Muppet Fact #1052
Originally, Kermit was going to be sitting on a lilly pad and not a log during the "Rainbow Connection" scene in The Muppet Movie, but it was easier to hide Jim Henson and position Kermit using the log.

"I won't allow for them to continue to poison my kids," one Gulf Coast environmental justice advocate said.
Climate advocates and frontline community leaders published a letter Tuesday urging concerned individuals to join them in Washington, D.C., in early February for a sit-in at the Department of Energy where they will demand that it end the expansion of liquefied natural gas exports.
Stopping the LNG buildout has emerged as a major priority for the climate movement in recent months, as just one proposed project, Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) facility, would emit 20 times more climate pollution than the controversial Willow oil drilling project in Alaska. But CP2 is only one of more than 20 LNG export facilities planned for the Gulf Coast, which would have combined emissions that exceed those of the European Union or 850 coal plants, Stop LNG said in a statement.
"If [President Joe Biden] wants to be a true climate president, his administration will stop the approval of new LNG facilities. If not we'll keep pushing until they do," letter signatory and Gulf Coast environmental justice organizer Roishetta Ozane wrote on social media. "I won't allow for them to continue to poison my kids."
Tumblr media
The action is planned for February 6-8 at the Department of Energy. "We're writing to ask you to do something hard but important: Come to Washington D.C. in the middle of this winter, to join a demonstration and, if you can, risk arrest in a large-scale civil disobedience action," the letter—which was signed by several prominent activists including Alexandria Villaseñor, Bill McKibben, Jane Fonda, Rebecca Solnit, and Varshini Prakash—begins.
The planned direct action builds on months of pressure on the administration to stop the planned expansion of LNG exports, including a petition to the DOE signed by more than 300,000 people and a letter to Biden signed by more than 170 scientists. Polling from Data for Progress and Fossil Free Media found that 60% of likely voters would support the Biden administration limiting LNG exports.
"We need the DOE to tell the president the truth: Expanding LNG damages our climate, and economy, and the communities forced to live alongside these facilities."
"It's time to convince the Department of Energy to stop licensing new export terminals for liquefied natural gas," Tuesday's letter reads. "Time after time they've approved these proposals, so the U.S. is now the biggest exporter of gas on Earth—and that volume could quadruple if the industry has its way. There's no bigger climate bomb left on planet Earth."
There are signs the administration is paying attention to the growing clamor and may be open to a change in policy. On Monday, Politico reported that the DOE was reviewing its decision-making process for approval LNG projects to make sure that it was considering the climate, economic, and security impacts.
"This would be smart policy and good politics," Jamie Henn of Fossil Free Media posted in response to the news.
Tumblr media
The letter states that organizers "need the administration to stop CP2—the next big facility up for approval—and all other facilities by committing to a serious pause to rework the criteria for public interest designation, incorporating the latest science and economics, before any such facility is permitted," the letter reads.
"We need the DOE to tell the president the truth: Expanding LNG damages our climate, and economy, and the communities forced to live alongside these facilities," it continues. "That includes the land, water, and air in Louisiana and Texas, where most of these facilities are built—it's why some of us have fought on the front lines for years. We've rushed kids with asthma attacks to the hospital, seen our fishing spots and beaches polluted with chemicals, and breathe air filled with poisons everyday. We know what's at stake."
The letter writers said that they had committed "to keep this action peaceful in word, mood, and action." Those who cannot travel to D.C. may participate in solidarity actions from their home. Those who do plan to participate should sign up on stoplng.org. They will need to complete online training, including one session the night before risking arrest.
"2023 saw the hottest weather on this planet in at least 125,000 years; we think it is an honor to rise in defense of the planet we love, and the places where we live," the letter concludes. "Thank you for considering joining in."

