The Bat-Morning Report
Monty Python, the iconic British comedy group, has a unique nickname for Radio New Zealand (RNZ) National's morning flagship news and current affairs program, Morning Report. They affectionately refer to it as Bat-Morning Report, drawing inspiration from Nelson Riddle's instrumental soundtracks for the 1960s Batman TV series.
Morning Report is a staple in New Zealand's media landscape, providing listeners with up-to-date news, interviews, and analysis on a wide range of topics. The program airs every weekday morning, helping Kiwis start their day informed and engaged with the world around them.
Tumblr media
The nickname Bat-Morning Report is a playful nod to the program's serious and authoritative tone, juxtaposed with the whimsical and adventurous spirit of the 1960s Batman TV series. Nelson Riddle's music, with its catchy melodies and dynamic rhythms, adds a touch of excitement and drama to Morning Report, making it a must-listen for many New Zealanders.
Monty Python's association with Morning Report goes beyond just the nickname. The comedy group has a long history of poking fun at traditional media and news outlets, using satire and absurdity to highlight the absurdities of the world around them. By calling the program Bat-Morning Report, Monty Python adds a touch of irreverence and humor to the serious business of news reporting.
But despite the playful nickname, Morning Report remains a vital source of information for New Zealanders. The program covers a wide range of topics, from politics and economics to culture and entertainment, providing listeners with a comprehensive overview of the day's events. With in-depth interviews, expert analysis, and on-the-ground reporting, Morning Report keeps Kiwis informed and engaged with the world around them.
youtube
In a world where news can often be overwhelming and confusing, Morning Report stands out as a beacon of clarity and reliability. The program's team of experienced journalists and presenters work tirelessly to bring listeners the most accurate and up-to-date information, helping them make sense of the complex issues facing New Zealand and the world.
And while Monty Python may playfully refer to Morning Report as Bat-Morning Report, the program's impact and importance cannot be understated. With its commitment to quality journalism and public service, Morning Report plays a crucial role in keeping New Zealanders informed and engaged with the world around them.
So the next time you tune in to Morning Report, remember the playful nickname bestowed upon it by Monty Python. Bat-Morning Report may be a lighthearted moniker, but the program's dedication to quality journalism and public service is no joke. Stay informed, stay engaged, and enjoy the unique blend of seriousness and whimsy that makes Morning Report a must-listen for Kiwis everywhere.

NCIS is gearing up to ring in a special milestone with the April 15th episode as the franchise reaches 1,000 episodes overall. But how does it all break down? Below, we’re revealing how each of the current and former spinoffs contributed to the flagship’s upcoming installment.
Tumblr media
Eddy Chen/CBS
NCIS (464 EPISODES)
Airdates: September 23, 2003–present
The Brief: “What makes NCIS so damn special?” That question is furiously put to Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) by his estranged son, Jared (Spence D. Moore II), in the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th episode. Launched in 2003, NCIS has four spinoffs and two highly anticipated shows coming — NCIS: Origins and a Michael Weatherly–Cote de Pablo project nicknamed NCIS: Europe.
The younger Vance makes his query when the two cross paths at his mom’s gravesite. Vance’s wife was killed by terrorists in 2013, and Jared can’t comprehend why his dad is so dedicated to a job that put their family in danger.
Make that puts: Vance is soon in peril and the team under attack by an enemy from the past. “We’ve heard this baddie’s name before,” exec producer Steven D. Binder told us at a celebration on the set. “As in some of our better episodes, our people risk their lives for each other. We pay homage to the O.G. NCIS and the other series.”
Guest star alert: Assisting via satellite feed are Los Angeles agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Hawai‘i boss Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey). The cavalry also includes a longtime NCIS ally, former FBI agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano).
In a scene we observed, forensic scientist Kasie (Diona Reasonover) reviews evidence with Torres (Wilmer Valderrama). Jared, desperate to help, has slept there overnight. “Kasie connects with Jared and becomes a mentor in a way,” Reasonover says.
Valderrama hints it all gets explosive, promising “a big, big set piece; all of us are involved.” And one agent does something new: “We see McGee in a position you’ve never seen him in in 20 years,” spills Sean Murray. Says Gary Cole, who plays team leader Alden Parker, “We witness some fragility of what this job entails, the obstacles that could pop up unexpectedly.”
Tumblr media
Skip Bolen/CBS
NCIS: New Orleans (155 EPISODES)
Airdates: September 23, 2014–May 23, 2021
The Brief: The Big Easy’s brassy, buoyant spirit infused the franchise’s third title, shot memorably on location. In fact, lead Scott Bakula once told TV Guide Magazine about a great only-in-NOLA moment: “being in the middle of the Mississippi River, captaining a tugboat!” His honest boss Dwayne Pride was based on a real New Orleans lawman, retired naval investigator D’Wayne Swear, who served as a consultant.
Tumblr media
Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+
NCIS: Sydney (8 EPISODES)
Airdates: November 10, 2023–present
The Brief: “In Australia, everything can kill you,” executive producer Morgan O’Neill cracked to TV Guide Magazine when the Oz-set new kid on the block arrived last year. Down Under has proved plenty perilous for tough NCIS Special Agent Captain Michelle Mackey (Olivia Swann) and her savvy partner-in-crime-fighting, Australian Federal Police Sergeant JD Dempsey (Todd Lasance). After locking horns, the American and the Aussie warmed to each other. But all may be undone thanks to JD going rogue in the finale — crikey! Good news for fans left in suspense: Sydney was just renewed!
Tumblr media
Karen Neal/CBS
NCIS: Hawai‘i  (50 EPISODES)
Airdates: September 20, 2021–present
The Brief: NCIS said aloha to the franchise’s third offshoot and first female special agent in charge, hardworking divorced mom Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey), in 2021. “I feel like I’m in a movie: Platoon meets Jurassic Park,” Lachey told TV Guide Magazine at the time. Before shooting on lush Oahu began, production held a traditional Hawaiian blessing. The island culture has defined the series, with unique cases involving paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) and Pearl Harbor survivors. Tennant’s team, a blend of mainland transplants and locals like surfer Kai Holman (Alex Tarrant), has welcomed other NCIS franchise agents for joint ops. And now L.A.’s Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) is on the island!
Tumblr media
Ron P. Jaffe/CBS
NCIS: Los Angeles (323 EPISODES)
Airdates:September 22, 2009–May 21, 2023
The Brief: For a thrilling 14 seasons, the first spinoff’s Office of Special Projects hit the sunny streets of L.A. to chase down a rap sheet of baddies from Russian mobsters to psychotic serial killers — even an office mole. Under the management of no-nonsense Henrietta “Hetty” Lange (Linda Hunt), ex–Navy SEAL Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and loner Grisha “G” Callen (Chris O’Donnell) were special agents with banter as quick as their draw. But both had endured pain: for Sam, a wife murdered by a terrorist; for G, a rocky childhood in foster care and a brutal secret program to train kids in spycraft.
Fans rooted for romance between team members Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen), whose entertaining undercover missions included posing as cult members and suburban marrieds. The cast was equally tight. O’Donnell says, “The first day on set, the original NCIS cast came in. They were like a family. I remember looking at Dani and LL thinking, ‘Are we ever going to get as close?’ Sure enough, we did.”

