayyub, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maryland at College Park—structures that, he notes, could be made of concrete. Because of soil’s vulnerabilities, he worries that dramatic rainfall or a storm surge could destroy these structures, resulting in a release of toxic chemicals “bigger than the Exxon Valdez spill by orders of magnitude.”
His worst-case scenario has already happened at least once, when floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey ate through the earthen container at the San Jacinto River Waste Pits, releasing noxious waste into a nearby river.
Physical Collapse is Happening Now
Meanwhile, the number of high-hazard-potential dams in the United States now tops 15,000. Many were built during or before the WWII era and have been widely neglected since then. And when it comes to bridges, “there are cautionary tales all over,” says Maria Lehman, president of ASCE and vice chair of the Biden Administration’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council. “Every county in the country has a list of bridges that, if they had money, they would replace tomorrow.”
Our 617,000 bridges include not just those spanning mighty rivers but also every highway overpass and minor link across a stream—and close to one tenth of them are significantly compromised. “If you have to think in terms of catastrophe, we’re already there,” Mukherjee says. In 2007, the collapse of an I-35W bridge in Minnesota killed 13 people and injured 145. More recently, a six-lane bridge over the Mississippi was closed for three months in 2021, disrupting interstate travel and shipping because an inspector missed a significant crack. Americans drive 178 million trips on structurally deficient bridges each day.
Tumblr media
Every day, millions of Americans travel across bridges and overpasses, like the Marquette Interchange in Milwaukee, that may be structurally deficient. Photograph By Keith Ladzinski, National Geographic Image Collection
Yet the US spends only 1.5-2.5 percent of its GDP on infrastructure, proportionately less than half of what the European Union spends, Lehman says. This long-term lack of funding has run out the clock on many solutions. Many of our bridges were built to last 30-50 years, but nearly half are at least half a century old. The average age of our levees is also 50; our dams average 57.
Now, extreme weather is intensifying just as structures fail. We’ve already seen consequences in the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, for example, when collapsing levees inundated 80 percent of New Orleans, killing hundreds, or in the failure of an under-inspected dam in Edenville, Michigan, which flooded the region and destroyed thousands of homes in 2020. The trend is set to continue: after Superstorm Sandy engulfed New York City transit, Ayyub helped study similar risks in Washington, D.C and Shanghai. His models showed widespread flooding that could swamp D.C. metro stations and in severe cases even reach “the backyard of the White House.”
The Future of U.S. Infrastructure
Mukherjee is optimistic about the use of new technology to solve some of these issues, though adoption has been slow. Drones can provide human inspectors with up-close views of areas they can’t reach themselves and reduce chance of human error; a drone on an unrelated project captured footage of the Mississippi bridge crack two years before its discovery.
Ayyub has also worked with North American freight railroads to find weak links using computer modeling, combing through thousands of stations to “identify exactly which point if it fails will have the biggest impact,” he says. Why not do the same with our power grid and waterways?
One piece of good news: in 2021, Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides $1.2 trillion over five years for the ailing systems that help American society run, the largest federal investment in US history. It was a major victory. “Every president for the last eight presidents said we should spend a lot of money—like a trillion dollars—on infrastructure, and none of them delivered,” Lehman says.
Unless it is renewed regularly, though, this funding will barely stop the bleeding. And meanwhile, across the country, families like Kirchhoff’s (who after a difficult year were able to rebuild both the destroyed houses) struggle to recover from a relentless march of disasters, many of them preventable. It’s time for the US to learn the lessons drawn from of a century of neglect, Lehman argues, and begin maintaining the systems that makes so much of American life possible while they’re still in working condition.
“If you have a leak in your roof, you go up there, find it, replace the shingles, put on a little tar” she says. “If you let it go, it’s not going to be a little fix: it’s going to be a replacement.”

The Prodigy - We Live Forever (Live at Alexandra Palace)
Live video for We Live Forever recorded at Alexandra Palace 2018. From the new album, No Tourists, this video was only released in January 2019. So i guess is this was the last film taken of the late Keith Flint.
