Martin Simpson and Thomm Jutz: A Wider Understanding
Tumblr media
Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz's recent collaborative album is specific in scope but infinite in potential repeatability. Both folk singer-songwriters and guitarists are endlessly curious consumers of historical songs from specific regions: for Simpson, largely music from the British Isles, and for the American but German-born Jutz, the American South. (While each has dabbled in studying and recording music from other regions, they've long honed in on England and the States.) Jutz, also a lecturer and essayist, had long been interested in a collection from English folklorist and song collector Cecil Sharp, “English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians," which spans 1916-1918 and was first published in 1932. The 274-song collection is chock full of ballads, hymns, nursery rhymes, and more. Jutz was particularly drawn to the songs of singer Mary Sands and folklorist/singer Jane Gentry. He wanted to do something with these songs, but what?
When longtime British folk music label Topic Records put Jutz in touch with Simpson--an artist he had long admired--they spoke on the phone and came up with an idea: In the spirit of the way in which an Englishman like Sharp ended up collecting songs from Appalachia, what if the two of them picked Sands and Gentry songs and asked various English and American folk artists to sing them over new arrangements? After all, even if the United States and England, throughout the years, have had unique histories, their folklore shares themes of class and archetypal gender struggles. So both Simpson and Jutz picked six songs and asked five artists, from their respective countries, to sing, saving one song each for themselves. The timeline from idea to planning to recording--which took place both in Nashville and England--was mere months. Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry, released last fall on Topic, was born.
Indeed, Nothing But Green Willow is an inspired collection, pairing some of the world's finest folk interpreters, singers, and instrumentalists, with Simpson and Jutz's terrific dual guitar arrangements. Some, like Emily Portman, Angeline Morrison, and Fay Hield, who sing on "Far Annie", "The Suffolk Miracle", and "I Whipped My Horse", respectively, approach folk music in their own careers from the same analytical perspective as Jutz and Simpson, and so they were natural fits. Jutz himself emphasizes the beatific nature of a song like "Awake! Awake!", while country singer Tammy Rogers and actress/singer/model/former neonatal nurse (!) Odessa Settles pry at the innate weariness of "Married and Single Life" and "Pretty Saro". Other tunes are more upbeat, from Simpson's spritely guitar workout on "The Wagoner's Lad" to Tim O'Brien's fiddle jaunt on "Edwin in the Lowlands Low" and Sierra Hull & Justin Moses' deft tempo exercises on "Geordie". My favorite songs are the ones on which Simpson and Jutz's interplay even further plays off of the other featured artists, whether that's Cara Dillon's quintessential Irish twang on on "Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies" or Dale Ann Bradley & Tim Stafford's blaring vocal harmonies on "Jacob's Ladder".
Best of all, and what I gleaned most from listening to Nothing But Green Willow and a phone conversation with Jutz late last summer, is that the record was, truly, a labor of love. "It was nice to sit down and make music without thinking of who we had to please," Jutz said, "or how to craft a narrative around the project." As Jutz is someone who is both an original songwriter and arranger and interested in the technological impact on, and cultural importance of historic recordings, Nothing But Green Willow is an album seemingly perfectly suited for his ethos. And it's also an album whose process can be used to record, rearrange, and re-contextualize songs from any era and place.
Below, read my conversation with Jutz, edited for length and clarity. We talked about his historical relationship with the Sharp collection, his and Simpson's logic in pairing singer with song, and being a folk interpreter in a world of ever-changing technology.
Since I Left You: Around when did you get the idea for Nothing But Green Willow, and when was it recorded?
Thomm Jutz: My original idea to do something with the Sharp collection existed for many years, but I didn't know how to get to it. But when I was introduced to the folks at Topic Records, they introduced me to Martin. Once Martin and I discussed the idea a little bit, it became clear how we wanted to approach it. We had about 2-3 months of warm up time before recording, and that was it. It was recorded [late summer] 2021, half of it in Nashville. Martin was in upstate New York for Richard Thompson's guitar camp, and he flew down to Nashville to record about 7 songs. We flew to England together to record the rest of the album. It came together fairly quickly.
SILY: Do you remember the first time you became familiar with the specific songs on this album?
TJ: With these specific songs, it's a little hard to answer. Some, like, “Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies” and "The Gypsy Laddie", I've known for more than half of my life because of the Carter Family, Bob Dylan, and people like that. About 10-15 years ago, I really got into the Sharp collection and got the books. When Martin and I discussed making the record and focusing only on the songs of Jane Gentry and Mary Sands, I obviously got into [their specific songs] on a much deeper level, hearing the different versions of the songs. It's been a process going on for more than 20 years in one way or another.
