Malleus Info Compilation part 1: Fright, True Form and Phones
Students being frightened of Malleus is a common theme. Ruggie refuses outright to visit Malleus alone, even at Leona’s request, as, “No one’s got a clue what goes on in his head, and if you so much as LOOK at him wrong…” and “Most normal students like (Ruggie) are scared outta their wits!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This certainly seems to be the case, with Scarabia students outright refusing to go near Diasomnia (“What if we run into THE Malleus Draconia and wind up…”)
In a PE class a student comments, “What if you help him stretch and end up cursed or something?” Lilia seems to regret Malleus’ reputation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Lilia expresses surprise at Leona appearing alone to speak to Malleus, Silver explains that “Ruggie seems afraid of Malleus, though. I would not be surprised to learn he’d refused the task”. Lilia responds, “Gracious, there’s no need for the boy to fear Malleus. If anything, I wish the other students could be chummier with him.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus describes fairies as much “much like humans”, saying “we come in different sizes and speak different languages. Not all of us get along, either", and “Fae like to play tricks year-round”, which explains Lilia’s teasing of Silver and Sebek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus seems to be very much a literal dragon who has chosen to take the form of a human, much like how Azul, Jade and Floyd are mermaids in human form.
He incorporates his tail (which is “very much real”) into his long costume, Lilia says he has been watching Malleus “since he was brushing eggshell off of his head” and he mentions how he briefly considered reverting to his “true form” and swallowing troublesome campus visitors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There have been at least two references to Malleus breaking his phone: one in Glorious Masquerade where he asks the player to take a picture of Sebek and Silver to send to Lilia as his own phone is broken (no explanation given as to why), and again in a vignette where Silver mentions not being able to reach Malleus by phone because “he may have broken all of his devices with his lightning again”.

Malleus Info Compilation part 7: Malleus, Technology and Music
Malleus has an infamously difficult time with mechanical devices, and we learn that in Briar Valley they “rarely ever see fully mechanically things”, as most of what they use is “technomancy”.
When the electronic toy from Lilia that Malleus carries with him gets wet and breaks, Cater comments “Good thing magic exists—and that you’re good at it! Should be a snap for you to fix, yeah?”.
Malleus explains, “It’s completely mechanical. It’s not technomancy. I don’t understand machinery, and I can’t repair what I don’t understand.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ortho help Malleus look up information on various monsters for Halloween costume inspiration and, while grateful, Malleus admits he has “no idea how he did what he did”.
He also cannot figure out how to work a shaved ice maker that Ortho gifts him for his birthday. In the Firelit Sky event, we learn that Malleus does not know what GPS is.
Malleus says, "Don't ask me about modern gadgets. Even I have blind spots in my knowledge."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his birthday vignette Malleus explains that he is quite confidence in his ability to play string instruments, as he had been forbidden from going outside when he was younger and had had a lot of free time as a result.
Lilia taught him to play a variety of string instruments, and he says he is particularly adept at playing violins and cellos. We learn in the Firelit Sky event that he can also play the kamancheh. Cater describes the song he plays as "kinda forlorn".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus says that Lilia did invite him to join the Pop Music Club with Cater and Kalim, but when he visited he made an attempt on an electric violin, and everyone who heard it fainted (with the exception of Lilia himself, who "found it all most amusing").
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus says he never went back to the Pop Music Club again. In Spectral Soiree, we see that he can also play the pipe organ.

Malleus Info Compilation part 4: Malleus and Emotion
Like most of the students Malleus seems to be a very emotional person. Lilia describes him as “upset” and “brimming with jealously” upon seeing Sebek in his ceremonial robes (which Malleus himself has never been able to wear for their intended purpose, as people keep forgetting to invite him to important events).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus himself, however, insists he is not “worked up over it”, as “Humans always avoid me. This is nothing new.”
Malleus explains that “Fairies can be surprisingly stubborn and petty. You’ll find previous few as mild-mannered as myself”, to which Idia responds, “their deadpan humor is totally OP” (Malleus’ form of humor seems to involve a level of sarcasm that rivals even that of Leona).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Malleus become legitimately angry at campus visitors during the Halloween event. Lilia restrains him as he insists, “They need to be turned to charcoal!”.
Threats are fairly normal for Malleus, who has voice lines such as “Have you considered that I could use lightning to smite you where you stand?” and “Are you looking at my horns? You’re welcome to touch them…though I can’t guarantee what would happen to you if you did.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Firelit Sky Cater explains “Malleus has a playful streak” as he teases Grim by disappearing and reappearing in the street, with Grim trying to get behind him to shade himself from the sun.
Another time we see Malleus look annoyed is when Trey insinuates that an unchaperoned Malleus is a danger to Silk City and when an ice cream vendor teases him with “stretchy ice cream”, though he insists he “was simply impressed with the performance”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike the other characters Malleus did not meet Grim and the player at the Opening Ceremonies because he did not know they were happening; he was not invited (in homage to Maleficent not being invited to Aurora's christening in Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty?).
Malleus will often simply disappear. Despite Lilia’s assurance that “I always know exactly where (Malleus) is”, Lilia seems to have just as much difficulty keeping track of Malleus as Sebek and Silver (whom we see Malleus actively flee away from in Book 3).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Kalim comments, "I didn't know you could get lost" in the Firelit Sky event, Malleus responds, "But I am not lost, Asim. Rather, those in my entourage have lost sight of me. It's happened quite a lot over the years."

