I was having a little think about Kenjaku's relationship with Mahito and I think I may have hit upon something...

We know Kenny hijacked Suguru's body shortly after Suguru's death on the Jujutsu Tech campus. Whatever Satoru did with his body after that is left ambiguous but we know it wasn't disposed of in the standard fashion (cremated) so Kenjaku was able to get access to it. Unless someone tried to find what was left of the arm Suguru lost in his fight with Yuta & Rika and patch it back onto him before he was left somewhere (let's assume buried or stacked in a cairn in the woods somewhere, left otherwise intact and relatively accessible), Kenny would have taken control of a body with a missing limb.

Following this, "Suguru Geto" returns to his congregation of curse users, bloody but unbowed, minus one arm and probably nursing an understandable grudge over his loss on the campus. It's roughly a year before the Shibuya plan is put into motion but Kenjaku has been planning for ages, and most of the pieces are already in place. He just wants a few more good cards in hand before he sets things in motion. I like to think actual Suguru knew of Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon, though he may not have encountered them directly or didn't know quite what to do with them yet. Given his status and technique, it's hard to imagine he wasn't aware of them unless they kept themselves well hidden until the year Kenjaku presumably approached them with a plan. The Mountain, Forest, and Ocean curses were good allies and good fuel for Kenjaku's borrowed technique, and he easily sold them on a modified version of Suguru's "annihilate all humans" plan.

The unexpected bonus was Mahito, who came into being during that interim year. The Humanoid curse was young but cunning, and came with a very unexpected power. By manipulating the soul of a living being, Mahito could freely alter its physiology. Naturally an easy test of this utility would have been talking Mahito into growing the missing arm back on Kenny's borrowed body, which I'm sure Mahito was more than happy to do to prove himself to his new powerful allies.

Now this is where things get interesting. Because Kenny's vessel is Suguru Geto's body, did Mahito manipulate Suguru Geto's soul to grow that arm back? My guess is yes, because of a brief little instance during the Shibuya incident where Kenjaku loses control of his vessel. When he reveals himself to taunt Satoru Gojo, which arm snaps up to to try choke him? The right one. Probably Suguru's dominant hand, sure, but also the one he lost in his fight with Yuta & Rika. The one Mahito had to grow back by tapping into that body's soul.

Now I'm not saying the whole of what remains of the real Suguru is stashed away in that arm. But I am saying that when Mahito touched the real Suguru's soul with his technique and got it moving, he woke it up a bit, just enough for it to know it was still there. I know a common interpretation of this little event is that protecting Satoru was as natural as muscle-memory for Suguru, and the motion was basically automatic. But what if when Satoru spoke to Kenjaku in Shibuya, Suguru's soul was the part that was awake enough to listen, to try to resist, to prove it was still in there.

So for all you wonderful fix-it fic writers, there's a new angle for you if you hadn't considered it. From speaking with Nanami and Yuji, Satoru must be aware of what Mahito is capable of. Perhaps Mahito's technique could be the key to recovering the real Suguru from within that stolen body...

When I started my jjk bad trip, I didn't really like Gojo as a character. Or it's more likely I couldn't empathize him, worry about his life during fights, it was pretty difficult to resonate with him. For my personal perception he was kind of a more comely version of god almighty. How could I feel sorry for god almighty?! In no way. I praised Gojo for his principles regarding the higher-ups and traditions, and especially i adored the fact that with such a power he didn’t obtain god complex (or he did...) and started a lovely rampage; as well as i was insulting him for some things too, like taking Itadori to the battle with Jogo, for superficial teaching and levity (you know, I'm very a nanami type person).

And finally it was the moment of the Shibuya arc... All my disinterest, indifference and irritation towards Satoru Gojo broke just like my heart did. He experienced such a full range of various emotions (from the usual arrogance of a winner to, um, arrogant humility of a loser, fuck, yeah, this is Satoru Gojo) that i couldn't help but shake with terror for his destiny. I bow low to Gege who masterfully expressed the whole colorful emotional spectrum on Gojo's face. The situation literally forced him to look like an ordinary (almost) human being in dangerous circumstances. I cried, I got angry, I was freaking out. Thank you, Akutami Gege, for making me love the character you planned to seal for indeterminate time 😘

P.S. I like this moment from "The Gunslinger", Stephen King, which perfectly describes Gojo.

Getou never understood the appeal that the designer drugs Gojo uses has to him.

Gojo insists it's simply a party habit, but when he sees is friend snort another line off the another nameless set of plush tits, icy blue irises framed by bloodshot sclera as he spreads his lips into a Cheshire grin, getou decides to let his friend live in his delusion a little longer.

Getou understands him when he’s faced with the same pressures Gojo keeps brushing off.