SILY: What do all of the featured singers on the album have in common to you? Is there something that ties them together?
TJ: Yes. They all have a deep appreciation for folk music in the true sense of the world, music that comes from the oral tradition. They all come out of that tradition, even the bluegrass [musicians] like Sierra Hull and Dale Ann Bradley. They grew up playing music by ear from people they knew. They didn't study it. Everybody who is on these records love these songs and the true roots of American folk music just as it can be found in English music. It's that love and appreciation that unites these people, but it's also their capacity to interpret them in new ways. There are certainly other ballad singers out there in England and in the United States, but Martin and I didn't want to make this a ballads record where people sang songs a capella. That's been done, and it's great, but we wanted it to approach it a little differently.
SILY: Was it your and Martin's job to pick which singer would sing which song, or did you let the singers pick?
TJ: Once Martin and I looked at all the songs Jane Gentry and Mary Sands had contributed to the Cecil Sharp collection, Martin picked his 6 favorites, and I picked my 6 favorites. I said, "Why don't I [assign] 5 singers here in the States with a song, and you do the same in England." We suggested the songs to the singers, so as to avoid, say, 3 people wanting to sing the same song, or people picking [other] songs from the over 90 songs contributed by these two ladies. We felt pretty strongly about suggesting, "Hey, why don't you do this one!" It's a little risky, but it really worked out.
SILY: What factors did you take into account when making the assignment, from the qualities of each singer's voice to other songs they've sung in the past?
TJ: Not just musical considerations--though that's certainly a part of it--but thematic considerations. In the case of Sierra Hull and Justin Moses, who come out of the bluegrass tradition, I thought it would be interesting to have them sing "Geordie", which had been previously recorded by, among other people, Norman Blake and Tony Rice, which are huge influences in the bluegrass world and had a huge influence on Sierra and Justin. It was interesting to me to see how they would interpret that song that had already been interpreted by two of their heroes. In the case of Tammy Rogers, who is from East Tennessee, she remembers talking to her grandmother, [who would go] to see the Carter Family perform in school houses and court houses. For her, ["Married and Single Life"], which the Carter Family turned into "Single Girl, Married Girl" was interesting to me because of the family connection. Taking the song "Jacob's Ladder", I wanted Dale Ann Bradley to sing that because she's profoundly influenced by the Stanley Brothers, who recorded a version of "Jacob's Ladder" that's very different than the one we have on this album. It's almost like a different song. In the case of Odessa Settles, a wonderful African American gospel singer in Nashville, I thought the lyrics to "Pretty Saro" take on such a profoundly different meaning when sung by an African American person. That was really interesting to experience that.
Martin had his own criteria to pick the British singers, but it's a little harder for me to speak to that.
SILY: Were there any instances where the picked singer was wholly unfamiliar with the original song?
TJ: Oh yes. There were definitely people here in America who weren't familiar with some of the songs or had heard completely different versions. I can't speak to that for the people in England. I think the people in England are from a more serious folk ballad singing tradition, so they were likely a little more familiar with these songs than those on the American side.
Tumblr media
SILY: Why did you decide to release "Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies" as the first taste of the record?
TJ: Cara Dillon's vocal makes such an incredibly beautiful statement. It's traditional, but somewhat contemporary in the way she sings it. She's also a very well-known artist over there, which was part of the consideration. It's also a song that's--I hesitate to use the word "popular"--well-known in the folk tradition in England and still to this day played on the Grand Ole Opry by The Whites in a different version. It's a thematic common ground for the audience. I also thought that the guitar parts Martin and I played on that were part of what makes our collaboration as guitarists interesting. It sets the tone well for what this record is all about.
SILY: Going into the recording, how much did you and Martin work on the arrangements?
TJ: Not at all. Martin doesn't read music, so he had maybe played the melodies to these tunes in their simplest forms without chordal accompaniment. I recorded [some chords] and sent it to him. We both lived with it and didn't do anything before we started playing. The only two songs where we had a little more of an idea [what we were going to do were] "The Wagoner's Lad", because Martin was singing it on the record and had a guitar part worked out, and "The Gypsy Laddie", which I sing on and had a guitar part worked out for it. None of the songs on the record took more than 2 hours to record. It was very much spur of the moment. The singers came in, some not knowing what key they wanted to sing in. Time signatures changed. That's the beauty of it. if you have people you can just sit down with and trust them that it's going to be good, it doesn't require a lot of pre-meditation or pre-production. To me, that's the most exciting way of making and recording music.
