Famous JozenMizunogotoshi, red bottle, Hiyoroshi
Today, too, I am drinking alone in the dust. I drank Jozen MIzuno gotosi the year before last, when I had just started this blog and before I had a mold. A year later, I got my sake tasting license (I still don’t know how good I am at it) and found this red bottle again. I bought it to see if I could confirm the level of improvement with my tongue, which has been drinking a lot more sake than…

each week i tune into shogun in order to see toranaga do the political equivalent of sticking out his leg and making eye contact with yabushige while yabushige trips over him

I thought Toronaga's son was so cute. Poor baby. He was dorky but I think that just endeared me more smh. Also just waiting for the anjin to get his ship back and as he's sailing away say "this a fucked up country" haha
Nagakato was really endearing, which was what made his ending so tragic. He wants to be like his father — who won battle after battle, succeeding in crafting his own myth — and he wants his father to approve of him and entrust him with his larger plans for war with the regents. The problem is that Toranaga doesn't trust anyone — having your father trade you to another warlord at age six will do that — and in order to win his approval, Nagakato takes direct (and impulsive) action (killing Jozen, attacking his uncle at the tea house), which backfires. I would say this was a tragedy of high parental expectations, except that Toranaga basically expects him to sit back and be quiet, a state of (perceived) passivity that Nagakato can't handle being in. (It also makes sense that, in the absence of his father's admiration, he would seek out companionship and direction from men of his own generation, like Omi. There's also a moment in the last episode where he tries to connect with Fuji; it's actually very sweet, making me think the show was trying to foreshadow a possible romance between them. Hmmm, guess not.) But what makes Nagakato ultimately so tragic is that like all young men who have never actually seen a war, he only thinks of it as honorable and glorious. And ultimately his desire to impress his father (by eliminating Saeki, his father's most immediate enemy) leads to one of the most bleak and meaningless deaths the show has given us so far.
Will the Anjin ever get his ship back? At this point, it's almost like the ship is one of those mouse on a string cat toys and Toranaga keeps pulling it away just when Blackthorne thinks he's close. But I also feel kind of bad for Blackthorne — how was he to know he was sailing right into a civil war and would end up firmly (and dangerously) on one side of it? At this point, though, yeah, I imagine he would like to just sail away and get back home where there aren't any earthquakes or ritual suicides and where he can eat his food with his hands as God intended.

*Shōgun episode 7 spoilers*
Lots of Nagakado hate in the Shōgun fandom as if he wasn't acting like everyone would have in that situation. He has asked repeatedly for Toranaga to trust him as his son, and if Toranaga had done so, he would have made better decisions. If Toranaga had shown just the slightest bit of faith in his son and told him about his plans, he wouldn't have killed Jozen. If Toranaga had listened to the people around him and not resigned everyone around him to a horrible fate, Nagakado would not have taken action against Saeki and died. Toranaga was legit a bad father to him, never showing him any affection or affirming anything about him.
Don't get me wrong, I love Toranaga. But he's just not a good father and we see that reflected in Nagakado's actions. He tried to teach him about being laying in wait like a falcon, but how can a young person do that when their dad is constantly expecting the best and never giving them any sort of emotional guidance? And Toranaga surrendering is the dumbest move, of course Nagakado is going to try to fight for his life, for the life of everyone around him. He failed spectacularly but at least he wasn't twiddling his thumbs waiting to be taken to Osaka where he would have been forced to commit seppuku.
All he wanted was a meaningful death and he couldn't even get that. It's sad, man.

It’s another week with another spectacular episode of Shōgun on FX/Hulu/Disney+. I truly hope that everyone else watching this show is loving it as much as I am.
Just to taunt me after I talked last week about how gruesome the bodies being ripped apart by cannon fire was, this episode opened with old men loading the mutilated bodies onto carts. Just gross.
The biggest shocker of this episode, at the beginning, was that Buntaro had survived with the aid of some ronin. He ended up moving in with his wife Mariko, John Blackthorne, and Fuji.
It wasn’t until watching the full episode did I grasp that Toranaga stripping his son of leader of the cannon legion wasn’t only a punishment. Sure, he felt his son disrespected him by executing Jozen and his men (and sending Jozen’s head to Ishido in Okasaka), but he also knew he could drive a wedge through Yabushige and his nephew by gifting the command to Omi. Politics!
I had hopes that we would be getting a bonding moment from Buntaro and Blackthorne as they got drunk together on sake, but it wasn’t to be. Watching Buntaro be abusive (physically, mentally, and emotionally) to Mariko was hard to endure.
I don’t even know how she’s going to contribute to this story going forward, but I was terrified of Lady Ochiba after she told Ishido that the Council of Regents would now listen to her. She holds great gravitas to her words.
It’s another week in the books of Shōgun, and we’re now halfway through the series. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
