“昔の和歌なんかには美しい表現があるんですよ”

ダブルが4枚目となるシングル「Shake」をリリース

すでにインタビューも3度目となるダブル。熱心な読者なら、彼女達が姉妹であるとか、ましてやR&Bシンガーであるとか言う必要もないだろう。前号でも触れた通り、今回4枚目となるマキシ・シングル「Shake」がリリースされる。ダブルの二人がラップにも挑戦している表題曲「Shake」は、パーティーを主題としたフロア・ライクな曲。そして前回のマミー・Dに続き、今回リミックスを手掛けたのはジブラ。もちろん自身もラップを披露しているこっちは、オリジナルとはうって変わり地下の臭い漂うダヴィーなリミックスとなった。もう1曲の「Make Me Happy」は細かく打ち込まれたドラムとピアノによる、ハネたビートの曲。両曲とも姉妹ならではのコンビネーションもバッチリ。ダンサーと共に踊るダブルが見られるヴィデオもかなりカッコイイ仕上がりなので要チェック。では、以前に比べるとかなりインタビュー馴れしてきた二人のインタビューを、どうぞ。

▶　「Shake」のヴィデオを見せてもらったんですが、カッコイイですね。

T (TAKAKO) 　むこうのヴィデオっぽくしたかったんで、狙い通りにできました。

S (SACHIKO) 　私もがんばって踊ったんで、みんなも(見て)踊って下さい。

▶　その新曲「Shake」はやはりクラブでかかることを狙って作ったんですか？

T　まず、今までの曲は一人用の曲を二人で歌ってたって感じだったんで、(今回は)二人で歌う形の曲を作りたかった。あとはライブで映える曲を作ろうってことで。

S　このくらいのテンポならパーティー・ソングしかないだろうと思って。パーティー・ソングにはどんな歌詞がいいんだろうかと考えて、具体的な言葉を入れるよりも何を言ってるか分らないくらいの歌詞にしました。

▶　日本の歌もの全体を見ると、トラックやボーカル・テクニックに比べて歌詞が追いついていないと感じることがあるんですが、それについてはどう考えていますか？

T　日本語だと現実的、具体的な表現になってしまって、歌詞が飛び込んできたときに粋じゃない感じになっちゃうんですよ。日本語っていうのは、そもそも直接表現することが美しいとされるような言語じゃないんですよ。

S　例えば昔の和歌なんかだと、女の人に声をかけとけばよかったというときに”素敵な花の枝を折ってくるのを忘れた”だとか、あなたに会えなくて寂しいと言う代わりに“袂が（涙に濡れて）毎日重くなる”とか、そういう美しい表現をするんですよ。

T　そういう日本語の美しい表現をこれから作っていきたいですね。

▶　逆に「Make Me Happy」の歌詞は英語が中心ですね。

T　もうちょっと練れば(日本語でも)できたのかもしれないけど、この楽曲を生かすには英語が一番だと思って。サビ以外は全部英語なんですよ。だから、この曲は日本語を今までの英語扱いにした感じ。

S　でも、全部英語で作っても使い古されてる単語ばかりになってしまって、稚拙な歌詞になるんですよ。今新しく作ってるのも日本語と英語が混ざってるもの。

▶　今回は英語のラップにも挑戦してますよね。

T　サッちゃんのパート、カッコよくないですか？

S　“どういうラップが（曲に）合うんだろう?��って考えて、レコーディング当日のブースの中でもいろいろなスタイルで何十回もやった結果、こうなりました。私の歌詞はちょっとエロチックで、大人っぽい感じ。タカちゃんの方は“みてみて私たち”っていう。

T　やんちゃな感じ。

▶　「Shake」のリミキサーにジブラさんを選んだのはなぜ？

T　ジブラさんのアルバムを聴いて、そのセンスがスゴク信頼できたので、お任せしました。

▶　ミックスはデイブ・ダーリントンですよね。

T　ボーカリストの人がこんなに満足のいくミックスは初めてだったていう話を噂で聞いて、ぜひお願いしたいと願っていたところ、偶然日本に来ていてそこをガシッと押さえてやってもらいました。願えばかなうんですね(笑)。

