Jumping off of comments on this post from @cloud-based-and-rainpilled about that interviewer calling David's outfit "camp" and the British press in general, because you just unlocked a memory in me of the movie Velvet Goldmine.
It's about two rock stars in the 1970s glam rock era (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ewan McGregor), and the British press is shown using the word camp to describe them in one sequence, and the parallels to the press describing Michael and David after the NTAs are making me scream:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also worth noting is that JRM's character is married to a woman and also unapologetically androgynous/bisexual and very much having sex with/in love with EM's character at the same time...)
So yes, you are not at all off the mark with the British press being Like That, because Velvet Goldmine came out in the late '90s, is set in 1984, and has flashbacks to the '70s, and yet here we are in the present day still seeing that same attitude. Truly astonishing...

Given the recent posts about the many voices and personas of Brian Slade, and why he is not as relatable or beloved as some of the other characters, I found this GQ interview with JRM especially interesting to read.
"All of them [Arthur, Curt and Mandy] have a separate, human side, except Brian Slade because he doesn't exist. He is an imagination. He is their imagination of what a glam rock pop star would have been at that time. So it would be kind of complicated to play because he didn't exist in any sort real form."
And:
"And this is why David Bowie—and David Bowie is an enormous influence in this because he did this for real—David Jones [Bowie's born name] decided when he was a very, very young man to not exist anymore. And he spent his life creating different characters, whether it was Ziggy Stardust, whether it was The Thin White Duke, the Crack Actor, David Bowie. These were all within them very different aspects of a spirit, I suppose that’s a very ethereal sort of way to say it, but he decided to lose the essence of the human that was brought up a child and sort of transform into an image of what you were seeing."
I recommend reading the entire interview, but these two passages seemed particularly relevant. I still find it mind-boggling that JRM has only seen the film once, but I guess I get why. I can hardly imagine what it would have felt like to land such a role at age 19, let alone understanding the effect it might have upon my career. 😱

https://twitter.com/FilmUpdates/status/1694356962375250312 everyone is saying this is proof the movie makes him the villain :/
except nothing in the interview says that, so is it just trolls online extrapolating hatred because it pleases them and that's how they're hoping he'll be portrayed? i fully anticipated that this movie wouldn't use his music - that seems evident even in the teaser - because the whole point is it isn't his story or his voice or about his career, it's about priscilla. and sofia tends to use anachronistic music anyway, but especially following on the heels of baz's film, where its very soul was fueled by the music, it makes sense that they'd probably go in the other direction anyway.
EPE, for better or worse, has made it clear they're not supportive of this and already voiced criticism of its production, but that doesn't necessarily say anything about the content of the film beyond the fact that it wasn't a production they were involved with. i have some issues with a couple of points made in the THR article (not necessarily directly related to E himself), but it ultimately tells us nothing? and anyone who's read priscilla's book will already be prepared for the fact that it's her pov, their relationship was complicated and difficult and never exactly sunshine and roses, which doesn't eliminate the profound love they had for one another either. he wasn't perfect, neither is she, it's possible to be clear eyed and measured about people without vilifying them. additionally, the miniseries with JRM was allowed to use his music by the estate, drew from priscilla's book, and ended up flattening his characterization out to the point where lisa was upset about it, this rodeo has happened many times before.
what annoys me is the way people are acting like elvis has always been uplifted and humanized and portrayed well when the exact opposite is true, he's been treated salaciously or as a humiliating joke or surrounded by misinformation FAR more often than he's been treated as a multifaceted human being, that's the entire reason why last year's movie was touching and remarkable, they were restoring something that's been continually stripped from him. all these weirdos foaming at the mouth and going "omg finally a movie that treats him horribly" are spectacularly missing the point, appear to hate not only elvis but also austin and find his compassion embarrassing?, and i don't care what they have to say. i hope this movie gives them nothing that they want, but we already know what the discourse will be and how they'll tear him apart and victimize priscilla and call her delusional regardless.
tbh this debate about these people's personal life is exhausting? the way he's discussed by bystanders who have no idea what they're talking about is obnoxious because they want commendations of their own self-righteousness with zero awareness of context. 💀 tl;dr i'm happy they didn't use his music - because that's the heart of him, and it's ours.