The way the family keeps brushing off the way the ransom on his cousin went south, all the efforts now turned into making him the heir of the company. the chiding from his mother to cut his hair shorter for the pictures, the urges from his father to stand taller and prouder he needs to pose for the magazines.

Getou retaliates to the drive to rise above the masses by sinking.

Blowing off his friends to hang out with the losers he found at the seedy dive bar down the street from the office. He sits in a cloudy gaze of cigarette smoke, drinking whiskey cheaper than the buttons on the shirt as he watches Mahito and Jogo heckle the bartender for free drinks. and then Mahito dangles a roll thicker than a cigarette, twisted at the end to give it a cone appearance.

“Fuck it,” Getou thinks, thick fingertips brushing past Mahito’s slender ones to take the blunt from his finger tips, whipping the lighter he stole from his dad to light the blunt, his large chest rising as he takes a deep inhale.

That one breath is just the beginning, and Getou’s showing up half lidded to stockholder meetings, and spaced out with his dates to you, the girl he’s been set up with since he was sixteen. It was a marriage of convenience but you two found love along the way, but now, its like you never even knew him.

Gojo is no help, of course, he’s just glad his best friend has loosened up, so that leaves you to try and pick up the pieces.

But its too much, he’s a shell of the man you once knew, and it's too much to watch him interrupt you mid conversation to spark a joint, despite how sexy the bob of his Adam's apple is when he exhales. to hear the distant “hmm?” at family dinners when your parents ask about when the wedding is. conversations are about philosophies you never knew he had, and he’s just rambling on, not even caring if you get him.

Your breaking point is when you feel his hands leave your ass, the grip that was driving you to press your pelvis against his abruptly interrupted. Your hips stutter, confused as to why he would stop in the middle like this, until you hear the familiar click of his lighter followed by the shattering of your heart against your ribs.

There's another half hearted thrust into you, the heat of the joint warming the skin of your left hip as getou tries to resume the pace. you smack his hands away, the butt burning your palm as you try to clamber away from him.

But even in his haze, getou knows he loves you, and he can't lose you — you’re the last tether he has. So in his fog, he reaches out for you, strong arm wrapping around your waist to you to his chest, nuzzling into you so he can kiss away the salty tears on your cheeks.

His free hand grips your cheek, turning you towards him so he can see your glassy eyes and wet eyelashes. He's hurt you too, and he can’t bear to live apart any longer. So he takes one more drag, and you can feel his ribcage expand against your back as he fills his lungs. A thumb runs over your swollen lips, parting them so he can press his against yours, pushing the smoke into your mouth with soft circles rubbed on your cheek, so you can take this one breath, together again, and he can drag you right down with him.

Guys... I am so unsettled. 

I don’t know how to explain this feeling of impending doom that I have about Megumi’s character growth during the Culling Game.

Especially with Sukuna being so fixated on Megumi and Yuji’s words “as long as I’m around you will suffer”.

It’s not that Megumi is becoming “evil” per say, but rather that he might be someone who could loose his humanity, his kindness.

If you haven’t already, I recommend you read this analysis on Sukuna’s plan for Megumi on reddit by someone who has made very similar assumptions about Megumi. Like me, the user also noticed the subtle mirroring between Sukuna and Megumi--their DE and some of the symbolism used.

TLDR? “I believe the evidence we have so far points to Sukuna likely wanting Megumi to become some kind of student of his similar to what Uraume is”.

While I’m not entirely behind the “student x teacher” dynamic, I do agree there’s something to it and it reminds of me Orochimaru taking Sasuke “under his wing”. With Gege as the writer masterminding the story, however, I am expecting a much more refreshing re-telling of the trope.

More than “mentor x mentee” I see Sukuna as someone who eggs Megumi onto a growth path that suits Sukuna’s self-interest.

This theory, in retrospect and with chapter 158 out, really reinforces my perspective that Megumi is a morally gray character. Its like we've been given hints but Gege is starting to be more in your face about the fact that Megumi's sense of justice is kind of "shady" (pun intended) and self-serving.

Sort of the way Sukuna’s actions are all self-serving...

Again, the way I see it, even though Megumi seems to believe the world revolves around "don't kill me and I won't kill you", it never occurred to me that Megumi would be willing to kill others until Megumi straight up says "with this new rule we might not have to kill anyone". 

Meaning... he was considering killing others was a necessary "evil" but was hoping it wouldn't get to that.

But... What happens if he's desperate enough for points? 

His dogeza bow when asking Kirara for help tells us he IS desperate. 

If he fails with his plan to force other users to add new rules, and we know Gege is not afraid to make his characters fail, is Megumi going to go on a killing rampage so that he can add the two rules he’s proposing? 

Maybe? Maybe not. Only Gege knows.

Maybe nothing happens and we all live happily ever after! Said no JJK fan ever.........

