The official first game Women's World Chess Championship begins in approximately 2 hours! Very exciting for me as a new player who thoroughly enjoyed Nepo-Ding and all the emotion and fanfare and drama that came with it. But I couldn't help but notice: there is a distinct lack of promotion for the women's chess championship on FIDE's part. In some form this could be blamed on general inadequacy; FIDE struggled to even bill a location for the 2023 men's championship until the 11th hour and the event itself was. Not the most glorious, to put it lightly. It was to the point that they were being questioned by members of the chess media about if the event was even going to happen until the announcements were made. So it could be as simple as a bumbling organization doing their inevitable dropping of the ball on a prestigious event that will go on to be great for chess in spite of them. But do you want to know what the CEO of FIDE thought was smart to post this morning?
Tumblr media
Encouraging people to shit on the women's world championship HOURS after the opening ceremony (which they did NOT make available to stream online either btw) is on its own, clear misogyny on the part of FIDE's highest ranking official, but it actually gets worse.
The WWCC does not yet have an official website. We are HOURS away from the first move.
There are two players billed to commentate the games: GM Alik Gershon (1994 under 14 world champion) and GM Xu Yi (world #716 of all players). No offense to these accomplished players, but neither of them are recognizable chess players to even dedicated viewers and neither are competitive globally. By contrast: the official FIDE stream for the men's championship featured GM Irina Krush (former US women's chess champion) and GM Daniil Dubov (2018 world rapid chess champion, currently ranked 28th of all players). As pointed out by twitter user @ChessProblem, the chess dot com commentary team is comparatively stacked: GM Judit Polgar (former world chess championship candidate, former world 8th ranked player, former women's 1st ranked player for 25 years consecutively, considered the GOAT of women's chess), GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (former women's world chess champion, women's world rapid chess champion, swiss national champion, both open and women's, Russian women's national champion), IM Jovanka Houska (9 time British women's chess champion)
I'm not (yet) a competitive women's player, and I am probably never going to reach the level of any of the players I've mentioned here, but if I was a younger women's player earning my norms and excited about this championship match, I think I would be equally if not more frustrated than I am right now. This is embarrassing, but women in chess unfortunately know all too well how FIDE rolls.
In fact, Susan Polgar, Judit's older sister called out FIDE for refusing to give her her final norm for years because of the misogyny of FIDE as she was on pace to break the record set by Bobby Fischer for youngest person to reach the status of grandmaster (GM), a record eventually broken by Judit. Unfortunately this year, there's a continuation of a long and awful trend in FIDE of treating women in chess as inherently weaker and less interesting players and it frustrates me as a woman player, especially as a trans player.
However, if like me you want to watch the match you can watch it here:

bruh, literally all the men are either nice to beth, or look down on her because she's a newbie, not because she's a woman. today, in 2023, men say that women can never beat men at chess on an elo level because men have superior spatial awareness, and the only value alexandra botez has is her looks and tits, and this show wants us to believe that men were nice and dandy about being beaten by a teenage girl back in the 60's? when you hear the stories of judit polgar, the real female world champion back in the day, who was essentially beth, the way she was treated was AWFUL. she had to hear shit like this daily: 'However, Kasparov expressed early doubts: "She has fantastic chess talent, but she is, after all, a woman. It all comes down to the imperfections of the feminine psyche. No woman can sustain a prolonged battle."'

So now that FIDE, the entity responsible for international chess, banned trans people from chess for the next 2 years at least and took away titles that trans men got pre-transition...
Are they gonna require trans people to be on hormones to play chess after that? And if so, do they really think that testosterone makes you a better chess player? Or is the chess community just going to continue to flat-out discriminate against every and all trans people like they do with women without any logical reasoning?
Like... Aren't the chess people supposed to be like... Intelligent and logical?
Oh wait, right, most chess GMs are still men and they don't want to lose the status quo after people realise that the differences in Elo literally come down to investing in women like you do with men. Most GMs in the women's right now have not been treated like superstars and don't get that extra 24/7 training when they are kids like their male counterparts do.
Look at Judit Polgar, who won against Fisher, Kasparov and Carlson when they were top players. Or at the current highest Elo player in the women's, Hou Yifan, who "expressed that she doesn’t have much time for chess alongside her education. And she reaffirmed how chess isn’t the top priority in her life."..
Like, bros, you need to calm your tits and fucking stop belittling women when the best woman right now isn't even bothered to take your cute little game seriously.

