You know how they say a parent should never outlive their child?

There is a strange kind of sadness in loving a fictional universe that the author is thoroughly sick of but has to be nice when asked about it. That universe is very, very dead, but the author has to pretend it isn’t, that they still love it, that they might go back to it any day now.

It’s not the same, but it kind of feels the same.