Torsdag 21. Mars: På besøk hos Alesia! 💗 Må møtes igjen snart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Referees Did Not Send Mahomes to the Superbowl.. The Bengals Did
On Saturday January 29th, Patrick Mahomes etched his name into NFL history by becoming only the 16thquarterback to stamp a ticket to three Superbowls. The game was a tightly contested matchup between Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs and Zac Taylor’s Cincinnati Bengals. Although Mahomes and company got off to an early 13 – 6 lead over Burrow led Bengals in the first half, Joe “Cool” unsurprisingly narrowed the gap despite a depleted offensive line and losing wide receiver, Tyler Boyd in the second quarter to a thigh injury. The story all week however, was centered around the health of Patrick Mahomes.
A week and a day prior during the AFC Divisional Round, Kansas City had edged out the Jacksonville Jaguars for the right to move on to the AFC Championship game, though not without a price. During what was an otherwise inconsequential 4 yard pass on a first down play late in the first quarter, Mahomes was brought down from behind by Arden Key which led to his ankle being badly sprained. While the Kansas City starter received X-Rays on the injury, backup quarterback Chad Henne led what would prove to be crucial drive which resulted in a touchdown catch by Travis Kelce. Mahomes would return in the second quarter when X-rays came back negative, but noticeably limited and so the talk of the NFL all last week became about a right ankle.
A close game ending 23 – 20. The Chiefs prevail. The crowd was electric. The defense was opportunistic and vicious in their pass rush. Gay and Sneed exit with injuries on defense. Hardman & Toney hurt. Juju scratched. Burrow, two picks too many. All this adversity and still Kansas City pulls through with Harrison Butker capping it off with a conference clinching kick that would send the Chiefs to their third Superbowl in four years. Cue the credits. Obviously, these are the highlights, but this is not the story we’re talking about this week.
Instead, this Kansas City Chief fan will have to listen for the next two weeks to all the talking heads at Fox, NFL Network, Barstool Sports and ESPN about the idea that somehow the officials “rigged” or “blew” or “insert-superlative-here” the AFC Championship game. Allow me to be perfectly clear. A referee or a crew there-of should never be the topic of conversation in any game, let alone a conference championship. However, what I am startled by is the amount of attention that this instance of overzealous officiating is receiving. Sunday night’s game was not the first time that referees in big games have had questionable, missed, or phantom calls or a game was decided by a bad rule. Not by a long shot. Examples you ask? I have a few.
The Tuck Rule Game- I might as well start big since the referees in this classic set the stage for the next 21 years of football. Tom Brady was sack-fumbled late in the fourth quarter of the 2001-02 AFC Divisional Round against the Raiders’ Charles Woodson and the Raiders kneeled it out for the win. Just kidding. As Brady was being tackled a rule set in ’99 was utilized to determine that in fact, Brady’s arm was moving forward in an attempt to pass, rather than an attempt to “tuck” the ball back into his body. The following is the exact language of that rule.
“NFL Rule 3, Section 22, Article 2, Note 2. When [an offensive] player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble.”
The problem here is that “any forward movement of his arm” includes a pump fake, and any objective viewer giving this play the eye test, who knows anything about what a quarterback’s body looks like when it is fully engaged in the throwing motion can see that this was a fumble.
Rams vs. Saints 2019 NFC Championship- Easily the worst call, or rather no call of all time. Rams Nickell Robey-Coleman absolutely commits a penalty against Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis. Forget just pass interference, the referees could have called targeting, helmet to helmet contact, etc. The point is, it was the most egregious call in NFL history and in a time where the NFL had every fathomable resource to get the call right and still failed and so the conversation became that the play had cost Saints and mostly Drew Brees, his last shot at a second Superbowl ring.
Chiefs vs. Patriots 2019 AFC Championship- Finally, I’ll end with one that hits close to home with me for obvious reasons and I’ll keep it short. Chris Jones tapped Brady’s shoulder pad and got called for a roughing the passer penalty. That would have been the whole conversation of the week if not for the aforementioned call in the saints game listed above. The Patriots would have been forced to punt. The Dee Ford offsides penalty would never had happened, and if both games, both NFC and AFC championships were officiated better than they were, we would have gotten a better and more competitive Superbowl between the Chiefs and the Saints. Brees would have left with two rings or Mahomes would have shown us he’s a winner a year earlier. Right? Wrong.
