It's 1944, and Billy is on leave, but not for long. A mysterious body in a wrecked German bomber gives rise to an investigation with unforeseen consequences. A good story, with the usual historic facts woven through that give these mysteries their added appeal.

DOROTHY L SAYERS AND THE THIRTY-FOOT DRAIN: SEARCHING FOR PETER WIMSEY
James R. Benn goes on a quest to discover the original inspiration for Sayers' iconic war-weary character.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 BY JAMES R. BENN
VIA SOHO
Dorothy L Sayers was my gateway author to the world of crime fiction. I’d read the Sherlock Holmes stories earlier on, but that superlatively singular creation of Arthur Conan Doyle did not lead me any further. Holmes was unique, existing in his own universe, and there he remained. Not so with Sayers and Lord Peter Wimsey. The Wimsey family motto is “As my Whimsy takes me,” and Sayers’ whimsy took me right through her books and then onto Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham, Josephine Tey, and other authors writing in that great tradition.
Tumblr media
My Billy Boyle World War II mystery novels are often set in Great Britian, but it is not the Great Britian of the Golden Age of crime fiction. That Golden Age held sway in the interwar years, 1920 – 1939. But even then, characters like Lord Peter and Harriet Vane represented the values and way of life already shattered by the experience of the Great War. Wimsey has his roots firmly in the nineteenth century. He is graceful upon the page, but it is a grace disguising the transcendental impact of the horror in the trenches and the dreadful thinning of the population of men in so many towns and villages across the country. This is exemplified by Lord Peter’s shellshock, on full display in the first book in the series, Whose Body? where we find him firmly in the grip of vivid nightmares. His world has changed, and all the fine manners and proper deportment he can summon will never bring back the bright, golden days before 1914. In one of her short stories, Sayers has Wimsey declare his own epitaph: “Here lies an anachronism in the vague expectation of eternity.”
Even given this divide between the universe of Lord Peter Wimsey as created by Sayers and the mid-1940s of Billy Boyle and the Second World War, I’d never given up on the notion of finding some sort of intersection between these two worlds. If not a direct connection, then one at least fueled by elements common to both.  A homage that, perhaps, only I would recognize.
As I developed the plot for the eighteenth novel in my series, I decided it was time for a change of pace. This entry would be removed from the battlefield and the more exotic locales of the recent books. Since Billy Boyle and friends had never enjoyed any time off, I was overdue to grant them leave. This takes place in the quiet (fictional) village of Slewford in Norfolk, at Seaton Manor, the home of Sir Richard Seaton, father to Billy’s lover, the English spy Diana Seaton.
I had to revisit the first book in the series, Billy Boyle, to see where I had originally placed Seaton Manor. For no special reason, I had selected the county of Norfolk, on the east coast of England. Seaton Manor sits near the Wash, a bay and estuary marking a large indentation on the coastline. Tidal forces and shifting sands make the Wash treacherous for those who are unprepared for how fast and swift the tide can come in.
Tumblr media
As I studied the countryside around the Wash, it seemed oddly familiar. Then it hit me. This is the Fens, or Fenland, the setting for one of Dorothy L Sayers’ finest works—The Nine Tailors. Her fictional village of Fenchurch Saint Paul is located in Cambridgeshire, just over the border from Norfolk and close to the edge of the Wash. The Fens, a huge expanse of reeds and shallow, freshwater lakes, borders the Wash. Beginning in the seventeenth century, landowners began to drain the Fens in order to turn it into fertile farmland. By Lord Peter’s time, long drainage ditches drew water away from the fields and into the Wash. At the beginning of The Nine Tailors, such a ditch—known as the Thirty-Foot Drain—is exactly where we find Lord Peter Wimsey and his sturdy manservant Bunter.
“That’s torn it!” said Lord Peter Wimsey.
The car lay, helpless and ridiculous, her nose deep in the ditch, her back wheels cocked absurdly up on the bank, as though she were doing her best to bolt to earth, and were scraping herself a burrow beneath the drifted snow . . . right and left, before and behind, the fen lay shrouded. It was past four o’clock and New Year’s Eve; the snow that had fallen all day gave back a glimmering greyness to a sky like lead.
Now I had an intersection. My story of interrupted leave at Seaton Manor also hinged upon treacherous waters. My (first) murder victim was also found in a totally unexpected location, as was the dead gent in The Nine Tailors. Also, I was but a short distance not only from the setting of The Nine Tailors but the home turf of Dorothy L Sayers herself.
