I really love the duality of man in James and The Giant Peach musical
because on one hand it's just a tiny, cute show that's simple and perfectly appropriate to be staged by children and on the other hand Paul & Pasek decided to write the most unhinged double entendre song for middle schoolers to perform:

Shaiman, Pasek & Paul sang "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?" (THIS IS SO HILARIOUS I CAN'T) and won in the nomination "SONG - ONSCREEN PERFORMANCE - TV SHOW/LIMITED SERIES"
THIS MASTERPIECE GETS WHAT IT DESERVES!!!
Can we just give all the awards to Death Rattle Dazzle songs?

Ok not to drag Pasek and Paul but yes to drag them: They make musicals for people who don’t like musicals and think they are too cool for them and also have very basic themes and no strong plot or story
In a musical the music should help drive the plot forward and flow, not just be the background music for a dance break.
They write with capitalism as the goal first and foremost (If that makes sense) It’s like they write hits to make an album or movie that sells, NOT for it to be an entire cohesive musical.
A lot of times it’s like they are writing their own jukebox musical made up of their own original songs and things just don’t flow well
