News spreads fast in a world so small, so it wasn’t a surprise that everyone knew about Ren’s declaration of the wickedness of Pearl within the hour it was said (if they hadn’t heard Ren howling it already- the man was loud and dramatic and, like the horns, could be heard for miles).
Pearl had left Box hours ago, but she felt like wherever she went, she could still hear Ren’s words. People whispered, not too quietly, as she passed by.
I heard she walks with death
Do you think she actually killed Ren and BigB
She’s gone crazy
Soulmateless behavior
But with boarders keeping her in, she couldn’t escape, and so she ended up stumbling right into Jimmy, who was harvesting some wheat.
“Hello Pearl!” Jimmy beamed down at her, then noticed her expression and he stopped what he was doing at once. “Hey, are you okay?”
“Ren just called me wicked.” Pearl muttered. “That I bring death with me wherever I go. I-” A strangled little noise escaped her mouth, and she staggered.
“Oh my. That’s not nice at all now is it.” Jimmy pushed a barrel under her so she could sit down, and pulled over another so he could sit too. Pearl collapsed on it miserably, not really crying, but just unable to do much of anything at all.
“It hurts, Jimmy.”
Jimmy chuckled quietly. “Oh, I understand that completely.”
Pearl looked at him, suddenly remembering the rumors of the past. Jimmy Solidarity. The canary in the coal mines. The lover who death loved to kiss. Hell, she had whispered about him, always joking how he would always be the first to die.
“Oh. Right.”
Jimmy shrugged. “It hurts. I’m sorry it’s you this time around, I really am.”
“How do you deal with it?” Pearl asked. “Knowing that you…” she trailed off, gesturing vaguely.
“Just keep going, I suppose. Nothing else to do really but try to not let the weight of death push you into an early grave.”
It wasn’t comfort, nor hope. But perhaps a way to keep on going. The canary and the wicked girl sat in the field of wheat and felt bad for themselves and each other. It just kind of seemed like the right thing to do, honestly.

“The President tried to carjack the presidential limo to GTA his way to the Capitol on January 6th” was not something I expected to hear today.

The Dream Runners - Shveta Thakrar
Seven years ago, Tanvi was spirited away to the subterranean realm of Nagalok, where she joined the ranks of the dream runners: human children freed of all memory and emotion, who collect mortal dreams for the entertainment of the serpentine, immortal naga court.
But when one of Tanvi's dream harvests goes awry, she begins to remember her life on earth. Panicked and confused, she turns to the one mortal in Nagalok who might be able to help: Venkat, the dreamsmith responsible for collecting the dream runners' wares and shaping them into the kingdom's most tantalizing commodity. And as they search for answers, a terrifying truth begins to take shape--one that could turn the nagas' realm of dreams into a land of waking nightmare.
tw: brainwashing, grief, kidnapping, mind control, trauma
