Not-very-spoilery thoughts on the movie release of Pillar Training (+SSV conclusion)

Behind a cut anyway just in case!

--Very nice to hear familiar background music brought back--Yuukaku themes when Uzui & his wives appear, Mitsuri's "Koi Kogare" BGM when she has a good batch of lines, Giyuu's BGM as he's like, "bye"

--I am very happy with the new OP, both sound and imagery-wise.

--One very short clip in particular made me, a fanfic writer, very very happy, but then there was more gratuitous focus that reminded me of another one of my best fanfics. The rewards of writing fic as closely based on canon as I could get them gives me the satisfaction of feel liking like canon-based imagery honors my fics by extension.

--Speaking of imagery in general, Ufotable is finding lots of ways to try to harp on the idea that everyone's wishes to destroy demons find their accumulation in Tanjiro, the Sun Breath user and first person in centuries to unlock the Mark. It is perhaps a little clumsy at times, but hey, that's a theme I like in this series.

--I was sad that Suma sounded so different, and had to look up afterward if she still had the same seiyuu. She does, but I think they might have given her totally different vocal direction so that she wouldn't sound too similar to Mitsuri

--Japanese crowds tend to be very quiet at movie theaters, but people could not contain their giggles at many of Mitsuri's lines

--I had the honor of sitting next to a huuuuuuuge fangirl who before the moving was saying stuff to her friends like, "(Hanae) Natsuki-san was at USJ the other day, and since it's a VR ride, you know, you have to wear the goggles, and I think, what if I wear the pair that he wore??? You know?? Our faces??? Would be so close?????" and then at the review of previous seasons at the beginning of the show, she started crying the instant the Mugen Ressha part started. Not loud crying, but crying.

--You can tell everyone was waiting for the "welcome back" scene, and although I thought Zenitsu would steal the show in that scene, it was indeed Nezuko. In the seiyuu greeting that was broadcast across all Japanese theaters on the opening day, Shimono-san noted that he thinks the audio was turned down on his performance of that scene. I think it was probably was too.

--So much happy daily life in this episode. If you have any friends who complained about last year's theater showing being a let-down because it was just regular anime episodes instead of a Mugen Train style movie, please tell them to just sit this one out and spare us their complaints. Most of this showing was just Tanjiro having a nice time after having a panic attack over Nezuko (oh, and like, killing Upper Moon Four, that too).

--Shinobu's hair seems distinctly longer. Giyuu's hair seems distinctly fluffier.

--Ufotable has put a lot of touches into humanizing Amane

--I wish Ufotable would stop trying to drive the "Zenitsu thinks Aoi is happy to see him (just because Aoi is a girl)" point. First off, yes, Zenitsu being a creep to girls is played up a bit in the anime. Second, the first fanbook states that the only kind of girl who is not so much his type is the Aoi-type.

--Also, on the promo art, I like the design they gave Shinobu's sword, but that's ignoring the fact that the four engraved kanji characters are on either side. Go ahead, Ufotable, hire me as your canon double-checker. EDIT: Oh wait, that is its sheath. Lovely, carry on.

--That said, the original filler they gave us? Gold star. Excellent. So happy with it. One... well, two tiny nitpicks that don't bother me much but stating it here would spoil it.

--One more non-spoilery thing to say about that filler: the people at Ufotable were probably like, "our fans are nerds. We already give them this, this, this, and that to nerd over. You know what else they are probably nerds for? Yeah. Let's give them that." Thank you, Ufotable. This nerd accepts and loved it.

--Tiny Nezuko filler as they set the stage talking about Muzan is probably looking for her? LOVE THAT TOUCH, at every level.

--Shinobu does have multiple goldfish, but they look a bit different?

--Genya's makes the best face in this whole episode

--Speaking of Genya, in the seiyuu greeting they had actors in big chibi costumes of the Kamaboko gang come out... PLUS GENYA. Giant chibi grumpy Genya was so, so, so, so freaking cute. Also, his seiyuu Okamoto got to join the stage with everybody and was talking about how he always used to scroll through his social media seeing the other seiyuu at KnY events and he was like, "sigh... sure looks like everyone is having fun..."