As long as it's not Yellowtail
I did not grow up in a wine-drinking culture. For me, just the act of having wine at all was fancy. Once I moved to the US, I started to understand the intricacies of different types of wines, identifying that I like Cab Sauvs, dislike Chardonnays and feel alright about most others. I learned that you buy new-world wines based on grapes and old-world wines based on region.
An interesting observation however, as a thoroughly average wine-buyer, has been that I avoid certain brands like the plague just because of their perception as low quality (Mondavi, Yellowtail, etc.). Other than that, I don't usually pay attention to the brand very much. I couldn't be less biased between Concha y Toro's Castillero Del Diablo and Apothic Reds (both Trader Joe's classics) as long as they fall between $8-$15 at the local store.
Other than having mild perceptions of which regional wines I prefer (Douro Valley, Cotes du Rhone, etc), I tend to just buy wines that my friends won't consider to be cheap or bad tasting. So for me, I think buying wine is mostly about perception after you've filtered away the stuff you really don't like.
I think a good way to test a nudge on buying wine would be to establish the pre-nudge base rate for a segment of buyers (or for a control group) and see how their behavior changes after the nudge over the course of the next 6 months.

post radio boston blogging hours i need to run the npr wine club. i heard it's awful bc they basically follow the winc wine club/trader joe's branded wine formula: buy up either massive amounts of bulk blending wine from puglia and sicily, cheap cote du rhone + industrial leftovers from mass new world producers, OR occasionally luck out and get leftover decent wine from the newest vintages of middling french producers. like ugh wait wait don't tell me it's actually barefoot.
what they need is to nix bottling under an npr label and to instead pick 3-4 news stories and pair them with pre-existing wines that tie to those regions. snappy packaging for the box obviously and strongly written blurbs on the wines + their producers. even if you needed bulk produced wine to lower your bottle cost, there are still sustainable wine co-ops that produce decent wine and compensate their farmers well!!
me to the npr wine club: i could fix her.

Hockey Cards for Sale!
I have a variety of hockey cards for sale if anyone is interested! Some are older players from the 90s, some are more recent ones. Since they can fit into letter-sized envelopes, I’m selling them for a small amount (mainly just to cover postage and envelopes, especially for those out of Canada). This can be paid through my Ko-Fi (via Paypal), and I’ll give the link for those interested.
Cost depends on where you live (i.e. in Canada or elsewhere), how many cards you want (any more than 5 will be sent in more than one envelope to avoid issues in mailing), and whether you want them sleeved or unsleeved.
Within Canada:
1-5 cards: $2 unsleeved, $3 sleeved
6-10 cards: $3 unsleeved, $4 sleeved
11+ cards: $5 unsleeved, $6 sleeved
Within the US:
1-5 cards: $3 unsleeved, $4 sleeved
6-10 cards: $4 unsleeved, $5 sleeved
11+ cards in the US: $5 unsleeved, $7 sleeved
Any other country:
1-5 cards: $4.50 unsleeved, $5.50 sleeved
6-10 cards: $5.50 unsleeved, $6.50 sleeved
11+ cards: $6.50 unsleeved, 7.50 sleeved

