Being cold blooded, like snakes, is called being Exothermic, which is why amphibians and reptiles are far more common in warmer or more tropical climates.

I love Jaguars, but people in Texas somehow don’t understand what a Jaguar is and say, “a panther/leopard?” every time. Sure….Yeah, they’re panthers, but they are a specific panther, a special panther, an all-American panther. And no, they are not a leopard. They aren’t on the same continent. One has a central and southern American-given name for a reason. “True wild beast that overcomes it’s prey at a bound”(Tupi-Guarani). Yaguara, Jaguareté. They don’t attack throats to make the kill like most large cats in their family and genus. Jaguars purposely grab the skull of any prey or threat and crush the skull with their teeth. They are beautiful and terrifying and important and in major danger from human intervention in forests and poaching from European settlers. They have a rich history with Indigenous religions. Luckily, they have multiple regions in the Americas that take this seriously and have reservations and breedings programs to get their numbers back up, as scary as they are. I am glad they’re mostly in Central and Southern American countries because I don’t want to be old one day and have to explain to a child that the iconic predator is gone like the used-to-be-iconic-and-known Californian Grizzly Bear.

The jaguar's present range extends from the U.S.-Mexico border across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina, particularly in the Amazon basin. The jaguar has largely been extirpated from the United States since the early 20th century. This spotted cat most closely resembles the leopard physically, although it is usually larger and of sturdier build and its behavioural and habitat characteristics are closer to those of the tiger. The rosettes on a jaguar's coat are larger, fewer in number, usually darker, and have thicker lines and small spots in the middle that the leopard lacks. While dense rainforest is its preferred habitat, the jaguar will range across a variety of forested and open terrains. It is strongly associated with the presence of water and is notable, along with the tiger, as a feline that enjoys swimming. The jaguar is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food chain. Jaguars are powerfully built, with large, square jaws. Jaguars have lean bodies and muscular limbs. They are built for power, not speed, although they can run briefly. Height at the shoulder may be up to 75 cm. Body length is 130 to 190 cm long with a tail of 45 to 75 cm. Jaguars weigh between 65 and 125 kg. Base coat colors range from pale yellow to reddish brown, with black, rosette-shaped spots. They may also be black (a melanistic form), but then, despite being the same species, are often called panthers. These jaguars have a base coat color of black with black spots that are usually dimly visible against the black background. Black jaguars are more common in forested habitats. In captivity jaguars can live over 25 years, but in the wild they are unlikely to even reach half this age. De grootste kat van het Amerikaanse continent is de jaguar (Panthera onca). Na de tijger en de leeuw is deze kat de derde grootste van de wereld. De jaguar heeft een groot leefgebied dat zich uitstrekt van de Amerikaans-Mexicaanse grens via Midden-Amerika tot in Paraguay en Noord-Argentinië in Zuid-Amerika. Tot het begin van de 20e eeuw leefde de Jaguar ook in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten, maar daar is de soort uitgeroeid. In het Amazonegebied komen de meeste jaguars voor. Ze hebben net als tijgers een voorkeur voor waterrijke gebieden. Ze zijn ook niet bang voor water en kunnen goed zwemmen. Vrijwel ieder dier dat in het leefgebied van de jaguar voorkomt, vormt een potentiële prooi voor dit roofdier. De solitair levende jaguar is vooral in de ochtend- en avondschemering actief. Jaguars zijn krachtig gebouwd met grote sterke kaken. De poten zijn relatief kort, maar erg sterk. De staart zorgt voor evenwicht bij het springen. De vacht is lichtgeel tot roodbruin met zwarte rozetten, ronde of ovale vlekken met daarin één of twee donkere stippen. Midden op de rug verandert de rij zwarte vlekken soms in een doorlopende lijn. De hoogte bij de schouder kan oplopen tot 75 cm. De lichaamslengte is 130 à 190 cm met een staart van 50 à 75 cm. Jaguars wegen tussen de 65 en 125 kg. Naast de hiervoor beschreven lichtgeel tot roodbruin kleur is er ook een melanistische (zwarte) variant, waarbij de vlekken wel te zien zijn in de zon. Ondanks dat het dezelfde soort betreft, worden de zwarte jaguars vaak onjuist panters genoemd. Zwarte jaguars komen wat meer voor in bosrijke gebieden. Portada de mi recientemente publicado libro de cuentos: Los pasos de jaguareté michí y otros cuentos. 

El libro está conformado por cuatro cuentos. En <<Los pasos de jaguareté michí>> el personaje principal es una mujer que participó de la Guerra del Chaco primero como criada, ayudando al patrón, y luego curando las heridas de los caídos en combate. Luego se hizo enfermera tras la guerra.

En el cuento << Pe salvador… (Eduvigis)>> doña Tomasina, relata las vivencias de una mujer (Eduvigis) que para acompañar a su esposo se rapa la cabellera y lo sigue al combate (bajo el nombre de soldado Fulgencio González). En una de las batallas su hombre muere en sus manos y ella sigue en combate hasta que la trasladan a la retaguardia y allí descubre la enfermera Tomasina que, en realidad, es una mujer.

En el relato <<Chiquito>> también se narra sobre una mujer que se hizo pasar por hombre para participar de la guerra, pues no se les permitía hacerlo como soldados, sino como enfermeras. Con una participación destacada fue conocida por su menuda complexión que le valió el mote de “chiquito”. Pero eran sus dotes como curandera, chamán e inteligencia poco común las marcas más profundas que aún en la vejez conserva, en momentos que el periodista de un medio local la entrevista y es en ese contexto que se narran sus peripecias.

En <<Silencios de la guerra>> un comunicador entrevista a un hombre mayor que es arisco a compartir sus vivencias en la Guerra del Chaco. Sobre todo, porque no logra conciliar el sueño como quisiera, y se repiten, noche tras noche, una serie de pesadillas de la guerra.

La jaguareté Luna era muy cabezuda. Y se rememora varios de sus escapes. "Ella saltaba la muralla. Una vez se fue a la casa de nuestra vecina del costado y le rompió todos los muebles, tuvimos que pagar todito. Y otra vez se escapó y cuando le encontramos estaba frente al supermercado Mundimark".