Prodigy's Instagram account described Flint's death as the result of suicide. "The news is true, I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend, I’m shell shocked , fuckin angry , confused and heart broken ..... r.i.p brother," said the post, which was written by Liam Howlett, who formed the group in 1990.

On October 25, 2021 The Prodigy's single «We Live Forever» turned three years — it was released on this day in 2018. That’s why we decided to share some xclusive details about the rejected music video for this track. The story began on the evening of March 3, 2020, when a weird videoclip began to spread on social media. The leak was discovered by some of the Brainkiller members — the video was uploaded to YouTube, but just an hour after uploading it was permanently removed…
We've spoken directly with the video creators (presumably) and they've told us some extra rare details, and also shared some behind the scene footage with us! You definitely won't find any of these shots anywhere except theprodi.gy resources.

Glutton for Joy

Nothing lasts forever, Katarina lamented. Joy was the most ephemeral and impermanent of all treasures. She shouldn’t be a glutton for joy and yet she was a glutton for it and more.
Their Academy days felt so far away nowadays but Katarina didn’t want to get complacent only for a sudden doom flag to appear. There might have been another sequel, or even something as simple as a post-game which Atsuko had never cleared because it was store exclusive content or similar. Katarina didn’t want to be too gung-ho about her future when there were elements of uncertainty.
At least, in the interim, she had the bi-monthly tea parties to assuage her fears.
Like the very one that she was sitting at now, having all these difficult, melancholy thoughts at. This gloom refused to yield, despite her friends around and an abundance of delicacies before her.
But it was Geordo, ever a leader with a shining smile, who took initiative. It only made sense.
The culmination of their arranged marriage and with it meant the ceremony itself. Geordo had begun worrying about inane things, such as what sort of napkin arrangements would be used. Katarina’s opinion was that fine, they can be folded into the shape of swans. She only liked swans so much, but swans were a fine idea for folded napkins. Swans were pretty and elegant but also quite ferocious… just like a certain someone.
Speaking of Geordo, there was uncharacteristic sympathy in his eyes as he offered a small piece of /blonde brownie/ to Katarina on a fork, a hand cupped beneath it. Katarina savoured how it emanated a delicious but powerfully sweet aroma. It was white chocolate flavoured with caramel swirled through, highly decadent and a little unusual. Katarina sighed and she let Geordo place the piece into her mouth.
It was excitingly, cloyingly sweet and for a brief moment, her worries of ephemeral joy fled her mind. They returned all too swiftly, though, leaving her in the same state of melancholy. Katarina’s eyes drooped once more when she’d finished the morsel.
Sighing, Geordo looked through the faces of their friends. Some were sympathetic to him – Sophia and Maria, who batted their eyelashes pityingly – but others were more readily provoked and eager to prove their affections – Keith and Mary, who both puffed out their chests, glaring.  Nicol, as always, was unreadable.
Therefore, it was no surprise that someone from the combative tribe attempted to encroach on his territory first to try to win this game to cheer up Katarina. The two started to rub elbows the same way one might rub pieces of flint together to start a fire. However it was Keith who prevailed in this sudden flare of rivalry against Mary.
Glancing between his sister and the wonderful array of sweets, Keith wondered what Katarina was thinking so hard about that she could be miserable in front of all these treats. It was up to him to pick the treat which would perk Katarina up and bring her back to the riveting conversations that they had been having about napkins.
Keith’s eyes were all but glowing as he made his selection from the table. “Come, Katarina, have a taste of this.”
Katarina leaned towards Keith simply because she had heard someone—anyone—speak. His voice barely registered within her thoughts and the mental meeting she was attending with the figments of her imagination.
Keith had selected a /blancmange/ with almond and coffee notes for Katarina to sample. The exquisite delicacy had been shaped into a castle with little parapets and turrets then chilled, but its taste was anything but cold. The coffee flavour warmed Katarina, perking her up somewhat. She felt her lethargy err away as she swallowed bits and pieces of the /blancmange/ that Keith had cut off the main body of the dessert whole. So soft that there was little need to chew, it went down smoothly; yet, she couldn’t quite kick her glumness. To Keith’s dismay.