Sayers grew up in Bluntisham, Cambridgeshire, right on the edge of the Fens. From 1917 to 1928, her father was the rector at Christchurch, a tiny Fenland village with a notable Victorian church. Here, she would have become familiar with bell ringing, which forms such an important part of the plot for The Nine Tailors. She also would have understood the danger to people living in the Fens from the power of water and tides. The area is kept dry by a series of sluices and floodgates which, on the occasion of heavy rains and high tide, can overflow and wreak havoc.
I already had my own story to tell about treacherous waters and shifting tides. I’d long been fascinated by the Maid of Harlech, which is how locals in Wales refer to an American P-38 Lightning fighter plane that crash-landed just off the coast in 1942. It was only in 2007 that shifting sands and changing tides revealed it, half-buried in the mud. But the sea routinely reclaims it, only to have it appear months later.
Tumblr media
With Seaton Manor already established on the east coast, using the Maid of Harlech was out. But I did construct a plot about a German bomber that crash-landed in Norfolk and skidded off a cliff into the Wash, only to have the intense tides reveal it two years later, during Billy’s leave, along with its mysterious cargo. Just as the Thirty-Foot Drain played a key role in The Nine Tailors, so do the tides in Proud Sorrows. I could not resist inserting mention of that drain in reference to a local man brought in to hoist the wreckage out of the water. He comes to the task fresh from dredging the Thirty-Foot Drain.
Tumblr media
So, I had my intersection with Dorothy L Sayers. Thin, but enough for me. The Fens, the Wash, high waters, and a dead body in the same general vicinity as the corpse in The Nine Tailors. Subtle, but satisfying. What more could I ask for?
As it happens, one Ian Carmichael. My research turned up the fact that the actor who would portray Lord Peter Wimsey on the BBC from 1972 to 1975 had been an officer in the Royal Armoured Corps during WWII. Carmichael served with the 22nd Dragoons, landing on Juno Beach on D-Day and serving in battles across France, Holland, and Germany.
Tumblr media
The 22nd Dragoons was no ordinary unit. They were equipped with specialized Sherman Crab flail tanks. These tanks were modified with heavy chains ending in fist-size steel balls, or flails, attached to a horizontal rotating rotor mounted on two arms in front of the vehicle. They would clear a path through a minefield by slowly driving and flogging the ground ahead of them, exploding the mines. To be effective, the tanks had to drive at no more than one and a half miles per hour, often in the face of enemy fire. That was how Captain Ian Carmichael spent his war.
Tumblr media
With that intriguing bit of history tucked up my sleeve, I bring Carmichael onstage. Since the village of Slewford played host to an exclusive POW compound for high-ranking German officers, Captain Carmichael is brought in from the Continent to interrogate a prisoner about German defenses the Dragoons is facing in Holland. He encounters Billy and assists with his investigation, providing yet another Lord Peter intersection.
It would be thirty more years before Carmichael would play Lord Peter, on both radio and television programs. But in 1944, he was close to the age Wimsey is at the time of the novels. I had to work at not letting him slip into the aristocratic patter of Lord Peter, reminding myself that Carmichael was an aspiring actor from northern England, the son of an optician, not the Duke of Denver.
Tumblr media
For those fans of Dorothy L Sayers who prefer Edward Petherbridge as their Wimsey (he starred in several BBC productions during the 1980s), I can only report that he was a mere eight years old in 1944, far too young to have any role in investigating the murders in Slewford.

Book 11 of the 50 book challenge. From the Shadows by James R Benn. Book 17 in the Billy Boyle wwii historical fiction series. It had all the usual suspects plus the 442nd Regimental combat team who was made up of Japanese American soldiers from the camps in the US and from Hawaii. The book also included Jack Hemingway the son of Ernest Hemingway. The mystery was so good and I really enjoyed it a lot. It’s a great series.

Tumblr media
Story: 3.5/5 - Successfully pokes fun at gothic horror tropes and cliches, but suffers slightly from a rushed ending.

Mystery/Thriller Monday
Tumblr media
It’s 1943 in Sicily. Eddie is a former beat cop, now a Military Police Lt. at the US Army’s 11th Field Hospital. And, then Doctor Myers Stephenson is found dead. He’s ordered to investigate the murder. But, he has to do it to the backdrop of World War II. The Germans could attack at any time, everyone is tired and hot and at the ends of their ropes, and, it doesn’t help that Dr. Stephenson was not the most liked of Doctors.