There’s a part of me that wants to be wrong. That this feeling of impending doom is just in my imagination. That’s how I realized just how emotionally involved I am with Megumi’s growth arc.

So I am very curious how Sukuna is going to use this in his favor.

Again, let's not forget Yuji seems to believe that as long as he's around Megumi will suffer.

I’ve shared before that I feel like Sukuna sees a younger version of himself in Megumi. But this assumption hinges on understanding Sukuna, what we know about him, and what his true intentions are. 

So far we know that Sukuna was a human who became a cursed spirit, which leaves a lot of room for interpretation and begs the question “where you had cursed spirits trying to become the new humans--Jogo et al, you also have Sukuna doing the opposite... so how exactly did Sukuna loose his humanity?”.

So maybe that’s my next big character breakdown... Stay tuned.

Here's a Uraume theory for you all

Beware spoilers ahead.

Ok if you haven't read the manga and read past the Shibuya arc then this will spoil you or just confuse you even more

Let's get started.

Uraume we know very little about. Their first appearance was after Sukuna defeated Jogo. We know so little about them that their gender is still a mystery and according to the fan page of jjk Wikipedia (and apparently someone also said Gege senpai said it in an interview ) that they are a good cook and cook for sukuna. Cause you know he's terrible at that stuff.

So what we know is this:

🔷They are a servent of Sukuna

🔷Obviously preparing something for Sukunas revival.

🔷They are currently working with Kenjaku.

Because they have only appeared in a few pieces here and there in the manga we know very little about them.

🔷They have earned Sukunas respect

🔷their curse technique is ice

Now get ready because we are about to dive into the crazy part of the theory.

Some people theorize that Uraume is Sukunas lover but we don't even know if Uraume is even a male or female at this point. Also sukuna having lover seems unlikely to his nature.

If Kenjaku really involved sukuna in whatever he's truly plotting then I think he would have tried to stop Mahito from trying to kill Itadori and Sukuna, like Jogo did when he told Mahito that he was in the wrong earlier in the Shibuya arc. Kenjaku didn't stop Mahito so either Kenjaku knew that Mahito would lose or he just doesn't consider sukuna a primary objective. Which leads into another theory of mine about Kenjakus true plans with the culling game.

Whether lover or friends, it's obvious that Uruame is close to sukuna. Which begs to question why is Uruame is working with Kenjaku and does this mean that Kenjaku is helping to revive the king of curses??

Kenjakus plan/s does not seem to focus on Sukuna entirely. After the first meeting with the special curses where "Geto" and Jogo discuss plans, "Geto" mentions getting both itadori and Sukuna to side with them. However it seemed to me that it isn't Kenjakus primary objective to get Sukuna on their side.

The idea was if they could force Itadori to make a contract with Sukuna so the later could have full control, then they assumed Sukuna would join their cause. To literally destroy humanity because these curses believe they are the true version of humanity.

The only issue was Sukuna already made a contract with Itadori and also Sukuna doesn't seem all that happy when Mahito is introduced to him. Thus causing a rivalry.

So...

But what if Uruame is waiting for Kenjaku to make a final move or unveil his plot further and backstab kenjaku and use whatever it is that he was after to finish sukunas full revival.

Now back to Uruame.

This is where Uraume comes into play. They are a sorcerer with good ice skills so someone Kenjaku can use right?

(also the whole fire and ice thing people have mentioned about with Sukuna and Uraume is wholesome to say they balance each other out)

They also have to be the same age or close to the same age as Sukuna since they knew him from the golden age of jujutsu. So we have to question how on earth a human can survive that long. Kenjaku we understand as they jump from body to body(to the point I'd call him more curse then human at this point), so does Uruames curse technique somehow make them semi immortal? Or are they too become a curse? Maybe to server loyalty to Sukuna?

And not to forget to mention that means all three were former/are sorcerer's from the golden age and we can assume they were either friends or knew of each other during that point of time. Maybe Kenjaku is the reason Sukuna became the king of curses?

I guess that's up to Gege senpai to explain

I mean maybe Sukuna is wanting to get his hands on a souless curse womb death painting to use and take over as another vessel from Kenjaku 🤣

Cause something tells me that after sukuna made it clear even with all his fingers devoured he may still be unable to take over itadoria's body and now knowing that Kenjaku had something to do with Yujis father you have to question if he meddled with Yuji..or is his actual biological parent since it's still unclear if Kaori is Yujis mother or another body snatched up by Kenjaku.

Either way if that is the case then Uruames plot is to seperate the two from each other and give sukuna a new body or something along those lines. Which may also be where Megumi comes into play with his shinigami.

Ok but jokes aside until we find out more information about Uruame it's all just speculation.

I'm not convinced they are lovers but they are close enough to call servant and master in this situation.

