modern family

Number of Season(s): 11
Running Years: 2009-2020

Tumblr media
Personally, this show can be considered as my comfort show. The main focus of this show is something that is close to me on a daily basis, something that I counter with everyday. Modern Family has made me feel that I am not alone in this world with family issues, since everywhere I look at, especially my friends, they all seem like have harmonious family. Although that may be the surface only, Modern Family has assured me the reality of the world we live in is no perfect, including our own family. This show has showed me that it is okay to not have the perfect family and be stuck with them because not everything that happens in this world is under our control. Moreover, the time I watch this show was when I am almost at the end of my school-university-study life and about to face the real world. The trial-and-errors that Haley had and the meltdown that Alex had, all represent something that I feel during this specific period of time. Especially, Haley, her experience taught me that it is okay to not everything in my life figured out yet the moment you graduated from school and it is okay to not be financially independent immediately. All that matters is that you do not stop trying from pursuing your goals and dreams. Her experience has showed me that it is okay to not have the perfect woman life that fictional stories or media depict us.

Sitcom Love
I'm back on my Zutara nonsense! (I was never off it, I just had something else on my mind yesterday). Anyway, I love a good sitcom, and if you've read my fic Down the Road and Back Again, you know that my love of sitcoms is occasionally inspiration for my stories. Lately, I've been thinking about sitcom couples that remind me of your favorite pair and mine. Not necessarily that they're a one-to-one comparison, but just that the vibes are there. So, since I'm running low on Year of Content content ideas, I've decided to do another poll. Join me in my madness...and my dwindling supply of ideas. (Thank goodness this year's almost over).

Summarizing TV shows I've never seen
Breaking Bad: takes place where high school musical did. Jesse and Walter. 99% sure Walter's the bald chem teacher. Jesse is either gay, homophobic, or both (?). There's a lawyer woman named Skylar who Walt may or may not be hitting on the side, not sure. Meth.
Yugioh: kid has cards that can summon magical creatures. I think there's a hell realm. There's one guy, Marik, who is actually two guys in one I think, but I wouldn't swear by it.
My Hero Academia: something to do with toe joints????? Is that like. correct???? I distinctly remember something about that. There's the frog guy, bakugou (the zuko one), Deku (not the zelda tree), and the girl that looks like May from pokemon or Suki from ATLA.
Fairy Tail: I actually have seen this one but couldn't tell you a damn thing about it. There's a guild thing. Lots of fanservice. Guy with the scarf.
Miraculous Ladybug: guy and girl are in love but also superheroes who are in love and nobody knows the oter is in love and a superhero? Shenanigans ensue. They're a ladybug and a cat but in a superhero way and not a furry way.
Fox 911: copaganda but firefighters????? no idea. Swifties really like it.
Friends: I've seen SOME episodes. Two of the guys look like the same guy to me and I can't tell them apart. Friends say I'm the phoebe because she's kind of got a hippie vibe. Rachel and Monica are not wlw apparently but you could have fooled me. SMELLY CAT. Also what's his name... david schwimmer. His character is kind of annoying to me. He had a monkey once? Also CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!!!!
Supernatural: dude. NO fucking idea. Superhell. The two guys might be gay? or brothers? There's a third guy I think???? Someone's gay and someone's got a brother? They had a scooby doo crossover. Demons.
Doctor who: time travel in a phone booth??? There's a bunch of doctors. fifteen of them? One said feminist rights or something???
Supernatural: Sadie Sink, who people said I looked like in my red hair era. I think we're both just scots-irish 20somethings though idk. 80's. Byler. A lot of bowl cuts, unfortunately.
Amphibia: frogs and a blonde girl???
Moral Orel: No idea but it kind of scares me /lh. @blossyossyossy likes it.
Modern Family: family issues but there's a bazillion of them. My mom says I look like Haley dunphy. Idk who that is. Funny enough, Haley dunphy and Sadie sink look nothing alike yet I've been told I look like both of them. I don't see either, tbh.

Modern Family
Kinda already blew up on the main about this show, but I'd like to add after hearing Jesse's podcast episode w/Julie Bowen that I have to disagree with his respect of the writers. According to him, (I think on the great creators podcast) he said he gave the 'gay stamp of approval' but like...for what? Did he approve of Mitch consistently being sexually assaulted? Approve of all the fights with Cam? Approve of his character ignoring his own child whom the show began with? He's okay with his own character being consistently dunked on especially by his own husband (meaning Cam)?
Lily's age and intelligence are consistent sources of frustration and it's the show's fault. They should've put a year on the calendar in the Dunphy house when they write 'shoot Luke' in the pilot so we have a better frame of reference.
Remember in Coal Digger where Jay smacked Manny and Luke's heads and told them the family loves each other and doesn't fight? What happened with that? Why couldn't he just lightly smack sense into Manny and say 'Sherry doesn't like you, get over it'? Why did he have to pick sides? I felt bad for the abuse Manny put Sherry through with the commercial voice. She should've just said 'you know what, no' and left.
Also what was the point in Joe if Gloria was just going to be obsessed over Manny and pick him as her favorite while Jay's infatuated with Stella?
I do kinda wonder if the twins who played baby Lily would ever watch Modern Family. I feel bad for them, they were very visibly unhappy and had no reactions to anything. It’s hard to work with babies, but it should be a little easy to make them laugh and I feel for young Nolan trying to get the baby’s attention so he can do the scene they were in. The episode where they try to sleep train Lily hurts me because you can see the baby legit crying at one point. I just hope the shrieking cries weren’t actually her because that’s just cruel.
Thinking about something Nolan said on the Devon Werkheiser's podcast, that he felt tensions among adults on set and I wonder if that related to the separate writers. I also read on reddit that at some point, the two producers were doing different things and that’s why the later seasons felt off. Maybe that’s what Nolan felt.
Pretty much said all I wanted in the rant-i mean review I did before.

