Once upon a time

Jean-Paul was born in 1989. His parents died when he was an infant, and he was separated from his twin sister Jeanne-Marie. Bad luck struck a second time when his adoptive family also died in an accident when he was 6 years old. He ended in a foste ome and had a lonely childhood and chaotic youth. Vulnerable and confused, he fell for Belmonde who basically groomed him , helping him with his powers and his confusion about his sexuality. They ended up in France where Paul joined a circus as an acrobat.

It took him a long time to get away from Belmonde, and think for himself. He fled back to Quebec and walked a path that he thought was the right one. He joined a radical separatist mouvement called "Front de Libération du Québec" . Believing in a cause for freedom , was something he stand behind. However, he left that group after the bombing attemps, he managed to stop one. This was a turning point for Jean-Paul. Yet again, he had been lured into false ideas of freedom and love.

He took upon himself to beter himself, and decided to really focus on himself and have a normal life. He joined the Olypmic Games on the ski team and became quite a known olmypist. He was contacted by Departement H to join Alpha Flight, the Canadian main team of superheroes. This time, he saw the selfish agenda of DH. One of his missions was to reclaim Wolverine. This time, he made the right choice.

However, Departement H allowed him to reconnect with his twin. It went sour all too quickly. She had the same output on life he had years ago. During a mission he was gravely wounded d, Northstar ended up in intensitive care. DNA determined that he was linked to the Front de Libération du Québec, however since he had killed no one he was pardoned. After that he left Alpha Flight for good. The reason for having been wounded was a baby in a dumpster who was HIV positive and displayed symptoms. He later adopted the child and named her Joanne. Sadly she passed away , becoming the reason Northstar would come out , accept himself and return to civilian life to make amends.

Closely after 2012 events, he was recruited by Jean for a mission , he first rejected it, but then agreed when Jean explained that it was Aurora, his twin sister who had been abducted by the Brotherhood.  He found her half insane, he nursed her back to health with the aid of the X-men. She eventually managed to hold her schizophrenia and DID kind of at bay. During the Skrull war, Northstar’s Husband was killed. He and his sister fought in San Fransisco with other X-men. He then lead a lot of reconnaissance missions along the west coast with Bobbi during the war effort.

He has signed the act to be able to move around the USA (and thinks that it is not so a bad idea)

2015: Do I Know You? - Clint passes on gossip to Felicia about the strange goings-on; Maya wonders if random unconscious people is a mansion “thing”; “Daniella” decides getting to Montreal and Jean-Paul’s mentor is the best idea and hotwires an older car for the drive; while getting gas, they are nearly arrested by the RCMP and have to ditch the car and lay low for a while before venturing out again; Quentin ventures out into the astral plane again and this time it’s Jean-Paul who gets taken along for the ride along with some hard truths that Quentin doesn’t want to hear; reaching Montreal, they contact Raymonde Belmonde and he calls the mansion, with Clarice arriving to take them home; Charles helps Quentin guide them to where Daniella is ‘hiding’ in her mind, and between them, they encourage her to take control again and let them go; Wanda emails Lorna, Amanda and X-Force to let them all know she’s all right but in need of magical follow-up after the issue with the Chthon ward; Wanda posts to her journal to reassure people she’s all right and to thank Felicia for the post-it she found on her leg; Gabriel demands fast food delivery to medlab. Kurt emails Jubilee about a gift he received and realises it’s a proposal, which he accepts.

2016: Kyle offers to write everyone late notes, explaining he can hear their screaming re the World Series. Jean-Paul seeks out Everett in the gym and asks for help with powers training leading to an unexpected bit of news. Ev asks Clint and Tasha if they’re familiar with Jean-Paul, letting them know that he’d given the man some bad news he probably shouldn’t have. Unable to distract himself from Ev’s revelation Jean-Paul seeks out Quentin for a distraction.

2017:

2018: Johnny makes a journal entry telling everyone he’s heading back to college.

2019:

2020: Time Stand Still: Topaz emails Amanda, Marie-Ange and Doug to let them know her therapist has sent her on a weekend retreat.

2021: Arise, X-Man: In a much better frame of mind after her retreat, Laurie talks to Doug about their break up, with Darcy mediating.

2022: April checks in on Forge and they wind up talking nuclear physics.

I was listening to an xmen podcast and the host was talking about how it was practically implied that Northstar was a survival sex worker as a foster care runaway before he was taken under Raymonde’s wing (which that’s another can of worms)

It would be interesting to revisit that storyline with a fresh and nuanced perspective imo

Raymonde had led him out of that dark fear, into the bright clear light of self-acceptance, teaching him not to fear his mutant powers, or any other thing.