So until then. Take this as you wish and let the theories and ideas go crazy

Maybe something platonic between them?

We could also theorize that Uruame plans to backstab Sukuna but I highly doubt that since they appear to be very loyal to Sukuna. But this is Gege senpai we are also talking about who loves to through plot twists our way.

I'd love to learn more about Uruame and at present I think they will be a character that's kind of there and in the background but has a far bigger role to play.

Hopefully Gege senpai will have them show up more often.

Gojo and Mahito

Nanami and Gojo share several parallels as pointed out by Nanami in Chapter 22 of Jujutsu Kaisen. A connection between the two of them that’s developed to the point where we see Mahito steal a technique from Gojo (domain expansion activation for only a few microseconds) in the latest chapter. More on the parallels of Gojo and Mahito, because for both of them there’s more than meets the eye. 

1. Children with Too Much Power

Mahito parallels Gojo, but more specifically I believe he has the most in common with teenage Gojo we see in Hidden inventory. Especially on two key points. Both of them had immense strength that they hadn’t quite figured out yet.

Teenage Gojo, who was still figuring out the infinity and could not yet quite make the universe bend at the snap of his finger tips. In his introductory arc when Mahito was fighting Nanami, he was like a child figuring out how to use his body for the first time. 

Everything he does in that arc is out of a childish sense of curiosity. He gets to close to Junpei, to observe what will happen from prolonged interaction with a human. He toys around a long time with fighting Nanami because he’s still figuring out how his curse technique works. 

Unlike the other curses who seem to already exist knowing what they are, or have existed for years already long enough to figure themselves out, Mahito is actively learning about himself when he fights Nanami. 

Just like Gojo, being pushed to the brink of death by an incredibly powerful enemy, only seems to make Mahito bounce back stronger. Mahito and Gojo parallel each other in their comparison to Nanami. Simply put, Nanami is the most mature character in the series, he’s the role model for a normal, decent adult. 

While Gojo will drag children to battlefields, or take big bets with their lives, Nanami acts much more responsibility, with respect to the fact that Yuji is a child whose emotional well being he’s nurturing. 

Nanami is introduced to us as the opposite of Gojo, someone mature while Gojo is immature. He even says that he doesn’t respect him in the least bit. Gojo’s powerful, but he’s not grown up. Nanami even explains this quite logically, people don’t grow up by fighting bad guys, or getting stronger. People grow up by accumulating experiences. 

Gojo and Mahito are all powerful in ways that Nanami will never be, while at the same time they act like children. Especially teenage Gojo, but even adult Gojo doesn’t really like to get along well with other people, and decides everything based on his own emtoions and perspective. In other words both Gojo and Mahito have a tendency to be egocentric. 

Egocentric. 

thinking only of oneself, without regard for the feelings or desires of others; self-centered. 

2. The World Through Their Eyes

Mahito and Gojo are characters who appear childish and frivolous on the surface, but if you plunge their depths they have a deeper understanding of themselves and their desires than most ofther characters in the series. They might not get other people, but that’s not their priority either. In classic Jungian symbolism, shallow water belies greater depths. 

Gojo and Mahito are both extremely well thought characters, capable of immense amounts of self reflection. (Probably too much self reflection in Gojo’s case, he just loves looking at himself in the mirror a little too much how vain.) It not only shows in how much of themselves they have figured out but also their jujutsu. I think it’s safe to say that there is some resemblance between the infinity, and Mahito’s idle transifguration. Their Jujutsu makes them both privvy to the world that no one else can see. It’s unknown what Gojo can see with the six eyes exactly, but considering the limitless. 

You can infer that he’s capable of seeing much greater sensory perception than the normal person. Mahito doesn’t have the six eyes, but because his jujutsu is about altering the form of the soul, he has the unique ability to see the shape of the soul inside of the body.

Mahito can see through people’s bodies, and see down to their souls. However, his perceptiveness has caused him to give up on the idea that people have any individuality at all, that they have “hearts” you know like, thoughts and feelings and stuff. Which is why all humans are pretty much interchangable to him. Mahito can’t see life separate as him from having any particular value. 

Both of their cursed techniques create distance between themselves and others. Though in opposite ways. Gojo’s cursed technique is based around the idea that nothing can reach him, because it will always slow down in the infinite space between them. Mahito is able to completely change the shape of whatever he wants with one touch. 

However, at the same time this resembles how they both interact with other people. Mahito sees people as nothing more than toys to play with and experiment in developing his jujutsu technique on. He even is literally pictured in an official color illustration as destroying Junpei, Nobara, and Nanami as torn up dolls. They were just toys that he got bored with and threw away. 