Seeing an opportunity, Mary decided that it was her turn to attract Katarina’s attention. With a voice like hers—melodic albeit high pitched—it wasn’t that difficult for Mary to insert herself between Katarina and Keith.
“I simply cannot thank you enough,” she began as she fetched a napkin from the centre of the table, “for the carrots that you grew me.”
“Huh? Oh, yes, the carrots. The carrots that I grew for you.” Katarina mumbled.
All around, their friends held their breaths. That was easily the most Katarina had spoken all afternoon; Mary could not hide her excitement. She grinned widely as she divided up a slice of cake between herself and Katarina, placing half on the napkin.
“I made the most divine /carrot cake/ for you, here, sample some. It's certain to taste amazing as it’s a culmination of our friendship!” Mary gushed.
Katarina let herself be fed by Mary this time, who cooed as Katarina sloppily ate from her fork. Katarina was briefly warmed by the love that was soaked well and truly into the dense cake. The frosting was incredibly sweet in contrast to the subtle, earthier flavours of the /carrot cake/ itself. A smile twitched on Katarina’s lips as she savoured the undertones of the cake. A bond between her and Mary: their love of gardening, even though their niches were quite different. This cake married them both, having little sugar roses on top to complement the homegrown carrots within .
“Good, isn’t it?” Mary cooed. “I’m sure it's no delight quite like Maria’s but...oh well.”
“I’d be more than happy to help you learn some skills in baking, Mary.” Maria happily piped up.
“It’d be very much appreciated.” Mary replied.
“That sounds like it would be a lot of fun, we should try and schedule that in.” Maria agreed. “You know, I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen lately,  recreating the basics with new twists. It's been really fun, if a little challenging. In fact, I’ve brought some samples along today—Katarina, would you taste it for me?”
  “Mm.” Katarina grunted.
Maria gasped. How incredibly unusual for Katarina. Such an apathetic answer to Maria’s request. This from the noblewoman who had happily eaten dropped cupcakes!
Maria hoped that she might be the one able to get through to Katarina. Instinctively, the others agreed with what they read from how Maria’s eyes gleamed with her uniquely soft tenacity. They had all been born with a silver spoon in their mouths, but Maria had been born with a wooden spoon in her hand; if there was anyone here who could rouse Katarina from her malaise, surely it would be Maria?
Maria procured a biscuit from a platter that she had brought along. On the outside, it looked quite ordinary but Maria was proud they would be anything but. They may have looked like simple shortbread biscuits, there was a secret in the custard cream they were slathered with: it was not the usual vanilla, but strawberry instead. Maria had worked very hard to infuse the flavour of garden-fresh strawberries into the cream and she hoped that Katarina would like them as well.
The biscuit was utterly delicious; it had all the quality of Maria’s usual efforts with something else. The vanilla-strawberry cream was perfect in texture to complement the soft crumbliness of the shortbread. Katarina was most delighted by the biscuits. For a brief moment, it was like electricity; her eyes opened, and she straightened herself  slightly. Gasping, with eyes sparkling, she uttered breathless praise. She even reached over to the plate for a second only to falter and have her expression strike grim suddenly.
“They aren’t too dry, are they?” Maria asked, sympathetic.
“No, it’s not that, it’s just I…” Katarina tried weakly.
Maria was understanding of Katarina’s silence. They all wore concerned looks. Anxiety etched across their faces, but it was Maria who turned her head and beckoned Anne closer.
“Anne, could you go let Raphael know that we’re interested in more tea?” Maria requested.
Anne nodded her head. “As you wish.”
  “Thank you very much.”
Knowing that a fresh round of tea was on its way, perhaps it was time to ply Katarina with yet more sweets. The Ascart siblings glanced amongst each other. Both deeply caring for Katarina in their own way, they silently decided, unanimously, that a dual attack might pierce through the foggy defences of Katarina’s introspection.
“Oh, Katarina,” Sophia piped up, “you should try these sweets next.”
“Hm? Oh, of course, Sophia.” Katarina smiled vaguely but her eyes were unfocused.