It was such a good mystery, and that was combined with really intriguing characters, and then there was the setting. Oh, and it’s the first in a series too, which is exciting because I really enjoyed this historical mystery.

Thoughts at 940am....
I’ve been reading a lot lately... Basically a book a day/night
Which means I’m 100% back on my bullshit!
I’ve read some really interesting books, some really good books, and some books that are so fucking awful - they just make me angry that anyone wasted their time making these books, and I wasted my time reading them!!!!
An example of a bad book - Jeff Shaara’s To Wake The Giant.... it’s god fucking awful and should be on everyones skip pile! Yes I’m aware it has like 3-gazillion 5 star reviews on goodreads/amazon, but it's bullshit. The whole book is a piece of shit, and let me explain why! If you've ever watched a movie about Pearl Harbor, you've read this book.. but in a much better way. If you've ever read a book about Pearl Harbor... you've read a much better version of this book. If you've ever seen anyone in a Navy uniform, you already know more than dear ol' Jeff about the Navy! He basically cuts/pastes the story of Yamamoto and his admirals, his lover, and how the battle was prepared. He cuts/pastes the story of Sec. of State Hull in as well. He then creates an all new character Biggs who joins the navy in 1940. And in the most infuriating way, he'll randomly add in peripheral characters like Rochefort and a Japanese spy just because he read a book about them and decided "oh, i guess I better include them too" even if it does nothing to further the story. And that's the problem, he doesn't have a story... he is trying to tell the fictionalized non-fiction narrative of the attack, but humanize it... and fails because it's been done SOOO many times before, and he doesn't add anything new to it, and does it poorly. How poorly? He gets soooo much wrong!!!! Dates and details of the history are just glaringly wrong... but you know what's worse?? His one single new-addition to the storyline... is so fucked up.. it should be cut out completely. He did 0 research into what being in the Navy is like, what uniforms they wear and when, where they sleep and who they interact with, and just ... everything. They're not wearing their whites in December, Petty Officers are not called SIR!! after every sentence (they're enlisted men, equivalent to corporals and sergeants in other services), people who work in the sick bay don't swab the deck and paint the side of the ship, so on and so forth. But the worst part??? He spends 90% of the book leading up to the attack .. and then.. fails in his telling of it. It's over in a few pages... no real description of the valiant pilots who managed to get airborne, no talk about... anything. It happens, it's over, and then we're left with the final 8% of the book talking about Biggs recovering from injury and falling in love with a nurse who eventually leaves him blah blah blah. By that point, you're just done with it all.
On the other hand, I've read some really good books too. I'm gonna lump these two unrelated series together because they should be: Michael Pearce writes the "A Dead Man in..." series and James R. Benn writes the Billy Boyle in WWII series. Both are historical murder mysteries with a twist. Pearce writes about a detective with Scotland Yard who is assigned to the Foreign Office to investigate murders in other countries pre-WWI, right as things are heating up and the world is changing. You get a really good insight into Italy, Spain, Greece, North Africa, and the Ottoman/Muslim world.. all while trying to figure out whodunit! Benn on the other hand writes about Billy Boyle, a Boston PD detective who is assigned to Eisenhowers staff right before the North Africa invasion and is charged with solving murder mysteries and other things for General Ike throughout the war. I've read a handful so far, and he's taken part in Operation Torch and Husky, been to Ireland and Norway. Both are really well written, both give an incredible insight into the people, the history, and the time... and most importantly both are very story driven and have a story to tell!!! I really recommend the Billy Boyle book that confronts the Katyn massacre as it relates so much to what is happening today in Bucha, including how Russia attempts to cover these things up.
Another bad book was James Brady's "The Marines of Autumn" ... I had REALLY high hopes for this book, but nope... nope nope nope. It has nothing to say, nothing to offer, and it's a lifetime movie of the week version of the Korean War. And that sucks because there really are no fictional books about the Korean war beyond the Chosin Reservoir battle. It's just straight up schlock... 90% of the book is just him wishing he was home with his kid, how the military fucked him over taking him away from his kid, him missing his amazing wife with who he had that kid, but then she died having another kid, so he just wants to be with the one kid that isn't dead, and how he's still mad at the one dead kid who killed his wife, leaving him with the one kid who is alive..... and then spoiler alert... he dies at the very last possible second and never gets home to that kid. Oh and there's a little bit of the Korean war added for flavor... but just a little bit... very little... not even enough to comment on.