My comments under the cut:
I wanted to do a chapter that focused on the admin side for a long time (longer than 15 months, heh heh) because surely an organisation like Death Squadron is just lousy with paperwork. You can't tell me that after the Emperor died the entire admin department didn't do lines of space cocaine for a week straight trying to put new systems in place. I imagine Death Squadron's Space IT department is at permanent war with Coruscant's. Lawyers starting fistfights because the entire legal system fell apart overnight and they don't have to use their words anymore. I wanted to do a chapter of characters dealing with that and the more mundane side of things.
"Han adjusted the frequency band on the anderon meter and checked the engine again." - Anderon meters are real machines that measure vibrations. Which I found out after googling the fancy star wars device name I made up. Turns out it's a real thing!
Most of the foods mentioned in Sienna's Great Pastry Heist are real lore according to wookieepedia, except for kriffake mushrooms. I was inspired by shiitake mushrooms.
"I heard there was going to be an Alderaanian player competing, and she was considered one of the favourites." - Inspired by Judit Polgar, my favourite women's chess player and one of if not the greatest women's player of all time. Perhaps best known for beating Garry Kasparov while she was young and forcing him to be less of a dick about women playing chess.
I've had Piett's sister and his brother in law planned out for MONTHS all I want to do is talk about Mavis Piett and her family trying to make it work during the civil war. I love them so so much <3 Does Piett have an in-lore sister? Dunno, don't care. I love Wishful and Frodogenic's versions of her, I wanted to do my own.
"then he’s taking Alsakan for their political support," - Alsakan is a real planet near Coruscant and apparently known for their politics. So this is somewhat lore accurate, for no reason.
“I dream of it, sometimes,” Leia said, “of beings referring to me as General Organa, and it sounds natural. I see different bases and different uniforms in my mind’s eye. I can feel red salt under my fingernails.” - referencing the sequel trilogy. Not the first time Leia's dreamed of it.
"Mon had a speech prepared about nature and nurture that she was quite proud of." - it was ME. I had a speech planned out in my first draft that I could not for the life of me get to flow naturally in the convo. I rewrote that thing like three or four times from the ground up. Conversations are SO HARD.
"Greyvile held the vibroblade out. “Dathomirian steel. Very rare." - Dathomirian steel being a reference to damascus steel. It is SO funny to me to keep giving Piett all these cool blades and watch him lose them before he can use them. Will he do it again? Maybe!
"Death Squadron Conditions of Service part Grek section Eight: Remuneration," - I downloaded declassified aussie military contracts from the 70s to get a baseline of what sounded reasonable to put in a contract. Yes it was way too much effort for two lines of dialogue. No I have not learned my lesson.
"“Did you pass my message along to the Head Bioengineer?” Dampa murmured" - she's trying to buy drugs.
Dampa's speech patterns are based on this Canadian engineer's I enjoy on youtube called AvE, although he turned out to be kind of Shit, but I do like the way he plays with words. I take idioms I hear around (so far down the flute he can't toot a tune, is from a tour guide I heard in a place called Lighting Ridge several years ago. A day late and a dollar/credit short is something I learned researching for another fic also several years ago) and star wars-ify them. Often they come out illegible but that's okay.
"Kirff'll mach-three the air distributor in no time" - shit'll hit the fan.
Picking first names for Venka and Kallic was AGONY I changed my mind SO many times. Tom Venka suits him so well but alas, that's Wishful's name and not canon. But I adore Pico Venka, pico meaning 10^-12 and I think flowing very well with his last name. Alasdair is an old scottish gaelic name meaning "the one who repels men" (in like a war/fighting way) but I like how I used it too >:)
So yeah! A lot of thoughts this chapter. I have the next one planned out, and a few plot points for the one after that, but my main priority now is the last chapter of Galaxy Revolves.

JUDIT POLGAR // CHESS GRANDMASTER
“She is a Hungarian chess grandmaster, generally considered the strongest female chess player of all time. In 1991, she achieved this title at the age of 15 years old, the youngest to do so, breaking the world record of Bobby Fischer. She is the only woman to have been a serious candidate for the World Chess Championship, which she participated in 2005. In 2014, she announced her retirement from competitive chess and in 2015 was elected as the new captain and head coach of the Hungarian national men’s team. She received Hungary’s highest decoration, the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary and was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame.”

Such a pleasure to read that the great chess master Garry Kasparov lost in 42 moves to Hungarian chess player Judit Polgar, whom he once called the ′′ circus puppet ". Kasparov had said of Polgar: ′′ Stop chess, have children...".

Idk if you open links (I swear it’s nothing weird/disturbing in terms of it being g**e or sexual content) https://youtube.com/shorts/WXY9cOoHvtk?feature=share
It’s a short of Bobby Fischer’s thoughts on women playing chess. The comments. I thought that males would have some sort of humanity for women but… nope instead they make jokes about it and say it’s “brutally honest” get me off this planet
if it makes you feel better, gary kasparov said similar things, particularly in reference to a young judit polgar (when in fact in an earlier game against her, he CHEATED by moving a piece after he had removed his hand from it, but the chess tournament not only refused to rescind the results and declare his loss afterwards, they disappeared the official match footage. but video footage became publicly available in 2019 from a documentary and it is unanimously agreed by chess players that he cheated. but that's a whole other long story).
a couple years later she thrashed him so hard he changed his opinion. the polgar sisters are proof that it's nurture, not nature.