Hi, it's me again. How old are Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie?

As with most company-owned comic book characters, the ages of the Beaubier twins are unfixed. For Marvel's purposes, they are going to be ever dwelling in that marketable 25-to-early 30's age range. But for important age milestones:

Infancy - orphaned when their parents were killed in a car crash

Six - Jean-Paul's adopted parents, the Martins, die in another car crash

Between 12 and 14 - Jean-Paul runs away from his foster family and is sheltered by Raymonde Belmonde

Thirteen - Jeanne-Marie's powers manifest; she's abused into psychotic break when she confesses, leading to the manifestation of Aurora

He does so by varying the rate of acceleration of the molecules of his body out of phase with one another, thereby generating a cascade of photonic discharges. As a result, he can release this light in a powerful, condensed form of a concussive blast or concussive waves from his hands or his entire body.

Superhuman Speed: He possesses the ability to propel his body at superhuman speed, becoming a living projectile. Through an act of concentration, Northstar can channel a portion of the kinetic energy of the atomic motion in his body’s molecules in a single direction. This can accelerate his body in a velocity in direct proportions to the amount of kinetic energy he has tapped. He is able to isolate movement to a portion or a segment of his body. His superhuman speed allows him to achieve: 

-Heightened Reflexes -Accelerated Metabolism -G-Force Compensation -Superhuman Durability

Superhuman Condition: As a result of being experimented on by a rogue Weapon X facility in Quebec, Northstar has since shown a degree of modifications to musculature. With the combination of his speed, he is able to achieve a heightened degree of agility and strength. He has demonstrated shredding through a structure constructed of steel while remaining unscathed.

Flight: He has the ability to propel himself through the air. To hover in mid-air Northstar applies thrust downward in a carefully controlled manner. When carrying another, unprotected human being aloft, Northstar does not move faster than 60 miles per hour in order that his “passenger” may be able to breathe easily (Northstar himself can breathe at somewhat higher rates due to training) and so that the “passenger” will not suffer harm from wind, friction, or air turbulence.

Origin Story:

Jean-Paul Beaubier was an infant when his parents were killed in a car crash. He was soon adopted by a family named Martin and separated from his twin Jeanne-Marie. Jean-Paul led a rather lonely childhood, often getting into trouble. As a teen, he attempted to steal from a man, who was himself involved in shady dealings. Belmonde helped the young Jean-Paul deal with his emerging super-human powers and perhaps with his homosexuality as well. As a result, he felt a sense of need and would always remain loyal to the man. The speedster even endured physical harm and strain in order to remain in the eye of the man. With quite a few anti-mutant, allies, and supremacy groups on the rise, so were agencies. They were ready to jump on the first opportunity to exploit the population. Belmonde jumped on the first opportunity and would submit the mutant program.

Many of these mutants were forced, rounded up. Somewhere easier to manipulate while others were “created” to do as they bid. Unlike his fellow, Jean-Paul had no official skillset to rank amongst the assassin. He was experimented on. They forced him to reach the limits of his mutation and would make him go beyond. They tested his healing factor and compared it to their feral mutant, placing him as a possible support for the weapon. He was broken and pieced together only to be destroyed again. He was trained to be a living projectile. He became aggressive. Violent. Angry. His longing for becoming a leader for his kind had been forgotten through the stake of blood, sweat, tears, and fear. He had become what he didn’t want. 

Due to a severe “accident,” he does not remember many of the trials and missions but until this day, he could see the bloodshed on his hands. He fled once the force had been destroyed by a band of mutants and with Xavier’s support, Jean-Paul was able to reclaim some sense of normalcy. He was re-educated. He now resides at the Institute, teaching and providing troubled youth with an escape and an ally.

NORTHSTAR

Northstar formerly Jean-Paul Beaubier is an incredibly dashing hero, literally. His incredible speed and energy projectiles make him a great hero and will be getting into how amazing this underrated character really is in this blog post.

Powers and Abilities

First off what he is best at and known for is his speed. He possesses the ability to propel his body at superhuman speed, becoming a living projectile. Through an act of concentration, Northstar can channel a portion of the kinetic energy of the atomic motion in his body’s molecules in a single direction. This can accelerate his body in a velocity in direct proportions to the amount of kinetic energy he has tapped. It was once theoretically possible for him to reach 99% of the speed of light (186, 272 miles per second in a vacuum), although he never traveled at anywhere near that speed since if he did, he would wreak great damage upon himself and his environment. Northstar can also move a portion of his body at superhuman speed at a time.