What I just finished last night was a book written in 1958 by Douglas Reeman. He served in the Royal Navy in WWII and Korea, and also was a cop in East End with the Met. He wrote a beloved series under the name Alexander Kent about napolenic navy stuff, but I wanted to start with his WWII stuff. The first book, A Prayer for the Ship is a really good tale about the Coastal Force and motor-torpedo boats in the channel. You can tell he served, he gets the details and attitude of the characters right, as well as the history! It's a good story that tells what it sets out to - a story about the people caught up in the event.
And that's what makes a good book to be honest... if you want to tell the story of the event, don't use a character driven fiction format unless you have the time/want/ability to flesh out the characters! Write a god damn non fiction book if you can't craft a story! If all you're doing is TELLING people stuff, vs letting them experience it through a unique perspective, then don't bother with fiction at all. I had the same complaint with P.T Deutermanns book Pacific Glory, which was another recent miss.
Oh well, at least I have some great stuff to read going through more of the Billy Boyle books (I think I'm on #7 now of 17) and the 20 or so Reeman books, as well as his Bolitho ones!
So many books.... so little time....

Book 1 of the 50: book challenge. The Red Horse by James R Benn. This is another in the Billy Boyle series. It was so great, and I didn’t guess the murderer at all. Plus they were able to get Billy’s girlfriend Diana, and Kaz’s sister Angelika were rescued from Ravensbruck concentration camp. I loved the book and I love the series a lot.

How many unreleased bootleg videos do you know of?
Ooh, a fair amount, even if we’re talking solely about Phantom. A lot of the ones on my Wants page are unreleased, I just keep them around as a reminder. Others include...
Pretty much all the Phantom videos on aurora spiderwoman’s YouTube channel. Before they hid everything. Which is great. But I remember they had a video of the original Broadway cast of Phantom and another from 1999 with Davis Gaines and Marie Danvers.
I speculated that this channel was made by a returning filmer from many years ago, and if so, then they have a ton of bootlegs that have never been released, including: several videos of David Gaschen as the Phantom, video of Hugh Panaro with Marie Danvers, video of John Cudia as the understudy Phantom on Broadway, other videos of Stephen R. Buntrock and James Romick as the Phantom, and more.
There are two videos of Earl Carpenter, one with Katie Knight Adams and one with Celia Graham, both from 2006 I believe. Unfortunately, the master was arrested, I think, before she could ever release them.
There’s a fourth video of the Las Vegas production from when it first opened, with Anthony Crivello and Sierra Boggess, filmed by the same person who filmed the other Vegas videos and who has filmed many, many Broadway and national tour bootlegs. But they never released it, feeling the quality was too low (according to their description, it’s full stage shot the entire time), and the trader has been gone for several years now.
Supposedly, there is a video of the first act of the video of Ramin Karimloo and Leila Benn Harris. However, the filmer has never released it and the only way someone knew about it was because the filmer happened to be the parent of their friend and told them. Wild.
There is the rather famous (or infamous) bootleg of John Owen-Jones, Gina Beck, and Will Barratt, from December 23, 2010, when Beck emergency covered as Christine. ‘Music of the Night’ and ‘Final Lair’ are up on YouTube. This is by the same person who filmed the David Shannon Phantom videos and the 2011 video of Love Never Dies in London. I believe they’re still around, just under a different name, so maybe one day...
As mentioned, there’s two videos of the World Tour filmed in 2013, both with Brad Little and Anthony Downing, one with Claire Lyon as Christine and one with Kristi Holden. But as said in a previous post, the trader disappeared before ever releasing the video.
One of the most prolific filmers of the Broadway Phantom production had several unreleased videos before they left trading, including: video of Paul A. Schaefer’s Raoul, a two-camera video of Hugh Panaro with Sara Jean Ford, and the 11001st show on Broadway.
This trader claims to have filmed Act One of Sierra Boggess’s final performance on Broadway, but are not selling or trading it.
Supposedly, a German filmer took, or was going to take, a video of Michelle van de Ven as Christine in the Hamburg production (they filmed three other Hamburg videos). But they were arrested and their bootlegs confiscated. This was around the same time that two other German-based bootleggers were arrested, I believe. You might have seen their videos on trading sites, between those two, we got the other Hamburg Phantom videos, very possible the Love Never Dies concert in Vienna, a bunch of London Les Miserables videos, and several videos of Elisabeth in Vienna, so that was a pretty big loss.
The person who filmed this video of Eva Tavares has filmed other videos of the restaged tour (which makes me suspect the above is only a clip of the full show), including one of Celia Hottenstein as Christine.
And there’s more, but hopefully that gives you an idea of what’s out there!

