fav campaign and why

oh god im no good at having feelings or opinions so ill just go down a list rattling off my experiences with the campaigns

for the record from the start ive been cheating, ive Never played this game blind. id consumed a lot of rain world playthrough medias before playing it (im not good at playing games in the sense that i simply do not experience them- im a speedrunner at heart... or not competitive or intelligent, im just walking fast paced from start to end...) and when i did play i always had a map and the wiki open which i think diminishes some of the feeling. but i still had fun moving from place to place

SURVIVOR: its classic. its sweet. its fun. i played about halfway through myself, but the second half i completed with my "Boyfriend" so i remember it as being very entertaining as we both fumbled around and learned together. it serves its purpose well and i think anything i enjoy about rain world can be seen in the survivor campaign at least to start off with... 10/10 nothing special but no loss by playing it yknow. ive also done an outer expanse + baby run (ftr if you want baby fast before going to outer expanse, live in industrial for a while. cannot compete with that pup spawn rate + you can easily make the rounds to check like 5 shelters a cycle before its anywhere near over) which yes -_- did make me cry.

MONK: i.. dont like playing monk. friendliness from other creatures does not mean much to me when actively hostile creatures are near impossible to kill because my spear can travel one (1) slugcats worth in distance so i would not play this with my fairly aggressive play style... i only played it for the short time itd take to get to outer expanse and. again. yes. i cried -_- i think its very sweet, and i am like. (clinically) psychotically attached to monk where its very important to my heart BUT Its not fun as a game experience to me

HUNTER: i tried to jolly co op cheat and play as arti to finish this as i find arti the easiest to play as but i kept crashing which is. you know. very bad for the single campaign where you want to be losing the least so ive never made much progress with this one and i genuinely dont want to open hunter back up because of the crashing. i THINK This was because i was playing w the sunhat mod because ive never experienced that magnitude of crashing constantly and uninstalled it after and have not experienced that again until... well youll read later

GOURMAND: i played this one from the start with my "Boyfriend" and so again it was fun from that, ESPECIALLY because he played as artificer and so was essentially my chariot throughout the campaign... easy way to beat gourmands exhaustion: make your partner carry you. shrimple. its SO fun to beat the shit out of creatures and i do like being forced to just take a moment and walk around slowly, i havent found his exhaustion toooo terrible if youre just patient except when youre fighting creatures that have health enough that you cant kill them in one hit. but being able to just slam something to death is SO satisfying, i enjoyed it. HOWEVER, ive never actually gotten to the END (Due to "Boyfriend" availability, we've stopped just outside the outer expanse gate). and of course, yes, every single fucking time i watch someone go into outer expanse i CRY LIKE A BABY. the first i think DOZEN times i watched people go through outer expanse, id start WAILING whenever i just saw slugcat npcs, it tugs and tears at my heart strings so badly. youre not alone. youve spent a campaign or two trudging through a wasteland empty of kind relatable figures but youre HOME now, just as you left it, and everyones so happy to see you back. im crying now . (do i just cry a lot? Maybe. im at an emotional point in my life... be nice.) 12/10 above survivor def, and gourmands my most favorite to play as in expedition- cant argue with that combat system + exhaustion isnt too bad for me + i love the variety of the world, its not impossibly difficult while not being easy.

ARTIFICER: ive never finished revenge route, ill be going to a different save file to try and it now, instead ive finished the ascension route. i know arti can be... extremely frustrating to play because its hitting a wall again and again and again but i really didnt have too much trouble approaching it knowing i had to be prepared to die + using my map a lot ("WTF this game is so unfair i cant see enemies about to shoot me!" Use Your Map. use your map and slug senses) + of course... ample map skills so im not ambling and getting like im getting lost and dying for nothing. though i will say, i did nearly give up at exactly the end- i think its the camera scroll mod but subterranean made the game near unplayable. like 0.5 frames per second, computer screaming, crashing i think a half dozen times again in an area where i NEEDED the karma to the point where i had to passage in place so i could ascend, and then crashing i think thrice while i was in the depths, including not allowing me to see the end cutscene... specifically that huge room with the big pit would grind the game to a halt i think because its so large and all the enemy AI, and all the spiders and centipedes are a nightmare and i just... hated it. every other leg of the game was fine, rewarding, heart touching but dear fucking lord, subterranean isnt more difficult or intriguing its just "the games not going to play smoothly at all and heres 5000000 ridiculously enemies". i WANT to love it, you know i love arti, but its just impossible to play if you want to ascend. and of course revenge route is crazy short which feels bad. removed from my experiences though, i think its beautiful with the one caveat that revenge route is TOO short. ive watched way too many people who were interested in the lore never get to even the third dream because theres just not enough shelters if you run straight to metropolis, which makes me sad. but the story generally is beautiful and i love it (and i could talk about it later, some of the things people say about arti makes me.. insane. either that shes totally righteous in her actions, or that her pups deaths are her fault)

SPEARMASTER: playing this one while cheating both using the map to plan exactly the route you need and to go through precipice as arti for the double jump + to swallow the pearl made it an absolute dream. yes the world is very scary but you can avoid a lot of the worst parts by simply not being there <3 one part: i did forget to change back to spearmaster before going to moon and she did crash my game so . remember to do that. very good campaign both for me to have played without doing anything as intended (never touched a broadcast), combat is fun, but also a very good story. i really like five pebbles and... i cannot get into the degree of five pebbles apologist i am i genuinely cant detail this without going off the rails. regardless; much 2 think about.

RIVULET: never played this one + not playing this one very scary looks bad dont want it. no rot no underwater sections no thank you. wont touch it. wont look at it. thank you

SAINT: hesitant to play this one due to the adventure aspect though i already got all echoes with arti so it cant be that bad- of course the story aspect of it all cannot be understated and it fully shattered my world view when i got into it. rain worlds live and die messaging has really helped me through suicidal and delusional periods and im very glad for what can be gleaned from saints story so i do like it a lot. as ive said before its also so amazing how a game with little to no tutorial text or cutscenes can have numerous jaw drop moments (with max karma reveal and descent into rubicon)

man i dont wanna be that guy, but the skyblock wars thing on the legundo community server is so just. incredibly frustrating to play rn

like, disregarding my own wifi issues entirely, bc theyre a seperate ongoing problem, lapis is mostly composed of younger players and people with actual jobs and stuff, and then redstone has. every moderator except 1, and two of the best pvpers who literally like never log off.

im not gonna accuse mods of using mod perms to cheat, because i gen dont think they are, but speraking as someone who has experience on several servers being mod/build staff, it is functionally impossible to be without bias as a mob in a competitive setting, especially when its, yknow, every single mod except one versus a team mostly composed of 12 year olds. hell, one of our players is literally 8.

and. i mean it sucks. its not enjoyable to play anymore when the other team is making fun of us for things out of our control and the mods arent really doing anything about it bc its their teammates doing it. and then theres stuff like the cobble challenge, where their entire island was basically already stone brick from the start. im not saying its cause the mods knew that was gonna be the challenge, but i am saying im not ruling it out. and then we know the mods fly around occasionally, and yeah they tell us that its for actual mod purposes, and i believe them, but i also believe that if they were to notice some new builds or farms or whatever while they were they theyd 100% mention it to their team.

and again, even disregarding that, even if im just off my rocker and everything ive noticed as unfair and upsetting is just in my own brain, theres the fact that the other team is gonna listen and respect the members of the mod staff more bc they have a real, tangible power over them, where as random children just arent gonna listen to syl even if they were the one voted in to be the leader. they gonna listen to a mod, but not another player. thats a real, tangible advantage they have.

i dont wanna say the mods cant also play the game and have fun, because they can! its totally possible to do smth like this and still let them play! but they need to be split up evenly between the teams or is gonna cause the issues we're currently having. no one on lapis is having fun or wants to play anymore really. poor syl has cried on call. i dont really care how many times people say its just a game. youre saying that because your team is winning, your team is tacked, your team has all the good pvpers and moderators. if lapis was in the lead youd be upset and i know it, because wth this new base quest that just finished you went and whined to ecr because hyper used an existing base on your island to win the quest. he asked ecr and got an explicit yes, and dino and justin ran to ecr about it and now we each got half a point, basically voiding the quest.