Bio

He was only a baby when his parents died in a car crash. Though he was adopted, the family had died as well in an accident, leading Jean-Paul to live a lonely childhood. As a teen, he attempted to steal from a man named Raymonde Belmonde, who was himself involved in shady dealings. Belmonde helped the young Jean-Paul deal with his emerging super-human powers and perhaps with his homosexuality as well. Jean-Paul eventually left Belmonde and joined a circus in France as an acrobat. Always fiercely nationalistic, Jean-Paul returned to Quebec and joined a radical Separatist movement called "Le Front de Liberation du Quebec." However, he discovered their terrorist activities and left the group after stopping a bomb on a bus, with no official recognition that he was ever a member. Jean-Paul then decided to turn his passion for skiing into a career, and with his powers of speed quickly became a champion at the Olympic Games. After gaining notoriety as a sports star, he was contacted by James MacDonald Hudson, who had already met Beaubier's twin Jeanne-Marie. Jean-Paul was intrigued to meet the sister he never knew and joined Department H as Alpha Flight's "Northstar." He was present when Alpha Flight first fought the X-Men in Calgary in an attempt to reclaim Wolverine, who had once been Department H's "Weapon X." Unfortunately, Jean-Paul's abrasive personality made staying a member of Alpha Flight difficult. He was increasingly disdainful of Jeanne-Marie's relationship with Sasquatch (an attitude which may actually have been jealousy), and eventually left the team after a fight with his sister over an implied insult to her propriety. (Aurora then had Sasquatch manipulate her powers so that she was no longer identical to her brother.) While he was not officially a member at the time, Northstar later joined Alpha Flight when Loki's Fire fountain opened in Ungava Bay, Canada, because Aurora was suffering from a bout with her schizophrenia at the time. When Phoenix attacked Alpha Flight, blaming them for a psychic distress call she received from her father (Cyclops), Northstar chose Rogue as a target. Rogue kissed Northstar to drain his powers, and immediately became privy to all Jean-Paul's secrets, presumably including his sexual orientation. Interestingly enough, during the ensuing encounter with the Fire Fountain and the people transformed by it, Northstar agreed to touch Rogue's skin to see if Anodyne had cured her. Later, Northstar was forced to rejoin Alpha Flight at the Eye of the World when Talisman issued a mystic summons for help in their efforts to free Sasquatch's soul from the realm of the Great Beasts. Upset at being manipulated, he almost left immediately, but Snowbird used her powers to force him to stay. With Northstar's help, Alpha Flight managed to rescue Walter's soul, though Sasquatch's body was destroyed and his soul was now trapped in the box armor. It was not long before Sasquatch tried to regain a more human form, which led him to locate a humanoid body in another dimension. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the Hulk, and Sasquatch refused to displace his former colleague and friend, so his soul again was lost. When Alpha Flight responded to calls to put down the returned (and rampaging) Hulk, Northstar and Aurora tried to use their gestalt light powers, but instead, their touch shorted each other's powers out, due to the genetic changes Sasquatch had performed on Aurora. Northstar stayed with the reconstituted Alpha Flight for quite sometime after that. Eventually, his past as a terrorist was revealed to all (though Alpha had known for some time) when his former commander began killing off his subordinates and Jean-Paul was forced to save them. Fortunately, because he took part only in very limited terrorist activities, none of them murderous, Northstar was pardoned by the Canadian government. 

Northstar remained an active member of a reorganized Alpha Flight for a while, surviving through the apparent abduction of his sister and then finding her again as a prisoner of Headlok. Following Headlok's defeat and Aurora's return to active duty, Jean-Paul discovered a baby abandoned in a dumpster, while in combat with the rest of the team. The child was HIV-positive and had already manifested AIDS symptoms, but Jean-Paul adopted her and named her Joanne. Sadly, Joanne died shortly thereafter, but her life and death catalyzed something inside Northstar, and he called a press conference at which he announced: "I am gay". Northstar remained a member of Alpha Flight while the team was in existence, but left angrily during a suspension of operations due to anti-mutant sentiments. 