--Hanae Natsuki and his wife are big Genya fans, though, it seems

--Okamoto had a lot of trouble performing young Genya in the flashback, especially the emotional screaming. The desperation Genya always displays as he fights? That was Okamoto. --Meanwhile, Matsuoka always looks very overwhelmed at these things. I think having to embody the spirit of Inosuke terrifies him.

--IT WAS SO GOOD TO HEAR INOSUKE AGAIN

--Those actors in chibi costumes? The Zenitsu and Inosuke ones embodied them SO WELL. I don't usually care for those giant mascot character costumes, but these were legit so much fun to watch, like with Inosuke going right up into the cameras and Zenitsu trying to pull him back and then the two of them pushing and shoving. Zenitsu acting like he is being bullied and Inosuke showing off his muscles. I loved them. I am very sad that I will not be in town when they travel across Japan and come to my area.

--Also, the baritone voice of Oyakata-sama's personal crow? LOVED IT.

--Himejima at the the Pillar Meeting is such a statement. The new promotional material has a tag line that prominently uses one of the kanji in his name ("cry out"), and I feel like this is set-up for him to have a lot of impact later on in this season. Here's hoping!

--I am probably gonna go watch it again in a couple weeks, ufufufu

--Which is worth it for that KIZUNA NO KISEKI REMIX WHICH SOUNDED SO COOL IN SURROUND SOUND, OH MY GOSH

Meet the Seiyuu: Grim

Grim’s seiyuu Sugiyama Noriaki has been voice acting since 1999.

His first recurring role in an anime was as the voice of Uchiha Sasuke in Naruto. He is also the voice of Ishida Uryuu in Bleach and Emiya Shirou in Fate/stay night.

Today is his birthday!

Sugiyama has voiced over 35 lead characters in various anime and OVA such as Shukuri Akito in NORN9, Boris Airay in Alice in the Country of Hearts, Harumoto Keishi in ACTORS -Songs Connection- and more.

He is also a previous Toboso Yana collaborator, voicing William T. Spears in the Kuroshitsuji anime.

Sugiyama is very prolific in the video game and drama CD industries, voicing characters in over 200 video games such as the Naruto, Bleach, Alice in the Country of Hearts and Fate/stay night series, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Magna Carta II, Wrench in Watch Dogs 2 and more.

He also does dubs of foreign movies and cartoons, providing the Japanese-language voices of Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Kevin Levin from Ben 10.

Sugiyama has a video game-based YouTube channel which sounds very similar to Grim playing video games, it is very cute.

I lost motivation to summarize this promotional event about Kimi no Iro about halfway through but I'm posting it anyway

My listening comprehension is pretty bad, so caveat lector. eiga.com has their own summary in Japanese.

The movie has been finished since around January

After seeing Liz, Genki Kawamura called up Shinkai and was like "yo have you seen this shit?"

Kawamura claims he's had success selling the overseas distribution rights on a level you'd normally expect from a Ghibli or Shinkai movie.

God Yamada looks so fucking nervous and uncomfortable with people talking about her on stage.

Following that question is a kind of weird exchange where the host uses Kawamura's answer as a segue to ask Naoko Yamada how the movie came about. She gives the non-answer that she respects the concept of theatrical filmmaking and made this film with the experience of the people who come to the theater to see it in mind. She emphasizes the theatrical experience later as well.

The host follows up by doing what in the English speaking world is almost a faux pas: ask a director point blank what their movie's theme is. Yamada has no qualms about laying down her views on her own work – she's part of her own audience – but her work is usually too complicated to sum up so easily. She struggles to put together a response and I'm not sure how to summarize it except "I wanted to make a movie that would connect with people, who will all bring their own points of view to the movie, but the themes are difficult to put into words." The eiga.com article didn't even try.