The fact of the matter is that those things didn’t happen and the results are as they stand. The bottom line is that if the Raiders had executed defensively and tackled better at the end of the fourth quarter and in overtime, Vinatieri never kicks us into the Brady-Belichick era. Also, if the Saints executed better defensively early in that title game, then that no-call is a non-factor and the same goes for if Brees doesn’t toss a pick to Johnson in overtime. Yes indeed, the Chiefs got hit with a bad call but if Dee Ford lines up correctly that game winning drive is squandered and the Chiefs likely go on to pummel a Rams team that wasn’t ready for the moment.
What’s the point? The point is that it is never any one call that wins and loses these games. There is a reason you hear every coach say what Zac Taylor said after being asked about the call on Joseph Ossai, “We’re not going to make this about one play.” The reason is because it’s true. The Bengals had every chance in the third and fourth quarters to stomp out hope for the Chiefs. Instead, they played poor enough to allow Patrick Mahomes to limp his way to the Superbowl. No one person, player, coach or official decided this game. The Bengals simply left themselves in a position to lose.

New survey data out this week shows that U.S. voters—regardless of party affiliation—overwhelmingly support a windfall profits tax on U.S. oil corporations that are using Russia's war on Ukraine to hike prices at the pump.
According to polling results released by the League of Conservation Voters, 80% of U.S. voters—including 73% of Republicans—support "placing a windfall profits tax on the extra profits oil companies are making from the higher gasoline prices they are charging because of the Russia-Ukraine situation."
More broadly, 87% of U.S. voters want Congress and President Joe Biden to "crack down on price gouging and excessive price increases by oil companies that result in higher gas prices at the pump."
Jamie Henn, director of Fossil Free Media, said in a statement Friday that the survey data shows voters "know who is to blame for high gas prices: Big Oil."
"For politicians on both sides of the aisle, this polling is proof that their constituents overwhelmingly support the idea of a windfall profits tax that would stop Big Oil profiteering and send relief directly to consumers," Henn added. "If members of Congress refuse to act, it'll be concrete evidence that they’re in the pockets of the industry."
Tumblr media
The fresh polling came days after a group of House and Senate Democrats unveiled legislation that would hit large, highly profitable oil companies with "a per-barrel tax equal to 50% of the difference between the current price of a barrel of oil and the pre-pandemic average price per barrel between 2015 and 2019."
"Revenue raised from the windfall profits of big oil companies will be returned to consumers in the form of a quarterly rebate, which would phase out for single filers who earn more than $75,000 in annual income and joint filers who earn more than $150,000," according to a summary released by the office of Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the bill's lead sponsor in the House.
After an initial surge following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, oil prices have fallen in recent days—but gas prices in the U.S. have remained elevated, bolstering the narrative that corporate profiteering is driving up costs at the pump.
"Oil prices are decreasing, gas prices should too," President Joe Biden wrote in a Twitter post on Wednesday. "Last time oil was $96 a barrel, gas was $3.62 a gallon. Now it's $4.31. Oil and gas companies shouldn’t pad their profits at the expense of hardworking Americans."
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, echoed the president's message.
"Once more for the people in the back: rising oil prices are being caused by corporate greed," Jayapal wrote.

From Toy Story to Toy Story 4: A Comparison
Tumblr media
Different methods were applied in the first film; movement, mood, atmosphere, character, animation, and music. Camera movement should be relative to the objects in the shot, the transition from a pencil to a computer can be often difficult, as reality varies in scale compared to the perspective of sketches. The colors, shapes, and sizes of the various sets are chosen to emphasize the emotions and actions being portrayed. Andy’s room is very bright, safe and with soothing colors, this can represent warmth, optimism, friendly, excitement, and so on. The atmosphere can really change the way a specific scene in Toy Story works. The techniques used can produce motion that is so detailed and fluid that a character's emotion can be seen clearly, all set in an enticing world that has the uncanny ability to appear both real and unreal at the same time. The model and design of the characters were based on the director’s toys, Woody was based on John Lasseter’s toy “Casper” when he was a child while Buzz Lightyear was based on “G.I Joe”, a very popular action figure in the late 90’s. Skywalker Sound were in charge of adding sound effects to the final musical score. The song’s found in the film depicts the scenarios that are happening with the characters (Note that the characters do not sing in the film). The song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” captures a child's love for a toy, and vice-versa.

