Kagurabachi Chapter 3: Witness
Tumblr media
A good few of my followers/mutual said they were interested in me doing metas on more series outside of jujutsu kaisen. So here it goes!
This meta is going to be about… You guessed it… Kagurabachi lol! This is a new manga in weekly shōnen jump that has gotten some (weird) attention from the animanga fanbase. So bare with me as I dissect this chapter and follow me for more (if you don't already)
P.S—If there is a series you want me to write about, let me know in my asks or comments below!
Meet Hinao
Tumblr media
This chapter is a pretty straightforward one, and that's pretty much been the theme of this manga so far. It starts off with an interesting infomercial like moment where we are introduced to the character Hinao. Hinao is an informant on the Yakuza and Sorcerers, while also being a “handler” of sorts. She has access to both sorcerers and yakuza, acting has the connector between the two. I like the addition of a character like her, but I do hope there is more distinction given about her safety being the one who connects two unpredictable parties.
We also get a loose number of how many sorcerers are around, and in Tokyo alone there are over 1000. That leaves a lot of room for different character types, motivations, and powers. I hope that we don't get a stereotypical sorcerer of the week situation every fight. There is a lot of potential to expand on the world building, or more specifically the city building of Tokyo, Japan. Later down the line, I could see the series expand farther, but I think baby steps are best for now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a flashback showing how Hinao and Mr. Shiba started working together to find information on Rokuhira (the MCs dad). Nothing special really straight forward as well, but I like that Hinao mentions she had no idea Shiba was connected to Rokuhira. That information is nice because it confirms how secretive Shiba is, making me more interested in his overall persona.
The Little Girl Char
Ok, first, her name being Char is so cool. I'm a gundam stan, so I feel like this is a homage to the red comet, but I also could be in my own head canon. Either way, WE LOVE CHAR!
Tumblr media
Any who, the chapter isn't complicated from here, but I have some moments I really enjoyed.
For example, the conversation between Chihiro and Char felt like a big brother/little sister connection. Chihiro wanted to take her out to get food just because she hadn't eaten, but he didn't believe she actually saw and enchanted blade. You can't blame him, Char is a smart girl and seemed to be acting as if she had no information to give. I think this is her way of protecting herself from everyone. She went into Hinao's place because it was somewhere to hire bodyguards, but she can't just trust every person who asks her about the enchanted sword.
After a short time, Char mentions the sword forming a cloud, which indicates to Chihiro that she isn't lying. My favorite part about this scene, is that if you are paying attention, you see a sorcerer walk into the restaurant while they are talking. He sits right behind Chihiro, and listens in to their conversation. This is when I see Chihiro has a lot of learning to do when it comes to his surroundings. He saw the sorcerer being antagonized by the shop owner but missed that he was a threat to them. This guy perfectly catches our MC off guard, explodes a doll to cause disarray, and grabs Char.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fortunately, the sorcerer intended on killing Chihiro with that blast but failed. This is where the chapter ends, with him expressing his disappointment in Chihiro's survival, while Chihiro apologizes to Char for not believing her. I find Char's response so cute, but I also am very intrigued with who Char is.
Why is she being chased? How does she know the bad guys? Why did the sorcerer not just kill her but capture her? I think this is a good plot point that could truly elevate the series, even though it's only 3 chapters in.
Tumblr media
Potential…
I see a lot of potential for Kagurabachi. The paneling is nice, the character interactions are good, but I need more substance out of the world building. I hope the mangaka doesn't take too long in establishing some sort of concrete enemy, even if there is a plot twist that changes things later on.
I also want more characterization, but I'm still determining if this is a narrative based story or a character based one. Furthermore, I hope that this starts to become clearer down the line and not too late!

New Allies and Enemies Emerge in Kagurabachi Chapter 3
We are introduced to the character Hinao, she explains the Japanese system of katanas. It’s legal to possess them for “self-defense.” but they’re not enough. Apparently, this is where sorcerers like the Hishaku come in. They provide additional protection mainly for criminal leaders like the Yakuza. Three years prior, Shiba entered her shop to inform her of Kunishige’s death. Suddenly, a little…

why are people giving kagurabachi the morbius treatment. I thought the reason people pulled a morbius on morbius was because people didn't wanna see jared leto cast in stuff anymore. what is the point of doing this to kagurabachi

Kagurabachi's Popularity: Familiarity Through Structure
Having a degree in writing and media is so fun because I can write an essay on why Kagurabachi can be defined as well written through craft standards and attribute its popularity overseas to its structure, which is framed similarly to western movies.