im glad yall are havin fun because no one else is. lmao

ive never read any of the books but i really liked the movie w brad pit & tom cruise; it was really good!! super fun def recommend…i tried 2 watch queen of the damned but i didnt really like the actor they got 4 lestat so i didnt finish it💔💔 honestly thats fair LOL plus most tats have meaning thats really personal & specific to that person i really like ozzys tats esp his ozzy finger tats like that is sooo iconic joan jetts are also so so sick & i liked kirk hammets flame hip tats but he removed them i think … which i totally get but i liked how kind of trashy they were & i kind of want something similar for myself LOL continuing w the body mod questions, do you want any piercings? do you have any already? -❄️

i just have a pair of single lobe piercings rn but i would love to get a second one (haven't decided if i'll get both or just one) and my best friend has turned me on to wanting to get a helix piercing, but most of all i want an eyebrow piercing! even though they take a pretty long time to heal, and even though they're a bitch to clean i love them and think they're so hot!! i REFUSE to get anything below the neck tho haha

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - Nintendo DS, January 11th

A quirky adventure game where you are fucking dead, and you gotta work out who killed you. Ghost Trick is like Ace Attorney at first glance - it looks similar, and is made by effectively the same development team. Give it a shot on iOS.

Dead Space 2 - Multiplatform, January 25th

Dead Space 2 was the undisputed king of alien horror until Alien: Isolation released. Yeah, you battle massive acid-spitting aliens, but it’s the necromorph babies you’re gonna be shit-scared of. It isn’t quite as unique as it’s predecessor, but it’s definitely much better to play. Bring your brown pants.

The Nintendo 3DS Releases - March 27th

The 3DS was like magic when you first fired the 3D slider all the way up - then it became a gimmick you never used again. Releasing with a few decent launch titles and being able to boast Street Fighter IV as playable, the 3DS arguably didn’t really pick up much steam until a few months after launch. While more powerful than the original DS which was six years old at the time, I can’t remember being particularly interested in it at the time.

Portal 2 - Multiplatform, April 19th

Valve’s final single player experience until their jump into VR was a bloody good one - very funny and amusingly written with the best Steve Merchant performance since The Ricky Gervais Show, Portal 2′s puzzle solving adventure is rarely a chore to play through, and has thousands of custom maps courtesy of the Steam community.

L.A. Noire - Multiplatform, May 17th

Rockstar’s foray into adventure games has stood the test of time as an enjoyable and often startling journey nto the seedy underbelly of 1947 Los Angeles - as Cole Phelps you’ll threaten a Jewish man with the gas chamber, arrest a paedophile instead of a clearly guilty father, quote Hamlet to a prop skull at the scene of a car crash, destroy thousands of dollars of property, and yell at a child whose mother’s just been murdered. Great fun!

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Windows

CDPR hit it out of the park with a fantastically improved sequel to 2007′s Eurojank diamond in the rough The Witcher, and really introduce Geralt of Rivia to more people for the first time with this game. A branching story that sees Geralt hunting Letho, the killer of King Foltest, and allying either with smelly hippy elven leader Iorveth and his terrorists who don’t appear in the sequel or the very cool but quite racist Vernon Roche and his special forces group, who are supporting characters in the sequel.

Alice: Madness Returns - Multiplatform, June 14th

A surprisingly charming, unsettling dive into the fractured psyche of the Victorian equivalent of an actual goth gf, Alice is a sequel to American McGee’s Alice from 2000. Surreal as fuck and absolutely drowning in atmosphere. Just don’t look at any of the YouTube comments on videos of the soundtrack. Rather bizarre show...

Duke Nukem Forever - Multiplatform, June 14th

Sometimes it’s best NOT to bet on the Duke. I bought this game to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I did neither - DNF is fucking boring, and I blame it ALL on Randy Pitchford’s devotion to ruining things I like. DNF could’ve been brilliant - either embrace your heritage like Doom Eternal would eventually do, or make it into a “last hurrah” kind of thing where Duke realises he’s getting old and can’t kick ass forever. The greatest disappointment of the 2010s so far - but worse would follow with it. The King is dead - hail to the King, baby.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Multiplatform, August 23rd

The piss-tinted prequel to 2000′s excellent conspiracy RPG Deus Ex, Human Revolution is like smashing Robo-Cop into a world where Detroit is not a humanitarian disaster zone. Adam Jensen, the gravelly-voiced biomechanically enhanced security chief of David Sarif, is dragged into a world of American conspiracies involving FEMA death camps, the government enforcing martial law in US cities and massive Chinese conglomerates plotting to control the world. Just like real life! DXHR is my favourite in the series for its design, atmosphere and narrative.

Dead Island - Multiplatform, September 6th

Eh. Wasn’t that good. Notable for having the most misleading fucking trailer since Metal Gear Solid 2, but nowhere near as fulfilling upon release. An open world zombie survival game with a focus on melee weapons more fragile than your granny’s second hip. Oh great, now there’s a dead kid on my page. Thanks, Techland!

Driver: San Francisco - Multiplatform, September 6th

A game you literally can’t buy anymore, DSF was incredible to play when it came out and has only really gotten better with time. It’s still so unique for a driving game that I’m surprised Ubisoft have had the good sense to just leave it and not go pants-on-head retarded with the franchise since. Nick Robinson had to buy Subway gift cards just to purchase this game.

Batman: Arkham City - Multiplatform, October 18th

Arkham City was so cool at launch and it still is today. A proper Batman epic with twists, turns, and the most addictive combat arena for years. This whole thing is gold from start to finish, except for the Harley Quinn DLC. I can’t even go into detail about it here, but I fucking LOVE this game.

Sonic Generations - Multiplatform, November 1st

Sonic Generations is the best Sonic game since 3 & Knuckles, but has now unfortunately convinced Sega that not only do people despise the Adventure games, they also really want to see Classic Sonic and Green Hill EVERY GODDAMN DAY. Generations is like a proper celebration of Sonic’s history, even including stuff from every reviewer’s favourite punching bag Sonic 2006 - I really like Generations and it has a stellar modding scene on PC.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception - Sony PlayStation 3, November 1st

The “finale” of the Uncharted series until Naughty Dog decided it wasn’t. Uncharted 3 may not be as tight as Among Thieves, but it’s just as enjoyable. As quipping invincible action hero Nathan Drake, you’ll ruin historical artifacts and “incapacitate” about 4000 guys in your quest to find Iram of the Pillars, chased by Cruella de Ville and her mercenary squad of a million faceless Englishmen.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Multiplatform, November 8th

God I was so excited for this. World War 3 never looked cooler, and then it came out - and it wasn’t that good. It didn’t feel as epic as MW2, not as well-written as MW, and not as interesting as World at War and Black Ops. Multiplayer was... fine? I think this is the point where most people realised that Call of Duty was basically downhill from here.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Multiplatform, November 11th

See this paragraph? You can read it. Another installment in Bethesda’s cross-franchise “Little Lies” series, Skyrim has been released more times than China’s created a pandemic. But it’s still really good and when you rub it the right way it comes all over your screen like a particularly excited storyteller, ready to point in the direction of adventure.

Super Mario 3D Land - Nintendo 3DS, November 13th

Yeah this was the point I decided I wanted a 3DS. It looked incredible and so fluid, and it really was! Playing this was great fun. That’s really all there is - I can’t be funny about it, nor overly critical. What do you want from me?

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations - Multiplatform, November 15th

I didn’t like this when it came out - I thought the new graphic style was bad, Constantinople was dull, and the music was too different. Ezio was angrier, older, and the complete lack of any supporting cast from Brotherhood had me thinking this was a game that nobody wanted to work on - but now that I’m older, I can see this for how good it really was. Revelations blends the Ezio and Altair stories together, culminating in a satisfying emotional climax.

