To Scare a Samurai

a/n: did the new event and wrote this at 2 am don’t judge me also potential minor spoilers for day 1 of the new event

"Kazuhaaaaa, wait for meeeeee!"

Kazuha couldn't help but smile as he watched the blond struggle to make his way up the steps of the Chinju Forest. "Surely you're not tipsy from that small bit of sake?" he raised an eyebrow as he spoke, hands on his hips amusedly.

"No, of course not," Aether giggled, his red face heavily contrasting the blue glow of the forest. "Just a bit fuzzy is all."

"Right, well remember to stick close to me, okay?" Kazuha said, not buying a word a that came out of Aether's mouth. He made sure to hold onto Aether's wrist as the two walked together, accepting the fact that he'd be on babysitting duty tonight.

When word had gotten around about the "Test of Courage" being hosted by the Yashiro Commission, Kazuha knew that the traveler would show up out of interest and everything had gone according to plan the moment he saw that familiar pretty blond head. Once the two paired up, Kazuha figured they'd be able to catch up during their nice evening stroll through the forest, with maybe the occasional jump scare for the event.

What Kazuha wasn't expecting, though, was for Aether to practically scream at every little surprise they came across, constantly cowering behind Kazuha during the search for the dango milk. How an adventurer like Aether managed to survive out and about like this perplexed the samurai, but he did his best to alleviate Aether's constant fear, attempting to distract him with tales of his recent travels. When this failed, Kazuha offered him a swig of his favorite sake that he always carried around, informing the blond that he liked to take a sip to help calm his nerves. Aether was hesitant at first, telling Kazuha that he wasn't much of a drinker, but he took the drink anyway, consuming more than Kazuha was expecting. He figured it'd be fine, until Aether started hobbling around and that's when Kazuha knew he made a mistake, despite how endearing Aether looked.

"Wait, don't move," Kazuha suddenly spoke, firmly gripping Aether's wrist. He unsheathed the sword by his waist and gave the tree beside the two a light tap, barely cutting into the wood. Surely enough, a handful of firecrackers fell from the branches above, setting themselves off as they hit the ground in front of them. He could hear Aether gasp from behind him once the crackles reached their ears.

"Wowww, you're so good at this, Kazuha!" Aether said with genuine amazement. "How were you not scared?"

"I already told you," Kazuha sheathed his sword as he spoke, "hardly anything frightens me these days."

Based off of the blatant frown that Aether, this didn't seem to satisfy his curiosity. "Nuh-uhh, everyone has something they fear."

"Well, I'm afraid I don't."

He watched as Aether visibly pondered this, before a mischievous smirk that Kazuha didn't like crossed his face. "You've been holding my hand this whole time because I'm tipsy," Aether explained with a slight slur to his voice, "so you're worried about my well-being, right?"

Kazuha tilted his head in confusion. "What are you getting at?"

Before he could even think, Aether managed to dislodge himself, running off the path and making a beeline for the trees. Kazuha tried reaching for him, but just barely missed the tip of his scarf, watching as the blond disappeared into the forest.

"Come find me then!" he heard Aether call out. "Unless you're not afraid something might happen to me!"

Kazuha's eyes widened as he realized Aether's little game. Under normal circumstances, Kazuha had faith that Aether would be fine, but these were not normal circumstances. Aether was under the influence of alcohol, running recklessly through the forest to prove a point. There were still hilichurls around, rocks that he could trip and crack his head on, or worse, the cliffs at the edge of Chinju Forest. His imagination ran wild as he pictured himself reading tomorrow's morning paper with the headline "DRUNKEN TRAVELER FOUND DEAD AT BOTTOM OF CHINJU CLIFF".

He had to find him.

"Aether, this isn't funny!" Kazuha cried out as he hurried his way through the trees, eyes scanning the area in front of him, but the blue glow of the forest made things difficult. With a deep breath, Kazuha closed his eyes, utilizing any clues carried by the wind. Sure enough, he caught a whiff of what smelled strongly of Sumeru, contrasting the heavy Inazuman scents around him. Based off the intensity of the smell, Aether couldn't be too far off-

Kazuha's thoughts were interrupted when Aether suddenly jumped out from the large bush in front of him, tackling Kazuha to the ground and pinning. Once he regained his senses, Kazuha was greeted with a triumphant smile on Aether's face.

"You were afraid," Aether giggled mischievously, looking down at Kazuha for the answer he was expecting.

"Aether, stop, you're drunk!"

"Admit it, Kazuha," Aether continued, "I saw the way you were panicking." This was not how he imagined his night. "C'mon, let's just find the dango milk and- Nohohoho! Whahahat're you dohohihihng?!" The sudden fingers at his sides had caught him off-guard and his body lurched as the ticklish sensations surged through him.

"C'mon Kazuha, just admit it," Aether sang as he pinched and squeezed at Kazuha's sides, his motions quick and reckless.

"Nohohoho! Ahahaha! No ticklihihing!" he howled, managing to grab one of Aether's wrists, only to let go when he suddenly felt Aether's free hand at his hips, sending him into a new fit of laughter. "Aetheheher! StahaHAHahap!"

"Hehehe, you know what to say," Aether giggled along with Kazuha's laughter, now focusing both hands at his hips to draw out more intense laughter. "C'mohOHOHON! AhaheHEHAHA!"

His body swayed as Aether refused to let up, clearly determined to get Kazuha to admit his fear. Despite the tickling, Kazuha managed to muster all of his strength, throwing the other off of him. He quickly scrambled to his feet to make sure that Aether was okay, but this was a mistake on his part, as the blond used the opportunity to knock Kazuha to the floor again. This time, Kazuha fell on his stomach with an "oof" and he tried stand back up, but soon felt his right leg caught in an armlock, panicking when his slipper was removed.

"Wait, wait, Aether!" Kazuha cried out, but was sent into another fit of laughter. "NOHOHOHO! AHAHAHA!"

"I gotcha now, Kazuha," Aether taunted, scribbling vigorously over the socked sole.

Kazuha's banged his hands on the floor in defeat, his laughter hitting a new pitch when Aether approached his toes. "AETHEHEHER! PLEHEHEASE!"

"What are you guys doing?!"

The tickling stopped with the sound of the sudden voice, finally giving Kazuha a much needed breather. He lifted his head from where he was laying to see Ayaka's head peering over the large bush that Aether had jumped out from earlier, giving the two of them a puzzled look. Before Kazuha could say anything, she quickly turned away, walking back in the direction she came from.

"Ugh, Gorou, I told you there were no ghosts!" Ayaka’s voice could be heard past the trees.

"But what about the laughing noises?!" came a panicked voice that most certainly belonged to General Gorou.

"It was just Kazuha!"

"Oh.. well, thanks for checking!"

By now, Aether had let go of Kazuha's leg, giggling at the exchange that could be heard between the two other participants. He used this opportunity to stand back up, wiping the dirt from his clothes and putting his sandal back on, before grabbing Aether's hand and bringing him to his feet. With a shake of his head, Kazuha began walking towards where Ayaka and Gorou might be located with Aether's hand still in his own, hoping that teaming up with the other two would help keep watch over the blond.

"Hehe, you're still afraid."

Kazuha turned to look at Aether, unable to bring himself to be mad at him, especially with the smiley expression he currently wore. With a sigh, Kazuha spoke, "Yes Aether, I was afraid you'd hurt yourself. Now come on, let's go find that dango milk."