And I am!
After this interview confirmed that Takeru Hokazono, author of Kagurabachi, is a huge fan of western films, I went back to this idea I was playing with in October when KB had less than ten chapters. I had been reading since day one, and I knew it was good, and other overseas fan knew it was good. But what made it so good to us, overseas?
I made a quick thread on it on my Twitter account (that I never posted) where I mentioned Blake Snyder's Save the Cat book on script writing and story structure. I also brought up characterization and how it would've been really popular in my comic book class from undergrad. This thread discussed both Chihiro and Sojo, and the quick yet steady pace of the manga has given us more characters and moments to pinpoint. To not overwhelm myself, I'm not going to discuss the craft of characterization (maybe another time), and I'm not going to do a beat sheet for Sojo. For now, I'll try to stay under the first arc to map out why Kagurabachi has so far moved like a high budget film in manga form. So, spoilers ahead!
A quick lesson on Save the Cat, its three main characteristics are: Three act structure Fifteen plot beats Mostly applied to American Hollywood films
One of the biggest things I noticed right away was the resemblance a lot of the chapters, even the story as a whole, had to Snyder's beat sheet. This beat sheet that comes from Snyder's book is somewhat of an industry standard, so a lot of movies, even those that preceded Snyder, go through this structure of Act 1, 2, and 3. Snyder just identified the parts and broke them down to fifteen beats. Plus he dubbed the save the cat moment:
A decisive moment in which a protagonist demonstrates they are worth rooting for. Having the protagonist save a cat can be literal or figurative.
This was something KB needed and did have to have us warm up to Chihiro who post time skip, just gave gloomy orphan energy in the previous chapters. Here, Char would be our cat. Chihiro chose to save Char and chose to protect her, and continued to fight for her until she was rescued. He made this choice even before it's revealed that Char's mother died for her, something that would parallel Chihiro. This is what got readers to see him three dimensionally after being introduced to him. He's still the caring little 14 year old we saw at the start, who continues to take care of the innocent despite the tragedy he's been through. It is only natural for us to care for him, too.
Tumblr media
Above are the fifteen beats of Save the Cat and although KB on occasion doesn't hit all fifteen exactly as specified, especially final image as it's continuing, the song and dance is quite similar. Here are examples of The Dark Knight (2008) and Inglourious Basterds (2009), two movies that have inspired Hokazono's work.
Before Chihiro meets Char, we get his opening image of him and his dad forging which is works well as the entire story revolves on the consequences of them creating weapons. We get the set up to his world where he lives with his dad who made famous katanas that wield the power to end a war. The theme is stated, and it's not kept a secret: The katanas they make are weapons made to kill people. Are they willing to carry the burden? In another variation of this question, is Chihiro willing to carry the burdens unintentionally passed down by his father?
The catalyst is his father's murder that catapults him into seeking revenge and recover the katanas.
Now, for the rest of the story, this structure can be applied to the first 18 chapters or even 1-3 chapters at a time which in my opinion, is kind of insane. There's story telling inside the story telling, and these moments are both subtle and grand, signs of a strong and captivating writer. Hollywood would kill for a script like this these days. In order to get you to believe me how prominent these beats are, I'm going to do arc one and Daruma's story. The main story line should be around act one and two right now as of chapter 20, if we want to get down into it, but if anything, this feels like it's moving like a second "movie."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, this structure that comes from Hollywood movies can be identified in multiples parts of Kagurbachi's storytelling. I was going to do beat sheet's for Char and Sojo's stories as well, but I think this is enough of an example of a bigger picture versus smaller. Although other mangas also fall into three act structures, as most story telling does, KB masterfully uses the 15 beats to its advantage. I believe the familiarity of this pace is what hooked oversea audiences, and aside from that, the characters that quickly capture us.