Why Aren’t Tony and Ziva Heading Back to CBS?
Question: I was excited to learn about a spinoff of NCIS featuring the returns of Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) but was sorry to hear that the show will air not on CBS but on the Paramount+ streaming platform. Why are they doing this? Fans who don’t stream will be so disappointed. — Jeannie
Matt Roush: This is how CBS President and CEO George Cheeks explained it to Vulture’s “Buffering” columnist Joe Adalian in a must-read interview: “We also announced NCIS: Origins, which is going to be on CBS. The Weatherly project really felt more like a serialized streaming show, and also was an example of us trying to expand the aperture of NCIS, which is what we did with Criminal Minds on Paramount+ (with Evolution). The whole goal here is to look at each potential creative execution and figure out where we think it ultimately should land. We had two really fantastic NCIS franchise extension ideas. One felt really right for broadcast, and one felt like a serialized streaming 10-or-13-episode idea.” Cheeks also pointed out that NCIS: Sydney had originally been developed as a streaming exclusive and only aired on CBS when the strikes left holes on the fall schedule.
Viewers who either can’t (for economic reasons) or won’t embrace streaming are always going to be disappointed when something they want to see goes behind a paywall, but even given the growing pains of many of these platforms, this is where these companies see the future (if not the present) of the industry. So this is hardly going to be an isolated situation.

Due to the inability of congressional Democrats to kill the filibuster, Republicans have once against successfully managed to kill the voting rights bill, the Freedom to Vote Act, in the US Senate. Despite knowing that the GOP would destroy the bill in Senate, Democrats relied on them and did not focus on eliminating the filibuster. This may seem an old story, but the ruling party is making the same mistake again and again. This time, the hopes were high that the Senate Democrats would somehow find a way to wrap up the filibuster because Senators Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema were both inclining with the Republicans on the voting rights bill. However, still, they just made a failed attempt to revamp the electoral system of the USA that is hindering the essentials of democracy. [caption id="attachment_9883" align="aligncenter" width="1132"] Democrats need to make sure that the two Senators who are hindering their coting rights agenda do not win their next races.[/caption] Democrats Must Teach a Lesson to Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema for Denying Voting Rights to American Democrats tried previously to pass the For the People Act, which they failed to do because Joe Manchin was not ready to compromise on some key provisions of the bill. At the end of the day, he hijacked the vision of all the Democratic caucus and made them bandwagon as per his own choices. Now, when Democrats negotiated the voting rights bill with him once again, this time, the newly crafted voting rights bill fell victim to Republican roadblocks, which brings Democrats back to square one. This failed attempt of Democrats has only served one purpose,  to reignite the debate that Democrats should try to get rid of the filibuster as soon as possible if they really want to get their bill passed. Biden is being pushed into a dead-end tunnel. He, along with other Democrats, should make sure that they make Manchin and Sinema pay for the things they have done to the party. All Democratic Senators must lobby against both of these senators in the next elections if they fail to destroy the filibuster in this term. Only then can the Democrats ensure that they could hack Congress forever. The Senate majority leader should understand by this time that Republicans are not going to vote for them in any case, especially for the voting rights legislation. However, instead of facing reality, they are requesting the GOP senators to vote for them, despite knowing the end result. This is a poor state of affairs as the  Democrats' reluctance to rely on data is costing them too much. [caption id="attachment_9885" align="aligncenter" width="992"] Trump have asked Republicans voters not to vote in the upcoming elections. This will act as a counter measure to Republicans voter suppression strategy who are suppressing voters rights.[/caption] Trump's Calls of Boycotting Elections Could Serve Democrats Purpose The Republicans' strategy to strangle Democratic voters using voter suppression techniques seems to backfire now. Former President Donald Trump has urged the GOP voters to boycott the elections if the so-called voter fraud issue is not resolved in the next elections. This could be a welcoming sign for Democrats and should serve the purpose of canceling the net effect of the Republicans' voter suppression efforts. As a significant portion of the Republican voter base is likely to comply with Trump's call, they can actually boycott the elections based on the former president's comments. This would make the suffering worse for Republicans who are contesting elections in 2022. It is pertinent to note here that these efforts of Trump can prove more detrimental for the GOP contestants of the swing states, who were already counting each and every vote to go through the finish line. This failed attempt of Democrats meant that the country might continue seeing voter suppression at the state level alongside the orchestrated partisan gerrymandering efforts.
Final Thoughts Amid Trump's calls for an election boycott, the GOP lawmakers can start embracing new tricks of voter suppression. For instance, if Republicans saw a low voter turnout in their favor just because of Trump's statement, they will surely go for another round of voter suppression. For them, maintaining their Congressional presence is more important than anything else, and they would strive to do that by hook or by crook. Once they start doing that, Democrats would find new calls for changing election laws at a federal level, which is what they are trying to do exactly right now. This tug of war between two competing ideologies will stay until the authorities at the state levels are curbed and elections are federally controlled.
