lee minho + lee minseo 𖤐 hoseo
aka: min siblings, minmin, biglittlemin, 민남여 (minnamyeo)
it goes without saying that all of the members collectively feel like an older brother to babyseo, however this one just so happens to actually be her brother (°▽°)
hoseo are basically the same person copied and pasted but the bigger one is cuter and the smaller one is scarier. it’s all backwards.
as siblings minho and minseo obviously bicker over trivial things as well as getting along extremely well but they tend to divert typical expectations with their undying outward support of one another. you will never catch these two bad-mouthing the other even as a joke.
don’t get them wrong, minseo will always be the very first to laugh at minho’s mistakes, but she is also the very first to compliment his bare face in the mornings. “the fairest of all the land has finally risen! would you like to make something yummy for breakfast?”
and as seo’s older bro/role model, minho takes great care in always making sure miso is happy and comfortable in every situation. he’s a bit of a helicopter mom in that sense.
minseo fully uses this trait to her advantage by this point. it’s usually just forcing him to make her a gourmet meal but she could ask him for a star from the sky, and he’d do it! after rolling his eyes of course.
nightmare (blunt rotation) duo. often gang up on the other members together simply for the fun of it.
also the only members to be able to tease the other and survive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hwang hyunjin + lee minseo 𖤐 hyunseo
aka: jinmin, tom&jerry, the dramatic and the drama
100% transparency, at first these two had no idea how to talk to each other. it was very awkward, like two kids forcibly paired on a project together, and there were a lot of contributing factors to this fact.
firstly, at the time they met hyunjin thought she was the same age as him, which lead to his very stiff way of communicating at first. this in turn made minseo (2 years younger) totally off-put with the arms length she found herself at.
fortunately miso would later grit her teeth and bare the embarrassment to act a bit more sweet and cutesy toward hyunjin in order to warm him up, and that he did. after finding out she was actually not a scary girl his age but instead the real-life blueprint for kuromi there was nothing she could do to keep him away.
hyunjin has since grown to be the thorn in her side and truly lives for the thrill of disturbing her peace despite the threats hurled his way in retaliation. they never turn out to be true, anyway, minseo finds his antics too amusing.
as for miso’s torments, hyunjin is the only member she feels actually comfortable teasingly jokingly down to, like she knows she can call him a dongsaeng and live to tell the tale. one of her favorites is the simple “hyunjin-ah.”
and maybe it’s a pisces thing but hyune is the only member seo can’t help but simp for. she tries to hide the soft spot in her ‘cold, cold heart’ for him but the occasional “cute” will slip and the facade is destroyed.
since moving dorms minseo often calls hyunjin just to ask what he’s doing and say she misses him before hanging up.
and of course prince hwang always follows up these calls by inviting her to paint or go shopping the next day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lee felix + lee minseo 𖤐 seolix
aka: lee kids, melody & kuromi, haedal (sunmoon)
the true gamer boys of the group; seolix. whatever you do, just don’t ask them about how long they played genshin last night.
with dangerous duality and voices that don’t match their appearance, felix and minseo are the sun and moon duo of stray kids, combining their opposition to illuminate the beauty in contrast.
^^ or you could just say that they’re the golden retriever/black cat combo of the group if you’re not into whimsy ʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ
felix is one of the members that minseo just can’t help but smile around even when he’s not really doing anything. just his presence alone is truly like happy vitamins.
and even though miso is typically seen as intimidating first and foremost, felix finds even the scary-looking minseo cute, especially when her gummy smile makes an appearance.
there’s also somewhat of a ‘monkey see monkey do’ phenomenon that occurs between these two. felix can’t do one (1) silly thing without minseo wanting to try it out.
on the other hand, felix is always trying to imitate miso’s cool and nonchalant demeanor, often repeating things she’s said or mirroring her ‘swag’ mannerisms (his words not mine.)
they’ve also arranged the agreement that felix will bake any treat she wishes as long as she gives him company for the time being. thankfully minseo is always willing to sit in a comfortable spot and laugh as long as she doesn’t have to participate in the cooking.
nowadays since they live in the same dorm seolix often go live together for a mukbang/secret excuse to talk about the newest game they’ve played together. babyseo stay eating well ✊🏻

Lucy and the Monsters
S3;E18~ January 25, 1965
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
When Lucy and Viv decide to check out the horror movies their boys have been watching, Lucy has a nightmare in which she and Viv are trapped in a haunted castle where they encounter a variety of horror movie characters - until their host turns them into witches themselves!
Regular Cast
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney), Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael), Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley)
Ralph Hart’s face is completely hidden by a Frankenstein mask and he has no dialogue, merely grunts. Viv says “I’m not even sure that is my son under that mask.” This is his first ‘appearance’ since “Lucy’s Contact Lenses” (S3;E10) two months earlier.
Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael) does not appear in this episode.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
George Barrows (Loretta, the Gorilla Maid) played a gorilla in his very first screen credit, Tarzan and His Mate (1934).  He donned the gorilla suit 18 more times from 1954 to 1978. His final simian character was on “The Incredible Hulk.”  This is his first appearance on “The Lucy Show” and he will return as a gorilla in two more.  He also played human characters on two episodes.
Tumblr media
Bob Burns (Ringo, the Werewolf Butler) also played the wolf man in two episodes of TV's “The Adventures of The Spirit” in 1963.  Like George Barrows, Burns played many on-screen gorillas, including on an episode of “My Three Sons” in 1966.  Burns was a good friend of Glenn Strange, the last actor to play Frankenstein in a Universal horror film.  He is also a world renown archivist and historian of props, costumes, and other screen used paraphernalia from science fiction, fantasy, and horror movies. One of his prized possessions is the the wolf's cane handle from The Wolf Man (1941).
The character’s unique moniker is likely a nod to the Beatles’ Ringo Starr.  Early in their career’s the Beatles were known for their long hair!
Tumblr media
Jan Arvan (The 'Head' of the Household) played a waiter in Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy in 1955 and a gypsy on “The Munsters” ten years later.  From 1953 to 1971 he was a regular on “The Red Skelton Show” on CBS, often playing Klem Kadiddlehopper's father.  This is his only appearance with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
Sid Haig (The Mummy) was first employed by Desilu in a 1962 episode of “The Untouchables.” This “Lucy Show” marks his fourth of more than 140 screen credits. He was also seen in a 1969 episode of “Here’s Lucy.”  Haig appeared in the horror re-boots Night of the Living Dead 3D (2006) and Halloween (2007).
Tumblr media
James Gonzales (Morris, the Chair) was a popular Hollywood extra who first acted with Lucille Ball in the 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer. He was previously seen on the series as Stan Williams in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (S1;E2). He was seen in more than 20 episodes of “The Lucy Show” and 3 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
The character name puns on the Morris Chair, an early type of reclining chair by Morris & Company first marketed around 1866. Gonzales is completely concealed by the chair costume and does not speak.
Tumblr media
Shepard Sanders (Costume Party Count Dracula) played a psychic on an episode of the TV series “Werewolf” in 1987. This is his only appearance with Lucille Ball.
Several other costumed party-goers appear uncredited in the final scene, but do not speak. They may have been played by the other ‘monsters’ in Lucy’s dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Series Camera Coordinator Maury Thompson (above left) and assistant director / associate producer Tommy Thompson (above right) came up with the premise for this episode and receive screen credit for the story.
Tumblr media
The episode opens with Lucy reading a magazine article titled “Psychological Reactions in Adolescents to Terror-Inspiring Visual Stimulation”:
“The over-abundance of spooky stuff in movies and TV can cause traumatic experience in our youngsters.”
Tumblr media
Lucy reports that Jerry and Sherman are at the State Theater to see the double-feature The Surfing Werewolf and The Eggplant That Ate Philadelphia. Both of these are fictional films. This is the first mention of the State movie theatre. The Bijou and The Danfield Theatre were both mentioned in “No More Double Dates” S1;E21).