Minecraft - Windows, November 18th

There’s something beautiful about those early builds of Minecraft. Quiet, unassuming, and riddled with potential for exploration. I could talk for hours about the first time I was thrown into Mojang’s survival experience, about how I still get a bit weepy hearing Wet Hands by C418, about how shit-scared I still am of the mines and caves. Minecraft is immortal, and always will be.

Bullet Time

Summary: A shooting that shouldn't have happened. A bullet which hit the wrong person. Friends getting scared, a nurse crying. Blood pouring in droplets on everything it touches. In the midst of it all: Angie, her feelings and what could be her biggest sin. Perhaps she did kill a man today.

Drip, drip, drip.

Standing there was a nurse, frozen, when everything unfolded right before her eyes. Her body, whose reflexes were usually as sharp if not sharper than a brand-new high-end scalpel’s blade, had given up on her, refusing to move when she should have been able to do something. The moments right before repeated on loop in her mind, racing, the intense beating of her heart resonating from the top of her skull to the ends of her toes.

Drop by drop, blood fell to the ground, having poured in a splash in a moment, then settled to just flow from its hole, gently, rapidly, drip drip drip. A part of it had tainted her uniform, making the colour go from a pastel, reassuring pink to a menacing crimson, hair dressed on her arms and legs. It continued dripping along in deafening metronome-like rhythm, drip drip drip, slowly making its way through her nerves, eating away at her sanity. Still paralyzed, she was unable to do anything about it, drip drip drip.

A red puddle was forming at the feet of the person in front of her, blue uniform left untouched from the back, drop by drop. Tears formed inside her eyes, threatening to exit as her sight blurred beyond recognition, preventing her from further hurting herself like that when she was still immobile and defenceless, as if the world was going to come for her throat next and that she’d be dead before she’d be able to realize that. Drip, drip, drip.

This someone in front of her, the shield with his arms stretched in front of her like the statue of a protective deity of an old city, gagged, desperate for air. He dropped to his knees, more blood pouring on the ground in raspy coughing fits, making her face the muzzle of Nemesis staring at her eyes with fury burning inside their irises and reddened sclerae. A shiver went down her back, making her tremble in either anticipation or rage, her legs tensed and her arms finally moving, fingers operational, waiting for the next move she’d decide to make.

In the desperation of a situation gone out of her control, in the back alley, stood a young woman who happened to be a nurse with more than a simple licence. As if the sound of her colleague gagging had made her break out of her trance, she made her first real move, sidestepping in a hope, using the darkness to her advantage, grabbing the man with the gun from behind and making him fall to the ground in a single swoop.

The weapon fell in a metallic click on the strangled sidewalk, letting go of its other bullet, piercing the nightly air and flying to the sky at an unbelievable speed. She had seen bullets before, she wasn’t scared anymore. The man was unconscious, maybe dead, but that was beyond her care or attention. For the first real time in her life, it felt like a death that’d have been deserved and, even if it made her a murderer, then she’d be a justified one. There was no mercy for those who brought death upon innocent lives.

In a swift move of her right hand, she typed a very familiar three-unit phone number, fingers moving almost on their own. Her voice, her words, her gestures were all automatisms: she barely listened to what the other people told her unless it was vital information, a way to estimate how messed up the situation really was. Her own former colleagues felt like they were all robots she was speaking to because she was behaving like one, like a machine not to collapse under the weight of her own anxiety flaring in her chest, the incessant beating of her pounding heart and the fears she was overcome with. The voices were familiar and foreign all the same, a hiccup escaped her lips, and the phone almost slipped out of her hands as she fell to her knees.

The tears exited her eyes, rolled onto her cheeks, fell to the ground.

Drip, drip, drip.

It was a calm evening at Hope Hospital, glad to see there barely were any activity in the emergency department on that night. Desert corridors, nurses going home or arriving for the nightly shift, goodbyes and hellos, good nights and good evenings exchanged. A serenity out of the ordinary which, truly, should have made him much more alert because, as it stood, every calm has a storm following it.

Truth be told, Greg wanted to go home, especially when the shift he shared with Cybil was nearing its end. Did he arrange their shifts to match out of pure personal pleasure and medical efficiency? Yes. Did he regret it, even as he glanced at the clock either for it to turn to midnight or for something to jump at them? No. Perhaps he was as infatuated in his anaesthetist as his latest, former student was in his nurse the last time he saw the two of them around.

As such, Cybil and he were simply enjoying a nice conversation on how life was, allowing himself to disclose a few embarrassing childhood stories about Sidney to someone who had worked with his brother before at Caduceus. It felt nice to have a breath of fresh air, once in a while, so he avoided glancing at the clock or his watch too much and profited from the tranquillity surrounding them, hoping to maybe tell Cybil how pretty she was again and how much he enjoyed talking to her and… Yeah. Definitely infatuated, the diagnosis was obvious enough.

Cybil didn’t seem like she was too upset about the calm either. The stories about the day where Sidney, the Sidney Kasal who always said he’d never lose a fight because he had never lost any argument in his life from the crib to obtaining his high-ranked chair at Caduceus USA, messed up on something and was panicked about what their parents would say made her smirk, then laughed, until they were unable to stop giggling like little mischievous kids around the cherished coffee table of their staff room.

The storm soon enough came back, though, as it always did in the life of head surgeon Greg Kasal.

Amanda Marsh, their latest recruit whom had joined them after Angie Thompson’s departure for Caduceus, burst the door of the staff room open, eyes gone wide, beads of sweat on her forehead and temples, limbs trembling. This didn’t immediately faze either specialist: young nurses usually were easy to impress, even Angie had been overwhelmed when she had had a patient flatline on her before. However, this meant going back to work soon, so he got up from his chair to face her.

“Dr Kasal, Dr Myers, we… We have a patient in!!” she yelled, on top of her lungs, despite being otherwise breathless (or so it seemed, he supposed).

Greg and Cybil exchanged glances, before looking back at her.

“We’ll get ready, bring us to them, okay?”

Amanda nodded and the three of them left for the emergency wing of the hospital. Storms had different sizes, from the small whirlwind to the ferocious typhoon nobody escaped from on its tracks. Secretly, considering this was the end of the shift and that the length of the day was starting to take a slightly toll on him, Greg quietly hoped this would be one of the smaller storms, that it’d be an easy job he couldn’t mess up. Was this asking too much from a world where GUILT had been eradicated?

Yes.

“Here’s the chart, Dr Kasal! Please make it quick, the patient is in a critical condition!” she gave him the papers he needed before running away into the operating room.

“I’ll join her,” Cybil told him as she had gotten her scrubs on. “You study that, I’m going to make them sleep.”

“Got it, I’m on my way.”

The chart on a chair as he prepped himself for the last surgery of the day, the one before his workmate came for the shift, he quickly read through it. The patient was a twenty-seven-year-old man, relatively tall and slim, otherwise with no specific condition. He had taken a bullet to the left lung, possibly having a rib or two damaged from it entered his body, where it had stayed. He finished getting ready when the topic of heavy blood loss and internal haemorrhage came on, prompting him to operate as soon as possible.

Once in the operating room, the grimmer face of Cybil and Amanda’s nervousness didn’t make it any easier to convince himself this was going to be an easy end of the day, despite how simplistic removing a bullet was compared to treating GUILT. An IV was inserted into the patient’s wrist, monitored by the nurse, vitals displayed on a screen at 40. Not good, of course, but nothing he couldn’t fix. He kept his cool and put the chart away.

“Amanda, I’ll need you to keep an eye on the vitals along with his pulse, pressure and blood levels. Cybil, you know what you have to do. Let’s save him, I know we can do this.”

Greg, as self-assured as ever, picked up his scalpel and gel before, out of habit and maybe tradition, was about to look at the patient’s face to mentally tell them to hang on, that it was going to be alright and that they’d soon be out of trouble when he remembered something. He’d fix it quicker than the bullet damaged the lung tissue, but before, he had to ask something to be done.