Gojo can sometimes even share this tendency, not to mercilessly kill and slaughter of course not, but to be so far away from other people, and too busy perceiving the infinity that he can’t get caught up in ordinary lives. Remember, Mahito, Jogo and Hanami’s plan was to shake up Gojo with the sheer amount of people he would have to save in Shibuya, and it just... didn’t work. 

Gojo just isn’t that shaken up by the people he can’t save. He’s not Geto. He’s not Yuji. Of course he cares enough to try and minimize the damage, he could have just used unlimited domain to end the situation at the cost of everybody gathered, but he made a decision to try to balance between everybody’s lives, protecting his own, and exorcising the curses. 

Mahito and Gojo are both extremely distant from other people, but because of that they have a unique understanding of themlseves. Mahito’s domain expansion is called “Self Embodiment of Perfection.” When Gojo figures out reverse Jutsushiki he quotes the budha when he reached enlightenment. 

They are extremely isolated characters who have others plumbed the depths of themselves. Gojo’s goal is to be the best version of himself he can be, to push himself into being the strongest. Their individual will is so strong they want to impose it on the world around them. Gojo wants to reset the jujutsu world, Mahito wants a world of curses. 

They both encourage the other people around them to also think deeper about themselves, and how to evaluate themselves. Gojo tells Mahito to stop repressing himself for the sake of others. To try to be stronger individually instead of more of a team player. Instead of judging those around you, look inwardly. 

Mahito is furious that Yuji doesn’t evaluate himself, doesn’t think deeply about his own motivations. That’s what he criticizes Yuji for constantly, he doesn’t think for himself, he runs blindly into fights. Mahito calls their fight a clash of truth. Yuji has to know his own self, and know his belifs and know why his beliefs are better than Mahito’s if he wants to face him. 

Mahito and Gojo are both always looking inside of themselves, and that’s why their depths go much further than their seemingly shallow surface. If I were to make one last comparison between the two of them, I would say that the reason Mahito imitates Gojo is because his end goal is to become enlightened. What Mahito wants, is to be true to his nature, the truest embodiment of a curse in the series. He wants to reach an enlightenment like Gojo has where he has himself, his role in the world, completely and totally figured out. Where he embodies his own idealized sense of perfection. 

Which is why he imitates Gojo, the strongest. Though his is the opposite path, like a reflection of a mirror. If Gojo uses his power to be the model, the embodiment of a jujutsu sorcerer who exorcises curses to save human lives, then Mahito chooses to be the embodiment of a curse that plagues humans.

Mahito and Gojo both see through things, they can see what everybody else can’t, however they differ in how they use those perceptions. Gojo tethers himself to responsibility to other people, because he finds meaning in doing that, he thinks there’s a point in protecting and nurturing the weak because eventually he’ll be able to find strong comrades. Mahito however, believes in the opposite of camraderie. He can see through other people, so he acts like they’re not even there. Gojo is a character who while his tendency is to try do everything on his own, is currently waiting rescue from the strong comrades he focused so hard into training. While Mahito will most likely end up alone. 

My Opinions On Jujutsu Kaisen That Literally Nobody Asked For

I finished binging the Jujutsu Kaisen manga in 48 hours. I am having some expresso, because I’m depresso.

Ugh, NANAMIN 👏 WHAT 👏 A 👏 MAN 😭 😭 😭 😭 I became a certified Nanami stan once I saw the tired business man aesthetic (plus, his words about how work is shit? Truer words have never been spoken), and his little speech about adults and responsibility, how children no matter their circumstances are still children, and should be given the opportunity to act as such. Anyways, I love how the Jujutsu Kaisen manga shows that adults can handle things, and that is A-OKAY!!! If Jujutsu Tech follows the Japanese school system, Yuji is a first year in high school, so he’s probably 15 or 16 years old, way too early to go through Shibuya level of trauma (though, I think anybody is too young to have to go through what happened to Yuji in Shibuya). 

Children should have the privilege to be children. That doesn’t mean coddling, it means that children should have plenty of time to experience new things, enjoy being a child, and I’m so happy Nanami says this! 

In conclusion, Nanami deserves happiness and a vacation to Kuantan 🥺

YOSHINO JUNPEI!!! He and his mom deserve happiness, they’re both precious beans. I didn’t even realize Junpei was dead until 5+ chapters later. But it was too late, for I had already gotten attached!!! *cue curse worthy screeching* 

I was so excited for Junpei to join Jujutsu Tech, too! I had this whole headcanon of Junpei being HAPPY again, talking about movies with Yuji, interacting with the other first years, him seeing Panda for the first time!!! The thing was, back then, it wasn’t headcanon! I thought it was going to be facts, until Gege said ‘lol, you thought, peasant’, before spitting on any hope of mine for a happy Junpei.