Tumblr media
The title The Eggplant That Ate Philadelphia may have been inspired by the 1960 low-budget comedy / horror film The Little Shop of Horrors, about a mysterious eggplant-shaped plant that thrives on human blood and could be an alien sent to conquer earth. One of the film’s stars, Jackie Joseph, was married to Lucille Ball protégé Ken Berry and would appear on “Here’s Lucy” (using her married named) in 1969.
Tumblr media
Jerry wears a black cape and Sherman wears a Frankenstein mask. Other than this visual image, the Frankenstein monster is not mentioned or depicted in the dream. Frankenstein and Dracula were already represented on CBS by “The Munsters” (1964-66) on Thursday nights. The series imagined the Universal monsters in a family-based sitcom similar to “Father Knows Best.”
Tumblr media
Jerry (and later Lucy) use a Remco “Signal Action Ray Space Gun”. Starting in the 1950s, Remco made many variations on this gun, including different colors. It is likely that the electronic sound heard on the soundtrack was added in post-production.
The mothers resolve to check out these movies for themselves.
VIV: “I haven’t seen a movie with a monster since Gone With The Wind.” LUCY: “There was no monster in Gone With The Wind.” VIV: “You didn’t see my date!”
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara during the 1939 film's initial casting. The role eventually went to British actress Vivian Leigh (right). The cinema classic will be mentioned several times throughout the series and on “Here’s Lucy.”
Gale Gordon gets a smattering of entrance applause from the studio audience.  Mr. Mooney jokingly hums a few bars of “Funeral March” to scare Lucy and Viv. Frédéric Chopin's composition is formally known as Piano Sonata No. 2 in B Flat Minor, Opus 35 and was completed in 1839.
Mr. Mooney mentions his wife, but not by name. Vivian mentions her husband, but also does not use his name. In other episodes, we discover they are named Irma and Ralph, respectively. Both characters remain unseen throughout the series.
Tumblr media
Throwing his coat over his shoulders like a cape, Mr. Mooney says
“It isn't a fit night out for man nor beast!”
This is a paraphrase of a quote spoken by W.C. Fields in the 1933 film short The Fatal Glass of Beer, which was NOT a horror movie! More beastly wordplay happens later when Dracula (Mr. Mooney) turns the expression “Heavens to Betsy” into “Heavens to Beastie”!
Tumblr media
This is only the second time a scene has taken place in Lucy's bedroom. The first was in “Lucy Buys a Sheep” (S1;E5).
Tumblr media
Lucy protects herself from monsters by wearing a garlic necklace (to ward off evil spirits) and holding one of Jerry's wooden tent stakes (the only way to kill a vampire). Both of these tactics are part of the vampire mythology as set forth in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula.
Tumblr media
The monster characters featured are mostly from the Universal Studios pantheon of monsters: Dracula (1931), The Mummy (1932) and The Wolf Man (1941). Background player Monty O'Grady was a villager in The Wolf Man and later appeared in 14 episodes of “The Lucy Show” and 6 episodes of “Here's Lucy.”  One of Universal's most famous monsters was The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), played by Elsa Lanchester. Lanchester guest-starred as a possible hatchet murderess on “Off To Florida” (ILL S6;E6) and as a hardened criminal in “Lucy Goes To Prison,” a 1973 episode of “Here's Lucy.” The Bride of Frankenstein is also mentioned in “Lucy Writes a Play” (ILL S1;E17). Universal Studios theme parks in Hollywood and Florida later hosted a Lucille Ball exhibit, also selling collectible merchandise and souvenirs.
Tumblr media
Count Dracula (Mr. Mooney) calls his werewolf butler by the name 'Ringo.' This is a joke about Ringo Starr of the Beatles, a popular singing group known for their long and shaggy hairstyles. The Beatles have been mentioned several times on “The Lucy Show.” 1965 saw the release of their motion picture Help!
Tumblr media
When Lucy and Viv are transformed into witches, they quote the Weird Sisters from William Shakespeare's MacBeth:
“Double double, toil and trouble. Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.”
Tumblr media
To find out who is the prettiest witch, Lucy and Viv ask the magic mirror by saying “Mirror, mirror on the wall; Who's the fairest of them all?” This is the same query the Evil Queen asks her magic mirror in the 1937 animated Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. In the original Brothers Grimm story that the film is based upon, however, the question posed is “Who is the most beautiful in all the land?”
In the dream sequence, witch Lucy calls witch Viv 'Sassafrassa.' This is actually the name Lucille Ball gave an imaginary childhood friend who assured her she would one day be a movie star. Once she moved  from Jamestown to nearby Celoron, Lucy would often call her best friend Pauline Lopus 'Pauline Sassafrassa.' Other sources say Lucille Ball imagined herself to be a famous film star named 'Sassafrassa.'
Tumblr media
A mouse also scares Lucy and Viv in “Vivian Sues Lucy” (S1;E10). That episode also features an insert shot of a live mouse. Women being afraid of mice was a typical TV trope of the time.
Tumblr media
When the Mummy tries to help strap Lucy to the operating table, she snaps and says “Please, Mummy! I’d rather do it myself!” The studio audience reacts with a big laugh of recognition. Here’s why…
youtube
In 1962, an advertisement for Anacin pain reliever featured a mother trying to assist her grown daughter prepare a meal. “Don’t you think it needs a little salt?”, the mother would say, only to have her nerve-racked daughter shout, “Mother, please, I’d rather do it myself!" Variations on this scenario became popular and were parodied a number of times, including in the Allan Sherman song "Headaches” (”Mother, don't hand me those pills from the shelf, I’d rather do it myself”), the 1966 film The Silencers, and the 1980 film Airplane.
Tumblr media
A year and a day after this “Lucy Show” episode, “My Mother The Car” (starring Lucy’s pal Ann Sothern) aired an episode titled “I’d Rather Do It Myself, Mother” (S1;E20). Coincidentally, the show’s music was by Ralph Carmichael, a real-life combination of VIv’s ex-husband’s first name, and Lucy’s last name!
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
Two years earlier, in the first frame of the June 1963 “The Lucy Show” Gold Key comic book, Viv also feared monsters!  And shaggy dogs, apparently! Ironically, a shaggy dog was featured in the very first episode of “The Lucy Show”.
Tumblr media
This is the first time there has been a 'dream sequence' on “The Lucy Show.” In “Ricky's Old Girlfriend” (ILL S3;E12) Lucy dreams of what life would be like without Ricky if he left her for Carlotta Romero, a sexy Cuban dancer. The dream takes her 25 years into the future.
Tumblr media
The most famous dream sequence on “I Love Lucy” was “Lucy Goes To Scotland” (ILL S5;E17) where Lucy Ricardo imagines re-visiting her relatives in Scotland, but dreams in the musical comedy format. Except for the brief opening and closing scenes, the entire episode is comprised of a dream.
Tumblr media
The witch voice Lucy uses is very similar to the one she used as the witch in “Little Ricky’s School Pageant” (ILL S6;E10) with a hint of Camille, the Queen of the Gypsies in “The Operetta” (ILL S2;E5).
Tumblr media
When witch Lucy and witch Viv try to flee Dracula's castle, the escape turns into an impromptu square dance, with the Head as the caller. This is similar to the impromptu escape that helps the Ricardos and the Mertzes get out of Bent Fork in “Tennessee Bound” (ILL S4;E14). In that episode, Ernie Ford was the caller.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo disguised herself as an armchair when spying on the “New Neighbors” (ILL S1;E21). Like the Morris chair in this episode, Lucy's arms also were the arms of the chair.
Fast Forward!
Tumblr media
In a 1970 episode of “Here’s Lucy,” Lucy Carter met the Crown Prince of Horror, Vincent Price.
Tumblr media
Trying to flee Count Dracula’s mansion, Lucy and Viv search for a secret passageway in the fireplace, touching all the stones, just like Lucy Carter did when trying to find Mumsie Westcott’s loot in “Lucy Goes To Prison” (HL S5;E18).
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Calendar Conundrum!  This would have made a fun Halloween episode, but instead it inexplicably airs for the first time in January.
Sitcom Logic Alert!  Mr. Mooney drops by the Carmichael home on the premise of hand-delivering Lucy’s bank statement. As usual, he leaves the door wide open for the duration of his scene.