“Cybil, turn his head on his side, he may cough up blood as we proceed.”

He watched as she did so, silently. Before their eyes could connect again, however, Greg realized who he was dealing with, tools almost slipping out of fingers. The metal touching the floor was never heard, but the tension grew into white noise.

“Oh, God, not you of all people…” escaped from his lips.

Amanda seemed confused, but her inquiries for a reply weren’t met by either specialist in the OR.

He’d have the check the name on the charts before operating, next time. He was ready to deal with a bullet removal, but the patient turned out to be a rotten surprise. Yet, remembered what he had told Derek when he had himself been infected with Tetarti, he breathed in, breathed out and mentally slapped himself. Never let your friendship slow down your surgical skills. Never let your personal feelings hinder your performances. Never let yourself get emotional when you’re needed in the OR.

Dr Kasal would save this young man; he swore to himself as he disinfected the body for a thoracotomy. He’d never lose a patient, ever. Not like this, not in these circumstances.

The ER’s waiting room was empty at this hour of the night, making Angie desperate for a distraction as she waited for something, anything to be announced, to happen. She had never been very patient when she was unable to help, to be active and proactive and change the world one gesture at a time. Reduced to the role of the concerned relative, friend or loved one, she didn’t feel right to be there when she had the knowledge and skills to do something about it.

Instead, all she had to look at was her phone whose battery was dwindling down faster than the time went by and her hands, her bloodied hands she hadn’t taken the time to wash before coming here and sitting in this room. She could only hope the good Dr Kasal was the one operating, the safest hands she could think of in this hospital, perhaps in this city to deal with this when Caduceus would have been too far away.

She needed to be moving if she didn’t want to go insane, so she got up and decided to head for the restrooms. She’d be able to wash her hands covered in dried dark red, turning to brown the more time passed, a reminder that her clothes were bloodstained and that she’d never feel clean again after going through this, after watching this unfold before her eyes. She’d physically be cleansed, but it’d be a whole other story mentally.

As she rubbed the red away from her hands with force and what she had left of her vigour, Angie looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair was dishevelled, her eyes reddened by all the crying, her body was still trembling, she looked like a maniac who had just killed a man and was getting away with it despite her intentions.

Thing was, she had killed a man.

They were walking in an alley to retrieve a parcel Angie had missed by having to go to work earlier than usual to make up for Sienna having the flu when she heard a somewhat familiar sound: that of a firearm getting readied to shoot. Instantly, she turned around while Derek, not having the sharper attention she had to tiny noises, didn’t for a few moments, only to be faced by a man and his gun pointed directly at her.

“We were just trying to fix humankind,” he said in that monotonous voice of the people whose anger has confused them so much that they’re only empty shells of who they used to be, “why did you stop us?”

“Put that weapon away immediately!”

“Why should I? You’re guilty as charged, Dr Stiles, Nurse Thompson.”

As Angie walked through the familiar corridors of Hope Hospital again, bittersweet memories came back to her. She thought of her former colleagues, how much she’d have hoped to cross either Dr Kasal or Dr Myers and ask them how their relationship had been doing, how badly she wanted to hug someone and cry on their shoulder because she was scared, if not terrified, if not shaking with worry. She should’ve been reassured to be there, but clearly, she was the complete opposite.

The trigger was pulled before she could do anything about it, her speech interrupted before it could even get out of her mouth. She was tempted to close her eyes and let the bullet heading towards her take her life, “let me kill the lady first so she doesn’t have to witness your demise, Sinner Stiles,” but even her eyelids stood frozen as the shot was fired.

Little did she know Derek was rushing to her at an unnatural but known speed, shoving her out of the bullet’s way, only discovering the deed had been done when she was on the ground, palms and knees hurting from the brutal fall, and red flashing before her eyes and onto her clothes.

In the end, Angie came back to the waiting room, pacing because sitting truly made her inactive, passive, useless. She wasn’t a waste, she wasn’t going to let herself waste away when perhaps, just perhaps, Derek needed her sooner or later. The tears were about to fall again as the events once again repeated in her mind, tearing apart her defences, showing herself she was far more vulnerable and weaker than she wanted herself to be, than she displayed herself to be to others.

She couldn’t be able to describe what she felt like when she jumped on the guy, disarmed him with a slap on the wrist and threw him to the ground. There was anger, of course, deep-rooted anger which had blazed through the different stages of intensity to become an unstoppable, unsatisfied want to see him disappear in suffering before her eyes, a desire to see him burn in Hell until the end of eternity, the wish to give justice to her dearest friend. Yet, there was something else, lingering somewhere, hindering at her need to destroy and pulverize until nothing was left of the murder attempt: sadness, concern, guilt.

Was she at fault for Derek getting shot in her stead? Yes. No. Maybe. Yes, but no, but yes, but no… The cycle of guilt looped endlessly because she didn’t understand his decision. She was too heartbroken to rationally think about said decision.

She pulled out her phone, its battery in its last quarter. She had no charger on her, nothing to distract herself anymore, as if she could physically bring herself not to think of the situation. She was the reason why events had taken such a drastic, tragic turn: if she had been in control, if she had reacted properly and quickly enough, if she had been the heroine she had always wanted to be and become, she’d have stopped the dude before it was too late, before anyone got injured, before anyone risked losing their lives to stupid hatred and misplaced ideologies.

Angie, despite her distressed state, cradled him in her arms, the other man unconscious and laying there with no clear sign of being alive or dead. Everything about Derek screamed vulnerability: his pulse was weak, his breathing was feeble, his eyes couldn’t properly focus on her. She could tell he was trying to reassure her, but every time he spoke, he coughed up blood, and every time he tried holding her hand to show her he was going to be fine, he squeezed his eyes in pain.

Her reflexes weren’t lost in the panic of the situation, much to her relief. Pressing a hand against the wound to apply pressure to what must have been both an internal and external haemorrhage, she made sure to see if he was still conscious, if he could still reply properly and react to his environment. Time was slow, its course confusing, and she cursed herself for not having first-aid material on her when she had barebone training in it.

Eventually, exhausted by her tears and her fears, Angie sat down on a chair, never to move from it again. Even if she had cried over and over again in the last hour or so, she still wanted to weep like a child, to call a friend and vent to them about how scared she was of the future, of his future, of how much she messed up on that one. What an idiot she was! And yet, and yet…And yet, Derek had done his best to reassure her, as if she wasn’t the reason why he had gotten shot…

She was a mess, lost in the tempest of emotions, unable to muster up enough courage to look strong and cool-headed. Instead, she was… absolutely useless to Derek, whose use of the Healing Touch had weakened to begin with. She should have been comforting him, but instead…

“H-hey, Angie… Don’t cry…”

He was the one trying to make her feel better, despite her mistakes, despite his condition going downhill faster than it had unfolded.

“B-but… You got shot, Derek! I… I’m so sorry!!”

He put a weak, febrile hand on her shoulder, drenched in his blood and printing onto her dress.

“I’ll be fine, I… I’m sure of it… Please, don’t cry…”

His voice was hoarse, struggling to speak out as he coughed up a bit more blood mixed with what she could assume was saliva. Sitting against a wall, face to face with her, she felt like she needed to protect him, but had already failed to do so…

“I… Ha!”

She yelped when she saw his already faint grasp on her shoulder weaken even more and his eyes, already half-shut in pain and exhaustion, close further. She was losing him. As long as he was awake, he was alive, but if he passed out, he could pass away and she’d be too sorrowful to notice it and apply the few reanimation techniques she knew. She couldn’t lose him, not even let him faint on her.

“Derek, please, stay with me!” Her voice hiccupped with yet another wave of sobs. “Help is coming, please, just… Stay awake!”

Too late: he probably wasn’t hearing her anymore. His eyes closed soon afterwards, leaving her alone with the silence, her tears and a breathing so weak it could vanish for a yes or a no.