Newer and more advanced technology with better softwares enables the animators of Toy Story 4 to use better methods and techniques in animating the film. Preliminary sketches is a technique used for giving an idea on how the story will go down. This is a rough draft of the movie which gives the animation team an overall understanding of the story. Along with this, color scripts are used to improve the visual development of the film. In editing and creating character models, editing softwares is used in order to mold, sculpt, and refine each character’s 3D model to be used in the animation. Also, rigging is also applied to the characters. Rigging is a technique which gives every character a movable skeleton into its body which is like an advanced digital puppeting of a character. Animators will easily be able to manipulate each character’s movements using controls from the rigging software. In order to simulate the appearance of different materials such as plastic, fabric, metal, wood, glass, or skin, computer programs called “shaders” are used. Shading artists furnish the 3D models of each character with real life textures, finishes, and tints to make the movie seem more realistic. Lastly, animators used softwares that mimics the physics of light. Pixar Animators add virtual light sources in each scene to draw attention to story points and cultivate a certain mood.

Muppet Fact #432
Originally, Muppets From Space was to be directed by Randal Kleiser, of Grease fame.
The script for this version of the film was written by Jerry Juhl and Joey Mazzarino. It was extremely parody heavy and the ending was vastly different.
When asked about it by Joe Hennes of Tough Pigs, Mazzarino said,
"In my draft, the aliens were getting the signal of old Muppet Shows, and they made themselves look like Gonzo because he was the ultimate being to him. And then they peel back to reveal themselves to be these hideous creatures. And it’s not about family being those guys, his family is the Muppets. So he’s still a whatever, he’s not an alien in the end. So the fact that they made him an alien bugs the crap out of me."
When directors eventually changed to Tim Hill, best known as a writer for SpongeBob SquarePants, all of the parody elements were cut and the film became "more real."
Joey Mazzarino went on record in 2009 saying that he hates the ending of Muppets From Space in the final cut.

Common Dreams
October 26, 2022
A United Nations report published Wednesday ahead of November's COP27 talks warns that planetary heating could reach a catastrophic 2.9°C by the end of the century without immediate action from the world's largest polluters to dramatically rein in carbon emissions and transition away from fossil fuels.
The analysis by the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) examines the climate commitments of the 193 national parties to the Paris climate accord, which sets out to limit warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels—an amount of heating that would still have devastating impacts across the world, particularly in poor and low-lying nations.
"Those who are expected to do more are far from doing enough, and the consequences of this is affecting lives and livelihoods across the globe."
Even if countries meet their current climate targets—something many nations, including the United States, are not on track to achieve as climate advocates and scientists push for bolder action—global carbon emissions are projected to rise 10.6% by 2030 relative to 2010 levels and the planet is set to warm by an average of 2.1 to 2.9°C by 2100.
"The latest U.N. report is another reminder that we are still just throwing cups of water at a raging inferno," Jamie Henn, director of Fossil Free Media, wrote on Twitter. "It's past time for [U.S. President Joe Biden] to declare a climate emergency and use every power he has to get us off fossil fuels."
The report notes that while "some progress" has been made toward reducing planet-warming emissions over the past year, "an urgent need for either a significant increase in the level of ambition of [nationally determined contributions] between now and 2030 or a significant overachievement" of climate action plans will be necessary to avert disastrous warming. The New York Times noted that "just 26 of 193 countries that agreed last year to step up their climate actions have followed through with more ambitious plans."
"The downward trend in emissions expected by 2030 shows that nations have made some progress this year," said Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of U.N. Climate Change. "But the science is clear and so are our climate goals under the Paris Agreement. We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5°C world."
"To keep this goal alive," Stiell added, "national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years."