Throughout, very clearly shot with no obstructions, in a mixture of wides and closes, following the action well. I think it's shot from the front of the circle. Full/mid stage shot. Pretty Woman: The Musical - Broadway - January 16, 2019 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Samantha Barks (Vivian Ward), Adam Pascal (t/r Edward Lewis), Jennifer Sanchez (u/s Kit De Luca) NOTES: A lot of washout. Virtually no dropouts, obstructions and spotlight washout. Filmed more centre than the preview recording by the same master; mix of wides, mediums and some closeups; very good capture of the sets and actor choreography. Both are worth watching. Virtually no dropouts or obstructions. More spotlight washout than the Feb 2019 recording by the same master, but it's very minimal. Filmed at slight angle and with more closeups compared to the other recording. Very good capture of the actors' expressions. Both are worth watching. Pretty Woman: The Musical - Hamburg - September 25, 2019 (Preview) (Rumpel's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patricia Meeden (Vivian Ward), Mark Seibert (Edward Lewis), Paul Kribbe (Mr. Thompson/Happy Man), Nigel Casey (Philip Stuckey), Frank Logemann (James Morse), Maricel (Kit De Luca) Pretty Woman: The Musical - Pre-Broadway/Chicago - April 13, 2018 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Samantha Barks (Vivian Ward), Steve Kazee (Edward Lewis), Eric Anderson (Mr. Thompson/Happy Man), Jason Danieley (Philip Stuckey), Kingsley Leggs (James Morse), Orfeh (Kit De Luca) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the PreBroadway production. Action is followed well with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The first minute of the show is missing, and the next few minutes are a bit shaky with scattered blackouts, but after "The King of Broadway" it settles and the majority of the show is captured nicely. SPOILER: Before "Keep It Gay" started, when Roger says "What's the word?" someone from the audience shouted out "Gay" which sent the cast into a laughing fit. The Prom - Broadway - August 11, 2019 (Matinee) (Closing Night) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Caitlin Kinnunen (Emma Nolan), Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Michael Genet (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Courtenay Collins (Mrs. Greene), Josh Lamon (Sheldon Saperstein), Becca Lee (Kaylee), Kalyn West (Shelby), Teddy Toye (Nick), Josh Franklin (Motel Clerk), Drew Redington (Kevin), Courtney Balan (Olivia Keating), Anthony Norman, Brittany Conigatti, Fernell Hogan, Jack Sippel, Jerusha Cavazos, Joomin Hwang, Mary Antonini, Shelby Finnie, Sheldon Henry, Vasthy Mompoint NOTES: Gift upon request. Unobstructed closing performance with the full cast! Starts in the beginning of "Changing Lives" and is a little washed out. For whatever reason my camera was mad at me and didn't want to focus in the beginning of Act One. It warmed up and got better, and to be honest I opted for wider shots because everyone was doing crazy things and I didn't want to miss anything. I stood up for all but one of the standing ovations and when I did so I have no idea what my camera did or what it was looking at. I would say sorry but it wouldn't be true. I'm just so damn proud of all of these people. Please do not post this bootleg publicly! The Prom - Broadway - February, 2019 (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Caitlin Kinnunen (Emma Nolan), Josh Lamon (u/s Barry Glickman), Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Michael Genet (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Courtenay Collins (Mrs. Greene), David Josefsberg (u/s Sheldon Saperstein) NOTES: Excellent capture! Josh mistakenly mentions Alyssa in 'Tonight Belongs to You' despite not being meant to know her name at this point. The last three minutes of the show are from a different performance, during previews, with Brooks Ashmanskas as Barry and Josh Lamon as Sheldon, but it is a full video in total. The Prom - Broadway - March, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Gabi Campo (u/s Emma Nolan), Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Michael Potts (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Courtenay Collins (Mrs. Greene), David Josefsberg (u/s Sheldon Saperstein), Becca Lee (Kaylee), Susie Carroll (s/w Shelby), Teddy Toye (Nick), Drew Redington (Kevin), Courtney Balan (Olivia Keating) NOTES: This video starts at "Dance With You" and is super focused on Gabi. There are less heads in this than most of my videos and a railing that gets in the way occasionally, but they were mostly worked around. The cast as a whole is doing top notch work, though at times you can tell that Brooks and Izzy are just back from being sick. Overall this is a really great video of one of my favorite shows, and I'm really proud of myself for containing my crying at the end of act one. The Prom - Pre-Broadway / Atlanta - September 17, 2016 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Caitlin Kinnunen (Emma Nolan), Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Anna Grace Barlow (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Martin Moran (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Josh Lamon (Sheldon Saperstein) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Pre-Broadway tryout. A really touching and funny new musical, led by a hilarious cast of Broadway veterans. A perfect mix of comedy and drama.