▶　前回の「Bed」からステップ・アップした点は？

T　前回と違って、今回はメロディーと歌詞を同時に考えたから、自分達の曲っていう意識が強いですね。今回の方がもっと自分達のやりたい事がやれてきてるんですよ。その分スゴく責任も大きくて、満足感もスゴく大きくなりました。

▶　次のリリースの予定は？

T　自分達の方向性をようやく形にできるようになりましたが、次はそれまでの過程のシングルを含めてのミニ・アルバムになります。セカンド・シングルの「Desire」はリミックス、ファースト・シングルの「For Me」は歌い直しが入ります。アルバムの方も楽しみにしていて下さい。

S　それと、ぜひライブも見に来て下さい。

ok so

for YN -

met usagi and kuina in middle school they’re besties; this was a funny story, so basically usagi and kuina were playing like volleyball and usagi hit the ball too hard and it went flying hitting yn in the face. usagi profusely started to apologize while kuina was just laughing at the distressed usagi. after that those three became a trio.

met Ann through mira and kuina in highschool; mira was walking to where yn was and she was with Ann, introducing Ann to Yn. It took them a while to hit it off since they were polar opposites but Yn ended up to rub off on Ann, bow they listen to the newest kRnB & jRnB together.

met arisu in highschool from usagi before usagi started dating arisu — theyre like the brother sister dynamic; at first arisu was always getting on yn’s nerves for being so close to usagi but soon he started being petty towards her thus creating the brother sister dynamic. one of the closest relationship on this smau.

met heiya through arisu in high school — besties part 2; heiya’s love for makeup and yn’s love for fashion made them click so easily that whenever they’re together its nonstop talks and gossip about the latest fashion trends and makeup trends. mira was added alongside the trio.

yn knows abt saori bc of mira but hasnt fully met her; she would like to meet her bc of all the things kuina and mira say about her.

mira is her closest cousin — theyre like cousin besties; told huge secrets to eachother and are literally eachothers ride or dies.

met chishiya in like fifth/fourth grade and has declared him to be her sworn rival

for chishiya -

met mira in fifth/fourth grade and they clicked — always around eachother (platonic)

met kuina in highschool through ann and mira — instantly became the brawns and the braina duo. if he isnt with mira he is probably with kuina. (platonic)

met ann through kuina in highschool; although chishiya has seen Ann through the hall ways and taken interest in her, he never tried to talk to her—kuina soon introduced ann to mira and chishiya.

met arisu in beginning of highschool; arisu and chishiya had very different views on different subjects and life, they clashed. chishiya liked that making him talk to arisu more. they have a very bro bro/always fighting brothers relationship.

met heiya through arisu and kuina in university actually; chishiya found heiya interesting when he found out he did archery.

met usagi through arisu and kuina end of high school year; chishiya already knew about usagi when he saw her climb over the fence trying to leave campus, thought she was an interesting case.

met saori in middle school; introduced saori to mira and those three clicked instantly. saori was a very active working girl, chishiya liked that for her, overtime they became besties and go to cafes when saori isnt busy working.

met yn in fifth/fourth grade; was constantly beating her in test scores, yn became upset causing them to become “academic rivals”. yn beat him in subjects he wasnt good at and he beat yn in subjects she wasnt good at it. and tbh chishiya has felt a little butterflies for some time but has never really admitted it pushing them to the side.

Hi there! Welcome to the place where you can satisfy your curiosity about me (albeit a bit overconfident but still, you are here because you are curious about me, right?)

Ok so, I go by the name Ella Angelique and most of my closest friends usually call me Angie or Enji. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t mind if you gave me a new nickname because I love having any nicknames from my friends, as long as it’s not offensive. I have reached my legal age and if it matters, I’m a Scorpio sun that preferably to be addressed by feminine pronouns.

