in your post about jttw 1986 you said "okay its not the best version but it still one of the greats" is there another version that you personally feel is the "best"? (i know thats all a matter of opinion! maybe my question should instead be what versions do you like the best?)
Well, I mean that more as I would recommend 1986 to any Journey to the West FAN but I can't recommend to it just anyone really.
Because it is one of the best. If not the best. Literally paved the way for so much more media to be made due to its influence and because of it, we have so much more adoptions.
But also... it's very 80s. Which is the best way I can describe why people might not enjoy it if they aren't already interested in Xiyouji.
It's very exaggerated in humorous ways don't get me wrong and I love and adore it with all my heart. I just know that a lot of people don't appeal to that kind of humor or are willing to sit through the slower scenes as they are taking more pauses to set the scenes.
But the cast is an all-star group and honestly, they are... perfect.
Liu Xiao Ling Tong set the standard of what a Sun Wukong actor should be. Both human but monkey. Respectable but also mischivious. A combination where he put his whole body into the performance and utterly sold every scene that not once did I think I was looking at a man in a monkey suit. I was looking a Sun Wukong.
So I would say, it's is the best but also I can't just suggest to anyone starting out Xiyouji unless they really say "I want an accurate retelling of the novel." And while I know 1986 isn't a one-to-one it is fairly loyal to the source material
Personally, when I try to get friends into JTTW material I suggest the 1996 tv show as that does have more entertaining moments and very emotionally driven character scenes. Or if they are interested more in animation I suggest Hero is Back or Monkey King Reborn to at least get their feet wet into the story and maybe push for the 1999 tv series as well. And if they really enjoyed that stuff then I would suggest Westward the anime as that requires prior knowledge of Xiyouji to really understand it.
I haven't seen all JTTW material, of course not, but there are so many goods ones out there that I think anyone can find a JTTW media they can enjoy to their tastes.

I'm watching the 1986 Journey to the West TV show with English subtitles and I love how Monkey immediately reveals the second he meets Tripitaka that he is completely unequipped to understand what keeps a human person breathing. He's out of the mountain for 2 (two) minutes, is given a hat and a title, and then spooks the mortal's non-magical horse for funsies.
He is so thoroughly unaware of how squishy a mortal guy is at this point that Tripitaka is IMMEDIATELY less safe, despite Monkey's lack of ill-intent. It is so funny.
It's also funny watching Tripitaka try to understand how tf he's supposed to control this literal god he's in charge of now for some reason while trying to be polite and a good teacher and like, oh my god he just EVISCERATED THAT TIGER Oh shit wow okay coolcoolcoolcoolcoool

I've been watching the 1986 Journey To The West, and I really wish I had the energy or skill to animate it. It's so good. It's cheesy, and dramatic, and- just- perfect.

Redraw of a 1986 Sun Wukong shot I really liked
[ID: An illustration of Sun Wukong scratching his cheek and looking up and off to the right side. Across his shoulder is draped a blue robe with a pink and white stripe. Next to him is a screencap of the frame referenced from the 1986 Journey to the West show, with 1986 SWK in the same pose and outfit. The screencap is captioned "1986 JTTW Episode 1- around 21:15." The battleship sporting a turtle-like back and the head of a dragon – the [Turtle Dragon]. The Star Relic Lee Jihye and the kids earned by clearing the 'Next City' scenario revealed itself before our very eyes.
However, I couldn't help but wonder if it was okay for us to ride that. Because in the 'Journey to the West'…
[Star Relic, 'Turtle Dragon', corresponds with the ⸢Journey to the West Remake⸥!]
(As the group fell into danger and struggled to move forward, a gigantic white turtle Yogoe appeared to give them a ride.)
[A portion of judges are satisfied by the minutely-detailed reflection of the original story.]
[20 additional points have been awarded!]
Its me. Im the person awarding points cause i was waiting to see the turtle show up and then wenttt ooooooohhhhh. Cause. Pre-established turtle 😘 👌🏻 🌊 🐢

JJ Lin singing his arrangement of Nǚ'ér Qíng 女儿情, from talent show 梦想的声音 Sound of My Dream (2016)
The original song 女儿情 appears in the 1986 西游记, during the traveling group's stay in the Kingdom of Women. The song is sung by the Queen of the Kingdom of Women, proclaiming her (forbidden, pining) love for Tang Monk. The choice to splice in Jay Chou's Chrysanthemum Terrace 菊花台 adds in the pain of rejection into the narrative of the song, magnificent 🤯💔😭
lyrics & my english translation below [link to alt translation of the original song]
鸳鸯双栖 蝴蝶双飞 // Mandarin ducks* a-paired, butterflies fly in duo 满园春色惹人醉 // drunk on the energy of springtime that fills the garden, 悄悄问圣僧 // I gently ask the holy monk, 女儿美不美, 女儿美不美? // do you find girls pretty / aren't women beautiful? [do you fancy me?] 说什么王权富贵? // forget [my] royal power or immense wealth! 怕什么戒律清规?// [do you] fear your Buddhist principles enforcing celibacy? 只愿天长地久 // As long as the heavens and earth exist, 与我意中人紧相随 // [I want to be] tightly at the side of my beloved 爱恋伊,爱恋伊 // loving them, loving them 愿今生长相随 // may we be together for the rest of this life** 【from Chrysanthemum Terrace 菊花台】 (crowd does nuts, & I'm dead, emotionally destroyed) 菊花残满地伤 // chrysanthemum petals, wounded, scattered all over the floor 你的笑容已泛黄 // your smile already wilting/fading (yellow) 花落人断肠 // as the flowers fall, [my] gut wrenches 我心事静静躺 // my thoughts quietly languish ((slain dead on the ground, T-posing)) 北风乱夜未央 // the north wind chaotically rushes in the dusk 你的影子剪不断 // but your shadow lingers on and on 徒留我孤单 在湖面成双 // leaving me by myself, with only the company of my reflection in the lake * mandarin ducks are symbolic of devoted monogamy ** common declaration of intense romantic love is to say 'in this life (incarnation) and the next"