“I… I’m sorry…”

…all she could do was wait and hope that Derek would have the strength and will to pull through it; so she slumped her shoulders and closed her eyes. There was no use in getting panicked…

“…Angela Thompson?”

An unfamiliar voice got her out of her thoughts, causing her to jump on her chair. Facing her was a young woman around her age, whom she didn’t recall ever seeing before, presumably her substitute.

“Yes?”

Then she realized what it meant. The lack of an expression she could decipher on the nurse, presumably stuck in anxieties, scared her beyond what she could even express with words and medical terminology.

“How’s Derek?!”

…

Everything felt… numb. Drowned sounds, muffled visuals, numbed sense of touch. Where was he? The ceiling, white, was no indication. It was blurry, everything was a blur actually, and his mind was completely blanking out. What had happened? What did he do last? Did it explain why he was there, where he was, how he had gotten there?

Did he ever wake up this confused, or was it one of these cases where he had passed out and didn’t realize it?

His whole body was made out of the heaviest metal, limbs unresponsive and heavy, eyes half-opened and whose lids were made out of titanium. He didn’t have his glasses on, he was sure of it: otherwise, his vision would have focused much earlier than that and left him waiting for far less time. Instead, heh… Where were his glasses, actually? Were they gone, were they near, did he still have a sense of space or dimension?

He looked around, as his neck was the first place of his body to remember how to function properly. More blur, obviously, but he could vaguely distinguish a few things, including the presence of someone to his right and a red square… thing to his left. Safe to assume he was in a bed and that someone was sitting in a chair next to said bed, so he was in a hospital.

Wait, hospital?!

It came back to him in a flash. The former Delphi member, the gun, using his gift to push Angie out of the way, the pain, the blood, and her tears. Everything came back, albeit these memories were still rendered imprecise and vague by the fact he had passed out and had just woken up. Goddammit… He had survived that, though, he was sure he was a goner and that he’d never get the occasion to tell Angie goodbye.

Not that he had wanted to do that on purpose. It was just a need he felt, to say her farewell before joining back his father. Alas, fortunately, Dad would have to wait: he had survived one more day, one more day and so much more lives he could save with these hands of his… soon enough.

A very welcome voice came to his ears

“Searching for these, Derek?”

His glasses magically appeared on his face, gently, without forcing themselves. Only a couple of people could have the delicateness needed to do so… and even then, it was a bit surprising.

“Angie…?”

His voice sounded as well as he looked and felt like, which meant terrible and cottony. Not exactly how he wanted to show up after getting close to death yet again.

“That’s me, Dr Stiles. How you’re feeling?”

“Huh… Had better days for sure…”

Now that his vision was clear, he took the time to look at her, to indulge in looking at her again to be exact. She was smiling, as beautiful as ever, even if he could somewhat tell she had been crying (well, he knew that, so it made this observation easier to make). He wished he hadn’t made her get so concerned, from him he’d assume, but alas… It was too late to go back on that. What had been done, was done. No need to dwell on the past, despite the regrets…

“You scared us so much, you can’t even imagine!” She began by scolding him and, if his chest didn’t feel so sore, maybe he’d have laughed it off as usual. He was used to it, it was almost a daily thing for them. Friendly banter, in a way.

“Ha… Sorry for that, I… I jumped in there…”

Angie looked on the side, cheeks reddened. She muffled a hiccup.

“Why… Why did you do that, Derek? I, I mean, I’m grateful, but… That was stupid and you know it!”

He couldn’t exactly blame her for being upset about what had happened in the alley. He hadn’t explained himself very clearly when he was too busy keeping his airways free.

“I… saw that it was heading for your heart… You wouldn’t have survived that, so… I thought… It’d be better if I took it because I wasn’t going to immediately die from it…”

He attempted to smile to her, to reassure her again (too late, Derek, you dumbass).

“So, in all… I say it was worth it. I wouldn’t have stood losing you to that guy…”

She looked speechless, for once. All she did in response to his words, his poorly-chosen but true words, was to squeeze his hand.

“Me… Me neither, so… Never do that again okay?”

“Not a chance…”

He allowed himself a light laugh.

“As a surgeon, I outta now… What are my injuries, Ms Thompson…?”

Angie looked utterly baffled at this, if not offended, but she still cleared her throat and, in the end, let a smirk show on her face.

“A bullet to the left lung, internal and external bleeding, a damaged rib. Don’t worry, it didn’t break, your lung isn’t punctured. And it better has stayed that way!”

“Agreed there… Would have been a pain… Literally so.”

“Do I need to consider you making terrible medical puns a good step towards your recovery, Derek?”

“Yes.”

The silence settling in the room was light, almost soothing. Not that he didn’t want to tell her about all the things he had thought when he was sure he was going to meet his demise in a dark, dirty corner of Angeles Bay, quite the opposite in fact; he just was too tired to tell them.

They were both alive, that was what mattered, all that mattered. He’d have to thank his surgeon as soon as he’d see them, but that could wait. His professionalism could wait, he was sure Caduceus wouldn’t blame him for taking a day off, especially when his assistant nurse was so adamant in keeping him safe and watching over him. It’d be… all fine.

also i play so many playthroughs that most of my wardens/hawkes/inquisitors don’t have great well thought out lives because i literally forgot everything i ever made up for any of them lmao

2. how did you discover dragon age?

so i got my first console of my own when i was like 17, it was an xbox 360 and for a while i was living off my bros hand-me-downs and he gave me origins and i had seen commercials and wanted to play it and he didn’t really like it so he gave it to me. at this point the game was maybe a year old. i literally could not even make it to the tower of ishal, i tried so hard man but inevitably i rage quit. about a year later or so, like before da2 was really announced (cuz i remember already being a fan and following news on da2 sooo) i tried to replay it and i demolished the game in like four days playing every single second out of it and here we are

3. how many times you’ve played the games?

so....many....i have AT LEAST 15 completed games for each game but i know theres like. way more. i think i finished dao over 20 times so like. yo.

it was rogue at first but i seem to be making a lot more mages now

After you're finished in Whiterun, you'll want to head to Ivarstead, as it is located at the foot of the 7,000 Steps leading up to High Hrothgar. Once you get there and get close to the bridge, you'll hear a conversation. Talk to one of the men, Klimmek, and learn about what dangers are lurking ahead. You can take an optional quest from him to deliver supplies to the Greybeards. You may also ask people there to tell you some information about High Hrothgar:

The 7,000 Steps(edit)

When you start on the trail up, you'll run across various leveled wildlife and monsters, and a couple of pilgrims, Barknar and Karita. You will also find various etched stone tablets ('emblems') giving you information on the history of the dragons and the Way of the Voice.

Shortly after the fourth emblem where you meet Karita, at a point where the steps are sandwiched between two cliffs, there is a frost troll that will jump from the top of one cliff if it sees you (though sometimes it may be found further up the path). For low-level characters, this can be a difficult fight. It can be avoided altogether by sneaking past it at night or scaling the cliffs nearby.

Combat strategies(edit)

Frost trolls, like any other type of troll, have a weakness to fire. Thus, handy combat strategies include using weapons which have a fire enchantment, using fire-based destruction spells, and summoning a flame atronach. The Shout Fire Breath could also be used, as a word for it can be gained early on in the Companions questline.

Trolls can deal a substantial amount of damage, but most of it can be avoided by tactically falling back when one sees the troll raising his arms or preparing a power attack. If you need to heal, you can sprint away; the troll will not generally outrun you. Similarly, using a shield to block the Troll's attacks can also be effective, but does depend highly on timing.

It is possible to scale the rocks just before the troll, allowing you to use ranged attacks to safely eliminate it. However, the troll may regenerate its health faster than you can damage it. Using a bow with a fire enchantment or ranged destruction spells such as Firebolt would give an advantage.

If you are careful, it can be killed by long distance arrows from the entrance to the ravine it lives in. Go into stealth mode, stand at the entrance to the ravine, all to the right, and shoot at the troll when you can just see it on top of the cliff. If done properly, the troll may shift left or right a little, but will not come after you; the x2 sneak attack bonus (x3 with the perk) should allow you to kill it quickly. However, if it falls off the cliff, this will not work anymore.