Wartime Mysteries: a reading list
Billy Boyle by James R. Benn
Billy Boyle, a young Irish-American, cop from Boston has just made detective - with a little help from his cop relatives and friends - when World War II breaks out. His rabidly anti-English family calls on his mother's distant cousin, Mamie, married to a general, to wangle a staff job for him far from the fighting. But instead of a "safe, cushy" stateside assignment, he is ordered to London, still undergoing the Blitz. His "Uncle Ike" is Dwight D. Eisenhower, plucked from obscurity to command Army forces in Europe, and he wants Billy to be his personal investigator. Billy, who had never left Boston before he enlisted and was sent to Officer Candidate School, is not sure how good a detective he really is. But when Eisenhower asks Billy to undertake this task, he dutifully sets off for Beardsley Hall, where the Norwegian government in exile, led by King Haakon, is in residence. Accompanied by an aristocratic Polish officer in exile and a beautiful British WREN, his mission is to catch a spy who may have been planted there. A theft and two murders test Billy's investigative powers, as he comes to grips with the deadly demands of a war he never wanted any part of. To his own surprise - and that of others - Billy proves to be a better detective than any one expected.
The Shadow District by Arnaldur Indriðason, Victoria Cribb (Translation)
A deeply compassionate story of old crimes and their consequences, The Shadow District is the first in a thrilling new series by internationally bestselling author Arnaldur Indridason.
THE PAST In wartime Reykjavik, a young woman is found strangled in 'the shadow district', a rough and dangerous area of the city. An Icelandic detective and a member of the American military police are on the trail of a brutal killer.
THE PRESENT A 90-year-old man is discovered dead on his bed, smothered with his own pillow. Konrad, a former detective now bored with retirement, finds newspaper cuttings reporting the WWII shadow district murder the dead man’s home. It’s a crime that Konrad remembers, having grown up in the same neighborhood.
A MISSING LINK Why, after all this time, would an old crime resurface? Did the police arrest the wrong man? Will Konrad's link to the past help him solve the case and finally lay the ghosts of WWII Reykjavik to rest?
The Murder of Willie Lincoln by Burt Solomon
A historical fiction debut by an award-winning political journalist and Washington insider about the death of Abraham Lincoln’s son--was it illness or murder? Washington City, 1862: The United States lies in tatters, and there seems no end to the war. Abraham Lincoln, the legitimate President of the United States, is using all his will to keep his beloved land together. But Lincoln’s will and soul are tested when tragedy strikes the White House as Willie Lincoln, the love and shining light in the president’s heart, is taken by typhoid fever. But was this really the cause of his death? A message arrives, suggesting otherwise. Lincoln asks John Hay, his trusted aide—and almost a son—to investigate Willie’s death. Some see Hay as a gadfly--adventurous, incisive, lusty, reflective, skeptical, even cynical—but he loves the president and so seeks the truth behind the boy’s death. And so, as we follow Hay in his investigation, we are shown the loftiest and lowest corners of Washington City, from the president’s office and the gentleman’s dining room at Willard’s Hotel to the alley hovels, wartime hospitals, and the dome-less Capitol’s vermin-infested subbasement. We see the unfamiliar sides of a grief-stricken president, his hellcat of a wife, and their two surviving and suffering sons, and Hay matches wits with such luminaries as General McClellan, William Seward, and the indomitable detective Allan Pinkerton. What Hay discovers has the potential of not only destroying Lincoln, but a nation.
The Language of the Dead by Stephen Kelly
German bombers are arriving daily, seeking to crush England. But in a rural Hampshire village, things have remained fairly quiet—until an elderly loner, Will Blackwell, is brutally murdered. The method of his killing bears the hallmarks of the traditional vanquishing of a witch, and indeed, local legend claims that as a boy, Blackwell encountered a ghostly black dog sent from the devil, who struck a bargain for Blackwell’s soul. Not long after the murder, a young woman who is carrying the illegitimate child of a fighter pilot also is violently killed; then a local drunkard ends up in the race of an abandoned mill with the back of his head bashed in. As the Germans continue their relentless attack, Detective Inspector Thomas Lamb rushes to solve the crimes. Do the killer’s motivations lie in the murky regions of the occult?