SILY: Someone like Fay Hield comes at folk music with both a performance and academic point of view. Does anybody else on here have a similar background?
TJ: I think Emily Portman is somebody who has a very deep understanding of where this music comes from and the different possibilities of interpreting it. Fay teaches music at the University of Sheffield and is an authority. She said a lot of things during the recording session that really opened my eyes and made me think about the music slightly differently. I'm a teacher at Belmont University, so you might call me an academic, though I don't think of myself as such. But I've spent a lot of time with this music and where it comes from.
SILY: How does your unique combination of perspectives affect how you approach these tunes?
TJ: Once you know where you something comes from in terms of place--place not just being a geographical location but in all of its sociopolitical manifestations--you listen to the lyrics differently. You look at the expression of class in the lyrics. Class was such an important factor in England when these songs were originally created, although we can't put an exact date of creation on them. That sense of class was very much prevalent in Appalachia, too, albeit in a different way and political context. The more you know about these places and the people who lived there, you might not understand the music deeper, but you understand it wider and broader.
SILY: Can you tell me about your relationship to the two songs on here that feature your voice?
TJ: "Awake! Awake!" is a song I didn't know before I got into this collection. It wasn't one I had originally selected for this album, and Martin neither, but as I explored, I was captivated by the beauty of the melody. I suggested to Martin when he got to Nashville that we shouldn't leave it out. He was on board, and we came up with an arrangement really quickly. It's a gorgeous lyric. It turns out the title of the album is part of the lyrics to that song. "Gypsy Laddie", or "Gypsy Davy", as a lot of people know it, is a song I've always loved. The opening line of that song--it's a little different in this version--but a lot of the versions I'm familiar with start with, "Gypsy Davy came through the woods, sang so sweet and gaily, made the woods around him ring and captured the heart of a lady." It's one of the most beautiful opening verses of any songs I've ever known. It's obviously not just about a gypsy riding through the woods singing, it's about an archetype, the creator, a sorcerer who can charm not just people but nature with their music. It's such a beautiful representation of making music. That song has always been really geared to me, and it's also a very open-ended song. At the end of the song, we don't know whether the lady is dead, sleeping, happy, or sad. She runs away from her children and husband and with this Gypsy Davy character. That's the beauty of those old songs. They're not so linear. There's a lot of room for interpretation.
SILY: How did the two of you come up with the track sequencing?
TJ: Honestly, I don't think I'm good at sequencing records, but sometimes I have to do it. In this case, it was Martin and me trying to figure out how to not have songs in the same key and tempo back to back. It was more musical than thematic considerations.
SILY: What's the story behind the album art?
TJ: The album art is by the former owner of Topic Records who sold the company but is still very much a part of the Topic family and has become a well-respected painter. He had this painting of this willow tree, so once we came up with the title, the folks at Topic suggested it. I always think it's nice to have original art as part of the musical project.
SILY: Are you planning on playing any of these songs live?
TJ: If the right circumstances come up for me and Martin to play together! It would be very difficult to tour this record because there are so many people involved, but I'd certainly consider playing "Awake! Awake!" and "The Gypsy Laddie" in some of my solo shows.
SILY: In the folk tradition, it shouldn't really matter that you might not be the singer on a specific recording when playing that same arrangement live, but do you think it would do a disservice to the vocalists?
TJ: I don't think so. I think it would add a different character or shade or meaning.
SILY: Ostensibly, you could play all of these songs.
TJ: I guess we could, yes. I don't know if the opportunity is going to come up for us to tour in a way that makes sense, since we're living in different parts of the world, but I'd be interested in pursuing it.
SILY: Do you tend to actively seek out folk songs you're not familiar with or you've never heard before?
TJ: It depends. In the context of American music from the South, yes, because I'm really interested in it. But I'm not a folk song collector or scholar in the sense I'm trying to collect folk songs from, say, a certain part of Mexico. I'm limited in scope.
SILY: On paper, due to technology, this seems like a perfect time for folk music to thrive, because there's so much more at our disposal, so much more quickly. What it is like to be a "scholar" of folk music in this day and age?
TJ: Research, whether listening to music or reading about music, has gotten so much easier because things are so much more accessible. You can look up a word in the dictionary really quickly, but 30 years ago, you had to dig into it, and in the process of finding one word, you find 10 others that are really interesting. Maybe we're missing out on that a little bit. Overall, I feel that we're all very oversaturated musically in the way music is made and consumed. It's not something I'm very interested in. I'm so unplugged from the mainstream that I shouldn't really speak to it. But in terms of accessibility to information about music, I think it's a good thing that so many things are easily available to people. If somebody is interested in the Carter Family, they don't have to go to a store and dig through. At the end of the day, though, if people do that, it might be a good thing.
