I've been on low-dose T (50mg every 2 weeks) for 26 weeks. I've recently had a sore throat and feel like my voice drop has started.

Good news: I'm starting to get used to singing along to Josh Turner.

Bad news: I'm having a harder time singing along to higher songs that I used to sing easily, like I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack.

I'm both sad and happy at the same time. I loved singing as a soprano, but I've always wanted to sing low too. I'll take whatever voice I get, but I am going to train more so hopefully I don't completely lose my higher notes.

That Long Black Train

This was written with inspiration from Josh Turner's Long Black Train. As a warning, I did write this to be sad. I would have done this for @flashfictionfridayofficial (#FFF183 Late Night Train) but I took too long writing it. I hope you enjoy it.

The wind blew restlessly against the trees that night as you sat on the old splintered bench. You can feel the guilt and sin crawl down your spine as you pick up the train ticket once more. No amount of cold weather could deafen the disgrace you feel. In the back of your mind, you can hear your family and friends beg you to stay with them. Your brother tried to stop you when he found the train ticket. Aside from their efforts, there was nothing that would stop you from leaving. It was inevitable. As you look around, you find you are the only one waiting. The wind painfully whistled into your ears, forcing you to cover your temples. 

As you waited hours after you arrived, you began to see the flickering pictures of your past life. Playing games on family night, pretending to be a monster to scare your siblings on hallows eve, singing terrible songs with your uncle, and comforting your younger sister in the darkest of nights. The wind seemed to moan in sorrow and pain as the sun disappeared over the horizon. You dig through your pack and grab out the written note you never read. It was thoroughly crinkled from time and abuse. You unfold the aged paper and read through the smears of graphite:

“Dear friend, it pains us to see you suffer after our many years of friendship. I still remember, as well as the others, the fun we had together watching movies and hanging out at our favorite diner. Seeing you in the hospital, we’re scared we might not ever be able to do those things with you again. Please hang in there, one of us still owes you that fifty from that bet you made. At least get better so he can pay you.” -Sign, the idiot threesome (We need the whole quartet, come on, please get better)

You chuckle as you read the last few bits before looking at the dark and cloudy sky in grief. It pains you to leave so soon in life. You remember the one who gave you the train ticket. They gave it to you whilst you were in your hospital bed, suffering from a cancerous tumor. Five minutes before midnight, you can hear the whistle cry into the wind. It felt as if it were calling your name. You can hear the crying and mourning in the back of your head. You wish you could have stayed, but you couldn’t stand the pain. It was too much. You had given up. Time seemed to stop as the train pulled into the station. The long black train hissed out a sorrowful sigh as it came to a slow stop.

You trembled as you got up from the bench. No passengers walked out of the polished cars. It was now your time to go. Every muscle in your body began to lock up with every step toward the train. You knew who was waiting for you. As you step onto the train, you turn your face to the tall figure in a black-flowing cloak.

“It is time to go,” his voice croaked softly as he reached out to you with his long boney fingers. You nod and tentatively take his hand. The car you entered was finely kept, decorated with gold, and devoid of any other people. You took your seat in the nearest seat you could get to. As you look out the window, you find the train has already taken you away from home, silently chugging away. The man in the cloak had disappeared, leaving you by yourself. You look at the train ticket and find a word already hole-punched into it. “Sorry.”

Tears slowly built up in your eyes as your life flashed before you. “I’m sorry for leaving you so soon, for I still love you.”