On Sophia’s behalf, as well as his own, Nicol scooted two plates closer across the table for Katarina to try. She stabbed at the dessert that he had brought to the table—a square of sponge cake rolled in dark chocolate and desiccated coconut. Cut into, it oozed with cream and jam.
Nicol watched with muted intrigue as Katarina had the first taste. Flecks of cream and jam and coconut marred her lips as she swallowed most of the cake. It was messy, Nicol had to admit, but it felt good to have Katarina acknowledge him first over his sister. It had been his idea to bring along the /lamington/; the /raspberry and coconut biscuits/ on the plate beside were Sophia’s.
The cake was enjoyable. /It was a bit quirky/, Katarina thought, and she felt herself perk up more. But the taste of coconut was not one she was used to—here or in her past life. Naturally, that got her thinking of her losses even as she mulled over the subtle sweetness of the cake, the dark chocolate bringing a bitter tang.
/Nicol/, Katarina thought, /would probably like Japanese sweets/. He was the quiet, refined type after all. She could easily imagine him sipping green tea whilst enjoying /mamedaifuku/. That led to thoughts of her past family and everything she had enjoyed in that world.
She sighed. If only she could share that with her new family and friends. She cherished them deeply, but she couldn’t tell them about her past life. Especially if possible doom flags loomed nearer than she knew.
Nicol’s slate black eyes glimmered lowly. He glanced at Sophia and she nodded; she put her hand on her brother’s before finding her voice.
“Katarina, don’t forget to try the biscuits, too, I adore them.” Sophia shyly piped up.
Katarina blinked slowly. “Y-yes, sounds nice, thank you.”
It was good to hear yet more words come from Katarina’s mouth. Sophia giggled pleasantly. Not that she was trying to win or anything, but she wouldn’t refuse.
Katarina then attempted to pick up a biscuit and eat it. Much like with the sponge cake that Nicol had offered her, it was something of a challenge as with her absent mind, bogged down with her melancholy. Nonetheless, she did manage eventually.
Upon eating it, Katarina felt all her taste buds jarred by how saccharine Sophia’s treat was. It was clotted with jam and pink coloured icing, not to mention topped with desiccated coconut as well. The biscuit itself: all buttery, crumbly goodness as well.
Maria smiled and glanced at Sophia, “I’ll have to get that recipe off you as well.” she said.
“It would be my pleasure.” Sophia replied, beaming.
Katarina flinched to hear such a lovely exchange. In the original game, Sophia and Maria were love rivals but here, they were dear friends. Same for Maria and Mary. Katarina began to smile again, her eyes watering. Everyone turned to her, noticing that they had somehow broken through the dreary shell that Katarina had built up around herself this afternoon.
“Everyone…” she murmured. “Thank you so much.”
  They all smiled back warmly.
“Why don’t you have this too?” Alan suggested, having missed the competition entirely. “You’re better happy and eating.”
Katarina laughed. “It would be my pleasure, Alan.”
She accepted his offer of /brandy snaps/ on a plate enamelled with music notes. She happily took one and then two and three of the twills. The waffle was thin and soaked in caramelized brandy. They had a satisfying crunch when Katarina bit into them; cream and white chocolate ganache exploding everywhere. The whole group laughed, even Anne let a smile show, as Katarina grinned as she ate.

I don’t know how I discovered Kristina Esfandiari but I’m glad I did. Could’ve been one of my favorite bands shared a bill with her as NGHTCRWLR and I went for it. She did a devastating cover of The Prodigy’s “Firestarter“ for her latest album Let The Children Scream but removed it out of respect for Keith Flint’s passing. But I was really satisfied with Let The Children Scream’s utilization of industrial and noise. So down the proverbial rabbit hole I go and learned she did assisting vocals for (one of my all-time favorites) Self Defense Family’s Have You Considered Punk Music?. Now I found “Loverboy” from her Miserable project. Holy Hell are the temperatures rising. It’s the shoegaze project I been looking forever for: serious, mature, and bittersweet. Bullseye, right in the center.