(On a completely different tangent, I would be SO psyched if I got to meet a talking panda, we could act out all of “Kung Fu Panda” together, especially the chopstick scene, and maybe we could go to a zoo, just to mess with the zookeepers about a honest to god PANDA walking on its hind legs around the zoo)

‘If Junpei had lived’ is a phrase I think about a lot, and I think that is why the “Young Fish and Reverse Punishment” arc  was so crucial to the story and yet so tragic. 

Junpei has so much potential to be happy, and then he didn’t get the happiness he deserves. It really sets the tone, the high stakes to the whole manga, for we see the amount of damage a curse inflicts on somebody who could be in a situation like Junpei. 

As the readers, we understand the reasoning behind Junpei’s ideology, sympathizing with him as we see what horrible torment he has to go through. That very first scene of this arc, where the bullies made him eat the cockroach and BURNED HIM WITH A LIT CIGARETTE, and the teacher who saw all of this happening, JUST TURNS AWAY!!! It was haunting. But finally, finally, we get a light at the tunnel for Junpei in the form of our lord and saviour, the cinnamon roll of cinnamon rolls, Itadori Yuji. HERE is a person who is able to connect with Junpei, who wouldn’t dismiss how Junpei’s circumstances or feelings. and then Junpei dies.

Also, the symbolism in the opening? The Junpei fish ENLARGING??? HNKDJSFLJDSF JUNPEI NOOO-

Also ALSO (sorry this is the last ‘also’), did we ever learn if Junpei was a sorcerer, or was he a window that possessed enough talent to summon a shikigami? I at first thought Junpei was a window, since he was able to see Mahito, and was hoping that we’d get a more detailed explanation of what windows actually do. (Do they just wander around Tokyo, or wherever they live, and act all ‘La Dee Da, just living my regular, normal life, oOOHHH is that a special grade? Tell that to the sorcerers, maybe I’ll get a bonus!’ Is their life basically a demented version of Pokemon Go? I have so many questions-)

All the villains were well written, and had super cool character designs. My top three villains other than Sukuna, my top three villains are Geto, and Mahito.

Geto’s backstory in the Hidden Inventory arc was so incredibly written, I especially liked the way Gege wrote how Getou’s righteous ideals gradually deteriorating throughout the Hidden Inventory arc as he realizes the depth of the curses of humanity, the dark hatred the “weak” hold towards things they have no understanding of. (i.e. Riko’s death by the Star Religious Group, Haibara’s death, and finally the villagers ignorant treatment and abuse towards Geto’s twins, Mimiko and Nanako, beating and imprisoning them for “causing” the deaths of the villagers) Geto’s chilling charisma and the reasoning behind his actions as a villain makes him a top tier villain in my eyes. 

As for Mahito, I love to hate him, and that why I think he is a great antagonist. I guess I’ve just been seeing a lot of villains that because of their tragic backstories, the readers or characters sympathize with them and rationalising their actions, turning the villain into a flaky antihero of lesser impact. It’s very refreshing to have a villain who is just pure evil. 

I think that Mahito fulfilled his purpose as an antagonist very well; his twisted ideals on the worth of human life foiling Itadori’s own ideals of giving others a “proper death”, the curse making Yuji continuously adapt both physically and mentally to defeat him. Physically, by learning new spells and techniques to defeat Mahito, such as the Black Flash (and possibly his own cursed technique! The weird “Past That Never Happened” in the fights with Choso and Todo), or mentally, by questioning his ideals, such as what exactly is a “proper death”, after Yuji had to kill the transfigured humans.

Some Honorable Mentions of Good Villains IMO: Jogo, because I find his ideals of curses, who stem from the true emotions of hatred and fear, being superior yet suppressed by the emotionally faceted humans is definitely fascinating, and eerily reminds me of Geto’s hatred towards non sorcerers.  Dagon was pretty cute in his Cursed Womb stage, and I really liked Hanami because the eldritch environmentalist aesthetic is pretty coolio  👌 .

How do Inumaki children learn to speak if all the adults barely talk, only saying inane words like “salmon” and NOT ACTUALLY meaning “salmon, the fish” but an adult secret code for a definition that you might not even know?? Or do the adults just charmspeak the kids, like “SPEAK small child, and have full language comprehension, O tiny ball of pudge!” and boom! Babies talking in complete sentences, maybe understanding weird adult customs. Will the child know when then adult actually mean salmon, the fish, and not the code word salmon?

Let’s assume that Inumaki clan children from learning to speak to four or six years old will be able to speak normally until the clan technique sets in (because that’s when the jjk wiki says cursed techniques kick in). How do you explain to a toddler: “Hey sweetie, happy birthday, have a present! Oh, by the way, those cool tattoos of yours mean that you can’t talk normally to anybody anymore, EVER. Only using these specific words as code to mean these specific meanings, restricting any chance of normal interactions with non-sorcerers if by some inane chance you DON’T want to become a child soldier jujutsu sorcerer. Welp, guess you have to become a jujutsu sorcerer now! Make sure to restrict your choice of words, you could kill somebody! Have fun playing with your Legos honey, welcome to adult life.” Like, EXCUSE ME? 