Malleus Info Compilation part 17: Malleus and Details
Malleus is the founder and only member of the school’s “Gargoyle Study Club”. He explains, “we do quite little…all I do is walk around campus”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus offers to “introduce” Silver to the school’s gargoyle statues in a vignette, showing him a rare, raven-inspired gargoyle by the front gate (in a possible homage to what the blue fairy does to Maleficient’s raven, Diablo, in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty).
Malleus becomes visibly irate when Silver says he thought that gargoyles were generally “modeled after demons and such”, and again when he mistakes a grotesque for a gargoyle (which Malleus describes as “tantamount to an insult”).
In an interesting line Malleus says that “Most of the gargoyles of Night Raven College are relatively new compared to the school itself. I believe they were added one by one, year after year. It fascinates me.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We learn that Ramshackle Dorm seems to have gargoyles of its own. Malleus explains, “They look frightful, and yet they are beings devoted to the preservation of their home. Sometimes, what you see with your eyes is the complete opposite of the truth.”
Silvers offers to gift Malleus a gargoyle for his room and Malleus starts a lecture on how “statues that do not act as a spout are not gargoyles at all”. Malleus does, however, have a statue or grotesque in his dorm room, in the shape of a dragon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus seems to have an interest in architecture in general, commenting on the “wonderful example of bilateral symmetry” that is Kalim’s home in the Firelit Sky event.
Malleus also becomes annoyed when others mistake Eastern longs for Western dragons, cautioning Lilia for saying “eastern dragon”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(for the curious: in Japanese we have two different kanji for longs (竜 and 龍) which are pronounced the same, and then the word ドラゴン for western dragons, which is literally just the English word “dragon” in katakana. According to the explanations I found, there might be no real difference between the meanings of 竜 and 龍? 竜 is simpler so it is used more often in everyday life and 龍 is used more often in names, possibly because it looks cooler. )
Tumblr media
(When Malleus says long in the original game, he uses the kanji 龍 (pronounced Ryuu in Japanese), and then ドラゴン (pronounced dragon) for western dragons. I love the solution that EN came up with by calling them longs and dragons, with long being the romanization of the Chinese word for eastern dragons (I believe?), since Japan’s kanji for dragon did originally come from China, so it’s going way, way back.)
Malleus also corrects Trey’s comparison of dragon fruit to “the scales of longs”. Vil says Malleus gave him an “hour-long impassioned speech about how longs are entirely distinct from dragons as we know them”. Lilia explains, “Malleus can be obsessive about these things”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus is voiced by Kato Kazuki. More information here:

Malleus Info Compilation part 16: Malleus, Silver and family
Silver finds himself wondering if he could ever “turn (his) blade against” Malleus and Lilia if they one day chose to fight him of their own volition, during the Halloween event.
Silver says that “Lilia and Malleus have been looking out for me for as long as I can remember. I’d train with Sebek, and sometimes Malleus would sneak out and visit us”, insinuating that Malleus' visits to the cottage where Silver lived with Lilia had to be conducted in secret.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Silver’s ceremonial robes vignette we learn that he, Lilia and Sebek patrol the grounds before Spelldrive tournaments, in case of spies. Idia says that Malleus is “game-creakingly OP”, making their efforts “kinda overboard”, and Silver explains that “Before coming to this school, (Malleus) was so well-protected that he never set one foot outside the castle without a whole cadre of guards”. When Idia asks if Malleus rules Diasomnia “with an iron fist” and everyone is scared to defy him, Silver insists that, “Malleus doesn’t need fear to lead anyone….I will do anything for the man I have pledged my loyalty to. Without Malleus and Lilia, I wouldn’t be standing here today. I simply want to repay my debt to them.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silver argues with Sebek over how strictly they should be staying close to Malleus, insisting that “Malleus deserves some time to himself”, but he questions this conviction after Sebek says “to leave him alone for even a second would be an act of supreme negligence”.
After learning the extent to which Kalim depends upon Jamil, however, Silver decides that “being overprotective must be avoided at all costs”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jamil uses Silver’s devotion to Malleus to manipulate him into fighting ghosts during Spectral Soiree.
During Firelit Sky, Malleus purchases coffee for Silver as “it might help him stay awake”, and Malleus has a voice line where he says, “Silver trains hard every morning. There’s something to be said for that level of perseverance.”
In his birthday vignette Malleus explains that he receives a birthday card from his Grandmother, the queen of Briar Valley, despite how she is kept extremely busy by overseeing the country alone in his absence. In addition to the card, she also sends him rose seeds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus says that he would plant roses at the castle in Briar Valley every year on his birthday and, as a result, there is now a large rose garden there. In his second birthday vignette, she sends him cufflinks.
Malleus also mentions that his grandmother used to tell him tales about the Scalding Sands. Malleus has no siblings, and he insists to Jamil that “one should treat their family with respect” when Jamil tries to send Najma away during the Firelit Sky event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We do not hear much else about Malleus’ grandmother, though in a chat he says that his magic “can’t even league a candle to” that of his grandmother yet, and that “the queen is leagues beyond me”.
In a vignette we get what might be the one and only reference to his parents thus far: he says "this land's forebears toiled in the hopes of giving their descendants a happy, peaceful life. I wonder if it was the same for my grandmother and Lilia...and for my mother and father."

Malleus Info Compilation part 9: Malleus, Leona and Vil
Unlike the vast majority of the student body (including the members of his own dorm), Leona does not seem to be intimidated by Malleus. He accuses Lilia and Silver of being overprotective of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In return, Lilia and Silver seem convinced that Leona and Malleus are friends, despite Leona’s protests. Sebek is less inclined towards Leona, but Malleus refuses to allow Sebek to insult him.
When Sebek tells Leona, “Silence that foul mouth of yours” in response to an insult, Malleus interrupts with “No, you are the one who should be silent, Sebek. This is Housewarden Kingscholar of Savanaclaw. He is the second prince of Sunset Savanna. Royalty is owed respect...and besides which, he may have come to invite me to a party today.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is not the only time Malleus chastises Sebek for insulting Leona, insisting that Sebek apologize to Leona again in a different vignette, despite his protests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilia invites Leona to visit anytime, and Leona and Malleus get into a verbal sparring match. Ruggie observes, “Maybe Malleus is more normal than I thought”, and Lilia says, “He’s having a bit of fun ribbing a schoolmate. This is precisely the kind of experience Malleus needs”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We learn from Rook that Malleus and Leona were on the same team during Beanfest the previous year and managed to work together to capture him, both being powerful enough to compensate for being too out of sync for “coordinated strikes”.
Silver says that he remembers “Malleus remarking that it was the first time he’d gotten heated in a long while”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also see the two princes arguing during the “Terror is Trending” event (they had been sitting across from one another at the banquet), with an unamused Vil commenting that “I don’t think they’re going to stop bickering anytime soon”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like Leona, Vil also does not seem to be intimidated by Malleus. Malleus seems to have less patience for Vil, however, such as when Vil insists that Malleus does nothing to offend the campus visitors during Halloween, and Malleus responds, “You’re ordering ME around, are you?”
When Malleus becomes enraged during the “Terror is Trending” due to visitors attempting the “Draconia Challenge”, it is Vil who notices the dangerous change in Malleus’ mood and escorts him to a private location, maintaining a defensive spell to spare others from Malleus’ wrath.
When Malleus calms down Vil calls him an “amateur”, saying, “Incidents are to be expected on stage. You can’t let the audience get you so worked up.”
Tumblr media
Malleus seems to have a certain respect for Vil, saying that he had thought Rook to be “a boorish fool, but I cannot imagine that Schonheit would select such a man as his second-in-command.”
Like Jamil during Halloween, Vil also uses Malleus to pressure Silver into cooperating in a task he is reluctant to play a part in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the player invites Malleus to VDC Malleus responds “Will you be in it? …Oh, you’re the team manager? Pity. But Schoenheit and Asim will be in it? Heh. That should be quite the spectacle.”