Very quickly, because I don't want to make this about characterization, Chihiro is well written through his past, who he chooses to kill and save, his dialogue that can be surprisingly vulnerable at times, and his cool façade that melts because of how hot he truly runs. He is also straight up a badass. We get handed Char's background in an "all is lost" segment as well as some lore that can present her as a resource for the main cast. We see Azami's phone background photo that's minimum 3+ years old- a government employee with a soft spot for his friends, one who he is still clearly grieving. We get one tiny yet so fucked up bit of Sojo when we see him get a flashback where he's a child and his single dialogue of "I truly love Kunishige Rokuhira," that launched his type of villainy in the maniacal fanboy category. Who does it like that? Nobody but Takeru Hokazono.
Thank you for reading this essay! I do have two other essays drafted, one on Sojo's possible return (I'm a delusional Sojo fan) and just his overall significance and impact as the first villain even if he doesn't return, and on Hiyuki plus servant leadership versus self service.

Kagurabachi Chapter 3
Tumblr media
first panel and I'm already obsessed with her. I love her vibe, I love her character design (I love her hair). She definitely falls into some 'girl in a shonen' trope but I love a cool girl, so I'm rolling with it.
This manga is reminding me so much of JJK right now and I'm not sure why. I think it has something to do with the art style--the high contrast deep blacks, the smaller panels with thick almost scribbly lines--and probably the tone too. Dunno.
Tumblr media
I love how many sides of Chihiro we're seeing right away. He's so soft and considerate here in contrast to his cold, emotionless demeanor before, and in contrast to his dangerous looks and how ruthless we've seen him be before.
It's very easy to make the connection in these panels that he's compassionate towards Char because he's relating to what she's going through. It doesn't have to be said explicitly, the structure of the storytelling leads you to that conclusion pretty easily. I like that kind of subtle storytelling.
Tumblr media
After one chapter with her, I absolutely adore Char. I think it's because she talks so much like a real kid. Just saying random things as they pop into her head, irrespective of proper conversational structure. She's cagey the way a young kid is about things they're scared to talk about. She's transparent but inscrutable. She's like, the most authentic child I've seen in fiction in a long time.
I love her little "I thought this soba was to seal the deal!" Like she just made an assumption to fill in the gaps of the adult world around her that she can't fully understand, but didn't bother to tell anyone she came to that conclusion. That and, "If someone were to ask me if it was yummy, I would say...'yes!'" on the page before. She's just talking out loud to herself just like grade school age kids do. It's so charming!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite thing, is that Kagurabachi is just so much fun to look at. The panelling is so dynamic (that also probably reminds me of JJK), and it pulls your eye so effortlessly across the page. It creates movement and pace with your eye so the art doesn't feel static. And the art is so beautiful. There are so many two-page and one-and-a-half page spreads. It really makes me want to read it in print instead of on my phone to get the full experience. It's so much fun to read. I could stare at these two pages for hours.
And bonus: The mangaka knows how to draw black people! Very exciting.

I started reading kagurabachi a couple of weeks ago and now I'm fully caught up with it and my general opinion so far is that it's actually pretty good!
the plot is perhaps a bit formulaic but still quite interesting (maybe I'm biased bc I love revenge stories) and it moves fairly quickly without leaving too much info behind, plus the action is so dynamic but easy to follow, and there are some legit super cool panels
SPOILER REVIEW BELOW
just a few of my favorite panels
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(as you might be able to tell I love seeing the fishes teehee)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quick summary of the plot: the MC is a young guy named Chihiro Rokuhira who's out for revenge after his father Kunishige, one of Japan's most famous swordsmiths, was killed 3 years before, and those same people, a group of evil sorcerers known as the ?, stole all 6 of his father's enchanted swords, but chihiro has a 7th special sword that his father kept secret from everyone but him.
Edit: this might be important for some people so I'll add that Chihiro is 18, since we saw him with his dad as a 14 going on 15 year old and the story fast forwards to more than 3 years later in the first chapter, which would make him 18
He's joined by his father's best friend, a sorcerer named Shiba who becomes his mentor and informant about the shady business going on in Tokyo, Azami who's another sorcerer and friend of his father's and Shiba, a little girl named Char who comes from a family that has the ability to regenerate their body parts and is being hunted for it, a young woman named Hinao who's a weapons dealer, and later on another young man named Hakuri who comes from a different sorcerer family but defected bc he's the only one who doesn't know sorcery (and was abused).