You can’t tell mw a four year old is expected to understand that (or didn’t kill somebody by accident via cursed speech. That MUST have happened at least once). 

This is all an elaborate way of saying please give us Inumaki backstory, I’m very curious.

Is Gojo a sociopath/narcissist?

tl;dr Using the criteria of DSM-V, Gojo is neither.

Anime-onlies, beware as manga spoilers be ahead.

I want to preface that I am not an expert in psychology. I only have a passing interest in it and have taken a few intro courses.

So what is the DSM-V, and why are we using it?

Pulling from the American Psychiatric Association website: “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the handbook used by health care professionals in the United States and much of the world as the authoritative guide to the diagnosis of mental disorders. DSM contains descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. It provides a common language for clinicians to communicate about their patients and establishes consistent and reliable diagnoses that can be used in the research of mental disorders. DSM has been periodically reviewed and revised since it was first published in 1952. The previous version of DSM was completed nearly two decades ago; since that time, there has been a wealth of new research and knowledge about mental disorders.”

Keep in mind that the DSM-V was published nearly a decade ago and may be outdated, but this will probably be the closest we can get to an “official and credible” definition of narcissism and sociopathy, which has been redefined as antisocial personality disorder.

Here’s a link to the book. I will list each characteristic, and then apply it to Gojo, providing reasons on why he does or does not fit.

Antisocial personality disorder

A pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:

1) Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors, as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest. - N

While Gojo is the strongest sorcerer, the higher-ups were also not afraid to put an on-sight execution on Geto despite him also being a promising special grade sorcerer. And if we define acts like murder, assault, or theft for being grounds for arrest, then Gojo has only committed murder on a human being once.

2) Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure. - N

There are no signs that Gojo has some sort of master plan that involves deception. His dream supposedly is to nurture and create strong and clever allies to reform their society, and he has not acted in a deceptive manner.

3) Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead. - N

Gojo has shown signs of being able to plan ahead, as he asked Okkotsu to take care of the others in the case he was incapacitated and to search for more Black Rope. In addition, after the Goodwill Event, he asked the students what their plan was going to be, and what they wanted to do. In addition, we see that he is able to keep composed and analyze his opponents in battle, like in his fight with Toji, and overall he appears to be a capable fighter, which necessitates a need for strategy.

4) Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults. - N

There’s really not many moments where Gojo gets irritated. He gets angry when he finds out the higher-ups have conspired behind his back to kill Itadori, and when he sees Kenjaku. A case could be made that he got angry when Jogo and Hanami insulted him in Shibuya, but Jogo brushing him off in his introduction fight did not rile Gojo up. Gojo is only aggressive in combat, which is sometimes necessary for survival, and Gojo has only started one fight, which was when he asks Itadori to bring out Sukuna. The rest of the fights that Gojo is involved with is him reacting to the instigator.

There could be a case with how Gojo repeatedly picked fights with Geto, as volume 9 extra implies that Geto often set off the alarms because of these fights, but they were also best friends and still got along in spite of their ideological conflict.

5) Reckless disregard for safety of self or others. - Y

As a teen, Gojo destroyed a building that could have possibly injured Utahime and Mei Mei. As an adult, he uses Purple rather dangerously close to Itadori and Todo, though he could have expected Todo to know to keep his distance. He also sent Panda and Inumaki to Geto, but it may not qualify as reckless since Gojo believed Geto would not kill them.

However, Gojo also shows instances of him keeping in mind the safety of others. When Gojo senses Jogo coming for him, he tells Ijichi to continue on ahead. When Gojo brings Itadori, he also tells him to stay close. In Shibuya, surrounded by thousands of transfigured humans, Gojo casts his Domain Expansion long enough to not harm the regular humans, instead of sacrificing them to eliminate all the curses. When Hanami invades the Goodwill event, he believes that if any of the students died then it would be a loss for them.

Possibly because of Limitless, Gojo does recklessly disregard his own safety, as the fanbook states that he asked Mei Mei to use a very lethal technique on him, and has a rather tame reaction to getting stabbed in the back.

6) Consistent  irresponsibility,  as  indicated  by  repeated  failure  to  sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations. - N

In the first light novel chapter 4, Ijichi mentions that Gojo is strangely dependable. We see later on that Gojo carries the backbone of Jujutsu society and often cleans up their mess. In addition, in the beginning of the Cursed Womb arc, Fushiguro mentions that Gojo has better things to do than be a teacher. While many characters often call Gojo irresponsible, it is implied he often goes on travels to exorcise curses that no one else can. In addition, chapter 1 of the first light novel also has Gojo mentioning that he can only sight-see when he’s working, therefore implying he has very little leisure time. And according to the official fanbook, Gojo only sleeps for a little bit.

7) Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another. - Y

Gojo does demonstrate a lack of remorse, as seen by his constant teasing and insulting of Utahime. Teen Gojo also had a tendency to enjoy making others cry, but has not demonstrated this so far as an adult. In addition, he did not feel angry or guilty or sad at Amanai’s death, though it is fair to point out that he was not in the right state of mind at the time.

Narcissistic personality disorder

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

1) Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements). - N

The important part is “exaggerates” as Gojo being the strongest is not an exaggeration. To put it simply, Gojo can walk the talk.

2) Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love. - N

As mentioned before, his goal is to nurture strong allies to reform society. It is also not for his own benefit either. As the strongest, he already gets special privileges from the system.

3) Believes  that  he  or  she  is  “special”  and  unique  and  can  only  be understood  by,  or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions). - N

Gojo seems to actively not associate with higher ranking members, and his associates aren’t special or high status either. In addition, he’s a teacher, which is not an occupation of prestige, and would actually have to interact with beginners on a daily basis.

In addition, while Gojo calls himself the strongest, which could be an argument that he thinks he is special and unique, Gojo is shown to have shared the title with Geto, therefore conveying that he never thought being the strongest was something only he could be.

Another argument could be that Gojo only hung out with Geto because Geto was just as strong, or special, but Gojo is also friends with Shoko, and she is not considered as strong.

4) Requires excessive admiration. - N

There is only one instance in which he does this, and that is when he talks with Nanami after the first incident with Mahito. However, Nanami afterwards mentions to keep making those jokes to lighten the mood for Itadori. In many other circumstances, he does not request admiration. His students often do not really show him much respect, and he does not take any measures to correct this.

5) Has  a  sense  of  entitlement  (i.e.,  unreasonable  expectations  of especially  favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations). - N

Gojo is seen to offer his students a choice. To Itadori, he asks if he is willing to die right now or die after consuming all the fingers. To Fushiguro, he asks if he wants to stay with him or go to the Zenin. To Okkotsu, he asks if he wants to stay in the chamber forever isolated or attend the school. This is inline with his realization after Geto defects that he cannot save those who do not want to be saved. And this is still seen as a teenager when he brings up giving Amanai the choice if she wanted to merge or not.

One could argue that the fact Gojo is fine with being slightly late and makes some rather ridiculous demands of Ijichi, is him being entitled. But in the first light novel chapter 4, Ijichi also explains that it's rather due to Gojo's own high standards for himself that he also projects on others. He demand so much from Ijichi because he himself has been demanded so, which can be seen in his status of the strongest and constantly being needed places. So it's not so much as entitlement and more overestimating people because he thinks they can compare to him, which also conflicts with symptom #3.

6) Is interpersonally exploitative (i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends). - N

There could be a case that Gojo only saved Itadori, Okkotsu, and Fushiguro because they were potential allies. However, it is mentioned that Gojo has saved many sorcerers before, yet we have not heard of any of them. Therefore an assumption can be made that Gojo still saved some sorcerers that lacked potential.

Another case could be with the fact Geto claims Gojo sent Panda and Inumaki to sort of trigger Yuta into growing. However while sending them, he did state that he would be there quickly afterward, but was stalled by Miguel. In addition, he trusted Geto to not kill sorcerers unnecessarily. And while this may still be manipulative, it's not exploitative because Panda and Inumaki cares about Yuta and Maki and probably would have went regardless.

7) Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others. - Y

There are often times where Gojo is not as emotionally sensitive as he should be. In the first light novel chapter 2, Gojo does not handle the situation with tact, and Nanami scolds him for it. He often insults and teases Utahime against her wishes. In response to Okkotsu trying to commit suicide, Gojo tells him he’s a pretty depressing guy. (Edit: the literal translation was actually "that's dark" so it was more of a statement than judgement)

However, there are also some examples of Gojo recognizing the needs of others. In the same chapter of the light novel, Gojo asks Nanami to take care of Itadori because he recognizes Nanami is more suited to that role. He also recognizes Amanai’s disappointment in returning early, so he delays the trip for her. He also knows what Fushiguro’s mental block is, and helps him overcome it to cast an incomplete Domain Expansion.

Gojo does have empathy, but it appears to be in a rather limited capability.

8) Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her. - N

There are no instances where Gojo is shown to mention jealousy.

9) Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes - Y

Self-explanatory.

In conclusion, with Gojo scoring a 2/7 for antisocial personality disorder and a 2/9 for narcissistic personality disorder, we can conclude that Gojo has neither.