Malleus Info Compilation part 15: Malleus and Sebek
Sebek’s interests seem to largely begin and end with Malleus. In a vignette Sebek says “Malleus, I will do everything within my power to serve you” and Malleus responds, “I…see. Then I’ll expect nothing less.”
When asked about his interest in dating in Phantom Bride, he responds “My schedule is already packed with training so I can protect Malleus. There’s no room for romance.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sebek threatens to strike people with lighting during the “Terror is Trending” event for “mocking the house of Draconia” via the Draconia Challenge and is stopped by Cater, whom he listens to only because he had been ordered to do so by Malleus and Lilia. When Cater recommends that Sebek let Malleus “mingle with his fans a little” Sebek insists that “a man of his stature should command fear and respect, and that is why I spend every waking moment at his side, to ensure that he comes to no harm!”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sebek is happy to celebrate his birthday because it “means I’m one step closer to being worthy of Malleus”.
Sebek's prized possession is a portrait of Malleus that he “pays (his) respects to” multiple times a day. Sebek is learning to drink coffee because he is jealous of Silver’s ability to enjoy it when he, himself, does not.
Sebek says that “it is IMPERATIVE that I conquer my aversion to black coffee posthaste!” but Malleus purchases tea for Sebek during the Firelit Sky event because, according to Jamil, “tea can have a calming effect”. Malleus agrees, “(Sebek) can get rather worked up at times”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jamil tells a story from a flight class where Sebek broke a cookie from Malleus that he had been holding onto as a keepsake, and “he was inconsolable. It was kind of heartbreaking to watch”.
Malleus scolding Sebek is not unusual, and we see it happen repeatedly across different vignettes and events. Sebek redirecting conversation to center upon Malleus is very common (“Who wouldn’t be riveted by an anecdote about the great Malleus Draconia?!”) and he seems to have become infamous among the other students for doing so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is a habit that disqualifies him as a suitor for Eliza, though he only joined the event in the first place to fill in for Malleus himself. Sebek is overprotective even from Silver and Lilia's perspectives but he says he “wouldn’t dream of stifling my liege”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Sebek expresses regret over not being assigned to Malleus’ team for Beanfest Lilia says, “We have precious few chances indeed to turn a blade upon a king in our lifetimes. Consider it training and enjoy it for what it is”. Sebek responds, “But I swear on my life that I would never turn a blade upon my lord!”.
(Lilia follows with “I plan to go after Malleus quite aggressively”.) Malleus misses the meteor shower during Wish Upon a Star when Sebek insists upon escorting him to the dorm. Sebek says he trains himself “so that I can be Malleus’ sword or shield whenever he requires”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sebek also says, “My left-handedness often gives me an advantage in sparring matches. I’m not above petty tricks if they seize victory for Malleus”. And: “There’s no point in training yourself without an objective. Mine is clear: to attain power enough to protect Malleus”
In the Wish Upon a Star event Sebek says “I have but one wish! I wish for the whole world to kneel before our king”.

Malleus Info Compilation part 14: Humans, Cater, Idia, Clothes and Frozen Desserts
Malleus seems to have an interesting relationship to humans. He refuses to join Book 5’s VDC because “he had no desire to be put on display for humans” and won't make a Magicam account as he has “no desire to place myself at the whims of humans’ idle curiosity”. He doesn’t seem to like people staring at him in general and has difficulty identifying with students (“We played ball. The whole class seemed to love it. I could take it or leave it, personally”).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the player Malleus says, "Come to me if you need help with any part of an assignment...I wasn't expecting anything from you to start with", and "The way I see it, a human's life is too short to accomplish anything. But is that truly the case?"
He does, however, commend humans for striving “so hard to master such basic tasks” such as running and flying. In a voice line he says he is “no good at divining the human mind”.
In two different events and a PE vignette Cater tries to get a picture of Malleus for his Magicam account. Malleus responds by 1) giving permission but then moving too much, too fast for a proper picture, 2) disappearing and 3) refusing outright.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have not seen Idia and Malleus interact that much in the game, and mostly across two ceremonial robes vignettes. Idia refers to him as “an ultra SSR character”.
Due to a misunderstanding Malleus refers to Idia dressing in his ceremonial robes as “weird”, saying that he simply “cannot understand the meaningless things humans do at times. Though I suppose that’s what makes them so interesting”. Idia panics and runs away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his birthday vignette Malleus says that, before the interview, he had never worn so much white in front of other people before. He explains that black is the color of nobility for his family, and he has worn a lot of black from when he was a child.
When Kalim argues that “cheery colors give off much more of a party vibe”, Malleus references “the legendary Thorn Fairy herself” who “is said to have worn a black dress on the occasion of the princess’ birthday”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus buys a very bright shirt as a souvenir for Lilia in the Firelit Sky event and receives one of his own for free, saying he may wear it some other time, as it would perhaps “make me feel like I was on vacation”.
Malleus’ favorite food is frozen desserts, which he says he especially enjoys eating after breathing fire, which can make the inside of his mouth uncomfortably warm.