Sitter Situation! Lucy and Viv recruit Mr. Mooney to 'babysit’ with Jerry and Sherman, but it is not clear why Chris (now in her late teens) cannot watch them or even where she might be.
Tumblr media
Whose Bed Is It Anyway? Although they are supposedly sleeping in Lucy’s bedroom, the bed frame and the painting above the bed are the same ones seen in Viv’s bedroom in previous episodes.
Tumblr media
Layout Logic! Lucy’s bedroom in “Lucy Buys a Sheep” (S1;E5) has a completely different layout than this one. The rocking chair and the white wood dresser, however, are the same.
On / Off! In the bedroom, as Viv reaches for the switch, Lucy yells for her not to turn off the lights but the light switch is already in the 'off’ position.
Made For TV Garlic! When Lucy shakes her garlic necklace to ward off the evil spirits, the hollow sound it makes indicates that they are fabricated cloves and not real garlic.
Tumblr media
Quick Thinking Viv! When the telephone booth door is flung open to reveal the skeleton, it immediately starts to swing shut again, but Viv quickly grabs it with her right hand and holds it open so the skeleton can be seen on camera and by the studio audience, thus neatly avoiding a re-take.
Tumblr media
Ouch!  Backing out of the fireplace, Vivian Vance bumps her head on the mantle. She doesn’t react vocally, but does grab her head when it happens. The ‘Head’ sees the entire incident.
Tumblr media
Check the Gate for Crew! When Lucy and Viv are strapped to a table so Dracula can turn them into witches, the screen fades to black for the commercial break and the head of a crew member prominently enters the camera frame on the right. Unfortunately, the newest DVD release did not eliminate this goof by cropping the frame, as they have done with other bloopers. This same mistake also happened on “I Love Lucy.”
Soggy Bottom! When the potted plant spits up the year-old tea, the spray lands on the tan sofa, making a large wet mark where Viv (dressed in pajamas) is supposed to sit. She scoots over a bit to avoid the wet patch. The sofa stays wet for the rest of the episode. When the magic mirror comes crashing down to the floor rather than saying who is the fairest in the land, Lucy or Viv, part of the Styrofoam wall behind it also caves in!
Tumblr media
Mirror, Mirror on the Floor! When the magic mirror comes crashing down to the floor part of the Styrofoam wall behind it also caves in!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Monsters” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5

New Post has been published on http://www.restoreamericanglory.com/breaking-news/democrat-jerry-nadler-rejects-calling-the-bidens-for-impeachment-trial/
Democrat Jerry Nadler Rejects Calling the Bidens for Impeachment Trial
Last week, Sen. Ted Cruz came up with a brilliant proposition. If Democrats were so desperate to call all-new witnesses for the impeachment trial, then perhaps they could be accommodated by a “witness reciprocity” deal: For every witness Democrats call, Republicans get one of their own. In other words, if Democrats want to call John Bolton, that’s fine. Republicans will call Hunter Biden. If they want to call Mick Mulvaney, so be it. Republicans will call Joe Biden. In an impeachment process that has been characterized by partisan nonsense, this was one of the fairest propositions we’ve heard.
Naturally, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), one of the House’s impeachment managers, has rejected the deal out of hand.
“Is there any circumstance in which Democrats would consider, for reciprocity, having Hunter Biden come and testify?” asked CBS Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan.
“You know, the question of witnesses in any trial, in any trial, all relevant witnesses must be heard,” Nadler replied. “Whether if- if you’re accused of robbing a bank, testimony that I saw him rob the bank or he was somewhere else, he couldn’t have robbed the bank, is admissible. It’s not negotiable whether you have witnesses. And this whole controversy about whether there should be witnesses is really a question of does the Senate want to have a fair trial or are they part of the cover up of the president? Any Republican senator who says there should be no witnesses or even that witnesses should be negotiated is part of the cover up.”
Pause the tape for a second. Focus on the way Democrats want this trial both ways. On the one hand, they argue that there’s no constitutional reason for them to accuse President Donald Trump of a crime. Okay, fine. But you can’t fail to meet that minimal bar and simultaneously pretend that this is a criminal trial. What possible sense does that make? The articles of impeachment are wholly partisan, and the House impeachment process was wholly partisan. But now that it’s in the Senate, House Democrats want to flip the script and start doing things by the book. Jerry, no one is falling for this.
“So, you’re saying no way would Hunter Biden ever be called to testify?” Brennan asked.
“Well, I’m saying that Hunter Biden has no knowledge of the accusations against the president,” Nadler said. “Did the president, as we said- as the evidence shows that he did, betray his country by conspiring with a foreign country to- to try to rig the election? Hunter Biden has nothing to say about that.”
This is the kind of weaselly reply that is technically correct while also far afield from the point. If Hunter Biden and his father are guilty of wrongdoing, then Trump did not betray his country. He protected his country by refusing to give military aid to a nation that is rife with corruption. Indeed, that IS what he did, irrespective of whether or not the Bidens are actually guilty of anything sinister. But the testimony of Hunter Biden could certainly help clarify it for even the dumbest people in the Senate.
Bafflingly, Nadler, Pelosi, and Schiff have yet to realize that they aren’t running this trial. They could have called any witness they wanted back when this process was still in the House. Instead, they chose to rush to a vote. Now they want to go back and do it all over again on Mitch McConnell’s time? Sorry, guys, it doesn’t work that way.

Most critical, is the need to come up with a list of professionals who have the capacities to offer top-quality results. Plan interviews with the said professionals in an effort to question their suitability when it comes to voice over marketing. All regions have laws that govern the way voice over marketers work. The sole purpose of the laws is to protect the interests of both parties. Important also, is to find out whether the ready and willing entities have certifications to practice. Non-certified institutions or rather, providers of such services are more likely to upset. Compare your tasks with the ones on their portfolios in terms of the budgets, constraints, and scope just to mention a few. Consider also, questioning the past employers regarding their encounters with various top service providers in the sector. Look for firms that will treat you in the fairest way possible. Remember that it can be extremely frustrating to land an ever-upsetting service provider. Question the ways through which the said experts address their customers. Again, validate their responses using the highly regarded sites that are popular for offering professionals reviews. Avoid marketers who will upset you with inferior, inaccurate, and unreliable results. The leading experts in this industry assure some level of high-quality work. FIRST DRIVE: BMW X2 M35i — Can a Crossover be a Hot Hatch?
When BMW first launched the X2, a lot of eyebrows were raised among enthusiasts. It wasn’t quite a hatchback but it wasn’t quite a crossover. It was sort of something in between; smaller than a traditional crossover but still a bit too large to be a hatchback. Then we drove it, at last year’s Test Fest, and it surprised us with its nimble handling and precise steering. Despite the heresy of it being a front-wheel drive-based ‘tweener, it was actually really enjoyable to drive. Now, BMW has taken that odd, yet surprisingly enjoyable, package and injected it with some more performance. Welcome the BMW X2 M35i.
Ironically, we had the chance to sample the new BMW X2 M35i at this year’s Test Fest, almost exactly a year after the previous one. It was the first time any enthusiasts had the chance to drive the new X2 M35i and we were surprised to see it there. Especially considering that it was on track.
As I walked out onto The Thermal Club’s south track, I noticed the oddball X2 sitting next to bonafide performance machines, such as the BMW M5 Competition, M2 Competition and M850i. It was an interesting sight to see but an exciting one. Apparently, a handful of people at BMW fought to get the X2 M35i on track, as they really believed in its abilities to impress.
What is the BMW X2 M35i?
The first M Performance version of the X2, the M35i version is faster and more exciting than the standard car. Rather than the normal car’s 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the X2 M35i gets an up-rated turbo four-pot that makes a hefty 302 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. That’s quite a lot in such a small car and it helps the funky looking X2 to get from 0-60 mph in a scant 4.9 seconds.
Mated to that punchy engine is an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels. Though, due to its Haldex-style setup, it can never send more than 50-percent of the power to the rear wheels, which is a bit unfortunate.
