Malleus Info Compilation part 7: Malleus, Technology and Music
Malleus has an infamously difficult time with mechanical devices, and we learn that in Briar Valley they “rarely ever see fully mechanically things”, as most of what they use is “technomancy”.
When the electronic toy from Lilia that Malleus carries with him gets wet and breaks, Cater comments “Good thing magic exists—and that you’re good at it! Should be a snap for you to fix, yeah?”.
Malleus explains, “It’s completely mechanical. It’s not technomancy. I don’t understand machinery, and I can’t repair what I don’t understand.”
Ortho help Malleus look up information on various monsters for Halloween costume inspiration and, while grateful, Malleus admits he has “no idea how he did what he did”.
He also cannot figure out how to work a shaved ice maker that Ortho gifts him for his birthday. In the Firelit Sky event, we learn that Malleus does not know what GPS is.
Malleus says, "Don't ask me about modern gadgets. Even I have blind spots in my knowledge."
In his birthday vignette Malleus explains that he is quite confidence in his ability to play string instruments, as he had been forbidden from going outside when he was younger and had had a lot of free time as a result.
Lilia taught him to play a variety of string instruments, and he says he is particularly adept at playing violins and cellos. We learn in the Firelit Sky event that he can also play the kamancheh. Cater describes the song he plays as "kinda forlorn".
Malleus says that Lilia did invite him to join the Pop Music Club with Cater and Kalim, but when he visited he made an attempt on an electric violin, and everyone who heard it fainted (with the exception of Lilia himself, who "found it all most amusing").
Malleus says he never went back to the Pop Music Club again. In Spectral Soiree, we see that he can also play the pipe organ.
woo, got the solo images with their instruments done today as well. today’s been very productive. XD
murmadia uses a alto sax as her main instrument/signature instrument motif, and xiphias uses a kamancheh as his main instrument/signature instrument motif in sodden pulse songs.
more patho questions to answer if you feel like it!! was listening to some sick balalaika tunes and it inspired me to wonder about what type of music would the characters enjoy, and if they play any instrument/sing
LET'S GO!!!!! OK!!!!!
yulia: CANON (p2) cello player soooo real so so real. so real to me. as I've said I think she could also have learned the piano and/or the violin, as her family was relatively Classic in that sense and she was incited to do Classic "bonne famille" stuff like play instrumence, be educated, read books, ride horses, etc... i think she mostly knows how to play The Classics (Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers arranged for two cellos, Bach's cello suites,...), she rarely Composes her own things because she's a lil shy to stray away from the paths she's learned, but she's getting there. she likes classical (as an umbrella term, which includes classical & baroque & romantic & impressionist music)
eva: as i've said i think there was a lot of Music in her home but she never learned to play anything; she does love to dance and sing tho, and I think if you gave her a little tambourine she'd shred that fr. she enjoys music that Makes You Move, whether it's waltzes or like very dancey eastern European folk music.
dankovsky: the #realones know he's also a player to me (bonds with yulia over being cello player and homosexual, peace and platonic love on earth). he also learned the Classics (is fond of Bach's suites honestly), but he also caught on a few folk songs his mom (also cello player) played when he was little. he rarely plays them, he prefers listening to mom playing LOL. kinda similar to yulia's ways he's not really into Expressing Himself Thru Musica but then... when he learns to welcome Emotions in his life... compose a little song he can. ALSO into classical-as-an-umbrella-term music. he enjoys his waltzes & also his caucasus folk music that mom and dad were like Listen To This Boy. Banger Of The Decade. he also has a bit of a soft spot for Armenian and eastern orthodox christian music bc it's what he heard some times growing up, and even if he's a convicted atheist/theomachist he can enjoy a little religious art.
burakh: in my own words he "wasn't musically-inclined beyond what he thought sounded beautiful, which was enough", loves music tho and I think that later in life she picks from one of the Brides or kinswomen a little khomus/jaw harp and fiddles with it. you can hear it in some of P2's OSTs, it goes like... byugyugyu... byeuyeuyeu... you know what I mean. he's not good at it for years tho. he also likes to sing. badly. lullabies and stuff... he's into Whatever honestly.
stamatwins: two for one deal, i think they learned piano as kids. if canto ostinato existed in patho time they would have Loved it. they're Also into "whatever", with andrey liking the more Experimental stuff, it makes peter's head hurt. but also peter listens to like. recording of metal scraping together. he would loooove the 2 Hours Of Squid To Relax/Study/Work To | Lofi Hip Hop | Monterey Bay Aquarium Krill Waves Radio playlist btw.
rubin: strikes me as a harmonica guy + khomus enjoyed but he's shy about it. mostly into The Music Of His People (I think he's half-kin did I ever mention it? he is to me it's obvious he is to me but my brain is blanking on the Canonicity of it bc I have so thoroughly put him in the deep-frier), classical music makes him kinda sleepy.
farkhad: To My Me he's cultured and elegant, he enjoys Most Music with detectable taste, listens to things he doesn't even like for like The Experience, and I think he played kamancheh or setar. RIP!
Conceived as an immersive fictional soundtrack piece, the release tells the story of a traveller, some centuries ago, and the rather intense metaphysical experience he unexpectedly stumbles into whilst taking shelter on a hot desert night at Zein-o-Din Caravanserai, near Yazd in Persia. Dusk envelopes the vast barren landscape as the protagonist enters the ribat, treasures of woven silks, ornaments and exotic spices glint under the flickering oil lamps, swirls of perfumed vapour dance mesmerisingly in the darkness. As the music unfolds the events of the passing day quickly melt away, and the unsuspecting traveller is plunged into an otherworldly dimension.
Utilizing an extensive collection of old Iranian records as source material, the album is an intoxicating mise-en-scéne of whispering melodies, undulating rhythms, and atmospheric sound details. Ario began the process, extracting and editing samples from old records acquired during frequent trips to Iran over recent years – during which the mood and flavour of the project began to crystallize. Once handed over to Rod for further processing and arrangement, the album took its final shape – an endless tapestry of sights, sounds, and memories that fade mysteriously into the night’s reverie. Textures seep into one another in washes of colour, and hallmarks of classical Persian sounds filter through – the slow stroll of the daf, scintillating runs of santoor, and solitary lines drifting out of the kamancheh.
thank you abel ferrara's tommaso 2019 now i am listening to mohammad reza's works with the kamancheh on this grey early winter morning and it is breaking my heart.
Here is a very short segment from my solo performance, at Canadian Music Centre.
There was a remarkable evening in March 2023 to meet friends and new faces who came to see my first solo show after three years of being away from the stage!
ZÖJ’s debut album “FIL O FENJOON” is an enticing blend of experimental, world, and folk with Persian flavours that defies categorisation. Gelareh Pour’s emotive kamancheh and Brian O’Dwyer’s minimalist drums create dreamy, intricate soundscapes.