Malleus Info Compilation part 13: Halloween
Malleus has a difficult time during Halloween when, in trying to encourage campus visitors to be respectful of school’s rules, he learns of “the Draconia Challenge”, where people photograph themselves touching him for Magicam. The experience upsets Malleus extremely—Silver describes him as “furious”—and we learn from Sebek that someone had also been grabbing onto his horns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cater diffuses the situation via Magicam, and Malleus concedes that he “almost caused an interspecies conflict over a mere school event…I need to get better control over my emotions”. He also insists on taking responsibility for bringing trouble to Ramshackle Dorm.
The Magicam Monster incident bothers Malleus so much he refuses to attend a meeting of Halloween committee members, with Lilia explaining that "He asked to have some time alone to cool his head". Kalim reflects, "It's Halloween, and he's spending it alone. That must be so sad for him."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus gets his revenge towards the end of the “Terror is Trending” event, and thanks the members of his dorm that made it possible. This Halloween was Malleus’ first time selecting the costumes for Diasomnia Dorm, which is a task that usually falls to Lilia.
Lilia asked him to take it on “if the heir to Briar Valley’s royal throne himself were to select the theme, it would pique the students’ interest”. Malleus accepts the task and, with Ortho’s help, designs costumes to represent “the ghost of a long”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Spectral Soiree, Malleus takes pity on a group of ghosts who had traveled to attend NRC’s Halloween party but did not arrive until after the festivities had ended.
Deciding to throw a new Halloween party, Malleus says, “The school has long maintained a durable barrier around its premises. Combine that with enough power from ghosts, and it would be possible. And if that’s still not enough, I’ll lend you my power”.
Malleus then stops time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The students are unaware that Malleus is behind the problem and assume that both he and Lilia were kidnapped along with the rest of the student body.
At one point Cater remembers Malleus saying, “How could I of all people struggle so?”, which they all interpret to mean that “THE Malleus Draconia was fighting a losing battle”. It is later revealed that he was actually struggling with a piece of music for the pipe organ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spectral Soiree involves Malleus announcing that he will “turn every one of (the students) into ghosts” and “perform the finest of requiems over your cold, fallen bodies”, but Silver realizes that Lilia has not actually been possessed and that it was all an act.
Malleus is surprised when the students react with bafflement, having assumed that they were all aware that it was a prelude to a party, and apologizes for causing them grief.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We do not see Malleus suffer any particular consequences for kidnapping 600 students and stopping time, but Ace does tell him that the entire situation was “not cool”. Malleus explains, “It was to keep you entertained until the party was ready. Wasn’t it fun?”
Ace begs him to “PLEASE try to show some awareness of how overwhelmingly powerful you are”. Malleus agrees to take Ace’s words “into consideration” for “next time”, to which Ace responds, “There’s gonna be a NEXT TIME? Shouldn’t you learn something from this?!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilia expresses surprise that Ace has complained to Malleus directly, and Malleus agrees, as “most students at school keep their distance. And rather a few of them flee at the sight of me. But not you. You spoke your mind openly and honestly, and without the aid of others”.

Malleus Info Compilation part 11: Malleus, Magic, Time and being a prince
While we do not know what Malleus’ unique magic is, we have seen him use one particular spell more than once:
In Books 5, 6 and during Spectral Soiree Malleus has a “Return to your proper place! Revert to your proper shape!” spell that he uses, first to repair the damage done by Vil’s overblot, to return Vil himself to his proper age and to repair the shattered mirror ball and return the Sparkling Hall to its “true form”.
("Not even I can turn back time. But sharing a bit of magic is certainly within my power.")
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus explains in his birthday vignette that, unlike humans, fairies do not change in appearance over the span of a mere few years.
He says he finds it odd that humans celebrate birthdays when they only live for 100 years or so, with each birthday bringing them closer to death, and cannot understand the appeal. But, "perhaps it's because of their limited lifespan that humans seek out pleasure so greedily."
Tumblr media
We learn in Firelit Sky that Jamil once set an awning on fire while trying to aim for a bug. In his defense Jamil says “I was a kid”, to which Malleus responds, “You still are, by my reckoning”.
Malleus has a voice line where he says “How old will you be this year? …ha ha ha, really? You’re practically a baby from my perspective”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He says “Sometimes I lose track of time when I’m with you. It’s quite a novel phenomenon for me", but also “I recognize the design on this plate. It came into popularity recently…what’s that? It’s an antique? My, how time flies…” so he may lose track of time fairly often.
Tumblr media
The crown prince of Briar Valley, Malleus has a voice line of “Here at school, I’m not the future king of they who follow darkness: I’m merely a student, just like you”.
Malleus says that he does not leave home very often, and that he can’t broaden his horizons as much as he wishes as “having to deal with the senate does not make leisure travel easy”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Culinary Crucible event that Malleus chuckles at the suggestion of a chef ghost that he make breakfast for himself (he says that food would just appear before him back in Briar Valley, and the ghost responds with the thought, “then why are you taking this course!?”) and he says in Firelit Sky that the opportunity to try street food is “quite a rare experience for me”.
Despite such experiences, however, he has a voice line that says, “I was hoping the outside world would have more to amuse me…”

