I love when xie lian is a messy bitch. He was genuinely at his worst in book 4 and you can understand where he was coming from in some scenes, and his harsher actions genuinely scar him for life, but he does nearly kill a guy for challenging him in the street. The most endearing part of xie lian, which at first seems to make him really boring, is that he's trying really hard to be a good person. Inside he has so much rage and grief. What I like about him is that he's not REALLY some chosen one with a pure heart, he is just some guy who chooses to be kind

RIGHT IT'S LIKE.. the whole thing about "characters and even 'good' characters should be allowed to have major flaws to make them interesting" is so perfectly illustrated by xie lian, because his kindness and humble nature and high self awareness are such overly generic good guy traits they would bore me to death in an instant if it weren't for the fact that they're so sharply contrasted by the completely self-centered and oblivious person he used to be.

like. he is SUCH a good portrayal of the self-serving nature of saviourism and the rage of someone forcibly bereaved of the privileges they've been entitled to all their life, but the crux of his character is that he genuinely wants to help other people, and the fact that he almost betrays this core value in a fit of violent rage at the apotheosis of his breakdown is why it's such an interesting trait for him in the first place!! he needs those crimes and flaws and past misgivings because it enabled the growth that makes him such a hashtag king!!!!