There’s King Woman and Creative Adult’s Fear Of Life left to go. Let’s get some ideas for my radio show’s summer series.

German interview with Peter (May 20, 2019) on drugs, love and new beginnings
I noticed that another version of the interview with Peter which @koidivisions translated some weeks back has emerged. The newer, longer, and presumably full(?) version can be found here. I’m only adding the translation for the bits that were missing in the earlier version. Since there are quite a few of them, maybe some of you are interested in reading the entire thing.
cut cut cut and off you go
Why did Hamburg change you so much? I felt privileged that Johann Scheerer opened his door for me. He trusted me.
He said: "You may live in the apartment and use the studio." He gave me his house key at a time when not even my own family would have trusted me with a key. Yes, it was a wonderful time in Hamburg! It was a shame that there was such resentment between my management at that time and the people from Clouds Hill as, much to the dismay of my management, there was someone who trusted me; that I stayed in Germany, recorded music, and took more control.
Did you feel something close to freedom? Yes, I believe so, there were no paparazzi lurking around every corner. And doing spontaneous gigs in the Golem, this wickedly expensive place, was great. I loved it there.
For some people, you’re a gifted song poet, whereas others tend to associate you with your drug antics. Yes, they believe me to be a caricature. There are even people who are disappointed when they meet me and I’m not all fucked up. This is really sad. But, then, it used to be like that for a long time. There used to be all these negative stories about me that had a nasty pic of me attached to them all the time.
And on the few days where I was alright, they manipulated the picture, or took one of me sneezing. This really killed me. It inwardly killed me.
And everything went hand in hand… The police were obsessed with getting hold of me. They arrested me repeatedly. That made me feel as if I was a dangerous person or a threat to society. That was sheer insanity.
But you’re out of the woods now? That’d be wonderful. But addiction is an illness – a mental illness. It’s self-destructive…
How safe are you feeling right now? Difficult to say. I’m feeling safe. But if I think about it, I don’t actually know what feeling safe means. At least I don’t want to go back to where I was.
[Regarding Margate] But why did you buy a hotel there? Because it was so cheap, so incredibly cheap!
It was said to be the most rundown hotel in Kent or even in England. That’s not entirely fair. The Nigerian woman who ran it had a bad reputation because she used to kick people out of the hotel whenever they complained. But saying that it was the worst hotel… No, I went to one in Aberdeen once which was worse!
And you invested money in yours? Sure, the whole thing was Carl’s idea. He decided that The Libertines needed headquarters. He then found this old five-storey townhouse. He didn’t pay me for five festival gigs for he knows I’m prone to wasting money. The others saved their share. And now I’m one of six investors.
Our studio has already been finished, and the hotel is supposed to come about bit by bit. The liquor licence is also there already so that Carl is able to open a bar beneath the hotel. The bar is going to be called "Wasteland" like the book by T.S. Eliot who lived four doors away. His father owned a bed and breakfast in Margate 100 years ago.
It’s supposed to become something similar to Andy Warhol’s "Factory". The Margate version of it. Carl wants to gradually set it up in a way so that different artists will be able to live and work under the same roof.
You’re said to have started a company for that business. I’ve read that article, too. What a load of bollocks! It said that I was worth 5.3 million pounds – crazy! Carl was really angry when he read that since he’s the businessman among the two of us. I would be completely unfit for a thing like that.
[Regarding the cat incident] There’ve been worse stories about you. And still, you were angry about it? Sure, because it was this incident that brought paparazzi to my doorstep again. That was the first time in two years, prior to that, everything was peaceful. There were no negative stories about me. And even on this day, I was kind towards the photographers. But they didn’t like that.
They claimed that I stood there in the doorway laughing. It broke my heart cause I love animals. And I love cats.
Does the sea inspire you? Tremendously! Every morning when I step outside. The light is unbelievable and the dark, wild sea – it’s calling for me. Sometimes, that’s dangerous. I’d like to run naked into the sea.
But so far you haven’t answered the call? I will do so in summer. Due to their arctic background, my dogs are used to freezing temperatures. They can step into the water when it’s cold, and they love it. But it’s not as nice as it may sound for humans in Margate.