Malleus Info Compilation part 12: Malleus, Deuce and Riddle
Malleus and Deuce have the occasional overlap: In a Halloween voice over Deuce describes Malleus as “even more gallant than usual" in his costume, and Deuce is Malleus’ judge in Culinary Crucible.
In a vignette Cater sends Malleus to Deuce to fix a technological issue that Malleus has and Deuce, initially, prepares to brawl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Note: when Malleus summons fire to help dry out the damp inner workings of the device, the color of the flames are orange on NA but they were originally blue on JP. Visual changes are usually corrections of mistakes made on JP due to oversight or time constrictions. It is my theory that the blue fire is supposed to be unique to Grim, Idia and Ortho because it is not normal fire, making it a continuity error that Malleus had been able to summon whatever it is with plain fire magic. Hence the correction for NA.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce successfully fixes Malleus’ device and Malleus explains how fully mechanical objects are rare in Briar Valley, as “most of what we use is technomancy”, and how he barely remembers any of his childhood. Malleus gifts deuce with a rare ore for his help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus’ treasure is revealed to be a tamagotchi-style digital toy called “Roaring Drago” that Lilia got for him as a souvenir “during one of his sojourns to another land”, and his wish in the “Wish Upon a Star” event is “for Roaring Drago to make a friend”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idia grants this wish by ordering another one online. Roaring Drago is name-dropped in the Firelit Sky event as well. (Twisted Wonderland equivalents of Roaring Drago were released in January of 2021)

Malleus is also Deuce's interviewer for his third birthday vignette.
Like Malleus and Deuce, Malleus and Riddle also have the occasional overlap. While Deuce is Malleus' Culinary Crucible judge, Malleus is Riddle’s judge.
On the subject of Riddle's cooking Malleus says “the flavor and plating are both entirely pedestrian. Perhaps I expected too much.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus visits Riddle during Phantom Bride to thank him for fighting to save Lilia and Sebek in a conversation where we learn about “a classic Thorn Fairy anecdote” to do with frost and roses.
(this is covered in slightly more detail in novel, where Deuce shares a rumor that Malleus went to Heartslabyul on an errand and after he left, all the roses in the rose maze were found to be frosted over and wilted. It is also mentioned in FanBook 2, which says, "This is a reference to the part in Sleeping Beauty where the fairy Flora recommends disguising Aurora as a flower to hide her from Maleficent, but Merryweather cautions that Maleficient may send out a frost to kill all flowers in the land if they were to do so."
Tumblr media
When Malleus says he suspects that Riddle must consider his conduct to be unbeffiting a leader Riddle responds, “Your position as prince of your land must come before your position as housewarden”.
Malleus concedes that as Briar Vallery’s heir apparent he “cannot enter into an engagement lightly, even on false pretense” (even to save Lilia and Sebek), but says Riddle lacks “a certain…majesty”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus fastens one of the roses that Riddle had pruned onto Riddle’s lapel, saying, “If you are king of this rose garden, you must carry yourself with a rose’s strength and nobility”.
When Silver expresses concern for Lilia and Sebek, Malleus says he has full confidence in Riddle. Silver is surprised at how much faith Malleus has in Riddle’s abilities and Malleus says, “Faith? I am merely acknowledging the truth. After all, he is…the king of Heartslabyul.”

