FMA sketches by Ace Attorney's character designer, Iwamoto Tatsuro
For the past week, Iwamoto-san has been posting sketches of FMA characters on his twitter as a part of his daily sketching challenge and they are absolutely BEAUTIFUL.
I really want to share his art over here and also translate his posts for you all because I think his commentaries are quite insightful for people who are interested in character design!
[Those who know their AA lore would recognize him as who voiced Edgeworth (Mitsurugi) in the games :3]

If you draw your favourite things out you will know them better! So, this is Edward Elric from #FullmetalAlchemist.
Even if you have decided on the pose you want to draw, it is better to sketch out these three first:
the moment before the pose is struck
the pose itself
the moment after the pose is struck
then decide which image works better for your art. I learned this from a really great senior of mine, and it is very solid advice.

I like it when the machine part has a distinctly different silhouette compared to the human body, so I added some original ideas to the design.

Realising the butt flap/cape didn’t actually connect to the upper jacket is a shocker to me.

...or so I thought, until I realized how King Bradley and Kimblee during the Ishval war had a different overcoat design, in which they actually wore a single long coat instead of a separated upper and bottom set.

When his clothes were unbuttoned, there was something that looked like an additional button on his right chest... I wonder if it could be fastened from the back?

I like how each character's personality was expressed through the way they dress. Contrary to his appearance, this person was very intelligent, which makes him such a great character.

So I read that apparently the one who designed Pearl Fey was looking at Ojamajo Doremi and honestly...Yeah, I can kind of see it.
She wouldn't look too out of place in this.

I planned on drawing some Ace Attorney character studies this month. I've still had Hades on my mind though, and I thought about.... maybe... blending the two?
That's as far as I got, but IT WAS ENOUGH TO WARRANT TRYING SOMETHING. Initially the outfit was going to be a blend of both their appearances. I didn't like it. So it's just Meg's usual look but in the Franziska pose from promo art.

Valentine's Day and White Day Gyakuten Snapshot Translations

Hello, I'm the second illustrator for "Ace Attorney", Tatsuro Iwamoto. I will be drawing Ace Attorney in this space for a bit. Thank you for having me! The theme for this first commemorative illustration is "Valentine's Day". As the 2 members of the Fey family don't really understand the relationship between chocolate and valentines day very well, Larry and Edgeworth are called to help. It has that sort of vibe, doesn't it? Larry, who is skilled with his hands, is the general manager, while in contrast it seems that Edgeworth is forced to do the menial work. Pearls must have been the one that inspired Maya with the existence of Valentine's Day. Everyone, please imagine all sorts of things. It's also about characters that aren't present. For example, Lotta probably came to sell stolen photos of Phoenix under the guise of materials for making the chocolate. Detective Gumshoe could be about to smell the chocolate and rush in. And I wonder if Oldbag is making her own chocolate bust of Edgeworth.
The theme for the second drawing is "White Day", which has become an illustration in response to the previous theme of "Valentines Day". The fact that Edgeworth is serving Maya and Pearls means that Edgeworth may have received chocolate from the girls. The Steel Samurai on top of the cake was likely made by Larry. If Franziska was invited, does that mean she gave chocolates as well? Wright is… He might be unsatisfied with how small he is in the illustration despite being the main character. By the way, what kind of sweets are generally gifted on white day? I feel like there was speculation that in the past, marshmallows were given, but I haven't heard that lately. I had a lot of trouble deciding what Edgeworth would have to give.

Gumshoe: Thanks for the quick postcard! I was surprised by the expression on prosecutor Edgeworth's face when making the Wright-style chocolate, wow!*

Postcard 2:
Edgeworth: Hmm. An Ace Attorney orchestra concert?
Gumshoe: I have to eat instant noodles every day in order to go to this concert!
Edgeworth: More importantly, it seems that Justice has an announcement as well, so I'm looking forward to it.
*tn: I assume Gumshoe is expressing shock-- he uses an expression for when one is taken aback and thinks something is amazing, terrible, etc. Could be like "the face you made was amazing!"

They are probably leaning into the Storm God archetype considering how despite usually having more faithful or better portrayals of demons and Gods in DX2, Zeus still acts like a Japanese delinquent like he does in V or SJ, much like Demeter is two faced evil as well. Zeus tried to conquer the world and cull humanity in a new “Trojan War” he plotted to create until he got his butt kicked. Period/Marduk similarity admits he was going to conquer humanity by his actions at the end.
Honestly it’s weird, DX2 is spot on with Angra Mainyu or Mara being evil and how the former consistently has new evil schemes to regain his power, but when it comes to handling other deities they can miss badly or be more faithful to their mythology than SMT usually is. (I usually don’t mention the characters as it’s usually anime tropes. But even those can be done well based on the event or story).
Anyways sorry about rambling about things in DX2. It has a lot of flaws, but it does have good events with demons and also even uses its anime tropes pretty good on occasion. The Take Back The City events have been fantastic since they started last year, especially as they tend to be alignment themed.
Yeah, my impression until recently was that Dx2 treats of myth with at least marginally more care than you would expect from the series of late. But the writers are in the unenviable position of churning out story after story to support the game as it plods along for however many years it remains effective in extracting surplus value from its player base.
In other words, we'll inevitably see recycled every tired plot, every dumbass equivocation or deluded interpretation that has plagued the series since its inception. Just to keep the blood flowing. And with no recourse to new designs to service bespoke scenarios beyond the occasional new-to-you Kaneko design from 1994, all that's left is to prod Tatsuro Iwamoto into contributing yet another career-worst character design. Marduk/Period is just a really funny case because, look at him. lol. lmao.
As to the other asks that I received about this: I just don't have that much to say on any single topic from this game that I never intend to play. But I've read them all and agree! Thanks for the interest.

i swear some ppl are so good at simulating an urban landscape with a couple of lines and i can't kkkk. but practice makes perfect so i did a couple more doodles ºuº, this time with a normal kay in earlier stages of production, figuring out scaling and camera shots (and the costume wasn't finished yet :v)