omg becoming elizabeth truly has nothing going for it. people are sticking around for this poor mans timmy chamalet-esqe robert dudley and the blank wall in a red wig...
So.... yeah. I saw the first three episodes to give it the old college and decided that for many reasons, it wasn't for me. Then the fifth episode dropped and everybody lost their shit so I watched that in order to properly critique it and like... Yeah. The issues I had with the first three episodes plotwise... followed through.
To be clear, I think that even without those issues it's not a great show. It's pretty flat. Tom Cullen, ironically playing the Worst Man, is probably giving the most energetic performance. Otherwise, it's all pretty standard period piece-ing, except you can tell that they don't want it to be. They're really leaning in to the Tudor!Succession vibe, or attempting to, with the musical choices, some of the editing--but the energy of the show is still very staid and standard Tudor fare, but from the boring side versus the soapy side. It's employing a lot of soapy elements, but it Demands to Be Taken Seriously!!!
And it's like... You can't.... Demand to Be Taken Seriously... When your first episode features a dead cut from "the queen is so sad that the king is dead :(" to Catherine Parr's getting it flipped AND reversed by Thomas Seymour, after which he goes "did the king ever make you come like that" in what can only be described in a JRM!H8-esque moment. Like. Pick a lane. Because you don't have the juice to be Taken Seriously and High Soap Drama. A few shows have that juice.... this doesn't.
You definitely can't be taken seriously with this Seymour/Elizabeth plot, which.....
Here's the deal. I think the complaints about the actress looking too old for this part are correct. And it's ridiculous to suggest that they ever would have cast a minor in this role, right--like, the scripts were laid out well in advance, they knew they'd be having Elizabeth have sex (lmao I said I wanted more sex on TV BUT NOT LIKE THIS) and therefore the actress was going to have to be a legal adult. Obviously, I get why you wouldn't want to pick a fresh 18 year old for this kind of work, but like... Tbh, find a super babyfaced 21 year old who can act. How hard is that?
Because... and I'll be blunt here. I don't think Alicia is especially talented. I think she's very dry. I think that she is reeeeeaching with this performance to come off as much younger than she is, and it's causing her to fall into a very contrived and distracting manner of speech that I just can't... take seriously. She's not good enough to justify the fact that she doesn't look remotely close to 13-15. I think there are girls who could have physically taken on the role and easily matched this performance or surpassed it.
What you lose when you have someone who looks all their 28 years playing this role is the horror of it. It's easy for people who aren't dialed into this history to forget how old Elizabeth is. She and Thomas Seymour do not look that far off in age. Tom Cullen is about 8 years older than Alicia; Thomas Seymour was 25 years older than Elizabeth. The impact is significantly dulled by this failure.
But the thing is... No matter what they say in interviews--I think they wanted the impact stifled. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too; to court wokeness by saying that they were shedding a light on the abuse Elizabeth suffered, still a very murkily discussed subject today, while also offering a "sexy soap". I have nothing against sexy soaps; I prefer them. But a man sexually assaulting a child isn't sexy? And shouldn't be portrayed as such?
It is being portrayed as such. In that scene where he molested Elizabeth (fingering her, to put it bluntly) the bosoms are practically heaving. The lighting is dim. It's intimate. He's asking for consent, and she technically gives it (though, like, could she? Actually?). The emphasis is on her pleasure. Regardless of whether or not Thomas Seymour did go even that far with Elizabeth, I feel like it probably wouldn't have been this like... sensual experience. As your first fingerbanging usually isn't when it's NOT AN ASSAULT....
Obviously, I know that the point of grooming is that things don't always feel like an assault immediately to the victim. Many have even "enjoyed" it in the moment, which compounds the trauma often. But this is a TV show. There are ways of depicting a moment that may be ambiguous in an individual's head, while telling the viewer what is happening. And I feel that, especially in this moment in time especially, it's irresponsible to portray the assault of a child as sexy to the audience.
I know that they know how to do it in a less sexy manner because we have the contrasting scene of Elizabeth having sex with (being raped by) Thomas--she "consents", but it's this jerky, awkward, traumatic moment. The light is bright, the sexy whispers are gone, he's just basically humping her while she looks... concerned is what I think they were going for? It's gross. If she was an adult and it wasn't her first time, at minimum you would call it a bad fuck. It's compounded by the fact that she is a child, this is her first time, and this man was literally married to her stepmother. We the audience are basically told that Elizabeth knows something was off, but she also has feelings for him. I don't think the show ever needed to go there with Elizabeth and Seymour having sex--I tend to think it didn't happen, but even aside from that, her being assaulted in the manner we know did happen... Would've been enough. It felt exploitative. But it felt less disgusting than the earlier molestation scene.
Because like--this show is not told from Elizabeth's limited, interior perspective. This is not an intimate character study in which we're in her mind and the ambiguity of the perspective is more heightened. This show gives us multiple perspectives--it's basically an omniscient narrative. You can have a scene focused on Elizabeth, then Mary, then Seymour, and so on and so forth. When the show portrays a scene as "sexy" and moody, that is the show's broad narrative--we are not "in" Elizabeth's mind. (And tbh, that can be done but it's hard to do that onscreen, compared to what you might be able to portray in a book.)
So..... Yeah, I basically think the whole thing is a disaster and completely unnecessary. Tbh? We didn't need this narrative lol. I've been very vocal about my opinion that it's time to give the Tudors a rest and look at other areas of history, especially ones that are not.... focused on white people. But I don't know; I think you need to take an extremely sensitive approach to telling this story, because at the end of the day, it's literally a story of child sexual abuse, and that's the main takeaway. Now isn't the time for "fight for me" dialogue and soapy hooks. Would you ever feel bold enough to take this stance if you were telling the story of a 13 to 15 year old girl in 2021 being groomed by a man in his 30s?
If you'd like to see a show that actually did portray a teen being groomed by an adult as something she saw as romantic (until she didn't) while never leading the audience to believe it was anything but unambiguously evil and wrong--try Cruel Summer. But like, nobody is in Tudor garb, so.
And on a less serious note--yes the Robert Dudley casting is very milquetoast, and yes this is sad because he was a lot of things but he wasn't a milquetoast lol. A poor man's Chalamet is SUCH a good comparison, though? God, what a similar vibe. What are the odds that the real thing goes and plays Robert Dudley in the 2371812th Tudor production five years from now? Good God.