Malleus Info Compilation part 5: Malleus and Lilia (1/2)
Lilia calls himself as Malleus’ guardian and may have been present at his hatching. ("Saying I've known him since he was a child doesn't quite encapsulate the duration of our acquaintance.")
When Rook comments that “It must be hard to tend to a dragon of such wild and noble temperament” Lilia says, “When he was an infant, he would sometimes emit puffs of flam when he fussed. He even singed my bangs once. Khee hee…that takes me back...I was most impressed that he managed to harm me, even if it was only my hair”, so he may have been at his side for Malleus' entire life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilia will share stories from Malleus’ childhood. He says, “I still remember the days when Malleus wept because he couldn’t dress himself”. After he tells a story about trick-or-treating, Malleus says “I did not know you did that”, and Lilia offers to create the experience.
Malleus responds with “I’m not a child anymore”, to which Lilia says, “There’s no age limit on having fun”. Sebek offers to assist and Malleus turns him down as well, leading Lilia to comment, “Your insistence on being seen as a grown-up seems pretty childish to me, Malleus”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus being displeased at Lilia’s treating him like a child is something of a theme, such as when Lilia offers to fix his hat during Halloween. Malleus says that Lilia would tell him about Halloween traditions in other countries in lieu of bedtime stories, “way back when”.
Also during Halloween we learn of a promise that Malleus made to Lilia when he was young, that he would always call on Lilia, Silver and Sebek when he was distraught as, “We may not be related by blood, but we ARE family”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We learn that there was a Halloween ten years prior where Lilia says he “simply got in touch with my inner child and let loose a little”, but Malleus says “just remembering it sends a shiver down my spine…he wriggled like some sort of venomous snake, and his laugh rung hollow...I felt I might be cursed just listening to it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Cater tries to empathize with “When Lilia starts getting screamy in Pop Music Club practice, it can get a little scary”, Malleus, Silver and Sebek insist, “The True Lilia is far worse than that!!!”.
During a discussion with Silver about about the fairies who raised a child for 16 years without magic, Malleus says that Lilia once told him, "Raising children is a nightmare even WITH magic." Silver reacts with, "O-oh...He really said that?!"

Malleus Info Compilation part 3: Malleus Alone
Malleus’ opinion on being alone seems to vary. When he first meets the player he says that he “quite enjoyed having a place where I could go to enjoy the peace of solitude”, and that it is a “pity” that the player has taken residence in Ramshackle, meaning it is no longer abandoned. (In Halloween, however, he again refers to Ramshackle as “abandoned”, with Deuce responding that he feels bad for the player).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the player explains that they may lose Ramshackle to Azul in Book 3, he says “I suppose this place will belong to him and become a hotspot for noisy students”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a birthday voice line we learn that as his birthday is a national holiday in Briar Valley he is busy from morning until night with no time to himself. Silver refuses to leave his side in Phantom Bride, despite Malleus’ assurance that “I don’t mind being on my own”.
He also has a voice line telling the player that they “always seem to attract a crowd…more so than I’d like, really”. He also refuses Cater’s offer to partner in a PE vignette, saying “I am perfectly fine being alone”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the other hand, during his second birthday we learn that he would often eat his meals alone in Briar Valley (the reason his disliked food is “whole cakes” is because he wouldn’t have anyone to share cake with at celebrations and would thus eat the entire cake himself) but after sharing lunch with Lilia, Silver and Sebek at school, he thinks that eating alone may have lost its appeal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also has a voice line where he says “I’m not particularly unhappy when I’m alone. It’s just…I happen to rather enjoy having companionship like this.”
We learn from Azul that “becoming directly acquainted with Malleus is next to impossible” because “Diasomnia is an extremely insular dorm”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This seems to include the necessity of an appointment in order to interact with Malleus at all, as mentioned both in Malleus and Sebek’s ceremonial robes vignettes when it is referenced that Leona and Crowley do not have appointments to see him.