Modern Family episode 8.18 "Five Minutes"
Tumblr media
Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet in "Five Minutes". Image courtesy of ABC.
I’m a little worried that I missed the era of long-running shows. I actually used to wish for this- it seemed that even my favorite 11 season shows didn’t get there without some lulls along the way, fading into the background of pop culture for a year or two before resurfacing, good again but a little different somehow. So, I wished for shows to not overstay their welcome; I thought a good story didn’t wander. I don’t necessarily think that’s true anymore, and I’ve come to find that the passage of time does something to a story that can’t be replicated any other way. Modern Family is a case in point.
I watched the whole show for the first time over the past nine months, and I honestly felt a little embarrassed. I wanted to talk about it but I didn’t want to admit that I was just now getting around to what feels like the world’s most popular show. Even if it wasn’t the most talked about, I’ve never encountered anyone who’s never heard of it.
Over the years it grew into a comfort show, not because it’s a guilty pleasure, but because it provides the warm familiarity of hanging out with your best friends, who happen to be really funny. As the show neared the end, it was effortlessly emotional because it really was a whole era that was coming to an end. Seeing glimpses of how little Manny, Haley, Alex, and Luke all used to be made me wish that that much of my own life had passed alongside them and I could look back on how much I’d accomplished as the Dunphy’s grew up. I imagine that’s really special for the people who really did get to spend 11 years with the Pritchett clan.
I want to talk about “Five Minutes” just because I think it’s a really good one. On the whole, I think Mitch and Cam are Modern Family’s weak spot- their stories are generally superficial and repetitive and they are actually awful to each other, lying and keeping score all the time. But in this episode, they’re a perfectly silly united front. They’ve just boarded a plane bound for Turks and Caicos and popped some sleeping pills, settling into vacation mode. Then, a technical issue forces them to deplane and wander around LAX in search of a new flight- now high as kites. Having recently taken an edible in the LAX security line just for my flight to immediately get delayed, it seemed to me like a very plausible and hilarious premise. In their altered state, Mitch and Cam are a dumb and dumber team as they try to make their way to their new flight, with a connection in Dallas, that leaves in five minutes:
Cam: I don’t want to go to Dallas.
Mitch: Yeah, we’re going to Turks and Caicos.
Desk Attendant: Dallas is just where you make your connection.
Cam: I’m having a very hard time processing information right now.
They walk away, then look down at their boarding passes.
“Wait, why do these say Dallas?”
“I have no idea.”
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, there’s been a horrible mistake.”
“We don’t want to go to Dallas.”
They meander, forgetting everything under the sun as they walk. They find themselves at a hat stand- a haberdashery, as Cam calls it. They try on hats, complimenting each other as they do.

“Oh, look, little girl’s hats.”
“Oooh we should get one for Linda.”
“Who?”
“Um. Our daughter.”
“No, that’s LILY.”
“Oh I love that name!”
Eventually, they’re rescued by an employee on one of those indoor vehicles they have at the airport. I don’t know how else to describe them, but you know the ones, right? They’re delivered to their gate and make it to Turks and Caicos, happily ever after. But the ending is less important to me here than the journey, that was full of silly yet genuine affection for each other and forming a united front against a problem that neither of them caused.
Meanwhile, Haley is at dinner with her boyfriend, weatherman Rainer Shine, celebrating his 45th birthday. Five minutes before the cake arrives, things take a turn for the significant when Rainer, entering a midlife crisis, proposes to Haley. She initially says yes and both are excited, but cracks in their compatibility quickly surface, punctuated by a thunderstorm that Rainer failed to predict. In what is, in my opinion, one of the funniest and most underrated moments of the show, Haley hides the fact that she has the Weather app because the idea of not being people’s sole weather source hurts Rainer’s feelings:
“If it helps, my weather app didn’t predict rain either.”
“Your what?”
“Nothing.”

The rest of the characters are also occupied in this episode; Manny is trying to park at the movie theater five minutes before the movie starts, while Jay and Gloria bicker in the car. Phil and Claire, worried about Alex’s social life in college, pay her a surprise visit. They fear she is embarrassed when she tries to get rid of them, but it quickly comes to light that she’s not lonely or embarrassed- she’s just dating Claire’s weird assistant Ben.
Not to say I don’t care about those parts of this episode, but they aren’t the reason it continues to stand out to me as I progressed through three more seasons. Mitch and Cam’s wholesome silliness, and Haley’s genuine sincerity were both refreshing changes of pace for their characters that made this episode special.
Have you seen Modern Family? Who’s your favorite character? What do you think made it the household staple that it’s become? You have to date one character, who would it be?