In what way? We get these weird weather fronts. Every ten years, über-storms are causing serious damage. Just last week, the roof of the huge Tesco market got blown away, just like that. The buildings can take a lot but there are also lots of tunnels beneath the bases of the houses which were constructed in old smuggler times. That’s why the whole thing is unstable and causes buildings to collapse. It really is a weird place, Margate.
[Regarding the Puta Madres album] It probably won’t make you rich. That’s the reason why Drew isn’t part of the band. He preferred to make money while touring with Liam Gallagher. But it’s not always about money even if I’m not less greedy than others.
But I also know what damage money can cause. I need to take care of myself so that I’m not going to suffer from tunnel vision and therefore miss the genuine things that inspired me at a time when I didn’t have any money. If we make any money with that, which would be great for us, we’re going to build our own studio.
You’ve recorded the album overlooking a fishing village in the municipality of Étretat in the Normandy. Why not in Margate? Because Carl insisted that the new studio would be Libertines only. So we went to France where the family of our keyboarder Katia lives. That was great because we were able to record the album within a few days. Just like the Beatles did with their first album: one microphone in the room, press record, play the songs, and go back home.
[Regarding Someone Else To Be] Why do you quote Oasis in this particular song? "Please don’t put your life in the hands of a rock’n’roll band" has always been one of my favourite lines from a song. The warning it includes is probably justified.
[Regarding his stance on relationships] As complicated as Brexit? That is indeed complicated for the Puta Madres as so many nationalities come together in this band! We need to move freely, otherwise the knell will sound for us. But we’ll somehow find our way to France, Spain and Germany.
Where does the funny "Puta Madres" band name which literally translates as "goddamn mothers" come from by the way ? "Ah, it’s the puta madre!" – our drummer Rafa used to say that very often in the beginning when he referred to something positive as well as to something negative or something inbetween.
I didn’t really know what it meant but thought we might use that as our band name. Everyone says that in Spain and South America and it means "fucking hell".
It’s a casual curse word like "motherfuckers". It means everything and nothing. Technically speaking, it refers to the mother of a prostitute.
Do you speak Spanish? Sí. There’s a bit of German, a bit of Spanish, and a bit of French on the album.
How are your German skills? (in German) Not that good.
Do you have a favourite German word? Radiergummi! And I also like Creutzfeldt-Jakob and Methadon.
You presumably were given the latter as a substitute during rehab? Yeah, sure, horrible stuff. Sickly sweet. I call it the bad absinth.
Do you still think about Amy Winehouse? Yes, often. Constantly, actually. I met a girl called Jade Goldsworthy, an incredible singer. She reminds me so much of Amy. She hasn’t recorded anything yet, we’ve only met. But I’m planning to release something with her. We’re working on it. Amy would’ve loved her. I’m sure of that.
And The Libertines will continue as well? Of course, forever! Carl and I are stronger than ever.
Are you working on the new Libertines record at the moment? Yeah, but it was all a bit tragic. Ollie, The Prodigy’s guitarist, came round and wanted to help Carl and me with writing and producing. The next day, the news of Keith’s death – who was also a friend of Carl’s – broke. He committed suicide. The last thing Ollie texted Keith was a picture of my dogs as Keith was a fellow husky lover. And Keith replied saying how beautiful they were. And the next day, he hanged himself. We haven’t seen Ollie since.
How did you react to Flint’s death? I listened to all the old Prodigy records. There’s unbelievably good stuff among them, sometimes scaringly sinister.
Given the many deaths surrounding you, do you ask yourself why you’re still alive? No, I don’t think about that.
There are lots of discussions going on at the moment about whether it’s appropriate for radio stations to still play Michael Jackson songs or not. How do you see it: Should we separate an artist’s work from the artist? Wow – that’s a damn good question! His songs are being played every few seconds somewhere in the world. It’s amazing music, some of the best songs ever written. It’d be a fucked-up situation if he’s guilty… A part of me would die – a major part of my childhood. I loved his music.