Malleus Info Compilation part 10: Vil and the Main Story
In the main story we meet Malleus for the first time in Book 2 where he chooses not share his name, saying that “It is for your own benefit, I assure you. Instead, I will permit you to call me by a name of your choosing. Although you may one day regret it…”
Malleus appears again in Book 3 and learns that the player has dubbed him “Hornton". He refers to the player as “fearless”.
At the end of Book 3 he expresses surprise that the player was able to win their bet against Azul, calling the player both “doe-eyed” and “quite the schemer” and disappearing until Book 5, when he reveals that he had earlier sent Lilia with a greeting card in Book 4.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus appears before other students and Grim for the first time at the end of Book 5, and Vil expresses a fearlessness that is similar to Leona’s approach to Malleus.
Malleus says “I’m most impressed. A magical reaction on the level of an overblot…and not a single one of the many mages on campus, myself included, took notice of it.” Rather cryptically he says, “I suppose it’s immaterial, at the end of the day.”
While he says he is bestowing “a gift” upon the “children of man” (both Malleus and Lilia refer to humans as “children of men”, but just as often simply say “humans”), Malleus says “You owe me, Schoenheit”, implying that his help is less so a gift and more so a favor for Vil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus announces “With the stage restored, I can watch you perform now. That’s the extent of my interest in this matter”, telling Vil that “I’ve set the stage for you, Schoenheit. I trust you will keep me suitably entertained”.
Malleus describes the group’s performance as “somewhat entertaining” and “worth fixing up the stage to see it”, with Lilia commenting that he seems “even more engaged than you were at my live show”.
This "gift" is referenced later in Book 6, when Vil returns from the Island of Woe having aged into an old man. Malleus observes, "When I fixed the VDC stage, I told Schoenheit that he owed me...but his deeds on this occasion have returned the favor and left me in his debt instead."
He then rewards Vil with his youth returned, saying, "Not even I can turn back time. But sharing a bit of magic is certainly within my power."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the conclusion of events of Book 5 the audience is encouraged to use QR codes to submit their votes and decide the winner of the competition, and we see a montage of different characters with a chime sound to signify that they have voted successfully.
When Cater is alone on screen there is one chime, two chimes for Trey and Riddle and three chimes for Azul, Jade and Floyd. When Maellus and Lilia are on screen, only one chime sounds, insinuating that the technologically-challenged Malleus may have struggled with the QR code.
The NRC team loses the competition by a single vote.
Malleus does not appear in Book 2 but is heavily referenced, as Savanaclaw beating Diasomnia (and Malleus, specifically) in a Spelldrive tournament is the driving force behind Book 2’s conflict.
We learn from Crowley that ever since Malleus enrolled NRC, “no dorm has scored even a single point against Diasomnia. Diasomnia regularly scores 100 points per game, with 90% of them being from Mr. Draconia himself. Recent matches have been ending without anyone, save Mr. Draconia, casting even a single spell. And that includes his own teammates!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus agrees to be inducted into the hall of fame, which would retire him from the sport and give other athletes opportunities, but Leona and Vil argue against it, with Vil saying to Crowley that “It reeks of some kind of unconscious bias on your part”.
(We also see Leona and Vil put aside their differences in collaboration against Malleus in Phantom Bride, vowing to prove themselves to be more desirable.)

Malleus Info Compilation part 8: Malleus, Invitations and Rook
Malleus is consistently not being invited to things like ceremonies and Housewarden meetings, to the point that Idia asks if he isn’t avoiding them on purpose.
Lilia assures him that “Time just flows a little…differently for us fae”, and that “he’s got quite a streak of bad luck when it comes to these things”. Interestingly, it is often (though not always) Vil who notices when Malleus is not present.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus insists it does not bother him (in a voice line he says “I never get invited to ceremonies. And…just to be clear, I’m not pouting about it”, and in a chat he says “Not like I care anyway” about not being invited to a housewarden meeting).
But Lilia says in he gets “a bit peeved” when he isn’t invited to any festivities. When the player gives Malleus one of their VDC tickets in Book 5 his response is “You truly have no fear at all”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kalim says in Firelit Sky that he will invite Malleus to one of his parties sometime, to which Malleus responds, "Then I shall await the arrival of your invitation...if you have it in you to do so."
There is only one documented instance of Malleus being invited to a party that he refused to attend: Rook’s birthday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two PE vignettes devoted to Rook and Malleus interactions: in Malleus’ PE vignette Rook approaches Malleus to ask if dragons resemble impala, antelope, lizard or crocodiles, much to Malleus’ annoyance.
Rook says outright, “I have never hunted a dragon...So fae are more akin to monsters than animals”. Malleus realizes Rook is intentionally trying to infuriate him, and Rook admits, “Throwing your prey off-balance and luring them into your territory is a basic hunting technique”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus has a voice line where he says he received clothing from Rook for his birthday that “fits perfectly”, but he cannot figure out how it is that Rook about able to confirm his size.
In Rook’s own PE vignette he instead approaches Lilia, using Malleus as the subject of conversation. When Lilia asks if he is seriously considering hunting Malleus Rook responds, “right now, it is you who has captured my heart”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malleus responds by throwing a shotput so near to Rook’s face that he nearly slices off Rook’s nose. Rook comments that Malleus may be overprotective and recommends that Lilia “strengthen his grip” on Malleus. Lilia responds, “I could not be more proud. My lessons have paid off”.