Personality wise, Chihiro is the more level-headed, serious, and reserved type but shows great care and sympathy for those who need help, for ex. when he helps out char from being hunted and experimented on, and when he traded his beloved sword for Hakuri. His father had a huge impact on his philosophy about life and weapons.
He does want revenge for his father's death, but his greatest motivation however is to prevent anyone from tarnishing his father's legacy which are his enchanted swords, bc kunishige made sure to let Chihiro know that his swords are weapons first and foremost, and when put in the wrong hands are destructive and lethal.
The power system is fairly simple, based in sorcery, which for Chihiro is channeled through his enchanted sword called Enten from which 3 different goldfish, each having their own ability, appear (and the goldfish are the same ones his father had before he died: a black goldfish, a red one, and a spotted one).
The enchanted swords that Kunishige made come from a rock (?) called datenseki, which we don't know much about yet.
And about the first antagonist we meet, Sojo. He's a weapons dealer in the black market and does other criminal activities. He also has one of the 6 enchanted swords that was stolen, this one called Cloud Gouger. To me, this fight is reminiscent to Yuji vs Mahito in the Shibuya arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, in the sense that Chihiro has to accept that despite what he personally believes about his father and his swords, Sojo also can have his own contradictory beliefs bc it's the person who wields the sword that gets to determine it's fate. Chapter 12: Tea I believe is pivotal in Chihiro's development and is one of the best chapters so far. I like the metaphor with Sojo offering Chihiro dango, which he refuses at the beginning (he says he doesn't like sweets) and by the end eats it, even if doesn't like it, because it reflects his acceptance with Sojo's philosophy about the blades.
The only thing I think might not to be everyone's taste is the art style, but if course art is subjective, although it does suffer a bit from same face syndrome at times.
But I think the art is unique with its use of shading and perspective, and there are some really cool character designs, plus something that stands out to me is that the fight choreography is made to be a spectacle.
As a long time shipper, I feel like I should address the shipping dynamics that I've seen, which there aren't too many yet, but I still wanna talk about. So the main ship I've seen is between Chihiro and Hakuri, which these panels I think are fueling the fire for it and I can totally see it and wanna see more from their budding friendship. What's the ship name btw? hakuhiro?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides that, I've also seen Shiba/Kunishige, and Sojo/Kunishige but that's definitely a one sided admiration on Sojo's part.
One criticism I've found is that there's a character named Daruma who is after Chihiro and Char and is originally depicted in a way, which to me, looks to be black characteristics, like the hair and facial features, but after Shiba convinced him to leave his life of crime behind, his look changes. For example, his hair becomes straight, so what's up with that? Now to be fair, since the manga is in grayscale, we don't know what his skin color is but he has no shading to skin which in my experience of reading manga means that a character is light skin.
Tumblr media
Other than that, there's nothing else I can find fault in, so give it a read (there's 25 chapters so far!)

Kagurabachi is genuinely so fucking gas its so refreshing to have a story that kicks off out the gate I was wary on the first chapter but Sojo is such a good villain this dude is genuinely fucking insane. Spoilers upto chapter 12 which is where the manga is currently at where im writing this but like thats not that deep so nothing too huge spoiler wise. .
Tumblr media
So I'm gonna just start talkin about some of the stuff I like 1. Chihiro is strong but he isn't some fucking Kirito-tier protag whos' just the best no matter what. The second he faces someone on par with him he gets his fucking ass handed to him. 2. The characters are all able to stand on their own personalities and designs. Due to this they're almost all memorable. The main issue is that they don't all get names during their introductions (come on what is pikmin mask's name)
Tumblr media
3. The art is really good also I think Sojo will really catch on once Kagurabachi has time to shine

Kagurabachi Chapter 3: The Witness
Tumblr media
I thought about skipping out on posting about Kagurabachi with this chapter simply because there's not anything noteworthy, but I've ended up having some stuff to say.
Yes, Kagurabachi is not good. It's painfully average in effectively everything aside from environment art that you can't often see. I don't think it will last in WSJ, personally.
But I don't think it's terrible either. This chapter shows at least a hint of potential as we gear up for a fight that seems more unique than what we've been shown so far.