Music

I tend to go with pop, alternative, rnb, and hip-hop music, but sometimes I also listen to loud music when I need to be distracted. Taylor Swift (I’m a proud swiftie!!), SZA, Ella Mai, Kehlani, Cigarettes After Sex, Yerin Baek, Reality Club, Ariana Grande, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Jannabi, Big Naughty, Be'o, Ash Island, Chase Atlantic (+ new entry) and The Weeknd are among my favorite musicians. However, I do enjoy J-Pop and Jrnb on occasion, albeit infrequently.

Aside from the music genres and musicians mentioned above, I also enjoy K-Pop in general. Treasure and aespa are two of my favorites, with Sukhoon and Ningselle as my main. But don’t worry, I often listen to other K-Pop songs all the time! Especially some YG artists’ songs (psstt.. 🤫 I’m a YGA stan).

Movie/Series

This is funny to explain because I used to dislike movies, but recently I’ve spent a lot of time watching movies that I believe suit my tastes very well. So, basically I’m into Asian movies, particularly Japanese (ALL JAPANESE MOVIES ARE GOOD) and the majority of what I watch is Ghibli Movies.

Apart from movies, I occasionally watch series (if I have a lot of time), but boredom often haunts me every time I watch a series, so I can’t remember what series I’ve watched 😔 (but right now I’m gathering intentions to watch The Summer I Turned Pretty and Todome No Kiss, so please pray for me).

Anime, Manga & Manhwa

If you thought I was a normal person, you were mistaken because I am not 😩 It’s impossible for me to like Japanese movies without also enjoying anime and manga. Although I’m not as enthusiastic as I once was, I still enjoy watching anime (only if it fits to my taste). One Piece, Attack on Titan, Fruits Basket, My Hero Academia, One Punch Man, Death Note, Black Clover, Hunter x Hunter, Dororo, Banana Fish, Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen are some of my all-time favorite anime.

As for manga, I rarely read it and usually stick to anime sequels (if any). Some of the manga that I am currently (and have been reading) are One Punch Man, Tokyo Revengers, Spy x Family, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Haikyuu, and Oshi No Ko.

Apart from that, I also enjoy reading manhwas, though not as frequently (well, manhwas and webtoons are the same, right?) If so, then I’m not going to sit around without mentioning my favorite webtoon. Some of my favorite webtoons that I think are irreplaceable are Lookism, Wind Breaker, How to Fight, Dice, Wonderwall, The God of Highschool, Questism, Omniscient Reader and Denounce.

Books

I used to be someone who enjoys reading books (especially fiction) because I find it fascinating and sometimes I unconsciously enter into the story. But as I get older, I find that reading books is boring and makes me sleepy:( I tried to get excited about reading my book again by buying a book (which I thought would be fun), but I didn’t finish it because, yeah.... I think it’s boring, until I finally found some books that really suit my taste. The books that I think really suit my tastes are:

新生DOUBLEのアルバムは“ストレート"なR&B

TAKAKOのソロとして再始動したDOUBLEが、早くもアルバムを完成させた。「Double」と題された本作のレコーディングはすべてアメリカはNYで行われ、制作陣には、ブライアン・アレキサンダー・モーガン、エディー・F&ダレン・ライティー、ローランド・クラークといった大御所から、 DJスピナ周辺人脈のシンガーとして最近注目を集めているアンジェラ・ジョンソンや新人プロデューサー・ユニットであるブラック・オパール・エンターテインメントなどが名を連ねている本作は、間違いなく“R&B" と呼べるアルバムに仕上がっている。