Don’t just think it’s a standard X2 with a bigger engine, though. For the first time ever in a BMW, it packs a Torsen-based limited-slip differential, integrated into the gearbox, helping to better distribute the power to the front axle. It also gets a 10mm lowered ride height, stiffer springs and dampers and even a quicker steering rack. Its rear suspension, including its axle carrier and rear control arms, have been revised, to allow for better rear-end grip.
It’s a pretty comprehensively revised package, making it a true performance variant and not just a regular X2 with some flashy bits. While it does have some extra flashy bits, on both the outside and inside, I won’t comment too much on them as I didn’t have much time to poke around the interior. It was more of a buckle-up-and-go kind of day on the track.
Can a Front-Wheel Drive-Based Crossover Handle Track Duty?
Unfortunately, I first stepped into the BMW X2 M35i only a handful of minutes after having done a few laps in the M850i. So maybe it wasn’t the best first impression. After being in the 8er, the X2 M35i felt like a rental car on the inside. Though, that’s more praise for the M850i than an indictment of the X2. Still, it probably wasn’t a great follow up, as it’d be like trying to go on stage after Jerry Seinfeld; even if you’re good, the crowd is going to notice a drop-off in quality.
Pulling out onto the back straight, the BMW X2 M35i is surprisingly quick. Obviously, it felt considerably slower than the downright explosive M850i but that’s not to say the X2 M35i isn’t fast. In fact, after a couple of laps, I really started to appreciate its engine. The upgraded turbo-four is a little cracker, with a raucous exhaust note and ample power for the X2. Its eight-speed gearbox also handles swapping cogs surprisingly well. Though, it must be said that spirited driving will almost need to be done with paddle shifters, as the gearbox isn’t as clever as its ZF-sourced sibling when it’s left to its own devices.
Steering is accurate, too, though it’s rack is not nearly as quick as the other cars we drove that day. Turn-in requires a decent amount of lock and its lighter on steering feedback than I’d like. It’s not bad, it’s just not stellar. Again, I drove it after the M850i, so maybe it’s not the fairest of reviews. Having said that, after a few laps, I did acclimate to the little X2 and find a rhythm.
However, there are some objective reasons as to why the BMW X2 M35i isn’t the best of track machines. Its brakes are just not up to the task of heavy track use, regardless of the “M” badge on their calipers. Pedal feel is squishy at the top and it doesn’t bite hard until halfway through the travel. So when you’re flogging it, it’s hard to trust the brakes.
There’s also a fair bit of understeer, more so than I had anticipated. Credit that to the fact that to its all-wheel drive setup which can’t send more than 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels. Having said that, if you can manage the understeer, that new front diff does allow the M35i to put its power down earlier and completely eliminate torque steer. In fact, on-power corner exit is far better than I had expected. But you have to fight that understeer first.
Better as a Street Car, Then?
While BMW was optimistic and put the X2 M35i on track, I’m not sure it’s a good track car. In fairness, I don’t think BMW believes it’s a track car but wanted to show off that it was more impressive than people might think. And it is. However, no actual BMW X2 M35i owners will take their cars to the track and that’s probably for the best.
It should be a little fire-cracker of a daily driver, though. While BMW had cars to test on the road, I didn’t get a chance to do so. Even still, I can tell that it will be a great little road car and a really good daily driver.
Last year, I drove the standard BMW X2 on the road and was really impressed with it. Now, I’ve driven the hot version on track and I can sort of put the two experiences together to understand that this new BMW X2 M35i will be a great everyday driver. It’s spacious enough for either a very young family or a single person with a relatively active lifestyle. It also looks cool enough to stand out from the sea of boring crossovers, while boasting an interior that’s both comfortable and sporty looking.
But what will make the X2 M35i a great daily is the fact that its performance is perfectly suited for road use. It’s punchy and fast but not absurdly so, you can actually use a lot of its power on the road without getting into lose-your-license territory. It’s also sharp and dynamic enough to make the daily commute fun, especially if there’s some twisty roads along the way.
We’ll have to get one to test at home before we can make a proper assessment but I can already tell that the BMW X2 M35i is one of the better all-around performance packages for the road. It’s also the closest we’re going to get to a hot-hatch from BMW in America.

Snow White Adaptation Essey
In this essay, I will discuss how I would adapt a well-known story. The story I will be adapting is the well-known classic tale of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. The original story was published in a German book, in 1812, called ‘Grimms' Fairy Tales’ which is a book that contains 209 different tales, by Jacob and Wilhem Grimm. In the Book, ‘Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs’ also has title of ‘Little Snow White’.
I will do this first by briefly describing the original story, followed by other adaptations and finally discussing my own adaptation and the reasons behind this adaptation. The essay will now move on to describe the original story.
The Queen, asks her magic mirror who is the most beautiful person in the land. When her step daughter Snow White is seven years of age, the mirror tells the Queen that Snow White is the most beautiful, not her. Out of jealousy, the Queen sends a huntsman to kill her, but the Huntsman took pity on Snow White and tells her to run away. She finds a small cottage in the middle of the forest and takes refuge in it.  Seven dwarfs, who live in the cottage, return to find Snow White asleep on their bed. As she awakes, the dwarfs hear her tale, and allow her to stay as long as she takes care of them and the cottage. The Queen meanwhile finds out that Snow White is still alive and where she is. The Queen tries on three occasions to kill her, using a lace, a poison comb and finally a poisoned apple. She finally thinks she has achieved this with a poisoned apple. The dwarves were too late to save her, so they placed her in a glass coffin and laid her on a mountain. She laid there for months until a prince came by, and asked if he could take the coffin, which the dwarfs allowed. One of the prince’s men tripped and dropped the coffin, which caused the poisoned apple piece to fall out of Snow White’s mouth. She woke up moments later and fell in love with the prince and got married. They invited The Queen to the wedding, punished her by placing her in iron boots, and made her dance over burning coal until she died.
In my adaptation, I would like to keep the same moralistic ethos of the original story.  I do find the original text of Snow White enjoyable, but it could be considered disturbing that the Queen is jealous of a seven-year-old girl. It does make the Queen appear as more evil and bitter.  In a contemporary adaptation it may be more fitting if Snow White was around the age of twenty, or at least eighteen. Although the story does have some good morals in it. It teaches that it is bad to have arrogance over one selves own beauty. Because of the Queen’s obsession over her own looks, she cannot stand the fact that there is somebody else more beautiful than she is. In the end, her own vanity gets her killed. The story also teaches not to trust strangers, because Snow White is nearly killed three times because she falls for the Queen’s three disguises. In regards to beauty, the story also discusses that real beauty comes from within. Although the Queen may be beautiful on the outside, she is nothing but cruel and egotistic, but Snow White is quite the opposite, being sweet and caring. Meaning Snow White is both beautiful on the inside and out, making her the fairest in the land, because the Queen could never be as kind and gentle as Snow White.
On December 21st 1937, the first animated feature- length film came out in America based on the Brothers Grimm classic story of ‘Little Snow White’ called ‘Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs’. The film was adapted by ‘Walt Disney Studios’. The film started production in 1935. Everyone thought that the film would not appeal to an adult audience, but the film was proven to be successful across all ages.
“Over at our place we’re sure of just one thing, everyone in the world was once a child. So in planning a new picture, we don’t think of grown-ups or children, but just of that kind, clean, unspoiled spot down deep in every one of us that the world has maybe made us forget and maybe our pictures can help recall”.  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7-QaPlTd-M (13/11/17 20:28)
The film is extremely loyal to the book it is based on, but with a few additions. One of the more noticeable changes is there is less gore and violence, the original had the Queen eating  lungs and liver believing they were Snow White’s, the original even had Snow White being strangled to near death by the Queen. Disney made the film more family friendly, for everyone to enjoy. Disney also gave personalities to the seven dwarfs, even giving them individual names that fit their personalities. This was one of the things that was missing from the book, because giving characters’ strong personalities makes the viewer relate more to the situation.