Northstar spent much of his time in this period searching for Aurora, who had disappeared following her breakup with Weapon Omega/Wildchild. He managed to stop her from killing Wildchild in a fit and brought her back to Canada for treatment, but she was abducted (and later released) by the Brotherhood of Mutants. Northstar eventually found her, half-insane, in the school in which she had grown up and taught. Though she eluded his grasp, Jean-Paul eventually got her treated with the help of his original Alpha Flight teammates, who discovered that Jeanne-Marie's worsened condition was part of a plot by Department H to destabilize certain mutants. The original team was reinstated, but Northstar stayed only a short time. With the "outing" of the X-Men as mutants and the vast expansion of the Xavier Institute, Charles Xavier himself approached Northstar with an offer to teach business and economics to his students. Jean-Paul refused at first but did grant a request by Xavier to support the X-Men field team operating nearby as they collected a new mutant. The mutant, a boy named Peter, turned out to possess an explosive field that decimated everything within a three- to four-foot radius, and Northstar insisted on flying him to a hospital so the Blackbird aircraft would not be damaged. Along the way, the two mutants struck up the conversation and came to accept each other (despite the ten-year-old's uneasiness towards homosexuals), but then Peter's powers flared twice more, and on the second time, Northstar was knocked out and they fell to the ground. Peter suffered severe internal injuries, and despite Xavier's assistance, the boy died. Northstar himself was heavily wounded, but as soon as he regained consciousness he accepted Xavier's offer and transferred to the Institute's faculty. During his convalescence, Jean-Paul found himself attracted by Bobby Drake, although these feelings did not go further.

As his old friends reformed Alpha Flight, Northstar returned to Canada and began living with his husband. He refused to rejoin Alpha Flight at first but reconsidered so he could keep an eye on what he believed to be troubling behavior from his sister.

Significance

Northstar is a great character to certainly means a lot to Marvel as he is to be their first openly gay character. It is important to them due to the fact that they try to stray away from doing so to characters. This, however, was definitely that a lot of people have been wanting and asked for. Now, I understand that it brings controversy and makes it feel like he needs more representation now because of the character’s sexuality but I think that it really doesn’t matter all that much. Granted, it creates a bigger fanbase, but I truly think his powers and backstory alone are incredible enough to show how great he is and underrated a character is which can definitely be shown more.

2017: Laurie texts Doug, Marie-Ange, and Wade seeking company while she recovers from her recent injuries. Marie-Ange goes to talk to Angelo, having found out about his engagement to her cousin from outside sources.

2018: Sins of the Father: Angelo emails Wanda to tell her it was Adam Destine who hurt Amanda; sleep doesn’t fix all problems, and, in Amanda’s case, sleep might have made everything worse; Marie-Ange posts to all teams minus Gen-X inquiring about Topaz’s disappearance; It's been all of five-ish hours since the news of Topaz' departure before Amanda tries to get up, and Cecilia isn't having any of it; Topaz barely has time to start adjusting before rescue comes, only to discover it's an illusion; still reeling from the encounter with “Amanda”, Topaz isn’t particularly prepared for what the Destines have in store for her next; the torture and isolation continue, until Jasmine comes to heal her.

2019: Hope talks to Warren about her plan for rebuilding his reputation and how it continues even when he leaves for Switzerland.

Jean-Paul Beaubier

Powers: Superhuman speed, flight and the ability to produce a bright white light from his body.

Jean-Paul Beaubier’s parents were killed in a car crash shortly after his birth. He and his twin sister Jeanne-Marie were taken in by the Martins, cousins of their mother, but they could not afford to raise both children and so sent Jeanne-Marie to a catholic girl’s school. When Jean-Paul was six, he was placed in a foster home after his foster parents died, and the twins grew up unaware of each other. As a teenager, Jean-Paul was caught stealing by Raymonde Belmonde, who became his mentor and guardian, helping Jean-Paul cope with both his emerging mutant nature and his sexuality. Belmonde introduced Jean-Paul to skiing, which he used as a means to help control his super-speed, later becoming World and Olympic champion. Jean-Paul also joined a circus and became a talented trapeze artist regarding his fellow performers as the family he had never known.

Later, the Canadian government’s Department H had begun forming Alpha Flight when the team’s founder, who had already recruited Jean-Paul’s sister (Aurora), saw a photo of him, noticed their similarities and discovered they were siblings. Jean-Paul was overjoyed to learn that he had a sister, joining the team as Northstar to be with her. The twin’s reunion came as a surprise to all, for when they touched they created a flash of intense light.

Northstar came out to the World in a press conference when he announced “I am gay” and later married his brand manager, Kyle Jinadu. Northstar has worked with Alpha Flight on and off over the years, and several times with the X-men, even teaching at Xavier's School.