SILY: It reminds me of what you said about having a wide versus a deep appreciation for music. It's easier these days to have a wider appreciation, but to have a deeper appreciation, you still have to go through the old routes, the exploratory nature of researching one thing and finding relevant tangents.
TJ: Right. Just because you can listen to music widely doesn't mean that you understand it deeply. You still have to do the work as a listener to develop an understanding of the people who made the music and when those songs were recorded. To me, that's endlessly fascinating, so the more information I can get about it, the better.

A federal judge has ruled that Canada's use of emergency powers to end the anti-government Freedom Convoy protests two years ago was "unreasonable" and unjustified.
In a decision on Tuesday, Judge Richard Mosley also said it violated Canada's rights charter.
The Emergencies Act bestows the government with added powers in times of crisis. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked it on 14 February 2022, three weeks into protests that gridlocked the capital.
Dubbed the "Freedom Convoy", the protest against the government's Covid-19 vaccine mandate gained international attention as hundreds of demonstrators settled in for weeks around Ottawa's Parliament Hill, many in trucks.
Shorter protests and blockades also cropped up at various border points across the country.
The emergency powers allowed the government to impose bans on public assembly in some areas and to prohibit travel to protest zones, including by foreign nationals, among other measures.
In Tuesday's decision, Judge Mosely wrote: "I have concluded that the decision to issue the proclamation does not bear the hallmarks of reasonableness - justification, transparency and intelligibility - and was not justified in relation to the relevant factual and legal constraints that were required to be taken into consideration."

Duet - Justin Timberlake X GN Reader
Tumblr media
Title: Duet
Justin Timberlake X GN Reader
Additional Characters: Timothy Mosely, Justin's music team (Mentioned), SZA (Mentioned), Beyonce (Mentioned), and Lady Gaga (Mentioned)
{May or may not be loosely inspired by Justin's new song Selfish ¯\_(ツ)_/¯}
WC: 3,652
Warnings: Shy Reader, Idiots in love, friends to lovers, nicknames, teasing, banter, flirting, slight suggestiveness, mini angst, and fluff
Sitting in your swivel chair, you leaned back against it, listening to the music coming through the speakers. You had always found music to be calming. It never fails to soothe your mind when you are stressed out or tired. Music was your escape from the world around you. You worked at a recording studio, as a soundboard specialist, where you operated professional audio mixing consoles. You were beyond overjoyed when you had been hired by the recording studio. And you were beyond grateful to be able to work with some of the greatest music artists to have ever grace the Earth.
As the music came to a stop, you nodded your head approvingly, smiling to yourself. Leaning forward, you turned on the mic, "Alright, Mr. Timberlake, you're good." You spoke, looking up at the glass window as he took off the headphones and exited the sound booth.
You loved working with Justin and his team. If you had told yourself five years ago that you'd be working with the Justin Timberlake, you probably wouldn't have believed it. But here you were now, doing just that. You couldn't believe how lucky you were. And you weren’t complaining.
"It sounds great," Justin said as you played back the song, "But, um, I feel like it's missing something." He added, looking somewhat puzzled as he stared down at the soundboard, mumbling some of the lyrics as they came out of the speakers while he thought.
Mr. Mosley nodded, "I understand what you mean. It does seem... Unfinished." He spoke, before visibly perking his head up as an idea filled his mind, "Do you think making it a duet would help?"
"A duet?" Justin mimicked, looking up from the soundboard to Timothy Mosley. "Yeah, yeah… That sounds like a great idea actually," He nodded with a slight grin, "But, who should it be with?"
Timothy hummed, frowning slightly in thought, "I don't know," He spoke before looking down at you, "Could you make us a list, Y/N? I would have my secretary do it but she's on maternity leave."
"Oh, yeah, sure." You agreed with a few nods of your head, "I’d be happy to do it." You said, immediately grabbing your notebook from your lap, and clicking your pen, already writing down a few names.
~~~
For the next couple of days, you contacted a plethora of other singers, from SZA, Beyonce, and even Lady Gaga to name a few that you believed voices would match well with Justin's; the first two artists had sung with him before in previous projects such as ‘Trolls: World Tour’ and the song, ‘Until The End Of Time,’ respectively, but sadly, their schedules wouldn’t have allowed them to work on the song with Justin.