Million Dollar question: in 'Darkest Before the Dawn', what did Henry whisper into Norwich's ear at the end of one of the chapters that makes his face go pale?
I honestly don’t know! (Neither Henry nor Norwich told me ;)) I can say that I know exactly how I visualised it as a TV show scene in my head - we never actually see Henry’s face in the entire scene and also his voice is really even and cold. Which makes it scarier.
(My theory was that it was something that gave away just what kind of relationship Henry had with Thomas and how much Norwich had miscalculated though - I feel like in the OT3 universe there’s an interview with JRM and Rupert and the interviewer asks about what Henry said and they are both like ‘…mystery ;)’ Also I cannot decide whether historically there’s evidence of a meeting or the show is just like ‘we fictionalised this’)

I’m currently thinking about The Tudors OT3 universe Tudors interview with Sarah Bolger and the kids playing her siblings + JRM, MDK, Nat Dormer and James Frain because it’s adorable.
This is so cute!!! Now I’m thinking about Elizabeth, Tommy, and George’s actors running around and the interviewers/other adults trying to coral them in!

Abstract
A survey on adoption levels of the existing soil nitrogen replenishing technologies amongst farmers in three counties in western Kenya was carried out in June 2011. Three farmer associations were Angurai Farmers Development Project (AFDEP), Bungoma Small-Scale Farmers Forum (BUSSFFO) and Mwangaza Farmer Group (MFAGRO). During the survey 223 farmers were interviewed with roughly a half of the households surveyed being members of farmer associations (FAs) and the other half being non-members, who acted as the control. Stratified random sampling technique was used. A repeated measures Analysis of Variance (RM – ANOVA) showed that various soil nitrogen replenishment technologies were adopted to various degrees, F (4.39, 855.43) =23.36, p<.001). The findings of this study indicated that the available technologies most extensively used in the study area were the use of inorganic fertilisers (DAP), planting of improved legumes processing, Lab lab, Push Pull, and Super 2 Package. In second place, were technologies such as seed inoculation, foliar feed use, top dressing fertiliser (CAN) and use of improved legumes. The least used technologies were found to be Ua Kayongo (IR seed), MBILI intercropping, fortified compost, and use of Farm yard manure and liming. The results also indicated that generally, adoption of technologies was higher amongst farmer association members compared with non-members regardless of the county. Bungoma County had significantly highest level of technology adoption level compared to both Busia and Vihiga. Adoption of soil technologies was also found to be positively correlated with farmers’ educational level but inversely related with their age.