The old key visual/teaser of course represented the characters using colors, and the host asks how she uses colors. A good question. Yamada explains that color is a sensual thing: something like time and movement which is vital to film language. The concept that Totsuko visualizes the world and people around her as colors is part of this. I'm surprised she doesn't go into more detail, but again: she is clearly not in her element lol

The host asks what they should expect from the movie, mentions music, and Yamada is immediately like "MUSIC! You've got it right. Music. A musical experience. [whisper] yeah. that's it."

Kawamura quickly jumps in to say that Yamada is the best director in the world at depicting the linguistically inexpressable feelings of teenagers and mention K-ON!

The announcer says that Yamada watching the seiyuu introduce themselves has the warmth of a mom watching her daughters, which is true but a weird thing to say lmao

Note how Yamada watches the others and can't tell whether to sit down or bow

-and that's about as far as I got. To quickly summarize the eiga.com summary, during the seiyuu portion Sister Hiyoshiko's seiyuu (I'm not forgetting how that's read am I?) Yui Aragaki says that when she saw the finished movie, "everything was so fine and soft; a kindness came from the screen like a spring breeze blowing through my heart," thus illustrating that they use the same clichés to talk about Yamada in Japanese as in English. Sounds about right though. Further, her character is "a figure between the adults and the kids, who quietly yet fervently…yeah, truly fervently watches over Totsuko and the rest."

There are some anecdotes about Yamada's impressions of the actors and their impression of Yamada – apparently Takaishi's seiyuu came with a huge-ass water bottle that was already like half empty – but that's honestly about the long-and-short of it.

Masuyama Takeaki & Kobayashi Chikahiro are dubbing the MCs in Red, White & Royal Blue???

Well. Now I'm dying to watch that in Japanese!!!! 0___0 (I haven't even watched the original. Yet)

Guys, really? You've never done a BLCD but you're dubbing THIS? How.

I remember Masuyama was a minor character on some BLCDs, but never in the main couple. And I don't think Chika has done anything BL related (sadly, because he could've been a super hot seme *_* I love his voice).

I mean, can you imagine them dubbing this scene? Or this?? (n-sfw). I NEED to hear them!!

Speaking of dubbing, to answer this anon about Good Omens in Japanese -

I must say - I have no idea. I've never thought of that. I mostly prefer to watch things in their original language. So anime in JP, movies and tv shows in their original languages. Good Omens is perfect and I adore the cast. I can't even imagine watching that dubbed.

Now I feel like this contradicts what I wrote above, but it's not really. The only reason I'd want to watch Red, White & Royal Blue in JP is to hear two seiyuu who have never done BL, dubbing in actual BL scenes (and I think it's even harder than recording CDs, because they have to look at the scenes in front of them while dubbing them, unlike reading from a script for a CD 😳).

I just saw clips of Samurai Jack dubbed in Japanese out of curiousity and it's interesting!!

I liked Aku's English voice more (more humour and theatrics in Mako's voice acting, his Japanese seiyuu Sugawara Bunta who is also a film actor not only seiyuu--he's most known for yakuza movies, like Battles Without Honour and Humanity--is very dramatic, but seems less comedic--I think he gets better, though, because his voice here is VERY good, but in the intro/opening it sounded a bit flat, so maybe his seiyuu changed the way he voiced him over time to be more lively?), but Jack's Japanese voice Ukaji Takashi (who notably acted in Kamen Rider, also, his mother is of Ainu descent ^^) is veeery good! I really like the Japanese both use, Aku sounds very egotistical and self-absorbed, Jack sounds very old-fashioned and fitting for a samurai character! ^^

When I looked at the Japanese comments, people were praising Sugawara Bunta's voice acting the most, but also saw one praising the casting choices for both Sugawara Bunta and Ukaji Takashi as Aku and Jack respectively, describing it as shibui. Refined, understated, etc. So, I guess those voices held more appeal to Japanese viewers for their seriousness, while American cartoons (especially for younger viewers) favoured a more tongue-in-cheek/comedic delivery!