Though, that Monday, you were tidying up the studio, collecting piles of papers, pens, - the occasional snack wrappers - and whatnot as you softly sang one of your favorite songs. You often sang while you cleaned during your lunch break after eating, to clear your mind of anything stressful or just to help time fly by as you waited for Justin and the team to head back in. It technically wasn’t a part of your job, but you liked doing it. It was nice putting things away near the end of the day, making the room look nice and tidy.
Getting to your favorite part in the song, you felt yourself being swept away by the familiar lyrics running off in your head - like your own personal karaoke - and you allowed your voice to carry you along as you started to sway back and forth to the beat; the passion evident in your voice. Almost dancing around the coffee table, you gathered the papers, sheets of music, and other notes together for later reorganizing, completely unaware of the person leaning against the doorframe.
Holding the papers close to your chest, you felt your voice fade as you finished your song and you opened your eyes, quickly taking notice of the man standing there. Your eyes widened as the papers promptly fell to the ground from your startlement; the calm expression on your face quickly dropped into a horrified frown. Justin gave you an apologetic smile, but his eyes were bright with amazement as he spoke up "I’m sorry I startled you. I didn’t know you could sing."
You blinked rapidly, hoping that seeing Justin at the door was all just some bad dream, “Oh, uh, Mr. Timberlake. I’m sorry. I thought your break wasn't over until one-thirty.” You spoke, eyeing the clock on the wall as you were clearly avoiding his last statement before you got onto your knees to begin picking up the fallen papers with your shaking hands.
“I, uh, wanted to grab the lyrics for the next song. Practice a bit.” He spoke, entering the room fully before crouching down to help you gather the fallen papers and music sheets. "But you're avoiding the subject..." He added, slightly amused as he handed you a few papers; watching you, intrigued.
Glancing up at him, you suddenly felt very nervous, more so than before. "I-I'm sorry." You quickly spoke as you tried to focus on picking up the rest of the papers. "I didn't realize you were listening to me..." You replied, your words sort of trailing off as you looked up, finding yourself stuck by the look in his eyes. He looked genuinely interested. When did his eyes become so captivating? Such a deep, ocean blue… You couldn't remember. “Uh, yeah, here you go.” You spoke, swallowing thickly as you handed him the sheet that he wanted, quickly breaking your gaze away from his.
Justin’s smile widened slightly as he took the paper, offering his hand out to you. You looked at his hand, then up at him, hesitating; his eyebrows raised a little, waiting for you to take it. "I'm not going to bite." He spoke up playfully as you hesitated again.
Slowly placing your hand in his, he gave your hand a slight squeeze before he pulled you back onto your feet. "Thanks..." You muttered, anxiety-ridden and embarrassed.
"So, um... About that search for another singer-" Justin began once you were both standing, but you quickly, accidentally interrupted.
"Oh, yeah, don't worry, sir.” You began, noticing how he was still holding your hand, your face feeling intensely warm as you reluctantly pulled your hand away before clearing your throat, “I have plans to contact the ones left on the list after lunch to see their availability."
"Don't contact them," Justin spoke quickly, watching as you turned slightly, placing the small stack of papers on the coffee table. "I want you to sing it."
Your eyes widened again as you snapped your gaze over to him, and your hands faltered at your side, "Huh?" You replied, your jaw dropping slightly, not expecting him to say that. "You do?"
Justin smiled, stepping towards you, "I think you have an incredible voice, Y/N.”
"M- Me?" You stammered, pointing a finger at yourself as he just simply nodded before stuffing his hands in his front Jeans pockets.
"Yeah, and you don’t have to call me ‘sir,’ we’ve known each other long enough for you to just call me Justin." He reminded you, and that was true.
You had known Justin for the past year and a half. And during that year and a half, you had gotten to know the person behind the pop star. You knew his favorite color was baby blue, that he loved ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,’ and liked Coldplay; there was even a time you bought him a pair of sneakers for his birthday that he had mentioned to you, since you knew he loved collecting them. Justin was so sweet, so compassionate, and you never would’ve thought he’d be so funny, but he made you laugh often.
And Justin had gotten to know you as well, your favorite color, your hobbies, and whatnot. If anything, you would call him your friend, but that was the last thing on your mind. All you could think about was the fact that he wanted you to sing with him on the song - and that he said that your voice was incredible...
“You know,” Justin began, walking over to your swivel chair and taking a seat, “I like to think that I know a lot about you, but I didn’t know you could sing.”
“It’s not really something I tell people,” You shrug your shoulders, fiddling with a corner of a piece of paper as you worried on your bottom lip, “But you want me to sing? With you on your song?" You asked, still extremely shocked by his request, trying to wrap your mind around it; though it wasn’t too unbelievable, to an extent, he seemed to have trusted you enough to even bring up the idea in the first place.