However, ‘Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs’ was only the second adaptation of ‘Little Snow White’. The first was made in 1933 starring Betty Boop, and the entire short was animated by one man, Roland C. Crandall. The film also features a song by Cab Callowey ‘St. James infirmary’, sung by Koko the Clown. A book made in 1994 by a man named Jerry Beck (an Animation Historian) wrote a book called ‘The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected by 1,000 Animation Professionals’ and Betty Boop’s Snow White is one of the animated shorts in the book.
Unlike Disney’s adaptation of Snow white, the short does not follow the book very closely. The Queen is still very egotistical over her own looks and gets jealous over somebody else’s beauty, in this version that person was Betty Boop instead of Snow White. The seven dwarfs have no actual relevance in this version, other than carrying Betty Boop’s coffin. Just like any other Betty Boop cartoons it is strange, but enjoyable to watch. Although it is not very loyal to the book, it is easy to recognise what story the short is based on. It keeps the most important aspects from the book to make it recognisable, such as the Queen’s jealousy and the magic mirror. This shows that an adaptation does not need to follow ever idea or plot twists to the letter from the original source it is being based on. The adaptation just needs to follow the basic lines and ideals of the original (with maybe some updated morals) so that it does not lose that essential idea of what made the original what it was.
“Use the original story as character history/backstory so the parallels are interesting but you don’t have to follow it to the letter” - http://www.damyantiwrites.com/2012/01/04/adapting-famous-stories-fiction/ (28/11/17 14:23)
For my own adaptation of Snow White, I will be basing the whole story in the American 19th century, also known as the ‘wild west’.  I will be mostly keeping to the original story, but changing many of the character job titles to fit in with the environment I have set them in. The Queen will be the owner of the brothel where Snow White works and will have the title of The Madam to suit her job. This will still give her a strong sense of power. Unlike other adaptation of Snow White, where the Queen is beautiful, The Madam will be a much older and fatter woman who is not as fair as she once was in her youth. This will make The Madam have more of a reason to be jealous towards Snow White, making her feel more bitter because she is not as attractive as she once was. Snow White will be one of the prostitutes that will be working at The Madam’s brothel; this will give a reason as to why Snow White looks up towards the Madam and trusts her. Just as with other versions of Snow White, Snow White will be a very sweet and gentle character. She will be much older compared to the original text where she is seven, Snow white will be approximately the age of twenty, because as I stated before, making The Queen jealous of a seven-year old’s beauty is a rather disturbing thought, but in this adaptation The Madam will be more jealous of the fact that she is no longer as beautiful as she once was. Very similar to Disney adaptation, the seven dwarfs will be Gold miner, because during the 19th century America had the gold rush. They will also no longer be dwarfs in keeping with the more realistic setting. The huntsman will also change to the town sheriff, which will reflect the character’s inner conflict to kill Snow White as he is supposed to be a symbol of justice. The prince will be the son of a rich connoisseur, so that he has some form of power and Snow White gets everything she deserves by marrying a man with money.
Since this adaptation will take a bit more of a realistic take on the tale, all factors of magic will be removed. So instead of The Madam talking to a magic mirror, she will be talking to a mirror, whilst she is drunk, with a reflection of her younger self telling The Madam that people would notice her more if Snow White Was no longer around. This will show that the madam has not let go of the past and wishes that she was still young. She will also find out that Snow White is still alive hearing rumours around the town about seeing Snow White near the miners. So The Madam persuades the town sheriff for more details about the situation at hand.  The message of “do not trust others” will slightly change in this adaptation. Since Snow White has some trust towards The Madam, instead of The Madam changing into a disguise to trick Snow White, she goes to the cottage where Snow White is, as herself, to apologise for the misunderstanding. This will be adapting the original meaning of “not to trust strangers”, to being careful of who you trust in general since not everyone is who they appear to be. This also means that The Madam will not make three attempts to try and kill Snow White, as in the original, as I feel the scene would lose all meaning of its message after the first attempt, and drag itself out too much.
The fate of The Madam won’t be as cruel as it was in the text, having the Queen being punished by dancing over hot coal until death. That ending seems a bit too dark for a contemporary children’s story, it even makes Snow White come off as a bit of a cruel person, even though she is supposed to be kind and forgiving person. Very similar to Disney’s Snow White, The Madam will be chased away by the miners. She will run away into the middle of the dessert, having escaped the miners, but then she will realise that she is completely lost in the middle of nowhere, miles away from any town or civilisation.
Here is a small part of a script I have written. The scene takes place where The Madam is jealous over how everyone talks about how beautiful Snow White is. She is in her room drunk and complaining about Snow White and then starts to hear a familiar voice.
SCENE 5.INT.THE MADAMS BED ROOM. EVENING.
The room is dark, with all the curtains closed. There is a mirror on the wall. On the other side of the room there is a fire place, with the fire still lit.
The door bursts open, the Madam comes stumbling in, drunk, holding an almost empty bottle whisky.
THE MADAM
(Spitefully, sarcastically)
Snow White... Beautiful…
She spits on the floor
THE MADAM
How is she beautiful? when of course I am the fairest!
She walks towards the mirror, places the bottle on her dressing table and looks at her own reflection. The image of herself fades into a much younger and beautiful version of herself.
 THE MADAM
They don't even know what they are missing out on
The Madam strokes her hair back, admiring her own beauty.
 THE MADAM
I'll always be the most beautiful
she turns away from the mirror and starts walking away, but stops as she hears a young voice coming from behind her
 THE MADAM (REFLECTION)
It's true, you were once the most beautiful woman any man had ever seen
The Madam turns around to see a younger reflection of herself is talking from within the mirror
For the art direction, the adaptation will follow very similarly to Don Bluth’s art style. Having a realistic appearance, but not having it so detailed that the characters are disturbing to look at. Just like Don Bluth’s films, the film will be aimed at children but will have a dark turns to it. Since the story is simple and straight forward, like the original text, it will be easy for young children to understand, but it will keep some of the violence from the original, because showing children some slight dark imagery can help them learn morals quicker than being told not to do stuff, but also making the film a little dark, with some good humour, will make it appealing for older audiences to enjoy as well.
“[If] you don’t show the darkness, you don’t appreciate the light. If it weren’t for December no one would appreciate May. It’s just important that you see both sides of that. As far as a happy ending…when you walk out of the theatre there’s [got to be] something that you have that you get to take home. What did it teach me? Am I a better person for having watched it?” - https://filmschoolrejects.com/the-melancholy-of-don-bluth-1be72847b858/ (23/11/2017 14:38)

Animation, scenes and location week one.
In this task I was asked to find 4 wide shots and 4 small shots from animations and cartoons, I chose to do 2 cartoon wide shots, 3 animation wide shots, 2 cartoon small shots and 2 animation small shots, so I have done 1 extra but that was due to me liking the backgrounds equally for different reasons.
2 cartoon wide shots;
Tumblr media
This background is from Bugs Bunny (1940)
Bugs Bunny is a character from 1940 created by Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Ben Hardawayand Robert McKimson. Bugs Bunny has had several spin offs such as The loony tunes show in 2011 and was even in a movie called Space Jam which was very popular in 1996.
This scene is obviously western themed where Bugs is well known in this area with Yosemite Sam being his rival who he Bugs tends to always beat.
Tumblr media
This background is from South Park (1997)
South Park was created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone which is based around 4 children living their lives in a town called south park with some offensive humour
This background is used to show the town of south park and appears nearly at the start of every episode.
3 animation wide shots;
Tumblr media
This background is from Spirited away (2003)
Spirited away was created by Hayao Miyazaki which is about a girl called Chihiro who travels from the human world to the spirit world where she has to find a job to be able to stay, her quest is to find her parents and turn them from pigs back into humans.
This scene is where the main character is on a train to help her friend Haku who is her friend get rid of a curse.
Tumblr media
This background is from Zootopia (Zootropolis in the Europe) (2016)
Zootopia was created by Rich Moore and Byron Howard which is a buddy cop movie where the main characters Nick and Judy solve the case of predator animals going back to their “primitive savage ways” where they disrupt the rest of the city which is 90% prey.
This image is where one of the main characters called Judy is entering Zootopia for the first time on the train where she has been dreaming of becoming a cop since she was young.