After Oppenheimer release in Japan at last, audiences give it a nice evaluate basically. However the greatest critic is: Bitters End didn't give them a Japanese DUB because of dozen of professional terms that let them hard to understand! Netizens in Twitter are making tones of Oppenheimer dub wishing list. Even only Oppie, there are basically have three choice right here... Do they consider Oppenheimer is a Byronic Hero?

Just Gash Bell Musings

I was 18 when I first got into the Zatch/Gash Bell manga and anime series in 2006. During the summer, I caught a glimpse of an English dub episode on Cartoon Network while visiting a relative. I didn't have TV cable at my house at the time. A few months later, my mom brought back a Zatch Bell manga from the library, which was volume 7. This was the volume that introduced me to Suzume / Suzy. I researched the series on my college's library's computer.

Soon I was so interested in the series that I started to watch the English dub episodes, the Japanese version with English fansubs while the anime was still airing in Japan at the time, and waited for the fan translations for the manga chapters which the manga was still running in Weekly Shounen Sunday on my very first laptop despite having a low ass internet speech via an internet USB broadband back then lmaoooo. Ah, the good old days.

I remembered the day when the final anime episode aired and watched it in RAW on YouTube while waiting for the fansubs. Yeah, I didn't know Japanese, but still wanted to know how they ended the anime. The manga was on hiatus due to the author breaking his drawing hand, so I guess the anime writers couldn't do much, but make an original ending for the anime. After the anime ended, I kept up with the manga chapter releases after it came out of hiatus.

And now seventeen years later, there is a sequel to the original Zatch Bell manga, and holy cow, we have a grown-up Kiyomaro and a teenager Gash. It's so crazy to think about. I often wonder why they didn't make an anime reboot to follow the manga storyline from the beginning. Yeah. The Clear Note Arc wasn't animated and there were charges to the Faudo arc and Suzume's character was RUINED in the anime. Yeah, I am still bitter as heck lmao.

I hope there is an anime reboot one day with new seiyuus and new English dub voice actors and an anime reboot that gives justice to Suzume's character. She was DONE dirty in the anime. I still haven't forgiven the anime writers for what they have done to her in the London arc and the Faudo arc and they made her more incompetent than how she was in the manga. As for the Zatch Bell 2 sequel, I don't care about who Suuzme ends up with, just give me closure on her.

As you can tell, Suzume is my favorite character in the series. She's the one who got me into the series because I wanted to know more about her. And her English dub voice was….ugh. The dub made her sound more annoying than in the Japanese version so I prefer her Japanese voice. Also, Suzy? Her English dub name should have been Suzanna or Susan. I guess my alternative fangiven names for Suzume sounds too "pretty" for a plain-looking girl like her, I guess.

Well, that's all about my musings on Gash / Zatch Bell. Since Discotek Media licensed and subbed the Gash Bell movies, I hope they relicensed and rereleased the anime with retranslated subtitles and an uncut and unedited new English dub with the original Japanese names. I'd prefer it if there were new English dub voice actors because why not? lmao.

K-project feels so underrated somehow. Is it well known in Japan? Cause they have some of popular seiyuus in it like Mamoru Miyano & Daisuke Ono. Like seriously I never heard of my friend. I feel lucky Animax air this lol. I wonder how did you started to get to know K-project? And when did you started to like Fushimi?

I don't think it's a 'major' anime in Japan or anything but it does have a decent-sized following, I remember a few years ago there was actually a K cosplayer (I think dressed as Munakata?) on some Japanese talk show where they referred to the character as being from 'the popular anime K' and 'popular anime K' was trending for a bit and is occasionally treated as an affectionate nickname by the Japanese fans. It was at least popular enough for two anime seasons, multiple movies and several stage plays, which is pretty good for an original anime series. It's definitely more niche nowadays though, especially since a lot of the continuing content is paywalled and mostly geared towards the super fans.