―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――

歌がもたらす特有の黒いグルーヴ感、その暖かなグルーヴに身をまかせた時の心地よさ。男女問わず“恋愛力”を高めてくれる詞の世界など、R&Bの持つ魅力はいろいろあると思う。しかし、そういった魅力が我が国の音楽シーン、またはリスナーにどれだけ伝わっているのか？さらには日本でストレートなR&Bを表現方法として可能なのか？現時点でまだまだ発展状態にある日本のR&Bシーン (期待を込めてこう呼びます)において、その答えはまだ見えてはいないと思うが、このDOUBLEのアルバム「Double」、そして彼女の存在がそこに一筋の光明をもたらしたのは、間違いないだろう。

Interview ①

▷まずは、アルバムのレコーディングを終えた感想から聞かせてください。

「今は終わった~っていう感じですね(笑)。とにかく時間がなくて、約2ヶ月で6曲ぐらい仕上げたんですよ。特に昨日終わった "Untouchable"は歌詞に苦戦してたんで、「絶対間に合わない」って思ってたんですが、なんとか終わりましたね。今でも信じられないです。自分でも良くやったなと思いますね」

▷NYでレコーディングしてみて、どうでしたか?

「最近は、普段の生活でも勝手に英語が出てきちゃうことがありますね」

▷では、各収録曲について聞かせてください。まず先行シングルの“Angel” は、アンジェラ・ジョンソンによるプロデュースですね。

「実はこれは、最初DJスピナのデモとして聞かせてもらったものなんですよ。それで気に入ったんでやりたいってことを言ったら、実はアンジェラ・ジョンソンの曲で。彼女と実際会ってみたら、最初からシンパシーを感じましたね。彼女はトラックを作って歌も歌ってるんで、「女性もプロデュースとかもやらないと」っていう話をして、お互いに意気投合しましたね。でも、レコーディングは特に厳しかったですね(笑)。常に「フラット、フラット、シャープ、シャープ」って指摘が飛んでくるんですよ(笑)。だから「どこが悪いの?」って思いつつ歌ってたんですけど(笑)、ラフ・ミックスが上がった時点で聴いてみたら、音がはずれてないのがすごく気持ちいいって感じで、耳触りが違うんですよ。彼女の音楽的なスタイルは、ローリンとかメアリー・Jよりももうちょっと古い感じの、かなりアコースティックな感じなんですよね。だからヴォーカルにあんまりエフェクトとかをかけないんですよ。そうすると細かい音程の狂いなどのアラが見えてきちゃうという場合もあるんで、すごく厳くやってくれたんだなと思って。それと、仕事に対する姿勢も違いましたね。必ず時間通りに来るし、仕事も手を抜かない。ステファニー・クックなんかは妊婦さんで、常に食べてて、常に眠くて、常にトイレに行ってみたいな感じでしたけど(笑)。"Angel" と "Untouchable"、あとブライアン(・アレキサンダー・モーガン)のプロデュースの "I'm In Love" と "Uh Huh" もアンジェラにヴォーカル・ディレクションしてもらいました。彼女、来年の2月くらいにデビューするみたいですよ」

▷これまでにもDJ KAORIによるリミックスなどもありましたが、オリジナル・ヴァージョンで海外の女性プロデューサーを起用するのは始めてですよね。どうでした?

「他にも "Love Of Mine" でトロイ・パターソンともやったんですけど、特に女性だから起用するという意識はないんでね。でも、同じ女性が作ってるってことで共感する部分、感覚として似てる部分っていうのはけっこうあるんじゃないかと思いますね。それはカオリさんにしてもそうで、最初に彼女のDJを聴いた時に「このDJ 誰なんだろう？いい曲ばかりかけるな」と思ってたら、それがカオリさんだったんですよ」

Interview ②

▷海外では音楽制作に関わる女性は多いんですかね?

「むしろ女性が関わっている割合は日本の方が高いんじゃないかと思いますよ。歌謡曲でも詞を書いてるのが女性ってことが多いですよね」

▷さきほどのアンジェラ・ジョンソンのレコーディングとは逆に、ラフさがいい結果に出ている曲はありますか?