It's just that the author seems afraid. Afraid that if they drop the slightest details from the chapter that it won't be good or that people won't understand. Afraid that trying something different won't go over well so we're exposed to archetypal characters. Of course, this doesn't meant that the author also can't be a greenhorn that struggles with the general medium of manga, but that they're both important things to be aware of.
In general, I'd say in a case like this that the editor in charge of Kagurabachi has a lot of responsibility for some of the decisions here. They should be telling the mangaka to keep things lighter on the detail and to explore the unique concept they've come up with in more creative fashion. They can't fix art, but they can provide a guiding hand for how to improve, which I feel doesn't really exist (and if it does, it's not that good).
Anyways, I'll probably keep up with it for a bit longer, but patience runs thin as it clings to the status quo to keep itself going.

Silver Talks AniManga (24/09/23)
I was gonna say no anime next week since pokemon is on break but then remember that we're still getting zom 9 (before it goes on break until god knows when) and the frieren 1h:30m premier on friday
blue - finale/completed green - new series/new to me
Tumblr media
Anime
Pokemon Horizons Ep23
nice episode before the cour break, it's good to see riko get some time in the spotlight and help move the plot forward. seems like next time there should be a lot of plot too since they're finally meeting the grandma but show is gonna be on break for the next 2 weeks so we'll see eventually I guess
Tumblr media
Zom 100 Ep8
good episode, it was p funny and we finally got the introduction of bea. the fanservice was good too, and the seeds of the akira and shizuka romance were good too
Tumblr media
Manga
Ayakashi Triangle Ch144 (Finale)
aaaaaaaaaaah it's actually over 😭 it's gonna be sad not having yabuki on sundays for a while again but hopefully he'll come back soon enough but anyway ayakashi was a very fun series, ofc it's not an actual 10, but there's nothing else I could personally rate it as, it's just a good ecchi manga with a little bit of battle manga thrown here and there as yabuki is an expert in making. honestly I liked it even more than I would've if matsuri had stayed a boy cause I'm a slut for yuri, as is known, but it would've still been a 10. not really much more to say really, the art was top notch as you'd expect from yabuki, the story wasn't deep or complicated since it's an ecchi series, mostly just a way to bring up Situations to put our characters in, but it moved at a decent pace, and all the cast was likeable and fun to see, even the villains later turned allies. if I had any complaint it'd be that the final arc felt a bit rushed? I thought after the hotel stuff they'd get together and storm the exorcist hq and have 1v1 fights with all the main characters vs the baddies but that never happened but oh well I'll be impatiently waiting for yabuki's next work 🙏
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two on Ice Ch1
hey that was actually better than I expected since I didn't really have any interest in the theme. tho the art was pretty rough at some points, the characters are pretty decently written at least. we'll see how the next chaps for this and mamayuyu go tho cause I can easily see either of them getting axed in the near future, kagurabachi should be fine for at least a couple serialization rounds with how explosive it's debut was
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dandadan Ch121
I didn't expect the new baddie to show up so fast, let alone even meet our protagonists so that's surprising. I'm gonna assume that he's gonna take over the school with whatever power he's using here and our mcs are gonna be the only ones that notice it and they're gonna have to stop him at school without standing out too much. we'll see how right I am
Tumblr media
Ice-Head Gill Ch13
gill got a powerup that goes along with the series name. I haven't talked about this series in ages cause.. there's no much to say, other than it getting axed on the next serialization round for sure, it's just not that interesting. the art's p decent but the previous chap it was really hard to follow, along with what the hell was going on with all the charas moving around
Tumblr media
MamaYuyu Ch3
if chap 1 felt like a one shot or prologue this felt like the end of the actual first chapter. corleo is off to train and actually become capable of fighting all the creatures coming from other worlds, like I predicted 😏. I'm assuming there's gonna be a timeskip after this OR a training arc of sorts that's gonna introduce some other cast members and allies for the mc before we do get some timeskip. he might be the hero but I don't think he's just gonna be proficient in fighting instantly but we'll see I guess
Tumblr media
Kagurabachi Ch2
nice ch2, went over what happened with the dad that they skipped on ch1 and set up the overarching plot with the mc having to retrieve his dad's 6 special swords and defeat the 3 baddies that killed him. nothing brand new or innovative but a serviceable starting point, it's the strongest out of these 3 new series easily that's for sure