For me, I got into it right when it aired (yes...I've always been here). I saw a PV for the first season on Tumblr a few months prior to it airing and thought the show looked interesting so I made plans to watch it (I usually watch 4-6 shows every season, that's about the max I can keep up with). Though I actually didn't like it much at first, I found the first several episodes really confusing and couldn't get into it. I did fixate on Fushimi from the start because I liked his character design but I didn't really get into his character 'properly' until after the anime was over. I was curious to see other people's reactions to the way the anime ended and that led me to finding the Fushimi/Yata trading drama CD (with the interview and the Private Hero drama) and that's really the thing that got me into the series, just the bitterness and pain between Yata and Fushimi in Private Hero made me want to know more about them and soon Fushimi was basically my new obsession.

Not sure if this is a rabbit hole I feel like going down tonight, but this is a thing I find interesting all the same.

The song "Maji Love 1000%" came out in 2011 as the ED theme for the first season of the UtaPri anime. It's an iconic song and has been performed in every seiyuu live and even showed up in the double encore of the STARISH Tours movie just for that nostalgic sting.

But there's a line in it that I noticed was odd, at some point; I don't even know when. It's so odd. In the official Sentai release, which was on Crunchyroll and is now on Hidive, one of the lines in the first verse (the words are traded off between Masato and Ren) is translated thusly:

"A myeterious rave that connects our hearts"

A couple of years ago, I threw together a subtitle file for the first seiyuu live, in which that song is sung twice, and I used lyrics from the wiki. These were originally translated by Moonlit Sanctuary over on Livejournal, and this person had something quite different:

"My heart - is flustered - a marvelous rave!"

So I looked at the original Japanese lyrics, and this is what they say:

Masato：心 Ren：騒ぐ Masato & Ren：不思議なRAVE

If you listen to the song, you can hear Suwabe (as Ren) sing "sawagu". It's pretty clear.

Sure enough, "騒ぐ" is sawagu, not tsunagu. And "sawagu" doesn't mean anything regarding connections; it's about clamor and making merriment and stuff. So it seems a bit sloppy that an official translation had it wrong; surely they had access to the original lyrics as written in Japanese, right?

OK, well, that was 13 years ago, these things happen and I'm sure that when the song got revisited for STARISH Tours they fixed it--

...or not.

(I'm positive I'm not the only one who's noticed it, and I'd really love to know why. Or maybe the source used for the translation that made it to the wiki is wrong? At some point I'll get more energy to delve further into this, but for now it'll remain a mystery.)

Meet the Seiyuu: Dire Crowley

Crowley's voice actor Miyamoto Mitsuru has been voice acting since before many of us were born. He was inspired by a favorite TV show to become a teacher, but failed to acquire a teaching license. A friend’s college play inspired him to pursue acting instead.

In a 2014 interview Miyamoto said, ‘I would love to play a villain or eccentric role that is far removed from myself, like Tim Curry in "The Rocky Horror Show’.”

He is the voice of adult Simba in the Japanese-language-dub of Disney's ‘The Lion King’.

Miyamoto has an extensive dubbing repertoire for many overseas actors, including Ethan Hawke (Hamlet, The Magnificent Seven), Keanu Reeves (My Private Idaho, The Matrix), Brad Pitt (Interview with a Vampire, 12 Monkeys), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Down with Love) and more.

He has performed in live theater shows and TV dramas and had done dubbing work for over 300 movies/TV dramas.

He voiced Soma Ayame in the original release of Fruits Basket, Roger Smith in The Big O and other characters in over 170 other anime series, OVAs and video games.

I've watched the new trailer from the Super Mario movie, both in english (ugh, Crisp Ratt...), in spanish (proud to be from Spain atm bc the dub sounds great, and we don't have Crisp Ratt...) and in japanese (just bc I'm a huge weeb). I love it, but that's not the reason I'm writing this post rn.