「3曲目の "Stay With Me" なんかそうだと思います。その(レコーディングの)日は体調も良くなかったんですね。だから荒っぽいんだけど、声が出ないことに対しての一生懸命さも出てて、勢いがあっていいって感じですね。しかも中断しないで一気に録ったんで、それもいい方向に出てる。この曲はかなり好きですね」

▷その "Stay With Me" のヴォーカル・プロデュースを手がけているのはヴィニー・ミランダですが、彼が所属するブラック・オバール・エンターテイメントについて教えてください。

「ウォーレン・J・マクレー、オードリー・マーテルズ、そしてヴィニー・ミランダで組んでいるユニットですね。 "Stay With Me"と"Home"はブラック・オパールのプロデュースですね。オードリーとヴィニーは仮歌を歌ったり、ヴォーカルのディレクションをしたりするんですよ」

▷プロデュース・チームなんですね。それと、"U"と "Untouchable"のリリックはアルバム中でも毛色が違うと感じましたが。

「いいところに気がつきましたね(笑)。両方ともエディー・Fのプロデュースなんですけど、彼はヒップホップ寄りの人じゃないですか。私は基本的に、トラックやメロディーからインスパイアされて歌詞を書くことが多いんです。彼の曲からはすごく攻撃的なイメージを受けたんですね。ヒップホップ的なアグレッシヴさがあるというか、非常に男性的というか。だから歌詞も攻擊的なものが浮かんできたんですよね」

▷クレジットの頭に、ALL CREATIVE　DIRECTION：DOUBLEとありますが、やはりその部分が前作の「Crystal」と最も違��点なのでしょうか。

「��うですね。そこは完全に徹底できたんで、文句なしですね。ただ今回、時間的な問題で日本人のクリエイターとやれなかったのは悔やまれますね。でも、自分でもこのアルバムには満足しています」

▷また、シングルの "Angel" には "U" のKREVAによるリミックスが収録されていますね。彼は今年のB・ BOY バークのMCバトルで2年連続チャンピオンになりましたが、プロデューサー/リミキサーとしての KREVAをどう評価しています?

「すばらしいと思います。このリミックスもポップな要素もあってすごい好きですね。「I Like lt」という感じです (笑)。流れとしては "Bed" のリミックスとかにも通じる部分もあると思います」

▷シングル・カット済みの "Handle" ではF.O.Hと、そして最近平井堅の "Love Or Lust" にも参加してましたが、男性ヴォーカルとのからみの方が自分のヴォーカルも引き立つと思います?

「どうなんでしょう? それはあまり意識してないんですが、平井堅さんは男性にしては声が高いじゃないですか。で、彼がコーラスをやってる部分を聴いて、時々自分の声と聴き間違えるんですよ。すごい自分の声と似てるよなと思ったりはしましたが。あと、"Love Of Mine" は海外の男性の方に歌ってもらいたいなと思ってて、アメリカ人の男性に歌ってもらったんですよ。この人は、歌い方がすごいセクシーで中性的でした。あと、例えば「朝の金の日がWakes me up」っていうところを訛った日本語で歌ってもらってるんですけど、彼はスペイン語も話す人で、スペイン語には日本語に似た発音が多くあるらしいんで、レコーディングはスムーズにいきましたね。その他、"Home" と "Love Of Mine"はステファニーに、"Angel" と "Untouchable"はアンジェラ・ジョンソンにやってもらったりと、今回のアルバムはバック・コーラスを海外の方にやってもらってます。それは、私の場合一人でコーラスをやると厚みが足りないかなと思う場合もあったんで。特にステファニーは声が深くて、SACHIKOの声にそっくりだなと思ったりしました」

▷最後に、アルバム・リリース後に単独でライヴをやる予定はあるんでしょうか?

「今のところないです。でも、仕事でキッチリやるってよりも、軽くクラブに行ってちょこっと歌うくらいから始めたいですね」