Tumblr media
This background is from Oliver and company (1989)
Oliver and company is based off the famous book called Oliver Twist where in this story the orphan is a cat who becomes friends with other animals of New York.
This image is from the very start of the movie where the location is first being revealed as New York City.
2 cartoon small shots;
Tumblr media
This background is from Tom and Jerry (1940)
Tom and Jerry was created by Joseph Barbera where a cat called Tom tries to catch a mouse called Jerry, however Tom is always outsmarted by the mouse in comedic ways in a slapstick manner.
This image at the start of the short where the setting is being revealed of where Tom and Jerry will have their comedic “battle”
Tumblr media
This background is from Bugs Bunny (1940)
This image is from inside a bar where Bugs Bunny goes to buy carrot juice.
2 animation small shots;
Tumblr media
This background is from Snow White and the 7 dwarfs (1937)
Snow White was the first fully animated film which was released by Disney, which is about a woman called Snow White who meets 7 dwarfs who become friends where she teaches them how to be more civil to one another whilst a wicked witch is jealous of Snow White due to her being the fairest in the land which the witch wants to be.
This image is where Snow White’s house is being revealed to show the audience what kind of person she is.
Tumblr media
This background is from Atlantis the lost empire (2001)
Atlantis the lost empire was created by Walt Disney animation studios where the main character called Milo who serves as linguist and cartography expert of the expedition to find the lost continent of Atlantis becomes friends with a citizen of Atlantis who teaches her how to read Atlantis to discover secrets of the lost empire.
In this image Milo and the crew are approaching Atlantis under the sea in vehicles where there is air.

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
Welcome to FiveThirtyEight’s weekly politics chat. The transcript below has been lightly edited.
micah (Micah Cohen, politics editor): Today’s topic: If you’re a Republican elected official, what qualifies you as anti-Trump?
Why are we talking about this? Well, there are plenty of GOP senators — Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, John McCain, Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, etc. — who have been critical of the president but haven’t necessarily done much about it legislatively. So many people on the left call the whole narrative that they’re standing up to Trump BS.
So, to start us off: How much do you think these elected Republicans are doing to restrain Trump?
natesilver (Nate Silver, editor in chief): Well, they weren’t doing very much at first. Then more signs of resistance emerged over the summer.
In some ways, we’re still waiting for the pivotal tests, though.
What if Trump fires special counsel Bob Mueller, who’s investigating his campaign and potential Russian collusion? What if he pardons Jared Kushner? What if he tries to appoint to his Cabinet someone who’s an obvious hack?
perry (Perry Bacon Jr., senior writer): The Russia sanctions bill was significant in that Congress passed it despite administration objections. The hearing with fired FBI Director James Comey was too. So was prominent GOP senators basically all-but-ordering the president not to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Republicans, particularly in the Senate, are doing more to resist Trump than the liberal conventional wisdom seems to hold.
harry (Harry Enten, senior political writer): Yeah, you are seeing some more outward signs of resistance. You have both Flake and Corker not running for re-election in order, it seems, to be able to critique Trump to their fullest ability. And just this week, McCain put out this tweet:
I believe in Americans and the American dream, but it’s time we wake up. http://pic.twitter.com/QmSIqP0TEs
— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) October 30, 2017
Now, do those count? Otherwise, I think the Russia bill was the first step, so I concur with Mr. Bacon.
natesilver: Wait — so Flake and Corker not running for re-election is a sign of resistance?
Not sure I buy that, Enten.
harry: I see it that way. Here’s why: Yes, they didn’t run, probably in part because they thought they might lose. That’s especially the case for Flake. But they could have decided to change course. They could have sucked up to Trump. Instead, they chose not to run and to criticize the president.
perry: If you think Trump will go down as the worst president in modern U.S. history and that he breaks lots of important norms along the way, then they are still not doing nearly enough. If you grade them based on their deep desire to 1. get re-elected, 2. please the Fox News base, and 3. get tax cuts and conservative judges, then the level of resistance in the GOP that we’re seeing seems more significant, with Collins/Corker/Flake/McCain at the more resisting end of the spectrum.
harry: I wonder if any of them think Trump is the worst president.
natesilver: Well, Flake was probably going to lose anyway. But Corker is popular enough that he could have stayed in the Senate as a sort of Susan Collins type.
harry: Corker’s numbers slid. I’m not sure he would have won necessarily if he really wanted to critique Trump.
micah: Yeah, isn’t the idea that he would have become far more unpopular by speaking out against Trump?
perry: I think many of these Republican senators believe Trump is uniquely terrible. That is what Flake and Corker are getting at: Let’s use our inside voices outside. If he is terrible, let’s tell people.
natesilver: Corker might have lost. But now you’re almost guaranteed to have someone more Trump-friendly in that Senate seat.
micah: So much of this comes down to how big of a threat you think the president is, right? If you’re on the left and you see Trump as a clear and present danger, then of course you’d be underwhelmed by the anti-Trumpiness of the GOP.
perry: Right.
micah: But let me introduce another element here …
THE FIVETHIRTYEIGHT TRUMP SCORE!!!!
Nate, can you give the people a snappy description of what this is?
natesilver: It’s how often a member of Congress votes the way that Trump wants.
That’s it. It’s pretty simple. It’s a measure of roll-call votes.
micah: So people have been throwing around Flake’s and McCain’s and Corker’s Trump scores — which are all very high — as evidence that their criticism of Trump is hollow.
That seems silly to me, but what do you all think?
natesilver: It’s certainly possible that you could agree with Trump on his legislative priorities but also think he’s a danger to the Republic. In that case, you might have a high Trump score, since most of what’s reflected in it is legislation.
harry: Can I just note that there’s nothing new about measures like the Trump score? People have been tracking stuff like this for years. What’s different here is that we’re doing it in real time. It’s more about the interpretation that some people are taking.
natesilver: Yeah. We’re doing it in real time. And our scores are more transparent — it’s more obvious what they mean.
perry: Micah and I have had this debate a lot internally. So we can have it publicly now.
I appreciate the work of my colleagues in creating this tool. And it explains some things really well. But I see these liberals saying, “Well, Trump is with Flake 90 percent of the time.” Flake wrote a book trashing Trump. Trump wanted Flake out of the Senate. Something is not being captured there.
And the other challenge is that Trump is often very disengaged from the legislative process. So the things that get voted on are really the Paul Ryan-Mitch McConnell priorities, or put differently, the Koch brothers agenda. I know why we are calling it a Trump score, but I at times worry that that communicates to the audience that Trump has defined priorities on a lot of legislation, some of which I doubt he knows exist.
natesilver: I don’t know. It’s a tool. Like any tool, it can be misused.
micah: But Perry has outlined the fairest criticism.
But like … don’t the Trump scores simply show that Trump hasn’t pushed an agenda distinct from normal GOP orthodoxy?
perry: Right.
I think people are misusing/misunderstanding the tool.
micah: We could rename it the “GOP Congress-Trump Legislative Agreement Score.”
natesilver: I mean, the scores show that the Republican agenda and the Trump agenda have become pretty well aligned.
The lowest Trump score among Republicans (Collins at 81 percent) is much higher than the highest Trump score among Democrats (Joe Manchin at 54 percent).
harry: Also, the Republican senators with the lowest Trump scores aren’t surprising; they tend to be the senators widely recognized as the most anti-Trump: Collins, Rand Paul, McCain, Corker, etc.
natesilver: Yeah, it does a pretty decent job.