Justin shrugged casually, twisting side to side slightly in your chair, legs spread out, "Yeah. I want you to sing it with me." He spoke, glancing at you, "Why? It’s okay if you don’t want to. I just thought that your voice would work really well for the song."
You stared at him, feeling your heart flutter in your chest as the words seemed to catch in your throat, and you could barely breathe, "Wow," You breathed out, "No, I mean, are you sure? I don't know, wouldn't you rather want someone who's actually a singer? I’m not trained to sing, I just do it for fun. I’ll probably mess it all up and ruin it. I'm only a soundboard special-"
"Y/N, sweetheart,” He paused his movements, interrupting you this time, and ending your nervous rant, “I’m sure you won’t ruin anything. I actually believe you can make it better." He insisted again, watching as you stepped a few steps backward to lean against the arm of the sofa, your hand running through your hair, "Would you sing with me?" He asked finally, his eyes focused on your features. You couldn't deny that something was enticing about the way those deep, blue eyes seemed to stare right at your soul.
Your lips parted slightly as you stared at him, unable to speak as he waited patiently for your answer, knowing that he needed one. "I don't know... I mean, I don't really sing well with others around me."
"I, uh, know this is a bit sudden, and it could- could be out of your comfort zone, but could you think about it, please?" He then stood from the chair, taking a few steps to stand in front of you, almost looming from the clear height difference in both of you. “I would really love to work with you. I mean, we already work well together, so this should be a piece of cake."
You didn't say anything for a moment, "I... I will think about it, sir- sorry. I mean, Justin." You winced, only for his expression to soften considerably.
"No, no need to apologize, Y/N." He told you before he began walking towards the door. Pausing, he turned back to face you, his hand pressing against the doorframe that he had previously been leaning against, "Just think about it, okay?"
You watched him leave before collapsing into your chair, your heart was hammering in your chest as you ran a shaky hand through your hair. "Sing with Justin?" You muttered, pulling your fingers out of your hair to stare down at your hand, the hand that Justin had held momentarily, but for what felt like forever, "Wow." You laughed lightly, the corners of your lips twitching.
~~~
It only took you two days to decide and before you knew it, you found yourself in the recording booth with Justin. It was strange; being the one that was going to be recorded, and not the one recording. The room was smaller than you had thought it would be, with soft padding on the walls and the door; it was almost claustrophobic.
Staring down at the music stand before you, you stared down at the blue highlighter that was doing its job of highlighting your lyrics for you. The headphones were heavy on your head, cupped over your ears, blocking out most of the sounds around you. You didn’t want to look up, feeling like everyone was staring at you; you could feel their eyes burning holes into your skull.
"Hey," You heard a muffled voice, taking off your headphones, you looked over at Justin a few feet from beside you at his own music stand and hanging mic. He gave you a reassuring smile, his eyes softening at the nervous expression on your face, "You can do this."
His words somehow managed to make you feel slightly better, enough for you to smile - albeit anxiously - back at him, "Can I?" You muttered to him.
“I know this is a bit intimidating." He began, shrugging a shoulder, his voice low but comforting, "But something that helps me is just imagining I'm somewhere else. Like my bedroom or the shower-"
"The shower?" You laughed a little, feeling yourself relax a little- just like he planned - as he lightly laughed along with you before answering.
"Well, that's where some people usually sing, don't think too much into it, I'm grasping at straws here." Tilting his head slightly as he reaches his hand out. “Or you can hold just my hand, if that’ll help,” He offered out his hand to you as your eyes glanced from his face, to his hand, and back; a small smirk slowly spreading on his face, “I’m not going to bite.”
You sputtered out another small, breathy laugh, “Thanks, J.” Justin’s smirk grew back into a grin at the little nickname as you placed your headphones back on and took his awaiting hand.
With a deep breath, you heard Mosely speak through the speakers, “Y/N, you ready?” His sudden voice startled you slightly as you snapped your head up, seeing him and two writers staring right back at you. You glanced over at Justin one more time before nodding your head, feeling your stomach do flips.
Mosely smiled back, and you were glad that you couldn’t see the amusement in his eyes as you quickly looked down at your lyrics, "Okay, then." He said before looking over at Justin, “Justin, whenever you're ready."
You felt your heart skip a beat when the music started up and Justin soon began singing. Being right there, beside him, was a far different experience than when you were the one outside of the booth; or when you’d hear him mumble a few lyrics during practice. You were overwhelmed by it. He sounded sensational. You glanced over at him, he seemed so calm, and it made sense. He had been singing for years, decades; of course, he'd be so calm, so at ease. Music was his second home. He was born to sing.