The report was published as extreme weather made more intense by the climate emergency continues to ravage large swaths of the globe, taking lives, destroying communities, and exacerbating the intertwined crises of poverty, hunger, and inequality. Millions are reeling from devastating flooding in Nigeria and Pakistan while East Africa is in the midst of a starvation crisis intensified by prolonged drought.

The potential impacts of 2.9°C of warming are stark. As Scott Kulp, a computational scientist at Climate Central, told Buzzfeed last year, "an estimated 12% of the current global population living on land could be threatened under long-term future sea level rise under the 3°C scenario."
"So that amounts to 810 million people," Kulp noted.
Another expert, Rutgers University climate scientist Robert Kopp, told the outlet that "the more we push the system above 2°C—but we don't know how much—the more the chance we trigger ice sheet processes that could rapidly increase sea level rise."
Sameh Shoukry, Egypt's minister of foreign affairs and president-designate of the upcoming COP27 talks, said in a statement that the new UNFCCC report is further "testimony to the fact that we are off track on achieving the Paris climate goal and keeping the 1.5 degrees within reach."
"Raising ambition and urgent implementation is indispensable for addressing the climate crisis," said Shoukry. "This includes cutting and removing emissions faster and at wider scope of economic sectors, to protect us from more severe adverse climate impacts and devastating loss and damage."
"This is a sobering moment, and we are in a race against time," Shoukry added. "Several of those who are expected to do more are far from doing enough, and the consequences of this is affecting lives and livelihoods across the globe. I am conscious that it is and should be a continuum of action until 2030 then 2050. However, these alarming findings merit a transformative response at COP27."
Whether a summit sponsored by Coca-Cola and organized in part by a greenwashing public relations firm is up to the task of delivering such a response remains to be seen.

Greatest Wins in Next Three 2007 Bowl Games - Michigan, Southern California and Georgia - Part 6
Here are the following 3 champs of the current year's 2007 school football bowl game outcomes:
Capital One Bowl - Michigan Outlasts Florida, 41-35, as Lloyd Carr Wins His Last Game
In the event that the Michigan Wolverines had wrapped it up and put it under the tree, active mentor Lloyd Carr couldn't have gotten a superior Christmas present from his players as they defeated 4 turnovers to turn around No. 9 Florida, 41-35, in the Capital One Bowl.
The long-lasting, famous Michigan mentor declared his retirement after another misfortune to Ohio State in November. Had he not resigned, he would most likely have been approached to leave. Michigan employed Rich Rodriguez who dashed from his head instructing work at West Virginia to assume control over Michigan's celebrated football program.
The success was immense for Michigan's seniors as they won their first bowl game in quite a while. Chad Henne tossed for 373 yards and 3 touchdowns and Mike Hart hammered out 129 hurrying yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Gators held the game close gratitude to Michigan's 4 turnovers and a lot of huge plays by sophomore Heisman Trophy victor Tim Tebow and his fast partner Percy Harvin. Tebow was playing with a messed up bone in his non-tossing hand and was feeling the squeeze yet was as yet 17-of-33 for 154 yards and 3 touchdowns. He additionally ran for 57 yards and another score.
Harvin got 165 yards on 13 conveys (12.6 yards per convey), scored once, and furthermore got 9 goes for another 77 yards and a subsequent touchdown. At last, it was insufficient as Michigan won one for Carr.
The Gators neglected to change over a fourth down play at its 25-yard line and K. C. Lopata's 41-yard field objective put Michigan ahead 41-35 with just 2:21 remaining. Florida got another shot however Tebow tossed 4 straight air balls. Both Michigan and Florida completed the season with 9-4 imprints.
BCS Rose Bowl - Southern California Crushes Illinois, 49-17, to Make a Statement
Pete Carroll and his Southern Cal players despite everything are thinking BCS national title game, however the Trojans will need to trust that that will occur. They may have completed at 11-2, equivalent to Louisiana State that will play in the title game, how to open a slot machine business yet the Trojans lost at an inappropriate time to an inappropriate group Stanford at home.