GOP senators by Trump score
SENATOR STATE TRUMP SCORE 1 Roy Blunt Missouri 96.2% 2 John Boozman Arkansas 96.2 3 Bill Cassidy Louisiana 96.2 4 Thad Cochran Mississippi 96.2 5 John Cornyn Texas 96.2 6 Orrin Hatch Utah 96.2 7 John Hoeven North Dakota 96.2 8 Pat Roberts Kansas 96.2 9 Mike Rounds South Dakota 96.2 10 John Thune South Dakota 96.2 11 Thom Tillis North Carolina 96.2 12 Roger Wicker Mississippi 96.2 13 Richard Burr North Carolina 96.1 14 Mitch McConnell Kentucky 96.1 15 Marco Rubio Florida 96.1 16 Dan Sullivan Alaska 95.9 17 Johnny Isakson Georgia 94.4 18 John Barrasso Wyoming 94.2 19 Ted Cruz Texas 94.2 20 Cory Gardner Colorado 94.2 21 James Inhofe Oklahoma 94.2 22 Tim Scott South Carolina 94.2 23 Richard Shelby Alabama 94.2 24 Shelley Moore Capito West Virginia 94.1 25 Jerry Moran Kansas 94.1 26 David Perdue Georgia 94.1 27 Lamar Alexander Tennessee 94.0 28 Tom Cotton Arkansas 92.3 29 Mike Crapo Idaho 92.3 30 Steve Daines Montana 92.3 31 Mike Enzi Wyoming 92.3 32 Joni Ernst Iowa 92.3 33 Deb Fischer Nebraska 92.3 34 Chuck Grassley Iowa 92.3 35 Ron Johnson Wisconsin 92.3 36 John Kennedy Louisiana 92.3 37 James Lankford Oklahoma 92.3 38 Rob Portman Ohio 92.3 39 Todd Young Indiana 92.3 40 Dean Heller Nevada 90.4 41 Mike Lee Utah 90.4 42 James Risch Idaho 90.4 43 Ben Sasse Nebraska 90.2 44 Pat Toomey Pennsylvania 90.2 45 Jeff Flake Arizona 90.0 46 Luther Strange Alabama 90.0 47 Lindsey Graham South Carolina 88.5 48 Bob Corker Tennessee 86.3 49 Lisa Murkowski Alaska 86.3 50 John McCain Arizona 84.0 51 Rand Paul Kentucky 84.0 52 Susan Collins Maine 80.8
perry: Yeah, that actually is perfect in capturing the anti-Trump wing in the Senate. Although, it is strange that Luther Strange is there.
But broader point: I don’t expect someone like Flake, who is quite conservative, to vote against tax cuts because Trump supports them.
natesilver: Right, but it’s reasonable to point out that someone like Collins — despite occasionally disagreeing with Trump, including on important issues — is still quite an asset to him, compared with a Democrat from Maine.
micah: Well, this gets us back to how you judge Republican resistiness — there are people who think Trump is such a threat to the nation that Republicans should be blocking appointments/legislation even if they support them on substance. There are people who think they should switch parties! If you subscribe to that theory, then the Trump score does count as evidence that the McCains and Flakes of the world haven’t done much.
As Nate just said, Collins is still an asset overall.
natesilver: There haven’t been many appointments lately — and Trump has mostly sidestepped making controversial ones.
harry: I mean, these are still Republicans.
perry: This is an interesting question. Tom Price had a bunch of controversial behavior well before he was confirmed as health and human services secretary and well before he resigned after the plane stuff. Should Flake/Corker/McCain have not voted for him? (They did.) Would they do that today?
natesilver: That’s why I’m saying the big tests are still ahead.
harry: What are the big tests? Do we know them yet?
natesilver: Ultimately, some of the resistance will have to come in the form of roll-call votes — like rebuffing his Cabinet nominees or (gulp) even voting to impeach him.
perry: Right, but taxes is the wrong issue on which to judge GOP resistance. Nominations and appointments are right. So are U.S. attorneys, foreign policy appointments, people who could be involved in Russia stuff: Like if Secretary of State Rex Tillerson were to leave and Trump wanted to appoint an even more pro-Russia person. Or if his U.S. attorney appointment in New York seems to be someone with obvious ties to Trump who won’t prosecute crimes by Trump allies.
natesilver: Congress could pass legislation that would make it more difficult to fire Mueller. The fact that they haven’t yet is a good point for the critics.
micah: Or Congress could pass laws aimed at curbing Trump’s potential corruption/conflict of interest stuff.
perry: Yes.
harry: Of course, a number of GOP senators have also said that Trump shouldn’t fire Mueller.
perry: Like this is a serious idea: Republicans should join with Democrats to block any U.S. attorney nominee who Trump has personally met with.
And, yeah, the fact that the pro-Mueller bills have not moved is telling.
natesilver: People are also within their rights to be skeptical of Republicans standing up to Trump based on how the 2016 primaries went down. Trump, famously, received very few endorsements from Republican elected officials. But as we learned, there’s a big difference between failing to endorse and actually resisting someone.
harry: By the way, Flake has not signed onto a bill that would make it harder for Trump to fire Mueller.
micah: I think what we’re seeing is a number of Republican senators who are anti-Trump on non-policy issues (protecting Mueller/rule of law/etc.) and pro-Trump on policy (which is basically just pro-GOP). … BUT they’re active on the policy things and passive on the non-policy things.
That’s the key: active vs. passive.
natesilver: Right. There’s been an impressive amount of passive resistance to Trump and not (yet) very much active resistance.
perry: I guess it’s somewhat hard to be active on non-policy things, since Congress doesn’t really vote on those, right?
micah: Couldn’t they, though?
perry: Is active resistance politically possible in the Republican Party of today?
Politicians perhaps should do things that are political risks. But they almost never do.
micah: That’s a hard question to answer, Perry. My first instinct is “no.”
But maybe that’s simply a case of expectations.
What would happen if every Republican senator up for re-election in 2018 simultaneously came out and broke with Trump in a sustained way?
perry: Well, on Russia sanctions it happened.
He whined, signed the bill and the party people won the fight.
If every senator up for re-election did that, they would all increase their chances of losing to a Steve-Bannon-backed candidate. There is no safety in numbers when the number is fairly small — only six Senate Republicans are up in 2018 (not counting Flake, Corker or the Alabama special election). If every House Republican did that, that would be different. It would be something like 240 people.
harry: I think we’re seeing a major resistance to resisting Trump in that fashion. Look what’s happening in the Alabama Senate race. Roy Moore has said a lot of stuff outside the mainstream, and he was welcomed into Washington with open arms before he’s even won the seat. The fear of losing is really, really powerful. Distancing themselves from that part of the Republican base is not tenable because it would mean, in their mind, losing the election.
perry: A good test will be if Mitt Romney ever says a negative thing about Trump again, since he is rumored to be considering a Senate run in Utah if Orrin Hatch retires.
micah: Clare is on vacation, but in her honor I feel compelled to say …
MITT!!!!!
Anyway, give me a little more detail on what we would see the key tests being for Republicans in Congress.
natesilver: I continue to think the three nuclear-level events are:
Trump firing Mueller.
Trump pardoning people in his inner circle.
Mueller returning with an obstruction of justice finding or something equally severe against Trump.
micah: Let’s talk short of nuclear-level, though.
What would the ramp-up tests be?
natesilver: Part of the problem is that there aren’t that many ramp-up tests.
micah: Interesting!
harry: Again, what are you breaking with Trump on? The GOP Congress and Trump agree on most major policy questions — hence those high Trump scores.
micah: The Federal Reserve chair has to be confirmed by the Senate, right?
Other appointments?
And what about investigations?
Proactive anti-corruption laws?
Seems like there are a lot of options?
harry: I mean, if they started passing those anti-corruption laws, that would be a sign of something.
natesilver: If Trump tried to appoint, say, Rudy Giuliani to something, that would be interesting. But Trump has actually played it pretty carefully on appointments so far.
perry: Giuliani. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
I think it will be fairly hard to have clear votes on things because McConnell will signal to the White House when the votes are there and when they’re not.
micah: You think the Senate would balk at Christie?
perry: Let’s not debate Christie. He will not be nominated.
micah: Lol.
natesilver: Yeah, and that’s another flaw with roll-call measures — they don’t measure things that never get to the floor.
harry: Why the hate toward Mr. 14 Percent Approval? (Also known as Chris Christie.)
natesilver: BTW, Congress could be doing a lot more on its own to investigate Trump, and they could make more of those investigations public.
micah: Yeah, that would qualify as a ramp-up test to me.
natesilver: Mueller — and the media — have devoted a lot of resources to investigating Trump, obviously, but that doesn’t mean that Congress couldn’t ramp up its investigations too.
perry: And that is an important place where Congress is not pushing back on Trump.