You turned your head and kept your eyes down, focusing on the music and your lyrics and before you knew it, it was finally your turn. You let out a small, silent breath as you let the music wash over you, letting it slowly fill you with confidence. Shutting your eyes - having already memorized all your lines - you sang your first couple of lyrics, unable to see the look on Justin's face.
He watched you, the expression on his face unreadable; he only stared, eyes slightly widened, admiring you as you sang his song flawlessly. He had been so glad - proud even that you went out of your comfort zone - that you decided to give this all a try, and now he was sure that he had chosen the perfect singer; no other singer could do it justice. His smile grew as your voice carried throughout the room beautifully, taking note of how your body visibly relaxed, shoulders dropping, softly swaying, letting the music guide you; he was completely entranced by you.
Soon enough, Justin's voice then began to blend in with yours, harmonizing perfectly, and just like that, your singing sessions with him began.
The entire recording went by in a flash and before you knew it, a few weeks had gone by. You and Justin were finished with the song, and you were back behind the soundboard, and for some reason, you sort of missed singing in the booth. Maybe because it helped you get over a few of your fears, or maybe because you got to spend more time with Justin - that wasn’t at a work party, event, and so on. Either way, you were just getting used to singing with him. And had begun to enjoy the experience.
Justin was feeling quite the same. It felt like his time singing with you had gone by in a flash, and it wasn't very long until he found himself falling for you. Don’t get him wrong, he liked you the moment he saw you, but this time, it was different. There were times when he had to stop himself from grinning uncontrollably at the sight or thought of you, even before the both of you sang together, and it scared him a bit. He would close his eyes and see your face, letting your voice wash over him like ocean waves; your voice like a siren pulling him in.
He would also have to remind himself to not stare at you sometimes. There were so many times when he caught himself looking at you as you worked the soundboard through the window as he sang, or were writing in your notebook during a break. Sometimes you would catch him, your eyes meeting his as a breathtaking smile would spread across your lips. He would do anything to see that smile of yours.
He wanted to tell you everything. Everything that was on his mind.
You sat in your chair, listening as Justin sang in the booth. You hummed along to the song, already knowing it all by heart as you double-checked the soundboard - like you usually did when he sang, just in case some button got pushed or a lever was nudged. Taking a glance, you looked up at Justin through the window, only to see him looking right back at you as he sang. You couldn't contain the smile that spread across your face as you watched him. The way he was singing, looking at you so intensely, it was like he was singing the lyrics to his new song just for you. And as cheesy as it sounded, it made your heart skip a beat and your stomach tied up into a couple of knots. You couldn't tear your eyes away.
But you had to, snapping your gaze away from his, you cleared your throat lightly as the song slowly came to a close. You paused the recording after the song completely ended and turned on the mic, "That was great, J," You spoke, before collecting your papers and notebook.
"Yep!" Mosely exclaimed, "That's a wrap for the day."
Grabbing your bag, you slid your notebook and paperwork away for the day before standing from your chair and grabbing your jacket from where it hung on the back of it; shrugging it on.
"Y/N," You heard Justin's voice call to you, making you turn your head, smiling at the man as you finished buttoning up your winter jacket.
"Hmm, yeah, Justin?" You asked, looping the strap of your bag over your head, letting it rest on your left waist. "Is there something you need?"
"I, uh, just thought I'd ask if you wanted to grab dinner with me tonight," He answered, slipping on his own coat. You couldn't help but think that he looked really good as the sunset shone down on him through the window, highlighting his cheekbones, jawline, and the blue of his eyes; casting him in a glow. "I know this really nice restaurant a couple blocks down the road we can go to."
You looked at him, biting your lower lip, "Yeah," You answered finally, "Yeah, I'd love to have dinner with you, Justin." You nodded before glancing away as your cheeks felt warm. You couldn't help the small smile that tugged on the corners of your lips.
Justin grinned as he watched you, feeling the butterflies in his stomach as he placed a hand in the pocket of his jeans, fiddling with his car keys as he walked over to you. "It's a date, then."
Your eyes widened slightly at his words, "Date?" You repeated before mentally slapping yourself. Of course, it was a date. Why else would he ask you?
"Unless you don't want it to be?" Justin replied, his words trailing off slightly as he looked down at you, hoping he didn't misread your interest in him. “We could just go as just friends, if that’s what you want.”