If you retreat down the stairs, Karita, who is meditating at the tablet, will help defeat the troll.

Avoiding the fight(edit)

It is easily possible to simply run past the Troll, as it moves rather slowly.

If you activate and read all ten plaques along the 7,000 Steps, you'll receive the blessing Voice of the Sky that causes wildlife to neither flee nor attack you for 24 hours.

The shout the Greybeards use to create the attack targets for learning Ro is Fiik Lo Sah, Mirror Deceive Phantom. It is not attainable by the player except through console codes.

When you are asked to run through the gate before it closes using your new Whirlwind Sprint shout, you can make it through the gate in time using a regular sprint.

Upon completion of this quest, you will gain access to the main quest of the Dragonborn expansion.

Arngeir's dialogue about Whirlwind Sprint is slightly different if you already know a word of the shout. If you have learned part of the shout through word walls, you will receive the second or third part of the shout instead.

Bugs(edit)

If you enter High Hrothgar from the back door (where you perform the shout 'whirlwind sprint'), the Greybeards may not congregate in the hall and the quest will not progress (stuck on 'speak to Arngeir'). Exit from the front door and re-enter before speaking to Master Arngeir to progress.

This bug is fixed by version 1.2.4 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.

The Greybeards may attack you after you use an Unrelenting Force on them.

If you leave High Hrothgar after being presented the word Ro, but before learning (absorbing) the word on the floor, you may not be able to learn the word when you return. This can also happen in very rare cases even if you do not leave (more likely to happen later in the game if you have put off doing the main quest). This can break the main quest. There is no workaround for this other than reloading a previous save from before the word is presented to you.

If you interrupt Einarth while he's casting Ro on the floor by talking to him or shouting at him, it may not appear. ?

When asked to demonstrate the Voice, the spectres may not appear.

Cheating to Win (?): Gameplay Experience in the Hands of a Player

We discussed the materials for the topic of cheats, mods, hacks, and bugs amongst ourselves in class. Everyone pitched in on what they think the definition or purpose of each aspect is which gave the topic a lot of perspectives. Essentially, any of these aspects can be embedded into a game and it would influence gameplay, whether intentional or otherwise. Apart from the developers’ vision, the constraint of rules and mechanics, and predefined play space, how do players shape their own experiences?

As shameful as my brother made it out to be back when we competed to see who could play the same games better (he always won in case that needs clarification), I played a lot of DS games with a bloat load of cheats. Harvest Moon DS, Sims Pet 2, all the way to Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission: Wifix, and, of course, the fourth generation of Pokémon. Unlike the other games I “cheated” on, Pokémon was by far the one I did for the most bizarre reason: to play Pokémon without actually playing Pokémon.

Throughout the years of never actually finishing any one Pokémon game, I’ve come to accept that I will probably never play Pokémon as the game it was intended to be. I’m quite horrible at type matchups, I keep trying to avoid battles, and the amount of times I died in the hands of the third city’s gym leader is, quite frankly, disgraceful. However, that is not to say that I didn’t enjoy those aspects of the game nor was incapable of eventually not dying so much. I simply keep finding a different reason to play the game throughout each iteration of Pokémon. Playing Pokémon Emerald was my way to grind for Pokémon Contests, trying to win the most amount of hearts for decorating a Pokémon well. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, I never went past diligently blending Aprijuice for Pokéathlon. By Pokémon Diamond, my heart was sold for the Underground, where players dig around for ‘spheres’ and maintain secret bases. Did I ever come even close to beating my brother in PvP? Heck no. But the alternate mechanics that did not involve nurturing a party, battling, or tough competition kept me, through generations, playing a game that boasted those core mechanics.

It’s easy to argue that those mechanics are implemented to be played, and each event space does have their own reputation separate from the game’s overall review. I really can’t say I’m a unique-minded player despite the horrified look my brother gives me when I have to remind him that yes, I’ve never won a single Pokémon battle against another human being, and no, I don’t care, I just want to play Pokémon without actually leveling up, fighting the Elite Four, or finishing the game at all.

And so I cheated.

At the start, I went through each folder of cheats to see which ones I’d really need, like a bunch of money to buy potions or customization options that didn’t really affect the core gameplay too much. At that point, I was still trying to make my way around every single city and trainer before I arrived at the point of no return because again, those mechanics did provide challenges and bursts of satisfaction that I can take pride in. However, the more those mechanics repeated and the more I had to shave off time to invest in battles over events, I added cheats that let me speed through everything that I no longer cared for. Walking through walls to pass over cities, 1HKO attacks, infinite items a button press away, and so on. Compared to my brother’s slow but sure progress accumulated through properly playing the game, I was (arguably) playing well. My achievements were unearned, but it still felt good to bash through a trainer I had to skitter around otherwise.

Fast forward generations of games later though, I still have absolutely no skill in Pokémon battles. Is it a wonder? I left the machine to do my battles for me and when I actually had to take them into consideration, I had 1) immeasurably damaging preconceived notions and 2) little to no knowledge of the actual depth of the mechanics. I learned through some of these when I joined an online Pokémon battling platform, but alas, a 13-year-old mopped the floor with my Bulbasaur and I was still none the wiser. Move sets, items, levels, abilities, natures, IVs, EVs, mega evolutions, Pachirisu, Kangaskhan, special moves—I could list a billion things I know but have no understanding of, after years of playing iterations of the same game, because I cheated my way through pretty much everything the game had to offer. Cheats had enabled me to play a game I’m dreadful at, but did not actually develop the ability I needed to play the game as it probably should be.

Funnily enough, I had enough mind to never use event cheats and properly go through the grind to be successful at the games’ respectful event mechanics. I saved up every point in Pokéathlon and the Underground to legitimately trade with shop goods, no matter how long it took to obtain thirty thousand to exchange with one measly item. And of course, I never cheated nor skipped the repetitive mini-games I had to go through every round of play. To me, that was the challenge I had to overcome. I suppose my desire to persevere over small increments far exceeded my motivation to complete a complex arc of play.

At some point, I had piled up so many cheats upon themselves that my game (Pokémon Diamond specifically) bugged out. At first, I had trouble opening menus, so I had to be careful when I took out items or trying to save. Eventually, I couldn’t open them at all, and having to traverse through a cave at the time, I encountered a wild Pokémon every three steps. As frustrating as that was, I kept going because there seemed to be a treasure hidden underground at where I was heading towards. And then the party started. The first Pokémon in my roster was a Graveler with Explosion—a self-destructive move—and for some reason, every battle I encountered suddenly became a tutorial stage. The pointer hand automatically self-destructed my Pokémon in every battle without recognizing any of my input. It also magically revives the Pokémon after the battle. And so, with a three-step Pokémon encounter eminent through a long cave, a broken menu, a broken battle system, a broken Graveler, and a broken heart, I had to lay down all my progress for essentially breaking the game with my own hands.

Without personally having ever made any meaningful progress in the game.

It all honestly seems pretty ironic to recount now. I cheated to play what I couldn’t (or wouldn’t) play to the point that I couldn’t actually play the game anymore. Perhaps things would’ve been different if I had tried to play Pokémon by its core mechanics, progress through the battles and challenges, and find other ways to incorporate my interest in side-events with the main narrative. However, I had played to have fun, to take upon challenges I find rewarding, and Pokémon happens to be a game that has a spectrum players can enjoy. If we define a win as achieving what one sought out for, there is an infinite number of ways a player can play and win a game. And, to that extent, I believe cheating to win (?) is definitely a valid way to experience a game.

Except if you cheat so much you bug out the whole game. At that point, perhaps it may be best to tone it down a little.

Every time someone asks me a random fact I immediately forget all facts about my life.