In fact, Republicans in Congress have moved in a pro-Trump, anti-Hillary Clinton direction in terms of investigations.
harry: That’s why I think you said to watch Richard Burr, right, Perry? To watch some of those investigations.
perry: GOP super-partisans have basically captured all of the committees but Burr’s. That’s important.
micah: OK, final question: Is it accurate to call Collins, Flake, Corker, McCain or any other Senate Republican “anti-Trump”?
perry: I call them Trump-skeptical. Maybe that’s cautious, but it’s more accurate, I think.
micah: I like that terminology.
harry: My problem with this is it’s difficult to call someone anti-Trump when they are agreeing with him a lot on policy. I would call some of them Trump-headaches. I know, lame phrase.
natesilver: You could call them “anti-Trump-curious.”
micah: lol
perry: Jennifer Rubin and Bill Kristol are anti-Trump. I can’t think of a Republican member of Congress who is really anti-Trump.
They are anti-Trumpism.
If we think of Trumpism as being more about nationalism, white identity politics, norms-bashing, institution-breaking, media-slamming, then Flake, Corker, etc., are against that. But not really Trump policies.
harry: For an anti-Trumper, the disagreements with Trump’s behavior, etc., have to override policy agreement. I don’t think we see that yet in Congress.
micah: Yeah, the passive vs. active seems like the dividing line.
Let’s call them “passively anti-Trump curious.”

Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Lou Krugman (Dr. Adrian Vance) was born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1914. He made a memorable debut at Desilu as the patient film director in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;18).  After that episode was filmed, Lucy sent him a telegram telling him how impressed she was with his acting. She rewarded him with appearances in “The Great Train Robbery,” (ILL S5;E5) and the role of the Club Babalu's Manager in “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1) and “Lucy Meets Orson Welles” (ILL S6;E3). He will make two more appearances on ”The Lucy Show.“
The character's surname is undoubtedly a tribute to Vivian Vance.
Hazel Pierce (Chemistry Student, below right, uncredited) was Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in throughout “I Love Lucy.” She also made frequent appearances on the show, although only once did she speak, when she won the television auctioned off by Ladies Overseas Aid in “Ricky’s European Booking” (ILL S5;E10) and she shouted “I won!” This is the fifth of her 21 uncredited on-camera appearances on “The Lucy Show.” In the opening of season two, “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (S2;E1), she received screen credit as Mary Lou. She was also an uncredited extra in the film Forever Darling (1956).
In the wide shots, viewers can see that Lucy and Pierce are both wearing the same shoes.  As Lucy’s stand-in, the two probably shared wardrobe.
Tumblr media
Maurice Kelly (Student that asks about life on other planets, above left) makes first and only appearance on the series, although he went on to be seen in three episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” one of which served as his final screen credit.
Tumblr media
Karen Norris (Della Fox, student with a head cold) makes the first of her six background appearances on “The Lucy Show.”  She also did one episode of “Here's Lucy” in 1968.
Della Fox is the real-life name of “The Lucy Show” costumer.
Tumblr media
Ronald Keith (Georgie, younger student) was a child actor best known for his role as Leroy Forrester in “The Great Gildersleeve” (1955-56). He also played Freddie on “Fury” (1957-58). This episode of “The Lucy Show” is his last screen credit before leaving show-business.
Shep Houghton (Chemistry Student, uncredited) began working as an extra while still a teenager, taking background jobs on weekends and attending high school during the week. Between 1934 and 1947 he made three films with Lucille Ball, including Too Many Girls, the movie that brought together Lucy and Desi Arnaz. He did two episodes of “The Lucy Show” and one episode of “Here’s Lucy.” Houghton was one of the Winkie Guards in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz and a Southern Dandy in Gone With the Wind (1939).
Alberto Morin (Chemistrty Student, uncredited) was born in Puerto Rico, and appeared in some of Hollywood’s most cherished films: Gone with the Wind (1939), Casablanca (1943), and Key Largo (1948). He was Carlos, one of Ricky’s “Cuban Pals” (ILL S1;E28) and the Robert DuBois in “The French Revue” (ILL S3;E7). His many background appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy” were all uncredited.
Tumblr media
The episode was filmed on February 21, 1963. Gary Morton’s loud guffaw is especially audible on the soundtrack of this episode.
Tumblr media
The afternoon this episode premiered, April Fool’s Day 1963, ABC TV presented the first broadcast of “General Hospital” and NBC premiered “The Doctors.”
Tumblr media
In a rut, Lucy tells Viv that their only intellectual conversation is about whether Marshall Dillon will ever marry Kitty. These are characters from the long-running CBS western “Gunsmoke” (1955-75): Matt Dillon (James Arness) and barmaid Kitty Russell (Amanda Blake). Despite audiences wanting the pair to enter into a relationship, it never came to be. Lou Krugman (Professor Vance) played a barkeep on “Gunsmoke” (above) just one month after this episode of “The Lucy Show” first aired.
Tumblr media
Lucy compares herself to Madame Curie. Marie Curie was a Polish-born French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize - twice!
Tumblr media
Anticipating that her formula for eternal youth has worked, Lucy says “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?” This is the question that the evil queen puts to her magic mirror in the fairy tale “Snow White.”  Coincidentally, Moroni Olsen, who played the Judge in “The Courtroom” (ILL S2;E7) was the voice of the slave in the magic mirror.  Pinto Colvig, who voiced all the dogs in Lucy Carmichael’s neighborhood in “Lucy is Her Own Lawyer” (S2;E23) did the voices of Grumpy and Sleepy.
Tumblr media
Lucy mentions Chris's drum majorette rehearsal. Chris being a drum majorette was was established in “Lucy is a Soda Jerk” (S1;E23).
Tumblr media
Some of the other offerings at the Danfield Adult School offers are 'Conversational French' and 'United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East.'
Tumblr media
After being stumped by Jerry and Sherman's question about the weight of rocket fuel, Lucy wonders if they offer 'Cape Canaveral at a Glance.' Cape Canaveral and the space program were mentioned in “Lucy Becomes an Astronaut” (S1;E6).
Tumblr media
LUCY: “Shouldn’t we test it on a monkey first?” VIV: “If there’s one thing the world doesn’t need, it’s younger monkeys.”
Tumblr media
At the end of this episode’s original airing, Vivian Vance and Ed Krugman do an in-character commercial for new pink liquid Swan dish washing detergent. Swan was a brand of soap introduced by the Lever Brothers Company in 1941 to compete with Ivory. Ivory won - Swan is no longer on the market.
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
This is the third “Lucy Show” that Lucy has had a comedic encounter with a shower. The first time was in “Lucy is a Referee” (S1;E3) and the second in “Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower” (S1;E18).
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball is no stranger to wigs and putty noses. She famously wore a false nose when she met William Holden in “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In “The Black Wig” (ILL S3;E26) Lucy Ricardo used a dark wig to be more glamorous, the opposite of the effect here. Mrs. Carmichael says she hasn’t had dark hair since she was 16.
Fast Forward!
Tumblr media
Four years later, Lucy Carmichael goes back to school full time in “Lucy Gets Her Diploma” (S6;E5).
Tumblr media
Lucy Carmichael is fascinated by glass tubes, bubbling beakers, and Bunsen burners in “Lucy the Robot” (S4;E23).
Tumblr media
Lucy and Mary Jane take a night class in auto repair in “The Not-So-Popular Mechanics” (HL S5;E22).
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Quiz Masters! Sherman and Jerry argue about whether rocket fuel is measured by gallons or tons, with Jerry saying that since that fuel is a liquid it's measured in gallons. However, in this case it would be measured in tons, as the the weight of the fuel is a critical factor, not the volume of the tank.
Oops! When Lucy is about to do her experiment she asks Vivian to give her some glass tubing. Vivian flubs her line by saying there is no "gas" tubing.
Oops Again! When changing seats to assure Viv is her lab partner, Lucy drops her pencil. The student sitting next to her (Maurice Kelly) picks it up for her.
