Never have I ever wanted to slut shame a man so bad ever since Albert Camus
Tumblr media
But like seriously, go watch the movie. It’s very good and demonstrates a man who is holding himself accountable and regretting the fact that he will be burning in hell in the afterlife. Cillian Murphy’s acting is superb and I was totally watching the movie because of him.
Of course, this movie is from Oppenheimer’s perspective, so you won’t see much on the people who were affected. I wished there’s more to highlight on it to show how much he was damned for the rest of his life, but I don’t think Christopher Nolan is the best director in on this subject. One thing got to be noted is that the movie itself does not glorify nuclear weapons and it highlights a lot on Oppenheimer’s own guilt on being the chief architect of this weapon of mass destruction.
Oh yes, by the way, this dude’s a white cishet male left-leaning intellectual who smokes too much so he deserves to be slut-shamed.

Vengeance (2022, dir. B.J. Novak) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Vengeance seemed very well-intentioned. The debut feature from The Office breakout B.J. Novak (who you probably know better as Ryan), Vengeance tells the story of a self-absorbed New York journalist/wannabe podcaster named Ben who, as a result of a misunderstanding, goes to West Texas to attend the funeral of a girl who, outside of hooking up with her a few times in the past, he knows nothing about. After the funeral, the older brother of the girl (played by a fully dedicated Boyd Holbrook), based on nothing but "gut," tells Ben that his sister did not die of an overdose like the reports say, but that she was murdered and they need to avenge her death. So that's the setup.
The family of Abilene, the girl who died, is made up of a cast of borderline-caricatures that are all dislikable, but lovable in their own ways, and each get their moment to shine throughout the movie. I say borderline because, from an insider's perspective they'd seem ridiculously overblown, and from an outsider's perspective they might seem just fine. However, being from Texas (although, according to the film, "Dallas isn't Texas"), and having family members that live in a more rural area of the state (although my family is from East Texas, not West), a lot of the way they're written is 100% right on the money. There are just a couple of moments where they tipped over into straight parody. Outside of the family, there are a large cast of characters, all mostly incompetent and of no help, except for Ashton Kutcher's character, small-town record producer Quentin Sellers, who is the first person to really break Ben's narcissistic and jaded shell. Kutcher excells the movie forward and almost feels like a breath of fresh air from all the "haha funny country" people in the movie.
Some of the jokes land, some of them don't, some of them will make you roll your eyes, and you never really feel a deep, emotional connection with any one particular character until getting close to the end of the movie, and the film never misses a chance to turn a heartwarming moment into one of bleak, grim realism. Again, sometimes this works, other times you wish the moment had just been allowed to be heartwarming. For the most part, the film is good. The parts that work, work well, and again, Novak seems very well-intentioned with what he was trying to say. Sadly, he makes the movie tackle so many different subjects and tries to say so much about them that the messages end up getting muddled by the time the credits start to roll. Novak is a director to watch, though, and I'll be excited to see whatever his second attempt is now that he's got one under his belt.
Score: 7/10
Currently streaming on Peacock.
Worth it for the hilarious cameo scene with John Mayer at the very beginning alone.

Dear John
What a masterpiece, possibly one of the best songs she has ever written. I am not big on the WiUwiUUWii guitar in the beginning tho, please don’t cancel me if that is an unpopular opinion. But this song is so fucking powerful. Oh my god. I read this to my therapist (not because I was in a relationship with an inappropriate age gab, I wasn’t, I just think the lyrics are awesome and I need everyone to hear them) also the way she name-dropped j*hn m*yer without namedropping him was genius and not cheap at all, if you disagree get a less basic name. Even tho j*hn m*yer is my nemesis we will leave him be for now because I absolutely agree with Taylor that this should not be about her exes. It’s like some of you care more about them than about the actual music. Usually, I also do feel a little bit bad for those guys because obviously she writes about her subjective experience and I think it is kind of unfair to attack someone you don’t know over that, especially when it happened a decade ago, if someone was a bad boyfriend to her, she gets to be mad, but not us. I however truly believe j*hn is a bad person and I think anyone can be mad at him for that, I just also believe, despite all of his whining, he wants us to attack him, why else would he complain about lover lyrics like this whole fandom doesn’t despise him? Also, Taylor knows that everyone leaves their Christmas lights up until January, it’s about appreciating the mundane things in a relationship because some exes made her feel like the floor could fall through at any second and every blue sky could turn to rain JOHN. He just needs a piece of her success huh? It’s giving bloodsucker, fame fucker (I know he was like super successful when they dated, idc, not to me). Soo, I guess I did not leave him be… Sorry, the man is just soo irritating to me, I also don’t think he makes good music, my only piece of evidence for that is that once I was buying shoes and listening to speak now (the album, but I had also just reached that song in the album) and I took my earphones out and thought the music in the store was horrible and I usually don’t think stuff like that, but then the chorus came on and it said something about somebodies body being a wonderland and I know that that’s a j*hn m*yer song because emma stone screams about it in friends with benefits. So I am assuming that was his song and I hated it before I could be biased against him (I was so happy when I left the store and could finally put my earphones back in and Dear John came on) I also despise the song he wrote about Taylor, I once saw a video of him performing it and it sounded awful. Anyway sorry for that rent, but I will now forget that this man exists and return to Taylors incredible music again.