No, I’m kidding. Or well, I’m not, but that’s not really a great random fact. So instead I’m going to go with my latest achievement. Yesterday evening I finally beat Tyranny after ~31 hours of play (according to Steam), which is a god damn accomplishment because I NEVER finish games. Like I’m the sort of person who plays a game for a while then gets distracted by another one and never comes back to finish the first. Of course, it also doesn’t help that I’m really bad at a lot of genres, so it’s just difficult for me to beat games in general. RPGs (whether CRPGs or more mainstream ones), like Tyranny, are probably just about the only games I ever beat, since they require just time rather than skill (especially since I usually play at relatively low difficulties so I can feel OP).

In fact, I’d guess that I’ve beaten less than 10% of the games I’ve played, and 5% of the games in my Steam library. Since I’m now curious, I’m going to go through and list the ones I’ve played, and bold the ones I’ve beaten, so that I can come up with an ACTUAL percentage.

For the record, all RTSes or multiplayer titles will be left out unless they have a single player campaign, in which case, that’s what I’m referring to by whether or not I’ve beaten the game. (example: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is well-known for being a great tactics game, but it also has a complex campaign line made up of multiple branches that come together for a story. Since I’ve not beaten it (though I’ve been periodically replaying it over the years), I can’t consider the game ‘beaten’ even though I’ve won quite a few normal games against the AI on easy difficulty.

Indian Motorcycle FTR750 Hillclimber Hillclimb is one of the simplest and oldest race formats around, and even though it seems kind of silly, it’s massively entertaining. The AMA Pro Hillclimb Racing series has just added a twins class, so Indian Motorcycle have thrown their hat into the ring by adapting their hugely successful FTR750.

The FTR750 has been dominating flat track racing in the US since it released, and Indian are hoping to repeat that success in hillclimb. (After all, the brand does have a successful history in the sport.) So they’ve signed up 10-time AMA Pro Hillclimb champ, John Koester, to pilot their new hillclimb race bike.

John worked with his father and crew chief, Gordy, to transform the flat tracker into a hillclimber. The most obvious mods are the radically extended swing arm, and the MX-style fender, seat and tail section. But the bike’s also running different wheel sizes from stock, and a Rekluse clutch to handle the heavy load hillclimb racing is sure to inflict on it.

S&S Cycle came to the party too, outfitting the bike with one of its most custom touches; they built a two-into-one exhaust system for John, routing it with his exact riding position in mind. Up top, it wears traditional flat-tracker style bodywork, finished in a classic Kawasaki paint scheme by Jackpot Custom Paint. A set of number boards complete the vibe, with a halogen headlight poking out of the front one.

Lower down, the Kawasaki’s 19F/18R wheels are wrapped in Dunlop dirt track tires. Crazy Garage swapped out the suspension too; there’s a set of adjustable Showa forks up front, held by Ducati triples, and a pair of Öhlins rear shocks. And the front brake’s been updated to a Brembo unit, with a 320 mm disc.

On the performance side, Crazy Garage swapped the air box for a pair of velocity stacks, and built a low-slung, right-side-only two-into-two exhaust system. Unlike the older W650, the W800 is fuel injected—so the crew installed a Power Commander unit to tune it. Honda CB650 by Thrive Motorcycle Based in Jakarta, Thrive never fails to impress with their workmanship, and their creative takes on well-worn build styles. Here, they’ve taken a UJM (the Honda CB650), and turned into a classy superbike-slash-endurance racer. And they’ve done it with mostly hand-made parts.

That fairing looks like a vintage repop, but it’s actually a one-off part, shaped from fiberglass. What’s even more impressive, is that it’s the first time the Thrive team have attempted fiberglass work.

Conversely, the tank and tail were shaped from metal, with the latter left raw to drive the point home. The tank also wears an endurance style filler cap, and a fuel level sight window.

Tucked behind the fairing is a single Honda dial, and a set of clip-ons with aftermarket controls. Lighting is by way of twin headlights up front, and a pair of round, stacked taillights at the rear. Other custom bits include a tidy front alloy fender, and a steel electronics box tucked under the saddle.

The motor was completely rebuilt by Kandang Ayam Garage, and now runs with Thrive velocity stacks, and a four-into-two exhaust system. The CB rides on Yamaha upside-down forks, with a modified top yoke, and a pair of Öhlins rear shocks. The original Honda Comstar wheels have been ditched for a pair of laced 17” units, and are equipped with a modified set of retro-futuristic looking CBX550F brakes.

Finished in monochromatic tones with a few graphics added to make it feel like an old track bike, this CB is an absolute showstopper. [More]

Kawasaki H2 Mach IV short film First released in 1971, the H2 Mach IV epitomizes the insanity of motorcycle development in the 70s and 80s. These days, the only two-strokes you can get your hands on are small-capacity, single-cylinder dirt bikes… but this was a 748 cc, air-cooled, three-cylinder screamer.

It made 74 hp at 6,800 rpm, 77.4 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, and was considered the fastest-accelerating production bike in the world. And even though it handled better than its predecessor, the 500 cc H1, it was still a ‘widow maker’ in its own right, requiring experienced riders to wring the maximum performance out of it.

DualShockers’ Favorite Games of 2019 — Iyane’s Top 10

2019 had a lot of cool mecha related games, but a lot of other great games from other genres too. Here are my top 10 from this year.

As 2019 comes to a close, DualShockers and our staff are reflecting on this year’s batch of games and what were their personal highlights within the last year. Unlike the official Game of the Year 2019 awards for DualShockers, there are little-to-no-rules on our individual Top 10 posts. For instance, any game — not just 2019 releases — can be considered.

I assume anyone who clicked on this wishes to read me talking about myself and my Unneeded Opinions (one of my favorite sentences of 2019), so I’ll do just that. 2019 was another year that went by in a flash. I’ve reached my first anniversary writing on DualShockers in September, and I’ve been pretty busy overall. As such, there are multiple games on this list I actually didn’t finish yet.

There are many games released in 2019 that I was really hyped about but didn’t have the time to try out yet either, and I’d like to start by listing some of them:

We first have games I’d consider mainstream, such as Devil May Cry 5, Judgment (I actually bought it in Japanese) Astral Chain. Then you’ve got more niche things, like Daemon X Machina (I’m waiting just in case a PC port gets announced), the Grandia remasters, SaGa Scarlet Grace, and Friends of Mineral Town Remake.

Lastly, we’ve got some visual novel games: Berubara Gakuen, Gnosia (Japanese outlets hyped up this game in a similar fashion that what happened with Disco Elysium in the US and Europe), Ciconia Phase 1 (the thing I was actually hyped for the most in 2019), Eve Rebirth Terror (idem), and the Yu-No remake.

I’m on a quest to play everything that Hiroyuki Kanno wrote after getting my mind blown by Eve Burst Error. Yu-No is one of these things, but the character design in the remake is bland as hell. Ryou Nagi is a great artist, and you can see that with Heavy Object or Ar Tonelico, but for some reason, everything remake-related he touches turn into the blandest thing ever. The same thing happened for the newest Langrisser I&II remake; it’s like some huge conspiracy. As such, I’ll probably grab the Yu-No remake in Japanese, as that version includes a port of the original.

Anyway, that was just a small intro to show my tastes and what to expect in this ranking. Here are the games I’ve enjoyed the most in 2019, and note that it’s not only games released in 2019. Also, note that the top 5 are all pretty much my top 1.

10. Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Masterpiece 1995-2001

I suck at Virtual-On. But I love it, especially Oratorio Tangram, and being able to play it remastered on PS4 is nice. The only thing these ports of the three Virtual-On games sadly lack is local multiplayer split-screen. Virtual-On is the originator of Gundam Vs like games and all the anime 3D arena battlers of varying quality releasing each year, and it’s the best one there is.

Other games I considered for this position were Destiny Connect, Shenmue 3 (which I didn’t play myself and watched an online friend’s playthrough), and Zanki Zero (I was supposed to review that but ended up never finding the time to finish said review). I picked Virtual-On because it didn’t require me to write 2000 words to explain my mixed feelings about it.