You bit your lower lip again, debating it for a moment, but your mind was made up the moment he asked you to dinner, "No, I- It's a date." You replied, and you were sure that your shy - yet excited - smile was ridiculously large on your face.
"Cool, cool." Justin spoke candidly, trying to hide how nervous you truly made him as he offered you his hand - he hadn’t felt like this in a long time, "Shall we?"
You looked up at him, once again, falling into the depths of his eyes, slipping your hand into his, "You aren’t going to bite, are you?” You asked, surprising yourself with your sudden confidence as Justin just gave you a smirk in return.
“No unless you want me to, baby.” He answered mischievously, feeling a warmth in the pit of his stomach at the sound of your little laugh, your free hand slapping his arm lightly as he intertwined his fingers between yours; squeezing your hand gently.

Album Review: Béla Fleck - Rhapsody in Blue
Not only is George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” resilient enough to last a century, it’s also elastic enough to appear three times on a single album and not grow tiresome.
And Béla Fleck is just the man to make it work, anchoring his Rhapsody in Blue LP - a celebration of the piece’s centenary - with “Rhapsody in Blue(grass),” “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Rhapsody in Blue(s),” which clock in at 12, 19 and five minutes, respectively. The banjo man fleshes out the album with solo versions of Gershwin’s never-recorded, recently discovered “Unidentified Piece for Banjo” and the better-known “Rialto Ripples.”
Recorded with My Bluegrass Heart, “Blue(grass)” is a proverbial walk through the Appalachian Mountains as Fleck, fiddler Michael Cleveland; mandolinist Sierra Hull and her Dobro-playing husband Justin Moses; bassist Mark Schatz; and guitarist Bryan Sutton simultaneously reinterpret and preserve the piece.
Fleck then joins the Virginia Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Eric Jacobsen, aka Mr. Aoife O’Donovan, and replaces piano with banjo on a daring, and successful, bit of musical transplantation, released under its unchanged title.
Which brings us to the truncated “Blue(s),” on which Fleck, mandolinist Sam Bush, Dobro master Jerry Douglas and busy bassist Victor Wooten graft elements of “Mannish Boy” into the “Rhapsody.” It’s respectful to Gershwin’s blueprint while - like its album-mates - adding layers to the already-intricately layered piece.
Grade card: Béla Fleck - Rhapsody in Blue - A-

hey!! I'm obsessed w your writing about butch bea -- it's been super life-giving and I feel so seen when I read it :) lol it's gotten to the point where I am BEGGING my gf to watch warrior nun for the sake of being able to read the butch bea universe... anyways. it's incredible. show-stopping. legendary.
I did have a question, though -- what kind of music do you think bea listens to? to me (read: I'm projecting lol) she'd love "take the sadness out of saturday night" by bleachers, "in defense of my own happiness" by joy oladokun, and boygenius (both the first ep & all three of their solo work). and of course ava loves to sing "solid" by muna to bea.
anyways, again, I LOVE this universe & am very grateful that you've spent so much time & energy fleshing it out :) have a great day!
well i have none of these songs as ones bea would listen to but that’s cool! do whatever u want!! i have no agenda w music ppl fuck w so do ur thing lol
maybe bc i’m in LA, but i think she’s p vibey. lots of frank ocean, moses sumney, blood orange. especially blond & negro swan as like fundamental albums for her. bea is also fun!! i think she loves like alicia keys & tlc, really good classic r&b, & subsequently like solange. also i obviously love arooj aftab but i do stand by like. the supreme holiness in her music so i think bea would rly love it. it’s like profoundly undeniable. in that vein, sufjan stevens & leonard cohen as well. i think bea would also rly love like… karen o, silversun pickups, paramore kinda vibes too when she’s Feeling It. & god help anyone who ever plays a love supreme for her
mm for me ava is a pop girly!! which is my favorite!! i literally mean this w like i think pop is the most supreme genre of all time ever, so like… carly rae! charli xcx! caroline polacheck! she is here to feel! she is here to have fun! she is here to be sexy! she is here to be sad! she is here to be in love! the intelligence & excess of pop & its like silly yet obsessive nature,,, how could ava not fall in love. how could anyone not fall in love. pop forever. + the entirety of the insecure soundtrack (which bea probably has half of on vinyl) — best show of all time re:music. (somewhere in there there’s them watching insecure as an ode to LA but i digress lol). i do think ava also probably loves anything justin vernon does (hymn alternatives, the poet of our generation — a word about gnosis, it ain’t gonna buy the groceries), & also she loves contemporary classical.
both of them are absolutely feral abt florence + the machine, all of her discography but i think her latest album maybe more than anything