SP Naga commends Mr. Typhoon for accurate weather update feed
#PHinfo: SP Naga commends Mr. Typhoon for accurate weather update feed
NAGA CITY, Nov. 11 (PIA) – Dubbed as the “Maverick Meteorologist” and a “One Man Weather Center,” David Michael “Mike” V. Padua, a.k.a Mr. Typhoon received another accolade from the City Government of Naga, “in appreciation and profound gratitude of his invaluable service to the people of Naga, Bicolanos and the whole nation as a whole with his most accurate reporting of weather updates in the recent Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni) on Nov. 1.
Typhoon Specialist David Michael ‘Mike’ Padua aka “Mr. Typhoon” (5th from right) pose with Mayor Nelson Legaction (4th from right), Vice Mayor Cecilia “Nene” de Asis (6th from right) and members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod during the conferment of the Plaque of Commendation to Padua for his most accurate reporting of weather updates on the recent super typhoon Rolly on Nov. 1, 2020, given on Nov. 9, 2020 during the flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall Grounds, Naga City.   (JRM-PIAV/Camarines Sur)
In a joint and collective motion, Naga’s Sangguniang Panlunsod members passed Resolution No. 2020-366 dated Nov. 3, citing among others, Padua’s contribution in informing his followers of Super Typhoon’s Rolly’s track thru his regular and clear weather reporting delivered via various social media platforms and radio interviews.
Padua regularly posts his updates thru his Mrtyphoon.tv site, which can also be accessed via YouTube.
Armed with his laptop and knowledge, he made himself available 24/7 prior and during the onslaught of STS Rolly, and allowed phone-patched interviews in various local radio stations in the province, allowing his listeners to keep an accurate track of the typhoon, including the almost precise time of its landfall and its location.
This, according to the said resolution, “alerted the Nagueños and Bicolanos of the danger of the impending typhoon and kept track of it while it developed and gathered strength while approaching the Bicol Region.
In his Facebook post, City Mayor Nelson Legacion said that the recognition bestowed on Padua is in recognition of his significant role in giving updated information regarding any upcoming weather disturbance and how it helped in the preparation not just of the LGUs but also of residents living in vulnerable areas.
The resolution further stated that the precise information provided by Padua in his feeds enabled the city government to “take necessary precautions including facilitating executions of evacuation plans thereby preventing difficult rescue operations and minimize potential casualties considering the severity of the super typhoon.”
The august body also acknowledged that Padua’s advisories alongside that of the government’s weather bureau – PAGASA, has “become the reliable guide of the Naga City’s government action in responding to the needs of the situation making him an indispensable partner of the city in ensuring the safety of every Nagueño.”
Padua is also a recipient of various awards in the past.
He received the People’s Choice Award during the 2000 Philippine Web Awards, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Philippine Coast Guard for his assistance during Typhoons Unding and Yoyong dated December 20, 2004; Institutional Commendation from the Naga College Foundation for exemplary service to the NCF community dated January 2005.
In June 17, 2005, he was a recipient of Naga City Special Mayoral Award for his deep sense of civic duty and expertise in storm tracking and weather analysis and various and international recognition including the prestigious people’s choice award; citation for Heroism for services dated Dec 19, 2006 for rendering above and beyond the call of duty resulting in the deliverance of countless lives at the height of destruction wrought by Super Typhoon Reming that slammed the region on Nov 30, 2006.
He was also an ABS-CBN/Gawad Geny Lopez, Jr. Bayaning Pilipino 2010 Finalist Region V - Individual Category dated Aug 26, 2010, for continuing to set aside personal interest or gain for the benefit of his respective community, imbued with a tireless pursuit for excellence in his endeavors, and dedicating his life in service of the poor.
Padua also received Ateneo De Naga University’s “Bulawang Bikolnon Service to Bikol Award” given during the 61st Commencement Exerciseson March 26, 2011, among others.  (LSMacatangay,PIAV/Camarines Sur)