9. Space Engineers

According to Steam, I’ve played 47 hours of Space Engineers with my online friends. I’m pretty sure at least 20 hours of that was us trying to figure out how the game works and being annoyed and how counter-intuitive many elements are. This includes reading wikis and only to realize it’s outdated info, looking for Uranium only to realize you can’t find any on planets, or trying to design vehicles, copying blueprints and recreating them block by block. And a lot of other dumb stuff.

Besides all these frustrations, Space Engineers is my favorite multiplayer game I’ve tried out this year and I’ve made some great memories with it, as an online friend streamed some of our adventures too. I’ve tried making the Senegalese flag with wind turbines (too long to explain): we managed a trip to a moon and putting the Algerian flag on it (a French joke too long to explain) and we did a MASK opening sequence parody with a vehicle parade.

8. Ocarina of Time Randomizer Version 5.0

I actually put this on my list last year as well, but seeing that the game’s meta has changed since then, this is fine. Again, I don’t have the time to play this myself and enjoy watching races instead, This year, ZeldaSpeedRuns held the OoT Randomizer Season 2 tournament, which ended in June with the victory of Marco against WTHH.

Now, the Season 3 tournament bracket matches just started in early December, with the version 5.0 0f the mod, changing the meta. We’ve already got a surprising upset, with first tournament winner and 2nd qualifier ATZ losing against 31 qualifier Killerapp23. Getting into detail would take too long and be incomprehensible if you’re not already into OoT rando, so I’m just gonna say this is the most interesting esports thing to watch ever. And like I said last year, it’s incredibly fun.

7. Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom

Wing Commander IV is one of the many games I’ve played in my childhood which left me with a huge impression. Along with things like Shenmue 1 & 2, this is one of the games I used to regularly quote until my high school years or so. I’ve finally got the time to rediscover the game this year. I didn’t end up replaying it myself though and watched a full playthrough of it. It was really interesting; I remembered many iconic scenes from the game and some characters, but I had no idea what the overall story was about anymore.

It’s surprising how anime space opera the story is, and I wouldn’t be surprised if something Japanese inspired the story. It all comes to Japan. This also made me realize, in a sense, that Wing Commander IV is pretty much one of the first visual novels I played and what made me enjoy well-written stories and choices. This is also what made me both love and hate draconian choices, multiple routes and characters’ deaths. I hate not being able to save characters.

6. Romancing SaGa 3 Remaster

Back in my childhood I tried playing Romancing SaGa 3, as it was among the various SNES roms I had at disposal. I quickly realized that it’s completely different than most RPGs and unlike many games in Japanese such as Super Robot Wars 4: I couldn’t trial and error my way through.

Around 18 years later, Romancing SaGa 2 Remaster comes out in 2017; it’s awesome, and a masterpiece. And then in 2019, Romancing SaGa 3 Remaster is finally out and it’s even more awesome. I’m currently in the final area of the game after playing as Sarah, because she has a fluffy afro ponytail. I just wish the game had a turbo button.

Tie-in 6. Persona 5 Royal

This is a tie-in as that’s an enhanced version of a really recent game, which was my 2016 favorite. I purposely played through Persona 5 only once, only maxing the coops and not doing much of the other side content, in case such an enhanced version ever released.

Even then, and even considering how much of a masterpiece that Persona 5 is, clearing such a long game again is annoying. Most of the new scenes I’ve seen so far, most notably Kasumi’s and Takuto’s scenes, are all incredibly nice though. The renewed dungeons and bosses’ designs are fun, and Joker is even more Lupin The Third-like with the wire hook, but there’s nothing groundbreaking either. I’m far from reaching the new part at the original’s ending, as I’m just about to reach the Hawaii part. Hopefully, it’ll be a nice ride.

The five games below are all my actual number one.

5. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

I’ve been waiting for 13 Sentinels since when it got announced in 2015. I could even say since 2013, as I hoped a game related to the Vanillaware Happy New Year 2013 Geroge Kamitani artwork above would come out someday. I had incredibly high expectations for it and none of it were betrayed as of now.

It’s awesome. It’s fully-voiced. It’s got giant robots. It’s the most beautiful (2D) game since forever. It’s like if an old Japanese adventure game got made with current technology. It’s a shame the game bombed in Japan. If you’re interested, I’ve written more about the game, and I’m recording myself translating the game as I’m playing through it.

4. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is amazing on all points. I’ve rarely had so much fun walking around and exploring a city in a game. I think what makes the game the most amazing is how it’s pretty much the culmination of the Ys series since it switched to the party system, and as if one of the first versions of the first Ys games were transposed to 3D. The verticality of the environments is used so well you can still feel lost despite having a map. Falcom might pretty much be one of the smallest, penniless studios in Japan despite its longevity; they still make the best action RPGs ever. What I’ve seen of the story so far is particularly amazing too, and Toshihiro Kondo is a good writer along with being a good company president.

I’m currently taking a break from the game after reaching what I guess is around 1/3 of it. I was so hyped I had to play it at launch, but I want to do all the other Ys games I didn’t do yet first, even if it’s absolutely not necessary to understand the story. I like being able to understand every single reference in a series like this. I’m the kind of person who wishes to know exactly how many times Kazuya and Heihachi threw each other out of a volcano/mountain.

3. Super Robot Wars T

I didn’t play Super Robot Wars V nor SRW X as they initially didn’t release on Switch. If we don’t count SRW OG Moon Dwellers, which was on my top ten 2018 list, SRW T is my first SRW game since the SRW Z3 finale on PS3 in April 2015. It’s pretty great, be it the story, its cast list, or the animations. Everything about it is nice. Having things like Cowboy Bebop, Gunbuster, Rayearth, Gun x Sword, and Captain Harlock together feels incredible. It’s extremely sad that Captain Harlock’s seiyuu Makio Inoue passed away right after he finally got in SRW.

A new OG anime directed by Obari and a new OG game would be nice. I’m happy the series seemingly won’t get a new game in 2020, so the development teams can take their time.

2. Fire Emblem Fuukasetsugetsu / Three Houses

This game has my favorite cast of characters in a Fire Emblem game, along with Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu/Genealogy of the Holy War, and I could write a 1000 word article on every single character on this picture (if I was paid adequately for it). This is only one of the many reasons why I like this game. In a nutshell, I’d say I love the fact that I find it very innovative and yet similar to the other Fire Emblem games I’ve played and liked so far, and how it’s true for every aspect of the game.

1. Project Sakura Wars/ Shin Sakura Taisen

This opening sequence has over 1.7 million views, and half of these are all me. While I’m not done with Shin Sakura Taisen yet, I fail to imagine how the game could even disappoint me so far, seeing how amazing it is. Before the game launched, I wasn’t concerned about the battle system change, but whether the new cast would be interesting or not. If there was a world Guinness record for most baseless worry of 2019, this would get it. This game got everything that makes Sakura Taisen so awesome. The strong female characters, the cool mecha, the great worldbuilding, the comedy. It’s a great new start in the series and I hope we’ll get more. I shared a few impressions on the game and just like 13 Sentinels, I’m recording myself playing the game, translating at the same time.

That’s it for my top ten.

If you’re wondering about my expectations for 2020, the game I’m looking forward to the most so far is the Seiken Densetsu 3 remake: Trials of Mana. Then we also have things like FF7R, Rune Factory 5, Space Channel 5 VR, Brigandine…I’m also eager to see KOF XV even if I won’t play it. Lastly, 2020 will also mark the tenth anniversary of the Pretty Series franchise. The Pretty Rhythm anime seasons and its King of Prism sequels were my favorite anime of the decade, so I’m looking forward to what Avex and Takara Tomy have in store for the anniversary, and if we might get some games other than arcade games out of it.

I’m planning to stay on DualShockers and keep writing about Japanese games in the new year. I don’t have the time nor the paycheck to cover every single news as fast as possible, but I always try to bring to the table as much info as I can, along with relevant translations and observations. Hoping you’ll keep reading us in 2020.