In a presentation of dissatisfaction and distress, Southern Cal truly stepped Illinois 49-17 in the BCS Rose Bowl game to say something. First year recruit half back Joe "Where Do They Find These Guys?" McKnight tore through the Illini protection for 170 yards (125 yards hurrying and 45 yards accepting). McKnight's yield was a piece of the Trojans' 633 yards of offense.
The yield set a Rose Bowl record and the Trojans' 49 focuses tied the record. The victory game gave Southern Cal 11 successes for a remarkable sixth consecutive year. Illinois Coach Ron Zook still completed the year at 9-4, an incredible turnaround after a 2-19 record in his initial two years at Illinois.
Try not to be confounded here, Illinois was a 13.5 point dark horse going in. Recollect that it was Illinois which managed Ohio State its lone misfortune, 28-21, and the Buckeyes will confront LSU in the national title game. Caps off to Zook and his players for a mind blowing year.
BCS Sugar Bowl - Hawaii's Unbeaten Streak Ends as Georgia Wins Easily, 41-10
Georgia's Bulldogs were jumping frantic that they were not welcome to play in the BCS national title game, and Hawaii's Warriors were forced to bear their disappointment, losing 41-10 as their fantasy of an ideal season finished in the BCS Sugar Bowl.
Hawaii came into the game at 12-0, the main undefeated group among the NCAA's 119 Division 1A schools. They did it with mentor June Jones' run-and-shoot offense that found the middle value of 46+ focuses a game, the arm of junior quarterback Colt Brennan and some incredible beneficiaries.
Brennan is the genuine article. He has set more NCAA passing records than Carter has liver pills, however nothing appeared to intrigue Georgia, and particularly Marcus Howard, who turned into the game's MVP as he had 3 sacks, 2 constrained bobbles and a tipped ball that colleague Dannell Ellerbe caught.
Actually Georgia was just too large, excessively quick and unreasonably solid for the Islanders this time around.
Howard and his cautious mates lived in Hawaii's backfield as Brennan was sacked multiple times, tossed 3 block attempts and lost 2 mishandles, one of which Georgia recouped for a touchdown. Georgia's guarded line pushed Hawaii everywhere throughout the field; Brennan was fortunate to escape New Orleans perfectly healthy enough to be drafted for Sunday obligation in the NFL.
"It was the quickest group I've presumably ever observed," said Brennan. To be reasonable, they would not have been so quick in the Warrior hostile line had played better and given Brennan more security so Hawaii's offense could be compelling.
It was a decent yet troublesome game for Hawaii to swallow, however the Warriors will live to battle one more day. They needed to realize that their 12-0 record was against a lot more vulnerable rivalry than each different BCS group confronted. They had their way in the Western Athletic Conference, in any event, bringing down Boise State, which likewise lost its bowl game to humble East Carolina 41-38. Indeed, even the Washington Huskies, who had an important lead on Hawaii, couldn't beat the Warriors as their game finished with Hawaii on top.
The residents of Hawaii experienced passionate feelings for their Warriors and well they ought to have. Hawaii had a mark year. Different groups are presently attempting to take June Jones away from Hawaii. It merited the annihilation when you realize that Hawaii figures to make a $4 million payout for its appearance in the BCS Sugar Bowl. For a group whose selecting spending plan was an immaterial $50,000 every year, that is a great deal of moola. Hawaii would now be able to stand to enroll ability on the territory.
June Jones has become an open door for some different groups. His run-and-shoot offense has brought about a 76-41 record (64% win rate) in 9 seasons, including the current year's 12-1 imprint and BCS bowl appearance. Jones assumed control over a Hawaii group that was winless in 1998 and went 9-4 in his first season. Interpretation: You don't have to remain wakeful evenings appealing to God for Hawaii's prosperity; the Warriors and doing fine and dandy, bless your heart.
(Proofreader's Note: This is the sixth article of an arrangement on the 2007 bowl game outcomes.)

Nötknäpparen och de fyra världarna / Nutcracker and the Four Realms, the (2018) [US]
¡Oi!