Did you see the documentary? No, the film might have a significant impact on me – I can’t bring myself to watch it at the moment. I need to be careful with it, it’s too important. Michael Jackson used to be such an important factor in my life. It’s similar to Woody Allen: He’s a great filmmaker, he’s got a good sense of humour. It would annihilate so much culture if we didn’t separate an artist’s work from the private individual. But it’s tricky.

Maybe hearing 'Last Resort' at the beginning of the show triggered something, maybe it's the season or me being bit more fragile in my head again. I know what some may say: “gosh that song was so long ago (like 20 years ago), there are so many great songs Papa Roach produced throughout the years, you should focus on the new material.” Sure, maybe I should. But this song is undeniably one of the songs being the foundation of Papa Roach, so I WILL say few words on the matter. I know the lyrics, they were always hitting close to home. Yet only recently they resonated deeper than deep, like some secret meaning has been unlocked. I fully understood the emotion in it and while it was always intense to sing, scream it at the shows it seemed it just hit another level when I REALLY meant those words...
It's truly special that after all these years the song and the band still have the same effect on the audience, the connection. And what a bittersweet match the concert setlist was when right after dark cloud of 'Last Resort' the acknowledgement in a form of 'Help' followed. And again tears dangerously gathered in eyes while lungs were giving out from the volume of sang words.

The mood and speed of the evening has been established. A ride just as wild as I've seen ten years earlier in not so big club in my home country. Only this time Jacoby seemed more in peace with himself, still presenting this wonderfully insane persona onstage, but this character was broken by fragile, soft human being having a banter about sense of belonging and being alive. But don't dare take it as a weakness or slowing down, 'cause there was none when he encouraged the crowd to crowdsurf, create a moshpit and... ignited a rebellion of sorts among people on the balcony urging everyone to get up from their seats (against security's advice apparently). The crowd immersed completely in the madness to release anger, sadness, pain (like in wonderful unison on 'Scars') and let loose in 'Elevate'. Which leads me to songs from the latest album. Self-destructing, heartbreaking and heavy sound was left in the past and lighter (for feet and heart) tunes overruled it. But it doesn't mean it's all sweet pop and electronic samples now: take 'Renegade Music' where drums, mimicking Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage', accelerated, gained the momentum, great fusion of music genres in this song made it a killer when played live.

There was time for beautiful tribute to late Keith Flint [The Prodigy] when Papa Roach turned the volume and temperature of the show and rock show turned into rave thanks to the  'Firestarter'. Also the show couldn't end on the better note – 'Born for Greatness'; phenomenal choice – it left people buzzing with positive emotions, with sort of soothing feeling though their bodies were tired with fatigue after damn physical show (bleeding nose included, I'm pretty sure the guy was alright after all, especially after getting a shout out and a towel from Jacoby).
Experimenting with sound and growing as a band and musicians doesn't mean that Papa Roach steered away from talking about inner demons, struggle, feeling alone. It's still there, just as other topics familiar to the audience. It's the tone that changed, evolved again. And brand new music wins hearts just the same as the old tunes – people were giving their best moshing, dancing, going crazy . It's the only way to forget about whatever bothered you, kept you down. Those have been left outside the Academy's door, put on hold so you can feel alive, even if it's for a short while.

I could describe their show in one sentence (and it would most likely give it justice or at least the sense of it): go big or go home. But it’s so worth to say so much more about this band from San Antonio, Texas.

Because it wasn’t just an opening act, support band. They offered engaging, surprising, immersive and passionate show. From machinery that could easily be part of set of Mad Max or Transformers, machinery that in fact was instruments to expressive, mesmerising performance of band’s singer [Jonny Hawkins]. Unconventional approach, pure energy, something animalistic, vocals piercing the air, loads of turns and hard work on band’s path - all these make Nothing More bruised and battered yet firmly standing on the ground construct. A beast that shows all the colours live and it’s impossible to pass it by unimpressed. There’s no stopping, intense lyrically (’Fade In/ Fade Out’ or ‘Jenny’) and unapologetic sonically  (’Go To War’, ‘This Is The Time (Ballast)’). Something else.
